Except he didn't, and I also asked for Parliaments, not Marlboros. He proceeded to check my friend's bag for the pack of cigarettes, ransacked through my purse to make sure I hadn't stolen them, and then showed me on the iPad that I had paid for something. Yes sir, I know I paid. But you never gave me the cigarettes, so I just paid you $9.50 for thin air. Eventually he huffed and puffed, and handed me the pack of Parliaments that I had originally asked for, but not without making me feel like a crook and a pain in the ass in the process. If you need smokes or other convenience store items, do yourself a favor and just drive into town. I won't be coming back here again.

As to be expected in a store like this some of the stuff is crap but other stuff is pretty nice. Nothing really nice but sometimes pretty nice is nice enough. Inside is crowded and chaotic. Always seems a lot of people in here and it's difficult to move around. Takes a bit of patience but it's not too bad. It tends to over flow with stuff so they put some of it out in front on the sidewalk. Gives it a pleasantly tacky look. One of the things they really advertise are the 25 cent hot dogs. I would never get the courage to actually try one and I suspect they aren't exactly the highest quality but just seeing the price is kind of cool. The prices inside on most of the stuff inside is dirt cheap. I got some six buck T-shirts that didn't even shrink five sizes when I washed them. This place is exactly what it seems. It is an anachronism that manages to survive in a rather expensive and ritzy town like Newburyport just be being itself. The staff have always been pleasant and helpful even in middle of all the crazy activity that is going on. It's a cheap place that has lots of cheap but decent stuff. A dude was buying like 12 hot dogs with full confidence, the cashier looked like he hasn't slept since 2004, and someone dropped a slushie and just walked away like it never happened. Meanwhile two guys were arguing about energy drinks like it was a scientific debate. I grabbed my drink and left before I got involved in whatever was going on. Came back outside, banana guy gone. When I placed the beer upon the counter, the older African-American woman who was working asked me for my ID. When I pulled out the paper ID, she got very angry and said "I thought I told you to stop coming in here with that paper!" (I had never once been inside this gas station, let alone attempt to purchase anything.) I told her that I had never been into this store and that she probably had me confused with someone else, but she was still angry. I turned to walk out without my items, but she stopped me and said that she'd "let me buy beer one last time." (Again, I had never before been inside.) So, I said okay, and asked if I could also purchase a pack of Marlboros. She again got very angry with me and said she can't take the paper ID as it would be "breaking the law" However, she was still letting me purchase the beer. (Huh?) She then proceeded to tell me "just have one of your friends come in here and buy it if you need it that bad." I laughed and asked well wouldn't that be breaking the law? To which she had no reply but further angry mumbling. Again, I get I shouldn't expect every gas station to not scan my ID, but if you're gonna do that at least be consistent with it and don't contradict yourself. I just don't understand how you can sell someone beer but refuse to sell them cigarettes.
