Before photo. Right side shutter looks warped.
    Debbie H.

We contacted Bill for the replacement of the right side window shutter, which is warped and needs to be replaced. This is the 3rd time we used Handy Craftsman's service. The left side window shutter was rebuilt by Bill many years ago and still looks solid today. Bill arrives on time (actually early). We went to Ganahl Lumber in Costa Mesa to purchase needed materials based on Bill's list so he didn't need to waste any time on the commute. He was able to do the prep work (removal, measurements, setting up equipment etc) while we were out getting materials. We ask for the new right shutter to match the existing shutter and that's exactly what Bill delivered. Each board needs to be precisely cut, bevelled, primed on all ends followed by two coats of exterior paint. We bought the materials and pay Bill for the labor by hour. Bill also helped us adjust our French door to minimize friction opening/closing and fixed our side gate which had a loose jam/hinge. We love his meticulous quality work and his integrity as a professional. We learn over the past 16 years managing properties that it is worthwhile paying for quality work using quality materials. We appreciate Bill's service and would highly recommend him to anyone who appreciates high quality work that lasts.

    New Fireplace Mantel installed!

Bill did an outstanding job installing our fireplace mantel (see photo)! Out of the box, a few areas needed some fine‑tuning, he immediately understood the vision and had a solution to make it all fit like a glove. He came out on just a week's notice, was straightforward from start to finish in timing and cost, and his skill really showed in the final result. We appreciated how communicative he was throughout the process, making everything seamless. It was also a pleasure chatting with him and learning about the other services he offers-- true craftsman. Highly recommend Bill for anyone looking for quality work and a great experience.

repaired mirror stand holding the very heavy mirror

I hired Bill to repair a broken arm of an antique mirror base, and he handled it with precision and clear expertise in delicate/antique woodwork. Thanks so much for all the hard work, it's so appreciated. Would definitely hire again!

I messaged Bill last week to find someone who could create a media storage space for the odd area under our low fireplace mantle. I drew up a rough digital design and within a couple of days, we had locked a day and time and a reasonable flat fee for the project and materials. Yesterday, he arrived very promptly (wearing a mask which I appreciated!) at 8:30am and we took about 15 minutes to go over measurements and final plans. He then went to a local lumber yard to pick up the wood and came back with some beautiful birch plywood and poplar. He set up shop next to my garage (and was very flexible working around a couple of other folks who were completing misc house projects). By mid afternoon, he was finished! I popped in periodically to see progress and he made extra effort to custom cut the poplar beams and sand things to perfection. At Bill's recommendation, I ended up applying a satin varnish myself that night which really let the wood shine naturally. The "drawer" pulls out on felt pads to protect the floors and we can now store all our miscellaneous electronics inside! Thank you, Bill!

Kevin is the real deal, a furniture restorer, a craftsman and an artist. See BEFORE and AFTER…read morepictures. Bottom line: I don't believe anyone else in San Diego could do what he did. DETAILS: We had a disaster with our large, built-in bathroom vanity. Shampoo had spilled and wasn't discovered for months, causing extensive damage to 5 components: a large supporting vertical piece, the supporting bottom piece running the entire width of the vanity, a cabinet door, a drawer cover, and the drawer. I called numerous woodworkers, handymen, specializing in wood, cabinet makers, and cabinet companies. Most suggested cutting out pieces, patch-ups and coverups. Those that had a well-known reputation were concerned about the vanity's structural integrity. One suggested adding another bottom support, which would have completely changed the look and feel. An extremely reputable cabinet company told us they wouldn't even try because they weren't confident that they could remove the supporting vertical piece. THEN WE FOUND KEVIN. He didn't patch it. He didn't coverup damage. He didn't change the design. He restored it. In my opinion, Kevin is a true craftsman and artist, and probably a one-and-only. He told me his grandfather taught him the trade beginning when he was a young boy. His skill, patience, and attention to detail are extraordinary. Look at the photos. They tell the story. You will see what Kevin was up against. and that he gave us back our disaster as good as when we had it custom built almost 20 years ago (and better than prior to the damage).

However it turned out even uglier in my opinion. He said if you looked at it from straight on it would not be noticeable, which is true, but from other angles it is a glaring eyesore. He did not tell me it would be beautiful only from one angle and I am very disappointed. So frankly I would not hire him for a repair. This is a reply to your offer. Thank you for your offer to redo the work, but when I expressed concerns after your initial repair, that would have been the time to discuss alternative approaches. At the time you left me with that was just the way it was because of the way light is refracted. I tried to ignore it but it leaps out at you every time you walk by. It is much worse than it was before and 4 times larger. I hired another company to come out and see what they could do. Although their repair still isn't perfect, it is significantly less noticeable. At this point, I don't feel confident that another attempt would achieve the results I would like.

I'm the type of person who is very specific about what I want and I did my homework. I got four different bids for this project, and C2C was the clear winner. Their quote was completely itemized--which I appreciated--and ended up being well under every other retail bid I received. Two people really made the difference: Mary and Bolo. Mary is a literal pro when it comes to the insurance side of things. She worked tirelessly on the supplements to ensure we maximized our RCV payout from our insurance. She caught things the adjuster missed and helped us get the settlement we actually needed to do the job right. Bolo, the project manager, was extremely responsive and reasonable throughout the entire build. Whenever a technical issue came up--even complex stuff like electrical circuit stability or specific plumbing heights--he was there to talk it through and get it handled. One thing I will say for people considering them: you need to be the kind of homeowner who has the capacity to stay on top of the work. If you know exactly what you want and you're willing to stay involved in the day-to-day details, C2C is an incredible solution. It's a partnership, and because I stayed engaged, we were able to hit a level of quality that usually costs twice as much. The house looks amazing (see the photos of the Blue Thunder Quartzite and the Jade tile!). They were fair, they were fast, and most importantly, they were responsive. Highly recommend if you want high-end results without the "luxury markup" of other firms.
