This is the light fixture that is up on a 12 foot ceiling with staircase underneath and he managed to do it perfectly!!!
Mage M.

Andrew and Matt are skilled, thoughtful and extremely professional contractors. We had to have our shower floor tile redone as well as an impossible (to us) to reach light fixture replaced and he also fixed the front steps to our building. They took the time to go over our design plan and helped guide us to choosing a beautiful tile that would function best. Andrew takes the time to show you every step of what he's doing and he explains all of the options clearly. He is fearless yet safe when it comes to very tall ladders and his care for our house was really above and beyond. He covered every area with protection and left the workspace spotless every time. On top of all of that, Andrew and Matt are kind and funny and make you comfortable instantly. I know looking for a contractor in New York City is one of the most harrowing tasks to set out on but these guys make it easy. We will use them for all of our future projects and I recommend them to everyone! Below is a photo of the light fixture and I will post tile photos on Monday after he grouts.

I hired NJH to repair damage to a restored antique mahogany staircase in my house…read more The newel post at the end of a section of the banister had separated from the handrail and was loosed at the base. That made this section of the banister wobbly, unsafe and prone to further damage. Prior and now failed repairs with mastic and nails were an eyesore and calling for further restoration work. Ben with Kellam's supervision closely conferred with me how to do the best structural and cosmetic restoration of the banister. They dismantled the newel post from the handrail and the mounting of the post to the staircase frame, and removed old nails and mastic from the post rails joint all without damage. To remove the post, they had to remove stapled carpeting and a stair tread that they replaced without damage at the end of the job. They very securely remounted the newel post with corner backets under the stair tread and long bolts into its base covered with matching round plugs. Having so securely remounted the post and restoring the post to rail mortise and tendon, the handrail was solidly secured without the further use of mastic, nails or screws. With a few touchups to old wood putty, they then managed to remove obvious evidence of prior repairs. As this section of handrail may need a restoration replacement to match the quality of the other staircase handrails, their method of reconnection rail to the post will allow for less problematic handrail replacement without damage.

They put a great amount of effort into excellent communication, being on time and above all, making sure the job was done right. He is booked months out on larger residential and commercial projects, so if he fits you in consider yourself lucky. Master craftsmen like Alexander are busy for a reason, and the vast majority do not take on small side projects. Take a quick glance at his work on his website and you'll see what I mean.  I loved working with Alexander. He is professional and has a lifetime of experience. This was particularly important for our project in an old building, with warped, uneven walls that were difficult to drill into. Many people told us it would not be possible to do this project, but Alexander had the skillset to make it happen. He was able to adapt on the fly and work very quickly while maintaining the quality and look we were hoping for. He is a wizard, and even took apart one of our cabinets and redesigned it upside down on the fly so it would open properly under the heavy oak desktop. I was able to watch and learn alongside him. It's like watching an artist at work. As a bonus, he has great stories about old townhouses in Brooklyn if you like architecture and history.   I highly recommend this local business. It's been several months since we completed the project. We've added a dual-screen computer plus books and other heavy objects to the desk and it is solid. The cabinets are working perfectly. I can't thank Alexander enough!

Michael was quick to respond, stopped by to give me an estimate/clearly assess the situation, and ultimately gave me two options: make the entire cover over or do this smaller fix. I also received quotes from 3 other companies and they only gave me the first option. He was reliable and I am so happy with the work. He's detail oriented and professional. I will definitely call him again if I need work done in my apartment!

Setting up an appointment was easy, price was reasonable and Michael was quick and friendly and efficient, and even gave me some pointers for how to hang things on the walls of our old pre-war apt. Between the pleasantness of dealing with him and solid work and great samples on their site, we hired Michael to design a built-in shelving unit for our living room, and simply couldn't be happier with the results. The fit is perfect and the look amazing - feel like they look much more expensive and luxurious than what they cost, both in expense as well as time/effort on our part, as Michael was so easy to communicate with. Most people might think of the phrases 'handyman' and 'craftsman' as mutually exclusive, but Michael and his company represent that rare and wonderful exception that run the gamut--equally adept at handling basic repairs as well as large-scale undertakings. You would be fortunate to hire them for any work around your home, large or small.
