A friend who misses The Bread Butler, maybe even more than I, told me that there was an excellent…read moresourdough bread being baked by Anicca Bakery in Troy and sold at the Honest Weight Co-op. I was at the Co-op the next day. A variety of their breads are located in a shelf display across the aisle from all the other breads. I saw sandwich rolls, French baguettes, plain sourdough, three seeds sourdough, whole wheat sourdough, plain challah, everything topped challah, and a couple of variations that I don't recall. Some of the loaves are also available in half-loaf sizes. I purchased a loaf of 3 Seed Sourdough ($8.69) and a loaf of Everything topped Challah ($7.29). Both are excellent in their own right. The 3 seeds on the sourdough are organic dry roasted pumpkin, organic dry roasted sunflower, and organic golden flax seeds. Anicca makes a point of stating that they make every attempt to obtain all their ingredients within 200 miles of the Troy bakery. The sourdough has a nice chewy crust and a decent sour flavor. The challah has a softer crust than the sourdough, just a bit of sweetness and a slightly lighter colored crumb. The challah is also double bagged for some reason. The loaf is placed in a plastic bag before it is placed in the outer paper bag. Maybe that was to protect the everything topping? If you visit their web page https://aniccabakery.com/ you will learn that you can order online and pickup your order at Alias Coffee Shop in Troy. You may also notice that their web page does not mention all the varieties of bread that I saw at the Co-op and shows a more limited production schedule. Maybe their web page is just not up to date. Another issue I ran into was knowing whether the bread was fresh. Glancing at the information on the label of my two choices, I saw that the sourdough was labeled as "Date Baked on10/29/25" (GREAT! That was today), while the challah was labeled as "Date Baked 10/30/25." WAIT!!! How can that be? 10/30/25 is not until TOMORROW!!! I checked several other packages and found that all the packages of challah were labeled with tomorrow's date. As an aside, does that mean I wouldn't be able to eat the challah until tomorrow? LOL Or better yet, if I eat it today does that mean the carbs don't exist yet? Still, LOL. In any event, a Co-op employee noticed my confusion and insisted on informing management while wondering if this meant the sourdough could have actually been sitting on the shelf since 10/28/25. Today or not, but probably tomorrow also, both breads were excellent. I'm looking forward to trying a whole wheat sourdough.

When we walked in, we noticed that the food bar was not totally open yet. Some of the food was out, but not all of it. My husband politely asked an employee who was placing food into the trays when it would all be ready. She literally looked at my husband like he was an idiot (not exaggerating) with epic double stink eyes and said.."Well I'm putting it out now!" He asked again when it would all be out because we wanted to come back. She curtly replied, "AS SOON AS I'M DONE!" It was so rude and an embarrassment for such a great place. I also like their hot food section. Picked up some meatloaf and it is fantastic especially for the price. The sushi is fresh and almost as good as the restaurants. The layout is nice and easy to find things. The produce section is extensive and probably the closest that comes to HEB. Depending in what I need this is a great place. And there are more in the area since they took over all the closed ShopRite stores.

So it was not surprising to me that Price Chopper/Market 32 grabbed the defunct Shop Rites in the area. But having so many in one area takes away from all of them. I've got 2 Market 32's competing for my business on Western Avenue - neither one is fully staffed as it is. This new Market 32 at 1730 Central Avenue is competing with a nearby Price Chopper at 1892 Central Avenue. I'd be willing to bet these stores consolidate into one at some point in the near future. Sorry, having all these stores is not the way to get my business. Here's some things to consider addressing if you want that: - None of these stores have "baskets for easy shopping," only carts. If I only want a few items, I'd like a basket, not a cart. - Competitive prices - the few loss leaders here were okay and good bargains, otherwise not. - How about low-sodium deli product options, like some other local grocery store chains provide? - Label the produce - Absolutely nothing except lettuce was labeled in any way in the greens section. I hope you can tell chard, collards, and kale apart. There were no signs under the products, and at least the chard had no tags on them identifying them by item or 4-digit code. More on that below. - Have someone at the seafood counter. By the way, the salmon fillets were dry and cracked. - Have bagels that actually look like bagels, not mis-shapen, flat, and burnt excuses for bagels. Some of them looked more like the 5 pound weights I put on my barbell. For a grocery store chain that has been known for good quality bagels, these were abysmal. - Have user-friendly checkout kiosks. These get upset if you put your empty grocery bag on the counter before scanning items. For items you need to look up, instead of getting a convenient keypad, you get a list of 6 to 8 likely items. If what you have isn't on the list, you MIGHT get to a digital keypad to enter words or a code. Now about that chard: The scanner/electric eye did not recognize the item, so I got a pop-up list of things like spinach and kale, but no chard. When I tapped on the button for not listed, I got a "please wait" message, and then nothing happened. I eventually had to call for an attendant (who had to serve 2 people ahead of me, by the way), who had to use an authorized bypass to bring up a greens menu which actually included chard. This was not a good experience at all. There's several other Market 32s in the area I'd rather visit. Honestly, though, I'd actually drive the 45 minutes to the next closest Shop Rite than to go back to this store Shop-Rite-Turned-Market-32.

This is one of the…read morenewest stores in the Capital Region that I know of, so the store is cleaner, brighter (but in an appealing, comfortable way), and more modern, even if the store overall has a very similar layout to others. One example of 'modern' is the self checkout kiosks that are not only faster than any other I've used at other Market 32 stores, but recognises veggies and fruits in the scale. For instance, when I place the tomatoes on the scale, the kiosk comes up with a list of choices to click from, such as vine-ripened tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, and plum tomatoes. I also find their regular weekly discounts for a whole variety of items appealing, although this is not unique to this particular store. The staff I've interacted with have so far been overall friendly and helpful. They have their own parking lot, so parking has not been an issue. They also tend to keep a good stock level. All in all, I hope they keep up the good work and stay open for a long time.

They have their own parking lot and we have come close to not finding a parking space here, but there's a constant flow of people coming and going, so we've never actually not found parking.

Much of the time the store is very crowded, there can be a long wait at checkout, and it is a pain to get to from the Albany/Colonie Center area. Still, the prices warrant the gas and even the toll for the Thruway. My suggestion for their developers would be to build another store in the area around Colonie Center/Northway Mall area, perhaps in the old Barnes and Nobles building. With their prices you would probably see a line on Wolf Road waiting to get into the parking lot!!!!
