Since I gotta pay out of pocket for massage now, I thought I'd try Chinatown and see how it stands up against the rmt I've had over the years. I'm no expert but this was possibly shiatsu, although they told me this was Chinese massage, and it was different from the usual rmt in that they press on points as well as the usual moves. I was super happy with the service and value. Also the amount of effort she put into the job. I asked for 45 minutes which is $50 cash and seems a fairly standard price in Chinatown. The pace was much faster than I'm used to and it seemed that I almost got the usual 90 minutes worth in 45. Of course it's not the same, but quite impressive amount of work over the 45 minutes with no downtime or inefficiency. The room was small, clean and quiet, although I went in the evening when it wasn't busy. There was soft Chinese folk guitar twanging playing quietly in the room and the lighting was nice. The white disposable sheet on the table was great. I met two ladies when I went in, and it seemed like they were the only ones there. One was better at English. The one that massaged spoke only Chinese with rudimentary "ok" in English which was fine and I appreciated not wanting to talk. She ended up using the hot towels on my back which felt heavenly. I tipped $20 since that was all I had on my, but felt worth it compared to the usual $156 bill at the clinic with no tip. I'll be back and felt fantastic on the walk home and the next day. read more

Would only recommend if u need a quick pick me up to rub your feet. Let's start out with the positive. Good pressure on the legs...felt hella good. Legs are feeling refreshed ! After the soak and 10 Minutes in, came the constant interruptions of my masseuse, tending to other appointments coming in, making phone calls on her cell phone between touching me , talking to other patrons coming in. Did not hear or see the other masseuses cleaning their hands in a span of 5 seconds. Phone by my feet? Way to decompress hah. In the middle of my massage she asked if a male masseuse could replace me so she can tend to what it seem to b another appointment . I declined and then she proceeded to continue and then talk to a second appointment while being on her phone touching her cell phone and my feet. She then told the other man to undress and told him she would be there in 30 Minutes communicating from The other room. I got then moved To another room to complete my second half of the package and she left me there for another good long moment. She came back rushing,violently rubbing me quickly . Absolutely not peaceful at all. Then i said can you go Slower and she went softer. Then she got on the phone again speaking her language out loud massaging me With one hand . I asked her if she could take the call later she continued her call And ignored me and then she hung up and i asked her to stop. My wife and I had gotten many massages before, especially when we travel. Their prices raised and is now 40 dollars for one hour of foot massage, which isn't all that unreasonable. However, they start off by soaking your feet for a good 15 minutes, which means you basically get only 45 minutes of foot massage. Soaking the feet is reasonable, but it's usually 5 minutes or less. Putting that aside, the massage was very lackluster, as my masseuse spent so much time just rubbing my toes instead of massages other areas that are tired. For example, she spent 2 minutes just rubbing each toe as if just scratching it slightly. I am not sure who would ever find that comfortable...it wasn't until I asked her to change to massage my feet that she reluctantly did so; if you do come here, please be mindful and make sure they don't waste your precious time. After brunch, we did a little shopping and were debating what to do afterwards when my cous had a brilliant idea. Foot massage/reflexology/whatever you want to call it. Hell yeah. We picked a spot in Chinatown and went with Zhen Zhen. It's $30.00 for an hour foot massage but that's a little misleading. If you break it down, it's about 10 minutes of getting your feet soaked in hot water then about 35 minutes of massage. So just keep that in mind when you go. Yes, I know that doesn't add up to an hour. Do the math. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to Zhen Zhen. The inside has a mix of rooms (for massage) and open style doors (for foot massages). We ended up getting one male (for me) and female practitioner (for my cous). Pressure was pretty good and he definitely got a few tender spots. I guess they expect you to tip them because they were grumbling in Chinese when we only dropped one bill instead of two? Either way, it's cash only. I haven't been to any other foot places in town so hard to compare but this one was decent enough. 3.5 stars. read more

Spur of the moment decision to look into getting foot massages during a recent trip to Chinatown and we were able to walk in at Zhen Zhen. The shop was clean and the staff welcoming. I only wanted a relaxing massage and not reflexology, but it was hard to get that request across. It started with a 15 minute foot soak in very hot water that felt fantastic! While our feet were soaking, we received a10 min shoulder massage. My daughter enjoyed hers, but mine was a little too deep tissue to truly be enjoyable. As we moved onto the foot massage, I clearly explained that due to old injuries, I needed the pressure to be fairly light. The gentleman acknowledged my request and I must say if that is what is considered gentle pressure I am afraid to imagine what heavier pressure feels like. I was able to manage, when he was doing my feet, but the pressure from his thumb on the bones in my legs was excruciating. If my facial expressions and squirming weren't clues enough, my repeated request to ease up went unheeded. I powered thru, but was more sore than when I walked in. Located right in the hustle and bustle of Chinatown, the signage was clearly displayed and easy to find. Plus based on Yelpers recommendation, this was the place to go for an inexpensive and good massage. Going up the stairs seemed a little sketchy because of the battered and scuffed up walls, but once inside Zhen Zhen it was an oasis of zen. Decent size sitting area where we were welcomed by a friendly female staff. The massage room we were in was a decent size and clean. That's the key importance of any massage place, it has to be clean. They provided us with green teas in styrofoam cups which I wished was served in paper cups. Price was very reasonable and comparable to other places in Chinatown. The foot massage priced at $30 consisted of 15 minutes herbal soak and 45 minutes reflexology session. The herbal soak literally consisted of a herbal tea bag in warm water placed in a plastic lined basin. Soak was quite timely and the masseur who was assigned to me greeted me warmly. My friend had a masseuse, but was switched to a masseur within 5 minutes. Guess he was running late or perhaps she had another appointment. Although a little painful at first since it has been awhile since I last had a foot massage, it turned out quite pleasant and I felt my foot relaxing with each touch and pressure the masseur entailed on my runner's foot. I definitely had a lot of knots and tight muscles that needed prodding. I engaged in small talk with the masseurs (asking them how long they've been doing foot reflexology), but that didn't last too long as I somewhat felt uncomfortable with my friend's masseur. Perhaps it was just me, but I didn't get a good vibe from him whereas my masseur was pleasant and friendly. I also had a feeling they were talking about us in Mandarin, but luckily for them I don't understand or I would have said something back. I tried not to let it bother me, so continued to chat with my friend and enjoyed the rest of the massage. Other than that, it was quite the enjoyable experience and we left with our feet feeling light and airy, plus free of all tightness and tension that we arrived with. After reading the reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I'm a runner and my work benefits only cover $500 of massage therapy per year, so I figured $30+tip for the 60 min reflexology session would be worth trying. I arrived just after 7pm and was the only client - they're open until 9pm during the week. I was immediately seated, given some tea, and a tub of hot (but very tolerable) water was brought for my feet to soak in. After about 10 mins or so, my therapist sat down - a very friendly guy in his 30s - and got to work on my feet. I sat back in the comfy chair and relaxed for the 45-minute session. He was very thorough and it was borderline painful at times - but needed - with the tightness in my feet and calves. My only minor complaint, which is why I'm deducting one star - was the non-stop talking between him and another woman who worked there. I know this isn't an RMT facility and I'm not paying spa prices by any stretch, so I'd only deduct a half a star if I could. In any case, it's a tidy place with friendly people. At the end of the session, I handed my therapist $40 cash and went on my way with happy feet. I'll definitely be back. read more

There are several places in the area that does chinese massage but this place is pretty good compared to others. $40 for 1hr foot and $68 for 1 hr foot plus 30min body is a steal because this place is pretty roomy, clean and is a legit massage place. Helen is great. Regardless of what the sign saids, ask for price beforehand. Things change and signs may not have always been updated as producing new signs cost money and really doesnt impact the quality. And honestly, $40 for 1 hr is a good deal compared for $80-$100 hr at some spa that may not be a great massage. If you are tipping $5 to someone who has given you a 90min massage because that's like 10% when you'd give a server 20% for just bringing you food is incomparable. You wouldn't give $5 as tip at a spa. Regardless of how "nice" a place is, the work they put in is what counts. One thing to try and understand is that each place has their technique or speciality. You wouldn't go to an Italian place asking them to make you chinese food so why would you go to a chinese massage place expecting a swedish massage. They will adjust to your preference but if it's not exactly the same, can you really blame them. Just relax and enjoy so you can take a load off. After all, that is the reason you are getting a massage in the first place. read more

We came across this place due to their sign on the street. While walking in Chinatown and having walked 10km the day before this massage deal sounded great. I originally was interested in the lymphatic massage but when I came in and asked about it they didn't seem to know what I was talking about. It was only 30 minutes though, and since my friend had a blister on her foot she didn't want the soak, but I did so that was cut short for me as well about 5 min was all I got. I got the full 30 min body massage but they had to call in a different girl for that since one of the girls "regulars" came in but that was OK and my body massage was really good. I think she actually got my back to crack. I'm only deducting one star for the fact I was in there a little over an hour and the deal should have been an hour and a half. They had tried to up sell by telling us about getting a longer body massage if our backs were hurting that would be better so I kinda thought when we went in for the body part they would make up the 15 min. But that didn't happen my lady was done right on 30 min. But over all it was a good deal. Perhaps if you come here just get the foot massage it is fabulous and you wont lose any time if they are only doing that for you. My experience at Zhen Zhen did not live up to those posted in past reviews on Yelp. I was greeted warmly by a lovely lady and told her I wanted a foot massage. She said it would be $30 for 60 minutes - 15 minute foot soak and 45 minute massage, which seems to be the going rate in the area. FYI - they do not accept credit or debit cards, it is cash only. I agreed, and she brought into one of their rooms. It was not particularly luxurious - old chairs, open doorways, and half walls between the rooms. They brought in a bucket of warm water which had a tea bag in it, then left me to soak my feet. I appreciated that she brought me the wifi password, although it could have been because I had asked if they had wifi prior to agreeing to the service. My foot soak lasted for approximately 7-8 minutes befor my masseuse came in. First he started to scrape at my feet wiht his fingernails - in bare hands! He dried my feet / legs and began to slather them with vaseline and got to work. Overall, I would say my experience was mediocre. It was only my second foot massage, but it was not as good as my first. I kept on asking the masseuse to use firmer pressure (go harder), but it did not seem to make any difference in what he was doing. The massage itself probably lasted around 35 minutes, so I was in and out in about 45 minutes. At the end, my feet and legs were a greasy mess, so I asked the lady if I could soak them again. For some reason she said that I couldn't, but offered me a warm wet towel instead. I took her up on this and she wiped down my legs for me. It was only when I was leaving that I was offered water or tea. This was a bit odd to me as I would have liked to enjoy those during the actual massage. Given that there are so many other similar places in Chinatown that offer the 60 minute foot massages for $30, I will try another option before returning to Zhen Zhen. read more

Other than constantly Chinese speaking in the background, massage was good. It was like I wanted; 45 min body (i told them to focus on my back and they did) + 15 min foot massage (i've traded this for a head massage). Total was $50 +tip. It really freshened me up as I was jet lagged and got cold because of weather change. But you need to talk to your masseuse, their massage is quite strong, actually it was the strongest I had. But it was to the point so when I left the building my back was renewed and my headache was gone. Might look a little shabby to you but I'm used to it as I lived in Malaysia and had Chinese massage in Langkawi, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. read more
