Another view of the couch we supposedly broke

It's not possible to give no stars, but if so, I would. Please be wary of this hotel. The management and I assume ownership is shady. My sister and I booked a suite for a getaway with our 81 year old mother. Hampton Inn is usually consistent as a decent stay. The hotel was fine. I requested extra towels and picked them up at the front desk; a delivery to our room apparently wasn't an option. The room was adequate with 2 queens, a large desk/credenza and a red loveseat. There was not a chest/dresser where we could unpack our suitcases. The fabric on the loveseat was stained so we opted to cover it in a sheet we found in the closet. The bathroom door was a sliding barn door that did not stay closed, so not good for privacy. The breakfast was okay but on a Saturday morning the only options were yogurts, fruit, make your own pancakes and breads. After waiting for a while I asked the attendant if there would be anymore eggs and sausage. She lost it and said she was doing the best she could and everyone already ate everything and it would be 30 minutes before she had anything ready. I requested a late check out to be at noon and was granted because we had a late flight. When I went to check out the desk was unmanned and a basket was left for dropping key cards. I'd never experienced this before. Upon getting home I was prepared to write a great review of the hotel because it was everything we needed. Until I found a $100 charge for a broken couch. I was shocked because I never heard from the hotel telling me they were charging me for this and certainly not providing proof. The sofa fabric was greasy and stained so we covered it with a sheet. It was a sleeper sofa, but we never pulled it out. The hotel claimed we broke the sofa and were charged. At this point I was hundreds of miles away at home and didn't have anyway to prove otherwise. However, I always review hotels and take pictures before I leave. My intention was to rate this hotel well. After I received the charge I called the hotel repeatedly asking for the manager. He was never available. The last time I called the front desk person questioned why I wanted to talk to him. I explained my situation (which she was obviously aware of) and then interrogated me as to why I would have taken my own pictures of the hotel room. At this point I became suspicious. The hotel manager never called me back. He emailed me pictures and that was the extent of my explanation. I believe he is a pretty shady hotel manager but probably bilking customers at the direction of the owners. I now think twice before lodging at a Hampton Inn and have no interest in returning to Dearborn.

Smooth Check-in proceeds and parking. Which makes this a great start This hotel was convenient for my time in Detroit. They do have an extra lot for parking. It's tight when you pull into the hotel, but you're parking behind. They have three diamond reward members' spots right by the entrance, which is nice. I didn't get to try the breakfast or check out any amenities because I only stayed a few hours. The one issue I had was that the bathroom had a weird smell but was overall clean. There may be water damage around the wall by the toilet, so I'm not sure. But the bathroom did smell. It was clean but had a weird smell, as I left right after check-in and didn't arrive back in the hotel until midnight. I went 4 hours later and didn't use the bathroom much, only to shower. Excellent shower pressure. This is the first Hampton Inn I've been to, and the water pressure was good. I wanted to let the front desk person know of the smell on my way out, but there was no one at the desk or around when I left after 4am. But overall, it's in a good location. There is lots to eat in the area. I saw that when I first arrived.

The service has been a lot better, with more attentive staff. The front desk rep Jay was pretty cool and his energy is welcoming. By favorite about this hotel is the bar and grill, Grill 39. Food is great and drinks are cheap and strong. They have an amazing happy hour menu. Carla the manager is by far one of the best bartenders I've ever encountered, she has great people skills and takes care of all her guest. This lady even went to the kitchen and rolled up her sleeves and continued business because of a call out of kitchen staff. I had one negative experience at the bar which was with the server/bartender "Pam" she was pretty rude and pushy. I was explaining to that a discount is used with my current status and reservation (that I always receive) and she cut me off and told me " that's breakfast only, you can't do that over here, is there something else I can help you with " that really didn't sit too well with me, but I continued on with my meal. But other than that good place to sleep and eat.

After a long day of traveling, I was exhausted and just wanted to get some rest, but the condition of the room made that impossible. That first night alone, we had to switch rooms three times because the rooms had not been cleaned properly. We were told the hotel was short-staffed and that it had been an ongoing issue. The following morning, we had to change rooms yet again because of a dirty shower and a leaking ceiling. To the manager's credit, they waived the charge for one night, which I appreciated. However, the overall condition of the hotel was unacceptable. In addition to the cleanliness issues, the property is in need of significant renovations. Even the chairs in the restaurant area were noticeably worn and outdated. Based on my experience, I would not choose to stay at another DoubleTree after this visit.

Their staff did an admirable job in dealing with a sudden emergency. We were sitting around a big table in their Dearborn Conference Room on Friday when around 6:30pm the area was hit with a power outage. Somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 customers lost power, including the hotel. Whatever happened also affected the hotel generator, because that was knocked out too. No heat, no hot water, no electricity, no internet. The hotel staff did what they could and set up emergency contractor lights in the lobby area and dining area. I'm not sure how, but they were able to serve the traditional Embassy Suites hot breakfast the next morning. My visit got off to a great start, with a big suite room and an excellent check-in experience. Some of our party arrived early and we enjoyed their complimentary Happy Hour drinks and snacks. Their staff was wonderful -especially the food service workers who set up that hot breakfast in dim lighting. One of the guys made me laugh when he said eating breakfast in the cold and dark reminded him of being back in the service!

She informed me of hotel amenities and their hours of operation then directed me to my room. Room was fine, albeit a tad worn. I had a burger in the bar which was very good. Bartender was friendly and efficient. There was a loud, obnoxious woman at the bar who I was able to avoid until I spoke with a man at the bar. Evidently, she was a regular customer. She directed a comment toward me that was factually incorrect and when I attempted to explain to her why, she exploded and started screaming at me. I stepped away, gathered my stuff and waited for my check at the end of the bar farthest from her. She continued screaming at me from across the bar, raving loudly that she would pray for me--which I found particularly bizarre and rather scary. I asked her repeatedly to stop shouting at me. While waiting I had a polite conversation with a man at the end of the bar that I had purposefully placed between she and me. The bartender returned and she finally got her to stop screaming. I paid and left. In the morning at checkout I told the front desk person about my very negative and frightening experience. She apologized and said that they expect people not to "talk politics". I pointed out to her that Fox News was playing on every TV in the lobby and bar and she apologized again. I took the shuttle to the airport. Driver was nice and professional and even tried to help me obtain a cart. Despite other positive aspects of the hotel, I will not be returning to a place that allows crazy people to drink to oblivion then verbally attack other guests.
