Unfortunately the service wasn't super attentive which to be very clear they did get packed, but afterwards they were clearly empty and still made my friend wait for an hour on his food that he had ordered online. He asked them twice about his order and both times he was brushed off and told "it's being made". Then one of us stepped in to ask for him, they realized they hadn't even begun making his order. Now onto the food, I don't recommend their mashed potatoes they aren't salted, the corn bread is fine but not great. The pork ribs full stack is a lot, but not very good but with the barbecue sauces they provide it's quite good. The St. Louis ribs were stellar! Very delicious. Their sandwich very tasty. Their brisket is semi-good. Some of us received dryer brisket and others a juicier one. So their consistency isn't great. Would I come back here? No probably not. I have driven Pass this restaurant for several years only living five minutes away finally decide to stop by. Pulling into the parking lot I was expecting to smell the smell of the smokers similar to other restaurants around the area however I could not . Then Upon entering the restaurant, it's your typical barbecue style interior nothing crazier fancy and enough seating for a good amount of people . I got here 20 minutes after they opened. There were two people ahead of me in the restaurant . I ordered a pound of the chicken and coleslaw family sized to go . The rub they use and smoke taste of the chicken is good however it is slightly pricey for what you get. I ordered a pound of the chicken and their family size coleslaw which is around a pound in the container they use. The coleslaw is just your basic cabbage coleslaw nothing special nothing fancy but again the chicken has a good smoke taste and there house bbq sauce is good but the slightly spicy sweet sauce is a lot better however for 1 pound of chicken and around a pound of cabbage style coleslaw it comes in at $30 read more

This review is specifically for the new pastrami sandwich. As with their brisket, the pastrami itself is fantastic. I think the only room for real improvement is the to go packaging. I love this thing. The sandwich is pretty large and a meal to itself. It comes with a good bit of pastrami, sauerkraut, and horseradish sauce on rye bread. I typically steer clear of sauerkraut but in this sandwich it works. The horseradish sauce was not overpowering but but I could have done with a little more kick. Next time I'll ask for more and sauce it myself. While the sandwich was great, the to-go packaging did not lend itself well to this. By the time I got to eat it (~3 minutes later) the bread had already turned soggy and it made eating the sandwich a bit sloppy. Fortunately the flavors were great so I kept going. I would recommend that if you order this to go, get the bread and fillers separate, then assemble on your own. Also, since the sandwich is so big, I would also suggest cutting it in half to make it a bit more manageable to eat. If you dine in, I don't think you'll have any of these issues. The last few trips to Hammerdown have been underwhelming and annoying. I'm not sure what's going on or maybe I just happen to go on off days. The brisket and other meats used to be to die for. On the last few visits the meat has just been really dry and not fresh tasting. I'm annoyed that the iced tea is either empty or made incorrectly and has a funny taste and cloudy. They don't have sweet tea, but they *sometimes* have a simple syrup bottle for you to make your own. Their sauces come out of these little tiny spigots and usually need to be refilled. Absolutely the best bbq quality I've had in the area. This place may not look over the top but I assure you it's beyond expectations. The sides are less to be desired; nothing stands out to me between the collards, slaw, and Mac but the baked beans are delicious. It's a mix of pinto/black/kidney/no-name bean and they have flavor. The pastrami: Come. On. This pastrami is just out of this world. Perfect rub, perfect texture. Perfect flavor. Nothing compares. I'm told it's not always available but when it is they sell out quick. The brisket is second to the pastrami. All of the same qualities however my portion had a little less flavor which I balanced with the house sauces. So moist, so tender and just great overall. I'm not a rib fan but after chit-chatting with a few of the employees during a down time for them they offered up a rib for tasting and let me tell you...it's the definition of fall off the bone. I soon became a fan of ribs and I'm coming back specifically for them. The sauces are simple and few to choose from leaving your with little to no dilemma of which one to use. The spicy one is pretty good and the regular is...regular but good taste and the vinegar is what it is...not my cup of tea. The beer selection is pretty strong for this area. They pull a lot from the breweries around the area and they have a few taps from the better breweries from Richmond. This place is so small town in the biggest county. I met a few people working the lunch shift but I spent the most time talking to Damien. He had such pride in the place and was more than accommodating. I had questions about the meat before ordering and he had no issues giving me the info I needed. I located a spot at the bar after eating outside he talked a little bit about the history and how things were going. After asking more questions about the meat he brought out the rib sampler and talked all about the process and cooking. He's a true ambassador to the restaurant and you can tell he's very proud of its success. Thank you Damien! Don't know why, but I was surprised by how much I liked the food. I had the ribs and brisket combo and both were delicious. For my sides, I had beans (tasty mix of 2 kinds) and cornbread (solid but I've had better). My son ate my leftovers and declared them yum - so I'll definitely go back. Went to Hammerdown today for a winter ride with the American Legion Riders group I belong to. The owners just laid a new motorcycle only parking pad which was a great surprise. I think we were the 1st to use it. Great food, great atmosphere and I highly recommend this great roadside BBQ place. Came in for a date night! This place closes early so we took off work early on a Friday to grab dinner around 4pm. We got the platter deal where you choose 2 meats and 2 sides and we grabbed 2 beers. O-M-G, this food was wonderfully surprising! My fav was the brisket, it cut like butter and had soooo much flavor! The pullpork was tender, but honestly, for me it needed BBQ sauce to compliment it for full flavor potential! We really enjoyed the potato salad and green beans. How did it take me sooooo many years to stop in and try this place? I don't think I've ever had such a great experience at a BBQ place! Usually there is something I get that is just OK. Not in this case! The smoked sausage and chicken were absolutely killer! The mac and cheese and greens were also incredible. HammerDown BBQ is a small BBQ joint on U.S. 50. The address is technically "Aldie, VA" but the immediate area is known as "Lenah." The building that houses HammerDown BBQ used to house a little store named: "The British Pantry & Cafe." They sold a variety of goods, foods, teas and so forth from the UK. I've been to HammerDown BBQ a couple of times now. Both times I've ordered everything to go - I ordered the Brisket and the green beans both times. I also got the Mac and Cheese and the smoked sausage the first time. First - the brisket. Both times it has been tender. But not consistent flavor profile-wise. The first time - the Brisket had a smoky aspect to it. The second time - no smokiness - but strong hints of black pepper. Both times the green beans have been different flavor-wise. The Mac and Cheese was not very cheesy. When I got home, I shredded some cheese, added it to the mix, and threw it in the oven to melt and warm up. The smoked sausage was good, but I felt like it needed a bit of char on the casing. You can order in to eat - the first time I visited - it was a hot day out - and it was uncomfortable inside temperature-wise. There is a bar area and tables and flat panel HD TVs. An easy 5 star. The location isn't very close to me, and I still go out of my way to come here when I want bbq. The consistency of the quality is amazing. I haven't had poor meat once from HammerDown including sausage, pork and brisket. The Brisket has great pepper flavor on it and is sliced very nicely while still remaining juicy. The Mac N Cheese has a nice Smokey flavor to it and I recommend adding some of their squirrel sauce to the Mac n cheese if you'd like to try a different combination with some spice. read more

The physical location of HammerDown has absolutely amazing barbecue and chicken just like the truck. Sometimes the line is out the door and they will run out of stuff. I have never had the ribs because my kids keep stealing them and who will take ribs from a kid. The sides are delicious. My kids love the homemade Mac and cheese. I will say that Willard's Brisket and slaw from Willard's is still the best in the area and Hammer Down is a close second. The BBQ from HammerDown is better. read more

WOW amazing bbq ! I got a pound of the brisket , a pound of sausage and a large side of the coleslaw. The brisket was perfect . Not too fatty , not too lean with a nice smokey flavor. This is a restaurant that recently opened up about 5 minutes from my house. My neighborhood doesn't have many 'good' food places since it is more in the suburbs (almost rural) area of Loudoun County. This place apparently used to be a food truck and was so good that they made a permanent location. We tried the food on an early friday evening (apparently they sell out if you come too late). I think something with mushrooms on it/in it was already sold out by 5pm when we arrived. We got two of the platters that come with two sets of meats. The most surprising thing was the chicken. I think it was chicken breast, and usually chicken breast is dry.. especially when grilled/smoked. It was extremely juicy and had a lot of flavor. It was my wife's favorite meat! I really liked the brisket because it was super tender and flavorful. Out of the meats, I wish the spareribs were a bit more tender, but they were delicious as well. The sides were good too. The most memorable side was the beans. My wife really liked the beans. Not your typical baked beans as they had different types of beans in there and didn't taste like they were from the 'can'. Prices are fair, not too expensive, but not cheap either. Would def be back for some more BBQ. read more
