Everything was really good, except for the price. We went on a Saturday before the crowd and were both really hungry. We opted for two platters to try all the meats and some of the sides. The first platter had brisket (includes some burnt ends) and pulled pork while the other included chicken and sausage. For sides, we got mac n cheese, seasonal veg - green beans, baked beans and cole slaw. For two platters and a drink, it was close to $40, kind of a pricey lunch. The station to get your drinks, utensils, and sauces is nice because there is a hand washing station right there for those messy meats. For the meats, the sausage was my favorite, his favorite was the pork. To me, the chicken was overpowered by some spice, maybe cumin...just a guess. The brisket was also good, but had a bit of fat for the amount you got. All of the sides were good, including the beans which were a mixture of different beans with a sweeter sauce base. The green beans were sautéed with some garlic not quite to the mushy point that a lot of other bbq places serve. We also think the mac n cheese had some sort of gouda in it, very heavy and rich. The sauces were a little heavy on the ketchup, neither one of us a fan, but with a little cole slaw, nothing really needed sauce. If we are heading out that way we would likely stop again, but there are many other bbq places and food trucks to try around here to compare. Note: It's really hard getting out of the place if you don't head towards Braddock. A lot of traffic both ways in the afternoon and blind spots if dump trucks are parked on the side of the road. read more

I went to Hammerdown BBQ on 7/8/19 for dinner. I had passed Hammerdown BBQ. I was curious to try it. I was not disappointed by my sides and dessert. (I do not eat meat so I make a dinner of the sides.) My favorite side dish was the green beans. I went back for seconds of the banana pudding. If I had one compliant is that it was very hot in the restaurant. I understand that BBQ requires a lot of "heat". The dine-in experience would have been more pleasant if a window or door been open. In a nutshell, this is a hidden gem and a very authentic BBQ joint. read more

Stopped by here on a Sunday for lunch. Pulled pork sandwich was really good. Cole slaw is vinegar based. I prefer mine a little less tart. But still good. Nice choice of sauces. Husband got half rack of ribs. He said they were good with a lot of meat on them. Only bad thing was the Mac n cheese. So bland. Not your usual creamy cheesy Mac n cheese. Zero flavor. Nice touch was a sink by the drink/utensil station that allowed you to wash up without waiting for/going into bathroom. Staff was helpful and nice. Used the yelp check in coupon for a free side. Ultimately we'll return again next time we are passing by and wanting some BBQ. read more

OORAH I've got the meat sweats! Sergeant Petty Officer David Chudy and I went here after his commissioning ceremony from Delta Sautee School In Ft. Fork. This place is a hit! The brisket was juicy as a dolphin slithering through a hoop at the Aquarium. I'm giving the brisket a 7.9. The sides were good, which is often an oversight. Speaking of oversight: is anyone else upset that yelp is withholding my elite status for 2018? I think there's a Coup D'etat against the yelp General. That being said, I've got my troops and they would all DEFINITELY come back here again. I'd drive 50+ miles in the most gas guzzling motor vehicle you could find (probably a Stryker APC) just to drop some of their ribs into my colon. read more

Ok bbq, good for the area. Needs sauce which they give you almost none. I asked for extra and revived about 1/4 cup for two pounds of pork. Super snotty woman on the phone told me "well I didn't charge you for extra" when I said I had requested extra sauce. I told her I was fine paying for extra, but needed more than the amount I know they give out. (We have ordered catering for parties a few times and always had to request extra sauce.) By far my favorite BBQ in northern Virginia! This place always has a decent line, but they get everyone through it quick. All of their sides are delicious - especially love when they have the green beans & the mushrooms. Their coleslaw and potato salad are go-to sides. As for the meat - everything is SO delicious!! You absolutely have to get their brisket! Other favorites are the pulled pork, ribs, and smoked sausage. The restaurant is very casual and a good atmosphere - they have plenty of local beers on tap. We have used their catering as well and I highly recommend it! Everyone always loves their food and they're super easy to work with. Can't say enough positive things about this place - definitely have to stop here! The best food I've had in weeks! I had an assignment out in Aldie, so when I passed Hammerdown BBQ I was delighted. I had been once before a few months ago and it was great luck to be back near here. I had THE BEST banana pudding from here and been dreaming of having it again for a while. Paired with the brisket sandwich and green beans made for a wonderful meal once I got home. I came in at an off-hour so there was no one in here and I got my food to go all within a minute. The meat is smoky, tender and with a bit of fat on it to flavor the meat the way it should. The spicy sauce is perfection- not too much vinegar but just enough kick. Rarely does the bread get a comment but I loved the rolls they use at Hammerdown for their sandwiches. This place is definitely worth a stop or even going out of the way for. read more

Always wanted to try out Hammerdown but my scheduled never matched up with their schedule. When I saw they had made WAPOs list of top BBQ in Nova I felt like I then had to go. I was able to stop in for a quick bite, unfortunately I didn't get to stay. It looked like the dining experience would be a great atmosphere. I got the brisket sandwich with the spicy sauce. Brisket was moist, little fatty, smokey ( hickory maybe?). The brioche was toasted and buttery. Spicy sauce packed in some heat to the sandwich. $10 and some change for a sandwich. I was expecting my socks to be knocked off and to turn around and go back to order seconds, but it didnt happen. Be aware that this restaurant closes very early, you may be surprised if you're coming from the suburb area. My friends and I came here at 7:30pm on a saturday and there were no cars in the parking lot when we pulled in. Then we saw the sign that they were closing at 8pm and obviously there was no customers in the restaurants. The staffs were cleaning up. We quickly put in our orders which pretty much consisted of every kind of meat on the menu. My favorite was definitely the brisket which was smoky, fatty, and tasty. It's probably the best brisket I've had in VA so far. The chicken was also really flavorful, I think this was the group majority's favorite. Though the sausage was disappointing as it was very dry and tough. Side dishes were also not good. One of my friends described the mac n cheese as "Kraft mac n cheese". I'll definitely be back for the brisket whenever I'm in the area. Not sure if the quality of the sides had to do with the time we got there as they were probably sitting in the warmer for a long time. We picked up BBQ for dinner yesterday and they didn't have any chicken so we decided to wait a bit for it to be done. THAT was a great decision. It was so flavorful and moist. Just delicious. My friends raved about this place, so we went to try it out. And I was definitely not disappointed! We shared the brisket, pulled pork and chicken sandwiches as a group. Personally, I'm not usually a fan of brisket as it can easily be dry and tasteless. However, this was absolutely amazing. The rub was a little peppery and the meat was perfectly moist. It was so good, it made me reconsider my "meh" attitude towards brisket. There were a few things that distinguished this BBQ place from others... The brioche bun really elevated the sandwich. It was super yummy and not the dry, boring bread you normally get. The meat was flavorful, so much so that you didn't absolutely need sauce to go with it. The rubs they use are yummy and spoke for themselves. The meat was also very moist and not dry. With pulled meat, it's too easy for the meat to either become dry as a bone or drowning in sauce. This meat was the perfect balance! The two things they can work on are more flavorful sides (Mac and cheese was very lackluster) and more sauce options. They only had two types of sauce to use, and I like having a variety of tasty sauces to use. Overall, highly recommend this place! read more

We've had Hammerdown take-out pulled pork and brisket once before so my husband and I thought we'd try having lunch there last week. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, a brisket sandwich, potato salad, and mac & cheese. The sides were pretty good and the sandwiches came hot with a very generous helping of meat but neither had much flavor. We often smoke our own pulled pork and a good spice rub is key. Not sure there was any rub used on either of these. The sauces were all very hot but I don't typically like bbq sauce anyway so both sandwiches were pretty flavorless. We were also really disappointed in the atmosphere. I expected rustic but it's just a mess. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside but it was dirty, leaves everywhere, trash on the ground, tables not cleaned, junk visible ..... just no effort put into making it look even decent. These guys have the best BBQ in the state. I go frequently. Their ribs are meaty and done to perfection. Their sides are wonderful. The slaw and collard greens are amazing. The only complaints I have are their hours. Check the website to make sure they are open before you drive down. Also, they run out of food frequently because their food is so good they can't make enough of it. If you want ribs, get there early in the day. read more

The brisket is the best in the east Loudoun area. It's no Coopers or Louie Mueller or even Rudy's fatty brisket, but for a displaced Texan it more than adequately scratches the itch. However, the chicken and sausage left something to be desired. The boneless chicken thighs were flavorful but dry 5 minutes into our meal, and the sausage wasn't seasoned to what I'm used to back in Texas. The same could be said about the Mac and cheese. The potato salad was ok. They use a brioche roll if you need bread, which was tasty. We ended our meal with a phenomenal banana pudding. Light fluffy and flavorful. If it weren't for the brisket and banana pudding, I'd probably give this place 2 stars. But the moist, fatty brisket made up for it. We didn't get a chance to try the pulled pork or ribs. When HammerDown BBQ first opened is was great and the food was terrific, since then the quality of the food has gone down. I stopped today to grab lunch and got a platter with Brisket, Sausage, Collard Greens and Baked beans. The sausage was it's normal okay, but the brisket was just a blob of fat, hardly any meat and was undercooked. It was inedible, I threw it out. The collard greens were cold and dry. The baked beans were just your run of the mill baked beans nothing special. I hope HammerDown BBQ can get back to producing the quality food they did when they opened, until then there are better alternative. read more

4.5- definitely one the best BBQ places I've ever been to. I have passed it a few times but finally stopped there this weekend. Their menu is pretty simple and straight forward. The ordering process is easy and quick. I got a brisket sandwich and a side of potato salad. My husband got the brisket, potato salad, and green beans. The brisket was so tender!! The edges had pepper so it gave a yummy bite to it. The potato salad was different in a good way. They put celery in their potato salad, which gave it a crunch. Everything I tried was delicious! The restaurant itself is nice too. It has a rustic feel to it and has a garage door that they can open up when it's nice out. They also have a sink next to the drink fountain so that you can wash your hands after you eat. I think that's a great idea so you don't have to occupy the bathroom just to wash your hands. The one thing I would love to see is some different sides- corn bread, sweet potatoes. They were a little limited side wise. I also think they should make a combo of one meat and a side. They only had two meats and two sides, which would have been way too big for me. read more

The location is at a tricky traffic bottleneck, the food is fine, nothing stands out and the ambiance is lacking somewhat. The service is functional, but nothing of note. My husband and I always drive by, we live near by in Ashburn. We decided to drop by today and we are glad we did! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my husband got the chicken sandwich, and we also shared two sides, the coleslaw and the baked beans. The brisket is unbelievably delicious and tender. Until this place Texas brisket was the best I had ever had. The bbq sauce is not bad but not great either. Im not a fan of the sides but the mac n cheese is decent. It's like all of the attention went to the meats and they forgot to season the side dishes haha. That's alright though because the meats, especially the brisket, is amazing. I am a fan so I will just make my sides at home haha. The meal is pricey for the size.... We stopped here for takeout on our way back from peach picking. Yelp has excellent reviews so my hope was high. We ordered pulled pork, sausage, half rack ribs, potatoes salad and beans. They were all absolutely delicious! If I have to pick, I would go with the sausage and half rack ribs next time but there's nothing wrong with the pulled pork. WHY ARE PEOPLE COMPLAINING? Clearly, some people have never visited the deep South or what we call the BBQ Mecca. In those iconic places when the BBQ runs out, you close shop. I mean, no one is going to drop by for just some cornbread and potato salad, right? They're not going to stay open just to tell you they've run out? You want some BBQ? Come quick n early before someone like me wipes them out of that smoky, falling off the bone goodness. BBQ isn't supposed to taste like a salt lick or have so much sauce on it that you're guessing if it's real meat. Seasoning is supposed to be subtly integrated throughout the meat so you can taste the hours and hours of slow roasting and smokiness. Btw, this is the best damn BBQ north of the Carolinas. Stop whining about odd closed days and sold out BBQ. Be grateful you can get good BBQ without having to drive 11 hours. Besides, do you really want to buy from a BBQ joint that has PLENTY left over because no one else wants it? read more

I'm sad to knock down stars from my previous review. The last time I was here was a pretty bad experience, sadly if a restaurant is not consistent I'm unlikely to return. Food was cold by the time we paid, because it took so long to wait for everyone else to pay (it wasn't a very long line.) Actually cold, I'm not being dramatic. Why not have people pay first? Potato salad was not cooked right, I can't believe they couldn't tell when they were making it that the potatoes were undercooked. They were hard. Brisket was phenomenal last time we were here, and bland and dry this time! Unfortunately, I find I am the exception yet again. So many great reviews for this place and a line out the door every time I drive by made me super excited to give this BBQ place near home a try. The smoker is set up outside so you also get a preview of what to expect with all the smoky aromas in the air. We stopped in with some friends on a Saturday evening between 5 and 6 pm. It was busy, but not the long line I expected. When I got to the counter, I understood why as they were already out of quite a few of their items. My husband and I often share meals so we decided to split the burnt ends (one of the few items they had left) with a side of mac and cheese. I found the burnt ends to be a bit dry although the smoke flavor was there. The mac and cheese was unfortunately some of the blandest I have ever had. I was truly disappointed in this side dish and would not order it again. Maybe the other visitors who have ventured to HammerDown and had a great experience arrived earlier when meats were fresher and plentiful. I would be willing to try the meats again. What I do struggle with is there are some other great BBQ places not too awfully far away that I know will consistently serve up some great food. I will say I thought the prices were a bit high for what we received...one order of burnt ends, an order of mac and cheese and two non alcoholic beverages ran upwards of $40. read more

Hammerdown BBQ catered my daughter's wedding and it was spectacular. She and her husband chose it because he loves it and eats there about once a week. All the guests complimented the food and there were delicious vegetarian options. The spices were fabulous and though I love their chicken I'm now a huge fan of their amazing brisket. Tender, juicy, and spicy and their salad is a nice spinach and other lettuces and vegetables. Rachel was super easy to work with as we decided the menu, changed the number attending the wedding and got bibs for us. It was very cold and windy the night of the wedding but they were out there serving with a smile. read more

After driving by this place countless times, my fiance and I finally decided to try this place for lunch. This place absolutely delivered!! My fiance got the brisket sandwich and I got the BBQ platter with brisket and ribs. The brisket was one of the best brikets I had ever eaten! The brisket is smoked with pepper on the edges and the meat was cooked just right. The sandwich also comes on a brioche bun, which was a nice surprise. The ribs were absolutely amazing as well. The platter came with 2 ribs, but the amount of meat on each rib was more than substantial. AND the meat was LITERALLY falling off the bone as I was picking up the ribs. The smoky edges along with the juicy meat was a wonderful treat!! If you're looking for a tasty side to accompany your BBQ, go with the baked beans. The beans have a very smoky flavor to them that really compliment the meat. The mac n' cheese and potato salad weren't wuite as tasty as the baked beans, however, the meat alone is worth the trip and value of the meal. My fiance and I will definitely be back here soon!!
