Jules bar is advertised as a hidden speakeasy in Polanco that is located underneath a taqueria. The bar is tourist friendly and cocktails are reasonably priced. Come early as there is usually a line before entering the bar. Atmosphere: to enter into the bar, you have to go downstairs through a refrigerator. In contrast to the bright colors of the taqueria upstairs, Jules was adorned with leathered walls, studded ceilings, and skeletons as table centerpieces. While trendy, it did come off as a little cheesy. Nonetheless, decor did reflect the vibe it was going for. There was limited seating, so if you have a large party would recommend going there early if you have a big party. Later in the night, there is a DJ who plays techno/dance music tends to draw in large crowds of people. Brings in a mixed crowd. Service: Service at the beginning of the night was good, although servers were less attentive as the night got later and more people were entering the bar. Cocktails: The bar offers a good variety of drinks and cocktails--which I can see why people would want to go back to Jules again. My group of friends and I tried about 8 different cocktails and the only one I enjoyed was the Low Key. The Low Key is comparable to a whiskey soul with mezcal garnished with tamarind candy. I did not care much for the other drinks, as some of them were overly sugary. read more

Late night small place to meet up with friends or find a dark hideaway from the street scene. You'll find this spot inside the cantina and toward the back through a refrigerator door that's bouncer will be at. If you look halfway tidy he will let you in. Downstairs is great music and a couple of small areas with a DJ table in the middle. Early hours 8-10 pm have light dance music in the background and no one live DJ or band but May on some nights. Drinks are good and creative on a list. Go check it out. read more

This place is very small. Went during jazz week (which required a $10 USD cover charge) and was a bit disappointed. I thought the point of a reservation was to ensure a table was available, but it was standing room only. Also the sound for the jazz band wasn't great. Couldn't really hear the music unless you were right in front. Had 1 dismal drink and left. Wouldn't recommend this place unless you're fine standing all night and enjoy beinh packed in like a can of sardines. read more

I will begin, this place is not that hard to find, especially if you have looked on Yelp prior to going. Drink prices are about average for the neighborhood, which is higher than than normal in CDMX. Nice drinks, I like the Mezcal centric drinks. Nice vibe, polite wait staff. Music is strange, but tolerable. Cool little speakeasy! It's inside of a restaurant, you have to partially enter the kitchen and then a bouncer opens the freezer like door. Once your inside, walk down a few steps and there it is...a whole new world! The concept was cool, a nice social scene down there, but a little too claustrophobic. Jules Basement is a beautiful speakeasy underneath a taquería in Polanco. It's legitimately hard to find--we did a full loop around the block in the rain before figuring out where it was hiding--which is unusual for speakeasies I've been to in the U.S. The bar is super decked out, with snazzy modern flourishes and a black and white color scheme. The walls are upholstered with seamed leather, the ceilings studded with grayscale pyramids like little geometric stalactites. There are big white skull sculptures under the glass tables. We went on a Saturday night around nine and were able to walk in and get a table without hassle, as long as we were willing to share once the bar got busier. It filled up over the next few hours, and we did end up sitting with a couple of strangers for a while--a very nice couple from New York. There didn't seem to be many Mexicans in this bar. We mostly heard people speaking English with American accents--there were probably more people from L.A. than from Mexico City. Jules Basement, with its cheap craft cocktails and cool Polanco speakeasy setting, seemed to be made for American hipster tourists. Enclosed in this trendy space, we might as well have been in the West Village, or downtown L.A., except that the drinks were all like $8 to $10 U.S. dollars. Service was excellent. We just sat and ordered and drank--never had to go to the bar or even try particularly hard to grab a server's attention. My only complaint is that it was too dark to read the menu without using our bright-ass phone lights, but that was trivial enough. We ended up staying for four rounds. These were our sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth drinks of the day, and I'm going to blame the alcohol and the Spanish language menus for my inability to remember the exact eight cocktails we ordered. I do know we stuck with the signature cocktails (Jules' Basement has a huge menu, with pages of Prohibition Era and classic cocktails in addition to the fifteen or so signature options, plus of course, the all-encompassing "Mixologist Choice"). My best guess: we got the A La Altura Del Corazón, the Lipstick Kahlo, the Rojo Bikino, the Roy Olmstead, the November Night, the Camilo XXI, the Terracotta Earth, the Elegante Del Caribe. I won't even get into all the ingredients, but every cocktail was delicious, interesting and well made. I remember one of the drinks with apple (either the A La Altura Del Corazón or the Elegante Del Caribe) being one of the best sweet cocktails I'd had in recent memory. I also loved one that was super vinegary (perhaps the Roy Olmstead?). The four or five stirred on-the-rocks cocktails were smooth and boozy and beautifully made, with deft balanced mixtures of alcohol and things like cinnamon and chili and genmaicha bitters. We had a great time at Jules' Basement and would recommend it if you're looking to have some stellar craft cocktails. It's a cool place, and if you're a tourist, chances are good that it's within walking distance of your hotel. The hardest part may just be finding your way in. I loved this place! Really cool hidden spot. Music is good - deep house/some 80s. Bartenders were amazing to us!! The only downside is that it was super dark inside and was hard to see anything. But still one of my favorite spots in CDMX. I'll def be back. read more

Cool spot we stumbled upon with some effort after having dinner at nearby Pujol. In true speakeasy fashion it was a bit difficult to find but worth the end result. It's an intimate bar, there are a few bar stools at the bar and then some tables scattered throughout with space for a live band in the front. On a Tuesday night we had no difficulty securing a table for a party of 6. Around 10 pm a jazz band began playing, they were pretty good and even took requests! I read the reviews and was skeptical about going. I had made reservations anyways and I am so glad that I decided to go! To each their own. It is confusing to find the place because I was looking for a taco restaurant & couldn't find it. I asked a waiter for help & it turned out I was at the right spot. It's located across the street from Porter steak, & inside a restaurant called Surtidora Don Batiz. The entrance is a refrigerator door. The signature cocktails are amazing! My friends & i tried 9 cocktails off the list. I can understand why people said this place is expensive FOR Mexico City. We are from Chicago so it was cheap for us. We went on a Wednesday night & it was crowded but not as bad as expected. I mean it's a speakeasy so it's small. What did people expect!? The Blues live music was an added bonus. Such a cool place going through the walk-in refer down to a blacked out, mood lit basement packed with a super sophisticated crowd. Got lucky and sat at the bar with a great view of the live jazz. I love jazz brass so it was our good fortune that the live music had jazz vocals and a trumpet. The bartenders didn't speak English and my Espanol is non-existent so we told them in a few words what we liked and they made some fantastic drinks. Went to this place too many times when we were in CDMX. It's centrally located in my Polanco and has one of the best cocktail menus I've ever seen. The cocktail menu is seasonal, so there's not much use in me describing the drinks, but rest assured that you'll find something classic, some riffs on the classics, and something you've never heard of. We had a number of each, and it was an experience. I've been talking about the menu, but I should mention the menu...the actual, physical menu. It was informative and artistic and showed what your drink was actually gonna look like - so cool. This place is the place to stop by if you're looking for a pre dinner drink or a post dinner night cap. So much fun. read more

I made a reservation for a party of two on Friday evening, and it was not very obvious how to get in (probably a good feature for a speakeasy). The interior of the bar is fairly club-ish in vibe and in mood, which is a little strange for a place that is meant to be secretive (at least in theory). Really cool underground bar in DF. You walk in a taco joint, through the freezer door, and down the stairs to find a dark and mysterious cocktail bar. Very bad experience tonight. My friend got the wrong cocktail (not the one she ordered) so she complain and got another one. Then when we got the check they charged us for both the cocktails even though they took the first one back because it was wrong. They would not correct the check so we had to pay for that wrong drink we never had. Then when we paid they took our cards and when they charged it they added 15% tip without asking us or putting it on the check. Would definitely not recommend going there. read more

Jules is located inside a restaurant where, yes indeed, you walk in through a freezer door. The decor is alright, a couple of stools at the bar, some highboys and a couple of (skull) tables scattered around. We went on a Thursday at 9pm expecting it to be more full. Vibe wasnt what I expected and neither were drinks or music. They did have a DJ but the music just did not match the decor or "vibe" they are going for. Only stayed for 2 drinks. If you are in the area and want to give it a try, go for it but I wouldnt go out of my way. We experience a lot of better mixology focused cocktail bars throughout the city. read more

To me, a bar's "coolness" factor is ruined when it's overtly trying to BE cool, which is precisely the sense I had when I visited this place. Besides the self-aggrandizing phoneyness, the surlyness of the employees was a big turn-off for my date and me. With so many great bars in this great city, I see no reason to ever return. The location is inside of surtidora don batiz restaurant in their basement. Meh, staff was nice but I was underwhelmed. The drinks were pretty basic, the bar was very dark. No candles on the tables so we had to use our flashlights. The music was loud. The decor was dark and simple. Nothing that caught my eye. Overall felt like a normal bar. I've been to speakeasys before and the bartenders typically give an overview of the menu, that didn't happen. He was very polite but no descriptions he just took our orders. As for the drinks, they were nice and refreshing but nothing theatrical about them. No smoke,no cool glasses, just regular schmegular. If I was eating upstairs I'd go to the basement for a drink but I wouldn't go out of my way like we did. Save your uber fare. read more
