I am a very picky barbecue eater. Before moving to the DC metro area I lived in Memphis & Austin, arguably two of the greatest barbecue cities in the world. I don't go into a restaurant like this looking for tablecloths or judging their snappy uniforms. I am looking for one thing, great barbecue, and I expect the Real Deal. Pouring sauce over a roast beef doesn't cut it. HammerDown BBQ has the Real Deal, genuine barbecue. Woodsmoke fills the air around their parking lot. You can taste it before you even get through the front door. Their pulled pork and beef brisket sandwiches were excellent. Sides are outstanding as well. The food is so good! I wish there was a way to walk to it from our house, but the area isn't pedestrian friendly at all. This place is always packed with patrons until they run out of food, so go early. They offer outdoor seating. Great place to stop along route 50 on your way to/from Middleburg. Not far from Route 15. HammerDown has really good barbecue, and I will definitely be returning, buuuttt....., Here's the thing; I believe that if they were to enter this barbecue in competition, they would be disqualified; why? Because they finish with steam, as you would in a New York Deli. That's a BBQ no no. The ribs and the brisket had great smoky flavor, and deep smoke rings, but they were too tender. The ribs were falling off the bone tender, and the brisket didn't need a knife and fork. The meat should have just a little bit of fight back, to be proper barbecue. I know it seems unfair that the rules for great NY pastrami and are not the same, but I don't make them I just observe them. Having said all that....., Don't stop doing what you're doing, HammerDown. There is no nice way to say this so I'll just come out and say it: the food is unbelievably BLAND. All of it, the meats, the sides, the desserts - it was all shockingly bland. I should have known something was up when it didn't smell like a BBQ joint when we walked in - it just smelled like nothing. We ordered pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, three sides: potato salad, coleslaw and Mac n cheese, and banana puddings for dessert. Everything LOOKED delicious, but it all tasted anything but delicious. I'm literally at a loss for words to describe how disappointing this food was. They have one kind of BBQ sauce and a "hot" sauce which doesn't deserve to be called hot sauce b/c it is not hot at all. Neither the pork nor the chicken were dry- they were just utterly and completely flavorless. The Mac n cheese and potato salad could have been the same thing had it hot been for the texture, and the former ingredients served hot while the latter was served cold. The banana pudding was anything but banana - not even the "fresh" banana slices on top that had already turned brown tasted like banana and when you put your spoon into the "pudding" the whole blob of it moved as one like a jello mold, and the vanilla wafers were stale. I have literally eaten BBQ all across the country and this is by far the worst I have ever had. I might be able to understand if maybe one or two things weren't as flavorful as the the other items, but for all of the food across the board to be bland is just mind boggling. I'm not sure if the rave reviews from others are from people who had the brisket, or from people who just don't know what good BBQ is - but be warned: if you're a BBQ connoisseur stay away, you will be disappointed you just blew $40+ on the blandest meal of your life for two. If you do want GOOD BBQ keep driving about another mile down 50W and go to Pit Stop BBQ at Gilbert's Corner - their BBQ is FANTASTIC! This is close to my home and a bit out of the way. The food is well worth the drive. The chicken is absolutely fantastic. Truly recommend it as in most BBQ places the chicken normally takes a backseat to the other meats. Here it gets the same love and attention. This is possibly the best BBQ spot that I've ever been to. I got to try both the brisket and the chicken and they were very tender and juicy. Also love the sides and dessert! Wow the brisket melts in your mouth! I got the brisket sandwich with mac-n-cheese. Food was great and the atmosphere is cozy on a cold rainey day. The staff are friendly and helpful. The owner went to every table to check on his customers. I like resturants like this with owners that really care about their food and taking care of customers. We went to Hammerdown BBQ I think on their 2nd day of being open. The place smelled so good from outside. We had a pork BBQ sandwich ($8) and the 2 meat platter ($16). For the platter we picked the pork and brisket. The pork was excellent. The brisket was being cut from 2 pieces of meat. The first section was great, the other section was full of fat. We had the beans and Mac and Cheese for the sides. The beans were a mix of different types of beans and were pretty good. The Mac and cheese was good but portions were pretty small (about size of golf ball). Overall I think it was good but a little pricey vs other places like Willard's which has larger portions. There is a bar but I think I heard they have 6-8 weeks before it opens. This place also has outdoor seating and will be great once it warms up. read more

I love BBQ but, truthfully, have never understood why BBQ aficionados love brisket, until I had HammerDown BBQ's brisket. THE BEST! If you can get brisket right, everything else follows. I was driving by this place and my stomach and nose told me to turn around and go back. Glad I did because it was some of the best BBQ I have ever had. The Brisket sandwich was so moist and delicious especially with there spicey bbq sauce smothered all over it. I also had Baked beans and Potato salad which were also very very good. The beans were different then most I have had. They were a combination of 3 or 4 different kinds and had a real nice flavor to them. This is some of the best BBQ I have had anyplace in the world. We have eaten here twice now and the pulled pork is basically melt in your mouth yummy even without any sauce, but the sauce is very well balanced as well. We had the brisket once and it was delicious. The potato salad was well put together and tasty, and the cole slaw was a vinegar based slaw as opposed to a heavy mayo based slaw: I like both types. I have not had the ribs yet, but will definitely try them (we will see b/c I am pretty picky about ribs that I like). The service is friendly and they really seem passionate about their product, which makes me want to support this local business even more. If you like BBQ you should definitely give HammerDown BBQ a try. read more
