I came here for some take-out lunch to take with me to Crescent beach. This is hidden gem!! The interior of the restaurant is decorated with beautiful cherry blossom trees and Polaroid pictures of their guests! It's super cute and fascinating to look at. The lunch special I ordered was you choice of chef special roll, a side dish (tempura, basic maki rolls, edamame, etc) and a bowl of miso soup. All of this for $23!! What a huge amount of food I got. I could've easily shared the lunch special with someone else too. I ordered the salmon mountain roll and omg it was to die for!! So delicious and so fresh. Highly recommend this roll it was such a great mix of flavours and with salmon on top! They had my order ready in 15 mins and packed up with utensils ready for me to head to the beach. Love the food, we drive here from America every other week only thing is I find it really I uncomfortable that some of the servers we observe wear gloves when cleaning tables and pick up dishes and then they touch our food, plates and utensils I just find it really gross. We asked about the gloves and it was "for her protection" and we asked her more about it and she says she never changes gloves and just washes her hands with the gloves on??!? How does that make sense. I understand you want to be safe but still you shouldn't be touching customers food and plates with with other customers dirty germs. If you're that serious about germs maybe wash your hands more often and not wear gloves? read more

A friend took me there for my first time a few years ago. This place is a family favorite as well as friends favorite. I have had the pleasure of introducing quite a few people to Hanaya. The restaurant is quaint and pretty. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The food is wonderful. I personally have tried many of their dishes and a favorite and unique combo is their seared rolls. Servings are generous and filled with wonderful flavors. All our items shows up very well made, elegantly boxed up considering its delivery. Rolls were well made, sashimi was fresh. Biggest pet peeve with sushi is not properly cooked rice, loose rolls that fall apart and bad knife work on the sashimi but Hanaya passed with flying colors. Double Spicy Tuna Roll: Nice and tightly rolled spicy tuna rill topped with fried tempura bits and a spicy mayo. A+ Quite a Combo: This was a great deal for what you pay. Come with Deluxe dynamite roll, jumbo California roll and jumbo jam roll. Again all nice and tightly rolled, fresh ingredients and rolls are big. Great deal for $16 Chopped Scallop Roll: Basic roll with chopped scallop, good ratio of scallop to sauce, not too watery and did not taste or smell fishy. Appetizer Sashimi 5pc: Consists of 3pc tuna and 2 pcs wild salmon. Pieces were nice and thick, knife work on point, fatty, buttery and tasted very fresh. Our order of two chopped scallop cones got m mixed up with two chopped scallop nigiri but they fixed that and we offered to still pay for the nigiri, they declined and said it was their mistake. Everything was very good. Definitely worth eating at this establishment, the decor is very nice too. Photos of customers cover the wall but done tastefully all in the same frame so it looks nice and not cluttered. Want to know how it feels to eat sushi under a cherry blossom tree? Hanaya can give you a glimpse of that feeling with their cute restaurant that has permanent (fake) cherry blossom trees in full bloom scattered all around. We sat in a booth and all around us were cherry blossoms and framed photos of customers neatly organized and saturating the walls and ceilings of the restaurant - really cute! My boyfriend and I both ordered from the lunch bento menu. They allowed me to substitute the dynamite rolls for salmon maki rolls for an extra fee of $1.20. The food arrived within 15 minutes during this weekend lunch time. The tempura batter was light and fresh. The sushi nigiri I had was a good portion and the sashimi was fresh. The spring rolls were nothing special but came out ultra hot. My boyfriend ordered a bento box with beef teriyaki and it came with a heaping helping of meat and rice. The beef was tender and was flavoured well but the rice was a little soggy. All in all, friendly and efficient service and decent japanese food from our first experience. We'll definitely want to come again! Plenty of free parking in the lot as well. read more

The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food came out really fast. We ordered shrimp tempura, tako sunomono, inari nigiri, tobiko nigiri, jumbo cali roll, and deluxe dynamite roll. My husband didnt really like the deluxe dynamite roll-said it was just stuffed with different types of tempura and had no crab meat (but we're not sure if this was specified on the menu). Hanaya Japanese Restaurant is my go-to when I'm craving delicious Japanese food. They have an extensive menu and the only challenge is what to order first. I'm a fussy eater and they have something for everyone. I really appreciate the fact that you can further customize your order (my daughter doesn't like avocado & as they make their items fresh - they will omit the avocado). Myself, I love their teriyaki chicken and noodles but I'm not a fan of the broccoli or sprouts (in general) - and voila - they customize it. The food is hot and tasty. They accept all forms of payment. The service is excellent. I really can't say enough about how fresh their food is - sometimes it's really hard to fine an establishment with consistency and Hanaya is consistent. Their portions are generous which makes for great value (My chicken terikayi for example was enough for 2 meals). I'd be amiss if I didn't mention their veggie spring rolls - very tasty (definitely can't stop at 2 or 3) and they aren't greasy or oily to the touch which is something I find difficult to get at other establishments. read more

Really well decorated on the inside with pictures of previous customer on the wall. Its a small place where you can get a quick bite to eat !! I got some chicken teriyaki, house salad and sashimi. Everything was okay, nothing stood out to me as really outstanding kind. The house salad was avocado slices on the side, with Mandarin orange slices and house dressing on top of the lettuce. The dressing was watery and a small pool of water underneath the salad. I mean for the price, it's bearable. The chicken teriyaki seemed like it was reheated and didn't seem fresh. Usually, the skin of the chicken would be crispier but it was okay. The sashimi was right up around 7/10. Ordered on the weekend. Place must have been busy as the phone line took several calls to get through. Spent over $40, and it was okay nothing earth shattering. Ordered Tempura Shrimp: 6 pieces extremely under cooked. The tempura was pale and soggy. We just live across the street so it wasn't a pick-up delay changing the food's texture. The chicken teriyaki was tasty. We had 2 sushi selections: the awesome roll which was really tasty and the Philadelphia roll which was also good if you like cream cheese. I'm not a fan of Miso soup but my husband said it wasn't that great. I might try more sushi but the tempura killed that experience for me. read more

I got takeout the other night a few crunch, dyna, cali rolls, salmon and tuna sashimis, deluxe tempura, takoyaki, ebi mayo skewer, chicken kaarage, dinner combos, etc. for my party. Crunch rolls were very hard for some reason we noted. The sashimi was ok, tthe lukewarm takoyaki wasn't the best, the sauce just exploded in my mouth with few octo bits seen, ebi mayo skewer was hard to chew and frankly nasty. I couldn't understand why, I've order a few of the above on occasians as a dine-in therefore I trusted them with the takeout of a few friends over but why? The real star that night was the tempura that gave two of my party food poisoning the following night from the oil they've said to have regurgitate along with the rest of the dinner in a restless night all thanks to my brilliant takeout order. One by one, I visit the mediocre "sushi" places masquerading as "Japanese restos" in Greater Vancouver. One by one, I shake my head and ask "WHY?" I got a few rolls and a bento box for dinner here (split among myself and two little kiddos). The beef teriyaki was typically over sauced, tempura slightly too oily (although not double fried like other lazy places), and rolls were cheaped out on (slivers of avo in the cali roll). There isn't going to be a diamond in the rough with these random "sushi" places and my stomach will continue to feel the effects. This is hands down the best sushi restaurant I have been to, and I have been to likely over 50 of them. If I moved away, I would travel to this place. I have brought people here from all over, and everyone has agreed that it is indeed - the best sushi they have had. The staff are attentive and friendly. They always greet you and say goodbye when you leave. It doesn't matter if you come in late or early, or what day of the week. The decor is very nice. The seats are a *little* uncomfortable, but I will suffer through that. The prices are reasonable for what you receive. The food is always prepared beautifully and is always consistent. I know when I order something, it will be the same every time. Well, I shouldn't say that - the taste just gets better, or it is plated differently. Know another sign of a good Japanese restaurant? Japanese people work there. And the only thing that I can say poorly about this place, is they now play Top 40 music. I hate top 40. Please go back to playing your Japanese music! read more

All of the rolls were great, not tiny, fish super fresh. Not a big fan of the summer roll wrapped in soy paper. Just a textural thing, and a bit too sweet, but that's my taste. this is a great little place in south surrey. definitely one of the better places I've been to in this area. some of the more common rolls have yams in it which I was very surprised about...but the flavour was still great. My fiancé and I had been trying to find a good sushi restaurant since we had moved to the South Surrey area and decided on trying Hanaya mainly because we were already nearby doing errands but also because the reviews online looked promising. Our decision was a total fail. Unfortunately this turned out to be the worst sushi experience my fiancé and I have ever had. The place is absolutely adorable and well decorated. It's quaint and cozy so when we walked in we were very hopeful. It was busy so all the tables were full except one awkwardly placed table for two that was piled with menus and extra dishes etc. The staff were friendly and said they would clear it off for us. That was about the extent of the pleasantness of our experience. After we were seated the service was glacial. It took absolutely forever to even be greeted by a server. Then the food took ages and came out very sporadically - I know that this is usually typical for sushi but I'm talking VERY sporadically, so much so that we would finish one item and sit and wait ages for another item to appear. My agedashi tofu took so long to come out that despite how slowly everything else came out we had already finished with it and thought they'd actually forgot about the tofu and it wasn't coming. It finally did but I almost wish it hadn't as we were so incredibly beyond ready to leave by that point. Our sushi was not good, it did not taste fresh and the seaweed was so chewy I could barely eat any of my rolls. Also the avocado was mainly brown so I ended up just trying to pick it all out. The agedashi tofu was awful, it was very soggy and the batter turned into a weird thick, sticky, chewy "goop". My fiancé and I weren't able to finish what we'd ordered and getting the bill was of course another challenge. We checked out Hanaya last year (before I was on Yelp) so this review is based on our experience from a little while ago. To be fair maybe things have improved, however what we experienced was really not good and we won't be back :( read more
