Small custard stand on the side of a busy road between Meadeville and Conneaut. I guess it could be loud on a day with lots of traffic but it didn't feel loud on the Saturday we were there. Old school vibe with local high schoolers working the counter and limited bench-only seating (several folks were eating their custard in the back of a pickup truck in the parking lot). They have a nice big menu with custard, shakes, and sundaes. Prices are very reasonable. My wife, daughter, and I all enjoyed our custard. I'd say the flavors were on the plain side but the toppings were layered on very generously. We would definitely stop back next time we are in town. read more

Stopped in after coming to Meadville for the Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon festival. Unfortunately the winds were too high and so we couldn't watch hot air balloons, but custard was a nice way to recover before we made the trek back to Pittsburgh. We came in on a Friday evening and even though there was a bit of a line, it moved fast! We got a raspberry truffle to share and added some brownie on top! Custard was creamy, smooth and divine! Only complaint was that we got almost as much chocolate and raspberry sauce as we did custard and would've liked for the sauces to be toned down a bit so that we could taste and enjoy more of the rich custard. Hands down one of the best custards I've ever had. I ordered the black raspberry sundae, which is served on vanilla custard. The custard was just right in terms of sweetness and creamy yet light. I also tried the banana flavor custard and it was just perfect; it almost tasted like banana pudding. The only thing missing were some wafers. The sauces they use on their sundaes are pretty runny and a little sweet, so I'd consider just getting the custard. Hank's only accepts cash and there's plenty of parking. The lines outside can get pretty long, but the line goes pretty quick. Customers in the line are encouraged to distance 6 ft apart. Servers wear face masks, and the store opens from 12-9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. read more

Man o man what a treat! A great family friend is visiting from back East and he was ever so kind enough to bring us back some Hanks Frozen Custard. This stuff is so darn good if someone ever asks you to join them on a trip to Pennsylvania you better go ASAP just so you can try Hanks Custard. I was lucky enough to try the coveted Black Raspberry Frozen Custard and it was pretty much unlike any frozen treat I have ever had. The texture was perfection. The flavor of the black raspberries tasted as if you were to just eat a berry off the vine. It was thick, rich in flavor, yet creamy, yet icy. Again it was perfect. He also brought us some Sherberts and they were by far the best Sherberts I have ever had. Pennsylvania can make a mean sherberts I tell ya. The Black Cherry Sherbert was by far my favorite but the Red Raspberry and Lime followed up in a close second. Hanks Frozen Custard has many years of history as the shop dates back to 1952! I read online that they still use the original equipment purchased way back then to make the custard they do today. They also close for the winter as they head to Florida for warmer weather. I'm not up there much, but when I am my family makes it a point to stop here as many times as possible! I mean, what's an Eddie's hot dog without Hanks Frozen Custard? It's like horse and carriage, meant to be together! First of all this is some of the best tasting, smoothest frozen custard you will ever have, let alone ice cream! They serve chocolate, vanilla, and a flavor of the day. The flavor of the day is always superb and there's nothing better than a 2 scoop cone with the flavor of the day paired with Vanilla or Chocolate! The service at Hanks is awesome. These gals KNOW service! They are super friendly and can hold 5 cones in one hand, and make change with the other. I have never seen or have even heard of one of them dropping a cone or even a penny at checkout! Hanks looks like it is in what used to be a little old farmhouse. If you look closely through the windows, you'll see that the frozen custard machines look like something out of Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory! The rumor is they are from the late 1800's and that they are the only one of their kind in the world! Now, I'm not sure if that's 100% true, but it adds to the magic! I've been going to Hanks for about 30 years now, and I can't get enough of this place. When I lived in Pittsburgh, we'd go up all of the time since we had cabins near Conneaut Lake. Most of the family would usually get triple scoops and it didn't really matter what the scoop of the day was because Hanks is the place to be. They have a cool contest where they try to see a license plate for all 50 states in their parking lot and most years they make it! The only problem (for me) is that they're not open in the winter, which was sad when we'd drive up to hunt. read more

Hank's wasn't at Conneaut back in prehistoric times. It is NOW! The extended family, including a 93 year old aunt, all piled into the car (yep, adults crammed into even the wayback!) and acted like kids again deciding which flavors we each wanted and in what form. I got black cherry sherbert and that heavenly vanilla custard that you watch snake ever so slowly out of the gleaming chrome German-imported magic machines. It looks and tastes exactly as it did when I used to go to New Brighton to the original Hank's. Smooth, creamy vanilla heaven. The black cherry sherbert was very good, but I made the mistke of tasting my husband's tangerine sherbert....WHAM!, a blast of sweet, tart and tangy deliciousness! The tangerine was so good, that my cousin's husband and I both ordered quarts to go....and then made whipped cream VODKA/tangerine sherbert drinks during the Steelers game. Mmmmmm.
