Scheduled an appointment for the Lihue office. It was difficult to find, no signs on the outside…read more When we got inside it smelled like old food. The waiting area was small and dirty, stacks of random stuff on the floor and on top the mini fridge. It didn't even feel like a medical office, but like someone's messy house. Then a lady in full PPE came in to throw something away in the "lobby" trash can and whatever it was landed on the floor, but she didn't notice. It was at this point I decided if it didn't feel professional or sanitary in the waiting area, I didn't really want my small child having his first dental examination here. I asked the lady if we could cancel the appt, and she charged us $25. She asked why, and I told her it didn't feel clean. Her response was because they were renting the space. Then the lady in full PPE (yellow robe/mask) came back out and tried to get us to come back with her for the appt (I think she was confused and didn't know we were leaving). I don't know why she was in PPE in the waiting area or if she ever changed it, but it didn't seem normal. Overall it was just a very awkward and uncomfortable situation... I've never cancelled an appointment after showing up and I don't really like to leave negative reviews, but it if helps someone avoid feeling they way I did in the future, then it will be worth it.

I had an extremely upsetting experience with Dr. Kristi Koyanagi, and I WOULD NOT recommend her…read more I have some dental anxiety, which I explained beforehand. I was not rude or difficult, and I tried to be very understanding throughout the appointment. Despite that, she seemed irritated with me and was incredibly rough. During the procedure, there was a dental tool or band placed tightly around the tooth she was filling, presumably to isolate or shape the filling and protect the neighboring teeth. I don't remember what the tool was called, I do remember the dental assistant asking her if she wanted a slightly bigger size. She said the one they have now would be fine. After she was done with filling the tooth, She was pulling and yanking on said tool with so much force that I had to use a surprising amount of strength in my neck and jaw just to keep my head still. At the same time, her fingers were repeated scraping against the outside of my cheek, but the end it was becoming painful. The next day my muscles were sore , it literally felt like I did some kind of neck, jaw exercis For clarity, I'll call the tooth she was working on "Tooth A" and the neighboring tooth "Tooth B." Immediately after the procedure, I felt an unfamiliar bump with my tongue. I knew it had not been there before. Afterward,she seemed to be in a rush and was quick to escort me to the front and I left the office. When I got into my car, I looked at my teeth in the mirror. Tooth A looked fine. But tooth B had a filling protruding from the center it literally looked like A NIPPLE It looked completely unnatural and was obvious enough that I cannot understand how it went unnoticed before I left the office. I was so overwhelmed by the entire experience that I broke down crying on the drive home. After about 30 minutes to an hour, my partner convinced me to call KDC and ask if Dr. Koyanagi could correct it. I was told that she was no longer in the office and that I would have to wait until the following month to see her again. For someone who "developed a love for dentistry", "received numerous awards & a scholarship for her success through dental school", "active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, "thrilled to serve her community". I could not believe you left me with such an obvious abnormality on the neighboring tooth without it being noticed or addressed. And the cherry on the cake THE FILLING COMPLETELY LIFTED AFTER TWO WEEK For someone who already experiences dental anxiety, this experience was genuinely distressing

Since I wasn't returning home for several weeks, I needed help right away. Our resort, the Waiohai Beach Club, referred me to Dr. Shimabukuro, and I'm so glad they did. Even though the office was fully booked on a Friday morning, Skye--Dr. Shimabukuro's daughter and dental hygienist-- kindly told me they would make every effort to fit me in. After a few follow-up calls, they managed to schedule me that same day and quickly repaired the issue. The experience was outstanding from start to finish. The office itself is beautiful--custom built to resemble a home, yet designed as a professional and welcoming dental practice. It's truly a family-run office, with Dr. Shimabukuro, his daughter (Hygenist) and son (also a dentists), his wife (the business manager), and their wonderful team all contributing to a warm, friendly atmosphere. The treatment was quick, effective, and reasonably priced. If this practice were in my hometown, I would switch to them immediately. I can't recommend Dr. Shimabukuro and his team highly enough. Side Note: As of this time, they don't have a web site. Don't let that deter you. Skye shared that they are in the process of modernizing.

Dr. Ileana Carreno was able to connect both crowns to ensure they won't break again which is reassuring because i'm missing a tooth on that side and i'm not ready to receive an implant until next year :) the color of the crowns is perfect, i can hardly tell they are not my real teeth :) ive also received cleanings here as well. all of the staff are really nice and personable. i couldn't find a holistic dentist on island, but i feel this office is very conscious and listens to my concerns regarding unnecessary use of chemicals. they also don't use mercury in office. i always leave with a smile on my face and feeling great overall :) thank you
