I asked if it was soft shell or hard. was told soft. when I got home I took the lobster out and was able to get all the lobster out with just my hands. Literally was no effort. The lobster was so soft I didn't need anything! Not a good thing because the amount of lobster I got out was so tiny, I'm talking if I could squish my palm together the entire lobster would fit! This is our go-to grocery store. The selection is great, the prices are great, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Years ago, we wouldn't buy meat there, but they have really stepped it up and now we buy everything there. My biggest pet peeve is that it's always really cold there. I suppose that's better for keeping the food fresh, but I always try to bring a sweater when shopping in the summer. Brrrrr! read more

I know going to the grocery store on Sunday is a bad idea, it felt like there was a church next door. Slow shoppers and all in the dairy isle. The dairy isle is too small. Make it bigger you have the room. The deli was too slow as well the already took down one of their slicers at 3pm when they close at 7. The staff alone were helpful. Also when the sign says service dogs are allowed that doesnt mean you carry around your little shitzu in your jacket. open a window in your car and itll be fine. For a lot of seniors its so hard to get out to the stores and you made it so much easier with this plan. Market Basket earned my respect when years ago one of the owners (Arthur?), stood up to his family and the board to protect his employees and customers. The store has also always maintained a good selection of food at very fair prices. Unfortunately, their Covid policies have been very weak, allowing too many customers into the store at one time, no oversight of proper mask wearing by customers and employees, and no enforcement of social distancing other than directional signs on the floor. So sadly, my family has opted to shop at Hannaford and Trader Joe's where they are much more diligent about protecting the safety of everyone in their stores amidst this pandemic. read more

I was at this Market Basket this afternoon. Although all the employees were 'masked', one bagger was wearing a mask made from one layer of an old t-shirt so thin you could see through it. I saw two others wearing masks below their noses. Every shopper I saw was properly masked and observing social distance as best we could. Your mask protects me; my mask protects you. Until management explains and enforces proper masking, I will not return. My safety and the safety of those I love matters more than shopping here. read more

For the company as a whole, generally prices are a better deal than the competition, including, in some circumstances, the 'big box' mass marketers - with the caveat the those competitors' specials, especially in meats, sometimes represent a better value. On occasion, the quality of a produce item can be problematic, however, it is never a problem if one takes the time to *look* at the items. Of the various branches in NH with which I am familiar, the Newington and Stratham stores are clearly the leaders overall. I love Market Basket in general, it's a great company. I routinely shop at the Somersworth, Laffayette and Woodbury Ave. locations depending on where I am in my busy schedule. Never had a problem in Somersworth or Portsmouth on Laffayette, but the Woodbury Ave location is staffed with some of the rudest people I've ever had the misfortune to encounter (with a couple of notable exceptions- they should go work at a better location). This isn't a review prompted by some one-off bad experience, I'm talkin' EVERY TIME I go there the employees are snotty, unfriendly, bad tempered and lack even rudimentary customer service skills. I've read the other reviews her and don't see much mention of this, and yet I hear local people talk about it all the time. Management should do something about this, unless of course the management is the problem. read more

Market Basket is a decent supermarket. Prices are better than Shaw's, Hannaford's, and Fresh Market. I like Hannaford's better because it's more convenient and the produce lasts a little longer, but Market Basket will be cheaper. My favorite answer to supermarket shopping is to cross the bridge and go to Kittery. The combination of Golden Harvest, Carl's, Terra Cotta, Beach Pea, and Hebert's are way better than any supermarket but Market Basket is cheaper than the Kittery stores too. read more

Well, thanks to Yelp I was able to find this very efficient grocery on my way to Maine. It's not dazzling, just basic, but shopping in NH means no sales tax on anything and no deposits on every bit of plastic that you buy (I like to stock up on designer bubbles water). On the day I went they had an incredible deal on deli roast beef, $4.99/lb. for some awesome rare delicious beef. I haven't encountered rb this good in a long time, which hints at their butcher dept. being on the ball. Easy to get to from I-95. read more

If you are looking for value in grocery shopping....as they say in Salt Lake City "this is the place" There is no atmosphere..period, the Belgian owners of Hannaford win that in spades. The produce is pretty good, what they claim they are known for...but it almost always wrapped,so forget about small portions. The house brands are usually pretty good, often on sale and way less expensive than brand names. As a family company they do not have to pay off big debts courtesy of their investment bankers. They do not require you to give up your privacy to get a fair price (ditto Hannaford). Gave up years of shopping at Shaws after they got bought out for the umpteenth time and require your life history to receive a fair price. Oh did I say free coffee? (caveat: the regular stuff is often unavailable..so only decaf is still on tap) They frequently have specials with very low prices.... read more

I recently moved cross-town from the area near the Lafayette Rd. store to an area near the Woodbury Ave. store. To all exterior appearances, they look very similar -- but a closer look reveals significant issues with the Woodbury Ave. store. First, it is smaller, and thus the aisles are narrower and more cramped. Secondly, it is nowhere near as clean or well-maintained. My third issue is the layout -- it makes no sense in places. In most stores the paper goods and cleaning products are in adjacent aisles (as they are on Lafayette Rd.); here they are four aisles apart. But the "last straw" is the check-out experience: always crowded, always slow -- and the checkers are more interested in talking to each other than providing service to the customer. It is high time Portsmouth had a nice Market Basket like the stores in Seabrook and Epping. read more

I've been comparison shopping on the Seacoast for a while and the prices at Market Basket just can't be beat. Meats are fresh; veggies are usually looking pretty good and they accept internet coupons. Staff has been pleasant and when I've got my hands full with the kids they've even helped me get my cart & groceries out to the car. I'm thrilled that they have begun posting coupons on the grocery aisles. And if you're there with the kids you can get free American cheese slices at the deli and cookies at the bakery to keep little hands (and mouths) occupied while you shop. read more

I was excited to check out a Market Basket store after hearing all the hype about the low, low prices so when I saw this location from the street after driving around frantically trying to find a gas station off 95, I had to stop in. This store does get points for being very clean and well maintained but I didn't think the prices were super, crazy low. They do have their own Market Basket brand of stuff which is a good price, but in some cases the sale prices of name brand items were the same price as the MB brand items. Also, their sale prices on some name brand items were not that exceptional. For example, they were selling Wheat Thins for 2/$5 but I just picked up a bunch at CVS last week for 2/$4. Blah. Also, the prices their fruits and vegetables I found to be on par with other large grocery stores. I did end up stockpiling their Market Basket brand flavored seltzer water which was 69 cents for a 2 liter. Now that's a good deal. I'd stop in again if I was in the area, but I caution you to be sketpical of all the low, low prices hype. read more
