When you make a reservation you can add details about your visit - we were here for my fiancé's birthday, so I added that detail at some point. We also brought along our dog as some of the rooms are pet friendly. Check-in process was super easy and the staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable! Shout out to Erica! She let us know about a bunch of dog-friendly establishments in the area and gave our pup lots of pets. When we got to the room, we were delighted to find dog bowls out and on the floor, extra poop bags on the desk, a special cookie and a bandana for our pup, AND a birthday card! Talk about going above and beyond! Everything in our room was comfy and super clean, we had a fantastic stay. Also - you cannot beat the location. First things first, I have to give this hotel a huge shoutout because this is my second time staying here, and every single time I come, I absolutely love it. Now let me tell y'all how I thought I had everything together... You know those moments when you've packed your bags, made it through the airport, landed safely, got your transportation figured out, checked into the hotel, and you're feeling real accomplished? Yeah... that lasted about five minutes. Because your girl forgot to call the bank before leaving town. So there I am trying to use my card and suddenly it's giving me the "absolutely not" treatment. I'm standing there confused, looking at my card like, "Excuse me? We've been through too much together for this." After a quick call to Navy Federal, I realized exactly what happened. They flagged the transaction because I was using my card in Detroit. Which, honestly, I appreciate because fraud is real. But baby... that 45-minute wait on the phone had me questioning my life choices. All I needed was for somebody to say, "Yep, that's Destineé. Turn her card back on." Once everything was sorted out and they got me back up and running, I headed to my room and took a moment to decompress. And if you're part of the HS community, then you already know. After traveling, walking through airports, carrying bags, and dealing with flare-ups, sometimes the greatest luxury isn't a fancy meal or a beautiful view... It's finding a bathroom, getting comfortable, and letting your body rest for a few minutes. So that's exactly what I did. I unpacked a little, gathered myself, gave my body a chance to breathe, and got ready for everything the weekend had in store. They are truly the gems of this place. I see the same people year after year and they truly care for you while you are here. I've gotten excellent advice about where and what to eat, where to visit, and even life advice. From Cassandra who answers the phone, to group sales, to the front desk, to the thorough and patient housekeeper Jasmine, to the really kind van drivers/ concierge (Captain Tony, Cory, and Darryl), to the nice woman at the bar restaurant downstairs. Everyone does an amazing job. This place is a great value also. It's an all suites hotel so you get a lot of space. I love having the sleeping room separate from the living room so if some people in your party want to stay up and chat they can do that while I can have my peace and nap in the bedroom. The sound proofing isn't perfect but it's pretty good for a hotel room. I also love the deep soaking tub. I always arrive earlier than everyone else so I can take a bath right when I get there. There is a shuttle service that is very useful for trips within 5 miles. I've seen many people use it to get to the sports arena nearby. I tend to use it to go to nearby restaurants, dance clubs and the whole foods nearby before all the markets opened downtown. They just went through some serious remodeling and everything looks really good. The location in Greektown makes it walkable to most places. I'm most interested in walking to Hart Plaza, which is about 10 minutes walking. It's also about 10-15 minutes walking to the DAX bus stop. I've even taken the 20 minute walk to the Fox theater because I wanted to see that building. Its best to walk with someone if your going that far and keep your wits about you, but I felt completely safe (as a brown woman who grew up in NYC). I love how much Detroit is growing and changing for the more beautiful. If I had one complaint it would be the music that they play in the lobby. I wish they would play Motown (because of the city we're in), techno or Greek music (because we're in Greektown and the place is called the Atheneum). I feel like that would be more true to where we are, but that's such a small thing, and maybe just me. All in all, I LOVE staying here and will continue to stay here when ever I'm in Detroit.
