I just visited Spirited Gourmet today to learn more about a program they participate in called "Too…read moreGood to Go." I was interested in this program as it is geared toward two noble goals: reducing food waste; and addressing food insecurity. I downloaded the app and purchased a "surprise package" online that had a retail value of $13.00 and cost me $4.27. The gentleman behind the food counter knew immediately what I meant when I mentioned the program and gave me my surprise bag containing two baguettes from Iggy's as well as a one pound of fresh, gluten free gnocchi (I had indicated that I was gluten free in the app). All items were within their freshness dates and the gnocchi were excellent. The employee who assisted me was both extremely courteous and knowledgeable about the program. I really want to commend both the Spirited Gourmet for participating in Too Good to Go as well as the program itself. Besides wine, they also have other alcohol (sake, beer), a ton of cheeses, crackers, everything to assemble your own charcuterie board, including yuzu olive oil! I live near San Francisco, and the Boston I remember from years ago had tiny selections of bulk-production wine. Not this place. The center of the store is completely filled with wine racks, with well-chosen assortments. There are strong collections of Italian, Chilean, Argentinian, New Zealand, French and California wines, and many of my favorites are here. Hundreds of wines, pinot grigios, sauvignon blancs and chardonnays, many nice sparkling wines, many varied reds. Going over to the liquor section, there are excellent tequilas, whiskeys and whiskys, dark rums, gins, and a large and varied vodka section. I only glanced at the beer and cigar sections, but what I saw also seemed surprisingly nice. The best part is, after asking for a premium and wonderful tequila I have never found on the right coast, the proprietor asked me to write it down so he could order some. If you don't find your favorite thing here, just ask, as the family that owns the store really wants to make their customers happy. He checked inventory, put stuff aside for me...take a minute and ask for what you want, they will help. It's easy to pop off I-90 and stop, the parking is good, and it's easy to jump back on the f-way. Really, check it out.

Just had an interesting experience with Cambridge Wine & Spirits, a shop I'd been frequenting for…read moreyears. Recently, since I've become disabled, I'd called in a delivery order with no problem -- John had always been helpful -- until he left the store. Then I'd order through Kevin, also very helpful. Today, when I ordered, two people who didn't speak English tried to help me but had trouble taking the order. Suddenly, when I asked to speak to someone who could better understand me, Edward came on the line and said -- suddenly-- that the manager had decided not to take the order. When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told he was "tied up". Bottom line -- used to be friendly and helpful. Not anymore. Too bad.
