I was determined to get a reservation for this bar considering it's one of the best bars in North America that I even put a reminder on my phone when reservations were released. Honestly, I couldn't find the place at all. In fact I had to call my friend to see where it was. It's hidden inside a hotel and there's construction going around so it was definitely hard to find and walk through especially with heels on. Luckily we had a reservation because there were plenty of people waiting for seating! The man directed us downstairs to the actual speakeasy. What a super cool neat spot! It was quite dim, but we of course got the best seat in the house because of our party size. The music was top 40 which was an interesting touch considering the ambience of this place, but I wasn't complaining. Onto the drinks. I got the infamous - Peanut Butter & Jelly 100000/5 - I honestly think this is the drink that put them on the charts! The different flavors coming together within the drink and the little sandwich. The 'peanut butter & jelly' sandwich cookie was made from white chocolate and jam. I was honestly thoroughly impressed. I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't think it was going to be THIS good! Cookies n cream 5/5 - I'd still give this a 5/5 because it was also a great cocktail, but not as great as the peanut butter & jelly. I really wanted to like this place a lot more. It's not a hard to find speakeasy, located in the lobby of a hotel. My highlights were the welcome of every one of their team as you walk in and the goodbye you get. I also liked that they gave you towel to wipe your hands. The drinks were a bit lackluster. They sat us at the bar in front of the mixologist so we expected to get drinks mixed right in front of us but instead we got them poured out of containers where they had already been pre-batched. We stood in line for hours to finally get into Handshake Speakeasy because of all the hype surrounding it. Honestly, while it was nice to experience it once and see what everyone talks about, I personally felt it was overrated. I've definitely been to better speakeasies. The atmosphere was extremely loud, the service was average at best, and the drinks were just okay. Some of them looked interesting and creative, but overall they were very alcohol forward and not particularly balanced or memorable to me. Would I go again? Probably not. It was more of a one-and-done experience. That being said, if you're curious because of the reputation and rankings, it may still be worth trying once to experience it for yourself. Honestly, I totally understand the hype! You definitely need to make a reservation because it gets booked up QUICK. Reservations open 2 weeks in advance so make it as soon as they open! I didn't realize this, but Handshake is in the lobby of a hotel. Check-in was smooth. There was a hostess that greeted us at the hotel entrance and we were escorted inside to our table. The ambiance was very dark and moody to resemble how it felt during the prohibition era. We had 2 servers and both were so fun and playful! On to the drinks. They were delish! I ordered the Thai-inspired drink and my friend ordered the olive oil martini. Both were great and totally inspired me to make more savory cocktails! Now something to note...they serve you a bowl of trailmix when you sit down. There are roasted grasshoppers in this trailmix! It was certainly a shocker, so just be aware of that as you're munching. Handshake Speakeasy is worth the hype! I managed to snag a Friday night reservation in the basement room. The interior was dimly lit and moody, and the staff would yell a welcome every time patrons entered the space. They also did the same once people started leaving. For my first drink, I chose the Mexi-Thai. Handshake is known for their clarified cocktails and I was shocked by how complex the flavors were in this clear beverage. It was almost savory with makrut lime coconut, tomato, and basil oil. For my second drink, I chose the Banana Split. This one was much sweeter with rum, banana, and a blend of sherries. It came topped with a chocolate lego filled with banana ganache, which was insanely decadent and tasty. Our reservation was limited to 90 minutes, which was enough time for me. This bar is the 2nd top bar in the world for a reason. The bar is small, dark, but cozy somehow LOL. We showed up during the week and got lucky that they took us in without a reservation. We had to wait a little, but it worked out. When we walked in all the bartenders greeted us as well as some of the guests. As it was very dim inside I had issues reading the menu. I ordered the drink with lychee (can't remember the name) and the pina colada. I can't pick a favorite between the both of these, but both were good in their own way. The lychee was sweet, but refreshing while the pina colada was a "clarified" but still tasted like a normal Pina colada. What I mean by clarified is that all the drinks are more clear looking. I guess that has to do with the bartenders being more innovative molecular mixology. They provide light snacks and have a 90 min limit. We didn't have to worry about the 90 min as we should up an hour before closing. Since it was my bday our server hooked it up with "shots", but turned out to be champagne lol. I thought this was a really cool bar and would definitely go back. My brother and I had reservations and arrived on time, we had to wait for a bit to be taken down to the bar upon our arrival. When you walk inside the bar, the staff shouts a greeting to you as you enter a dimly lit, small, but vibey bar. We ordered a couple of drinks and were provided complimentary spiced nuts with toasted crickets which were good. My first drink (don't recall the name) was not good, I did not send it back, but our server saw me screw my face up at the drink after my first sip and offered to get me something else, I replaced it with a White Russian which was delicious. My White Russian had this beautiful and large piece of ice in it, had it been taken out, there would not have been that much actual drink in my glass, but I get it, it's for aesthetics. My brother also did not like his first drink, but he drank it and then got something different for his second drink and that he loved. The entire process, from lining up in a hotel lobby, to being led down dingy steps to sitting on a tiny toad stool..there are so many fabulous cocktail bars in CDMX, do not be upset if you could not snag a reservation here, you are doing your self a favor. This was, far and away, the best bar I've ever been to. It's hidden by the hotel entrance, and is an adventure in itself finding the spot. We got extremely lucky and managed walk in with a party of 4, split up into two tables of 2. The drinks were amazing; my favorites were the cookies and cream and the salt and pepper. I made a reservation here right as they opened 2 weeks in advance. When we got there, we had to wait in line to be let in for about 10 minutes, so make sure to arrive early. Currently distinguished as the #2 rated bar in the world (January 2026), expectations were high. It's great to get a reservation, but once reservations open, the spots are taken almost immediately. You can do walk ins and, if people don't show up, the walk ins are given those seats, but you may be waiting for some time, and you are given a one got know for walk ins to drink. We were about to get a reservation so, with that done 90 minutes of time inside. Obviously expectations are high, but can those expectations me match the reality of the drinks? In this case, yes. First, the service, impeccable. You are walked in to your seat from the outside, water is brought and the baby is explained. And, when drinks are brought, each drink is explained in detail from ingredients to the thought process behind the drink. The flavors? Amazing. So much goes in to each drink, and you can really taste the nuisances in each digital. From the forward notes, to middle notes and backend flavors, it's really like drinking art but with so much flavor. You really can't go wrong with any cocktail at Handshake. After a few trips to Mexico City and not being able to visit Handshake, I was finally able to check out this acclaimed bar not once but twice. I planned ahead and made two separate reservations, one in the basement and one on the main floor. The menus are slightly different with speciality cocktails that are unique for each space. The OG cocktails are the same however which include the staple drinks that they're famous for. Out of all the drinks I tried my favorites had to be the Mexi Thai with coconut milk, tomato, makrut lime and basil oil and the Matcha Yuzu! All their drinks are unique and feel so special! What I didn't expect was how friendly and lively the space would be! The bartenders all greet you with a bienvenido when someone arrives and hasta leaves when someone leaves. On the main floor this is especially fun as the space is one large rectangle vs the basement which is more intimate. Everyone was so friendly and dancing to the music. The bartenders and staff looked like they were having a ton of fun as well! We were the last party to leave during our time slot and were trying to take a group picture in front of the bar when they invited us behind the bar to take a picture with all the bartenders and stuff. Hard to see why this has been getting top speakeasy when I feel I've been to better... Pretty easy to find - it's in a hotel and there is sure to be a super long line waiting, so make sure you check in with one of the waitstaff especially if you haven't booked a reservation. Although our group did not book ahead, we got there right as they opened and only had to wait about 30 min to get seated - but it was also a Monday so maybe that had something to do with it... Aside from the entrance being anticlimactic compared to the bars I have been to, I think the drinks were quite delicious. I got the Earl Grey and the Once Upon in Oaxaca. The first one was honestly my favorite. It was such a refreshing drink that was a really fun take on Earl Grey tea. I really liked the lemongrass straw as well. Drinking out of the straw vs drinking the drink directly made a huge difference in flavor, which I thought was particularly unique. The Once Upon in Oaxaca was slightly smoky and definitely a more liquor forward drink. Perfect for a second cocktail. I would have liked it to be just a tad more smoky with a thicker mouthfeel. Came on a Tuesday night around 8:15 PM with no reservation. After an hour waiting, we were able to get in due to some cancellations. I say it's worth the wait! But reservations are highly recommended weeks in advance, maybe even months. You get an hour total once inside, last call when you're 30 minutes in. We tried a few drinks, no food since we weren't hungry. They gave a complimentary mixed nuts. I had the mini Espresso Martini (one of the best i've had), mini Mezcal Negroni (smooth and bold) , Matcha + Yuzu (I wish i had more) and Hojicha Tea Champagne (non-alcoholic and so refreshing). You can only make reservations 2 weeks before the date so you need to time this perfectly in order to get a spot. The entrance is tucked away in a entrance for a hotel. By the way the hotel has great priced espresso martinis at their bar upstairs. Go have drinks there before your reservation. Did I stay up until 2am to get a reservation at HandShake? Yes. Would I do it again? Definitely. We wanted to visit since it was on the World's 50 Best Bars List. Sometimes I am wary of the "lists" and feel like it's warranted. In the case of HandShake, it was not. While the "welcome" was a little over the top, it was still fun. We were the first seating of the night and were seating at the bar versus a table. It was so fun! They start you off with hot towels and tell you about the bar. It reminded me a little bit of our experience with bars in Seoul and Tokyo. Given a mix of snacks (that includes crickets!), we ordered our first round. I actually don't drink due to health reasons, but my partner does. Thankfully, HandShake had several mocktail options but they actually made an off-menu one for me after I described to them what I liked. I wasn't going to order another one but they gave me a sample of the chamomile tea champagne and it was not what I expected and was absolutely delicious so I ordered that as well. My husband researched about Handshake Speakeasy being ranked the #1 bar in the world. I couldn't get reservations last minute, so we rolled the dice with a walk-in. We got to Handshake Speakeasy around 7:15pm. So much for it being a secret. We found the black door with the "13" on it but saw a person with an iPad outside the door. We checked in with her and asked about availability. They were able to accommodate us, so we lucked out with a walk-in! They even sat us at a cozy, romantic corner at the back of the bar. Loved the chill hip hop they played so I was definitely vibing with the place. Service was excellent. The cocktails were made fast, which was much appreciated since we had to be out of there in 30 minutes to make a dinner reservation. The servers were friendly and actually all looked like they could be bartenders. We ordered the 2 most popular cocktails off the menu: Once Upon a Time in Oaxaca and Banana Manhattan. Very difficult to get in without a reservation, we were lucky and had some cancellations with rainy weather and got in after waiting about 45 min on a Saturday The ambience was nice, cool speakeasy vibes through a fire escape door. The setting was moody and intimate, albeit the music was a bit loud The drinks were probably the most disappointing part of the entire experience. About 300-400 pesos per drink, but most of the ones we got were just not that tasty - the mushroom maple old fashioned tasted like Tennessee honey with a hint of maple syrup, and one of the other drinks we got had a strangely medicinal taste to it. The only drink we liked was the saffron drink. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here 20 mins before the bar opened to snag a seat because we didn't have reservations and there was already a line that was 15 ppl deep. Fortunately we only had to wait about 45 mins to get inside. For drinks, we got the Mini espresso martini, matcha yuzu, tea champagne (non alcoholic), and olive oil gimlit. All were delicious and the espresso martini came in such a cute small glass. There were also assorted nuts that were complimentary. I couldn't have had a better experience at this bar; it exceeded all expectations! It is the #1 bar in the world! It truly is. I encourage you all to Google it for confirmation. That fact alone was the primary reason I wanted to go during my visit to Mexico City. There were four people total, and we were all like little kids in a candy store. We knew we wanted to try every single cocktail on their menu, and we did just that! I was very proud of us, actually! I am normally a tequila drinker and almost 40 years old, so I was a little nervous about mixing alcohols, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I was willing to gamble the hangover the next day! Glad to announce that none of us were hungover, which just proved to us that these were all QUALITY, PREMIUM cocktails. The staff went above and beyond, and even came over to offer us cocktails that were not on the menu. They had us use cool gadgets along with our cocktails, so it was also a form of entertainment that the staff incorporated with fancy cocktails, ensuring we never got bored. We were all so blown away, and some of the fan favorite cocktails were: - Piña Colada: A clear, non-creamy version of the classic. - Peanut Butter Jelly (Off-Menu): Served with a miniature peanut butter and jelly sandwich. - Once Upon in Oaxaca: A dramatic presentation involving smoke and a flaming fuzz ball. - The Butter Mushroom Old Fashion: A unique drink with literal mushrooms floating on top. I can't close this review without mentioning that the mixed nuts that they bring everyone for free when bringing out the menus have fried crickets in them, and although our party was scared to try it, it was actually really good! I would buy a bag to take home with me if they offered it! If you can score a reservation, which can be challenging, I strongly recommend putting this at the top of your list for a Mexico City visit. read more

Fantastic service from the time you enter and everyone cheers your welcome from the time you exit and they cheers again. The place is dimly lit with modern decor and definite speak easy vibes. The staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about everything they serve. The drinks...are incredible. No matter what you order, you're sure to be pleased. Coming to handshake was definitely an experience! We didn't make a reservation but got in line for a walk-in table about 20mins before they opened and got a spot. The staff is incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly and they make sure to curate an amazing experience for their guests. The atmosphere is beautiful and the cocktails are truly unique. It's definitely a bit pricey but worth it if you want an experience. Coming from NYC, the speakeasy aspect felt a bit messy. The door is rather unassuming but there's staff outside immediately directing you but also taking away some of the mystique of a speakeasy. Nevertheless a great time!!! read more
