Selection and price - this Asian supermarket called Asian Supermarket has en edge on these two points over competitors. If you're like me and can't live without a variety of Asian goodies like tea and crackers, your jaw is bound to drop at the sights as you walk in. Sure, the aisles are only wide enough for one person to walk through straight on, but that's a small concession for what's on offer here. Their produce section is surprisingly extensive, there's even a seafood section, and it looks like they've finally revamped the hot food next to the front entrance. The staff at checkout here are always quick and efficient, and I'm grateful they're such a decent Asian supermarket in the Capital District to complement the wonderful Kim's and Jang Tuh. They have their own parking lot and we have come close to not finding a parking space here, but there's a constant flow of people coming and going, so we've never actually not found parking. read more

So much variety and produce you can't find at your local chain supermarket, and at very affordable prices! They have a huge selection of gluten free and vegan cooking condiments, seasoning, and sauces as well. That whole aisle is pretty overwhelming but so much fun to explore. There are many brands offered so you're not stuck paying a high price because it's the only one like at Price Chopper or Hannaford. If you're trying to recreate a favorite Asian dish, I recommend finding a recipe for the sauce before shopping. I like to check Tiffy Cooks and Wei Red House Spice websites and recipes to make sauces from scratch and find allergy friendly substitutions. They have the easiest and best recipes for so many dishes! Once you have the basic ingredients typically used you can make anything from your pantry instead of buying a jar of syrupy premade sauce. The experience has been consistently concerning. On more than one occasion, I've come across food items that were already past their expiration date still sitting on the shelves. The overall cleanliness of the store also raises some serious concern! It's really disappointing because a good Asian grocery store is hard to find in the area. I hope the management takes these issues seriously and improves their quality control and sanitation standards. Customers deserve better, especially when it comes to food safety. read more

I was going to rate this 3 stars due to the fact that very little, if anything, in the produce chillers was properly marked. I am not kidding, I stood there and sorted out part of the display just because it was so badly off. They had curry leaves in a slot marked "chive", the chives were in a slot for moringa (drumstick tree) leaves, and the moringa was in a slot marked "curry leaves". Other stuff was clearly NOT what it was labeled but I had no idea what it was plus, really, not my job to sort out your displays. Secondly nobody in there seemed to know anything about any of their products. I found some packages labeled "aromatic ginger" that I was just SURE were galangal. But when I asked I got several confused looks (a lot of the workers are Hispanic and don't have enough knowledge of Asian foodstuffs OR the English language to be able to answer questions that have to span multiple language barriers - any one of a number of Asian languages, English, and Spanish) and then one "I dunno, it's "aromatic ginger" I guess?" Then I was told it was definitely not galangal. I bought it anyway because if it WAS ginger, at least it was an unusual form of ginger I'd never seen before. So here's why the get an extra star above and beyond what I felt like giving them. Firstly the store is fairly well organized and the fish area smells of FRESH, not stinky rotten, fish. I would buy fish there and that is the ONLY Asian market I have ever been in in over 40 years that I would say that about. The scallops looked great. I will go back for scallops one of these days. And secondly, that "aromatic ginger"? DEFINITELY galangal, once I got it home, popped it open, and did some double double checking. You would not believe how hard it is to find fresh galangal. Well if you're reading this maybe you would. I grow ginger indoors and have wanted to try galangal for some time. Now I can. Assuming this will sprout - it was wrapped in plastic and was pretty damp when I opened it (but not moldy so should be good to sprout). This is Kaempferia galanga aka black galangal, one of the 4 plants called galangal. I'm still looking for greater galangal (Alpinia galanga). So I give them back a star, even if their produce section is insanely jumbled. read more

It's not aesthetically pleasing... boxes all over, not neat, displays are not attractive... like ppl rummaged through and no one bother to restock. Prices are ok, some are lower than the city, some are more expensive... not sure why. Like I said, but it gets you what you need to make your basic Asian meal. read more

This is by far the most superior Asian and international supermarket in Albany, New York. I promise you that! I love coming here and trying the different Lays from different countries. They have all the ingredients or premade snacks, or Ramen and candies. You could think of the produce here is insane. Definitely worth a stop. read more

UPDATE: the hot foods area, to the right as you come in, is closed and apparently will be for a while. A guy in the butcher department told me the people who ran it had quit because they "didn't get their government benefits" and wouldn't come back till they got them. Not sure what that could be or why it necessitated quitting but too bad. I always got one of the trays of roast chicken and a tub of tendon in crispy chin oil when available. Otherwise, this remains the place to go for your Asian goods as long as you can put up with the confusing organization of the market. Last visit I needed some concentrate to make pho and assumed it would be in with the instant noodles but it's one aisle over, next to the little Mesri sauce containers. Also I see I was quite critical in my last review of their COVID protection early in the pandemic; I feel quite differently now and feel they're doing a better job than most. Has gone downhill, and I'm not sure why. The cashiers all seem to be extremely bad tempered lately, and the customer service at the fish counter is almost non-existent. I choked on a piece of plastic from a bun in the bakery area to the point where I had to fish it out from my throat with pliers, and I'm scared to buy one of my favourite snacks in case it happens again. The aisles are stuffed with boxes and yet things seem to constantly be out of stock, and the fish tanks are beyond filthy when they were sparkling clean when we first started shopping there. The atmosphere is more like a place where you do a speed run for the things you know you need, rather than take your time and browse for things you'd like to try. A real shame. read more

Due to the corona virus, aka covid-19, the Asian Market is doing their part to keep us safe and healthy during our infrequent shopping jaunts. There are times when you must shop at a specialty store. In consideration of staff and customers, there are several precautions being taken to protect us all. Only 15 customers (total customers allowed in at a time), gloves and masks are distributed. Check out is also spaced to protect everyone. I thank you for your caution and social distancing. Many vegetables at this market cannot be gotten at American stores. This place has nice produce. It has many items that my local store does not carry regularly, such as king oyster and shiitake mushrooms, baby bok choy and purple sweet potatoes. Whole Foods sometimes carries those items but prices here are much better. The selection and price for dried mushrooms is much better than what I find on Amazon or have bought at Whole Foods. The price and selection for various types of noodles is excellent and much better than local chain stores. For example, rice noodles were $2 for 2# here, compared to $4 for 1# at my local store. As others have mentioned, aisles are narrow and I had to turn around 3 times because an employee stocking shelves was blocking the aisle. The place was cold but I had a coat on and only stayed about 45 minutes. To me, these are minor inconvenience and I will continue to shop here. I was very organized and had a list so hopefully the items that I stocked up on will last 3 to 6 months. I shopped 45 minutes, spent $100, and my cart was overflowing- 3 very full bags of groceries when packed. read more

I swore I had reviewed this place before but apparently not. I remember once exploring Boston's Chinatown during the Big Dig (2003) and stumbling into a place that sold Asian groceries. I bought a bottle of sesame oil as a souvenir as I had never seen it before. How things have changed... This place is nice. However, before it came there were several other, smaller places that I enjoyed shopping at. A couple have struggled to survive and are gone. I suppose that is how it goes. This place does a lot of things right though: there are tons of options in the frozen and grocery sections; they carry unusual and exotic produce that I have never seen before; and cannot purchase elsewhere, and their prices seem reasonable. They struggle in a couple of areas too: they have slim aisles that frequently are crowded with boxes; their staff are sometimes unpleasant and unhelpful (and don't always speak English); their seafood section smells pretty gross; and their parking lot and entrances are a game just to safely get in and parked without getting hit or running over a person who jumped out of nowhere. I come here for the novelty of it. But, if the items are available elsewhere I will usually choose to get them somewhere else. read more

Oh bright and shiny Asian Supermarket of 2010, what has become of you? There was a time when I thought that the Asian Supermarket was so great that it might put the smaller ethnic markets out of business. Fortunately, that didn't happen. Competition upped the ante, and I'm thrilled by all the choices we have in the region. But over the years, the Asian Supermarket has lost a lot of its sparkle. The building hasn't been kept up, quality control is down, and the last time I was in they were out of a pretty basic item. Still, I have over 70 check-ins here, so it's not as if the place is terrible. It just hasn't been able to uphold its own high standards. I'm also now on the hunt for Korean sweet potato noodles that are actually made in Korea. The Asian Supermarket only stocks Korean noodles made in China. But I'm going to start branching out again to the smaller ethnic markets scattered around the region, and I have a promising lead. Maybe I"ll get lucky. read more

For me to review the Asian Supermarket relative to other Asian markets would be as if I were to try to mansplain feminism. I mean, I like this place, it's got an amazing variety of packaged goods most especially from China (for Indian stuff, try Parivar up the street), and enough fresh vegetables I couldn't identify that I suppose it's authentic, plus live crabs. I consider myself a supporter and a fellow traveler but I can't really objectively rate it because I am not living it. I can't really truly appreciate it for better or worse because I am a shallow dilettante when it comes to Asian cooking, and it took me over a half hour to find the dried black beans I came for, during which I put in a dozen items, only half of which I could really identify. (My favorite was the "Indispensible Condiment." Does that mean I can't do without it, or I can't dispense it? We'll find out!) What I will give this four stars for is the cultural experience, because I haven't found another place in Albany or the entire CRUST where I've felt so much like I was a visitor on a sort of exotic trip. (Yes, I am the kind of person when he goes abroad, goes to the grocery stores and such, to get immersed.) There's a modicum of English labeling, but who knows what it really says? Today I couldn't find a single employee who spoke English, and I obviously said 'Niihau' with the wrong intonation because I got looked at like the gringo that I am. (I finally got directed around the store by asking the delivery man, who spoke only Spanish, like a real American.) There was another shopper who became my good samaritan and helped me find my dried black beans finally, although she said I had been asking for "old dark shoes" earlier. So much for Rosetta Stone, eh? In any event, I strongly urge you to bring your kids here and have them try to get a treasure hunt list of ten items or so, it would be a great way of learning what it's like to be an immigrant and have to navigate for the basic needs in life without knowing the language, the customs, or even what the basic food ingredients are. I'm completely serious. The CRUST doesn't have enough real ethnic enclaves to serve this purpose, so you have to take these experiences where you can find them. Maybe that *is* like a feminism mansplainer, in that I'm being an annoying tourist in my own town here, but as long as I keep coming back and spending my money on bags of Indispensible Condiment I'm pretty sure the owners won't mind. read more

Yes for Asian groceries! When I first moved here, I was super nervous about not having my Asian nom needs met, but fear not! The cleverly named Asian Supermarket has alleviated some of my homesickness for snacks and noms. Below is a breakdown: Vegetables: lots of options of Asian veggies. They come in pretty big bags, and the price is really reasonable. Fruits: Never get fruits at an Asian supermarket. It's always not good for some reason. Or there's mold on the side you can't see. Except for the Korean pears. Those are okay. Meats: I don't really buy meats here, but they have a lot of prepackaged meats as well as fresh cut. They also have the more bizarre meats like tripe and livers. Seafood: If you've never been to an Asian seafood market, you might be a little squeamish. Depending on the season, there may be live turtles, frogs, or the like. They have crabs as well. If you want fresh fish or other seafood, they will kill it for you on point and scale the fish. Snacks: Lots of awesome frozen and non-frozen snacks! I always love checking out the new drinks and candies they ship in (green tea kit kats are yums). Recently, their boba ice cream bars have been shipping in consistently. Makes me a happy nommer. Though there are only 6 bars in a box, the short milky sweetness is quite worth the purchase. They also have a nice selection of ramen to try from, though I tend to steer towards the good brands. read more

I love shopping here. Prices for key things like produce, some meats, and shelf staples are actually really decent. Their hot food case is my favorite spot--my husband and I make it a point to try something different every time we do go. The only thing I want to address (that is not in the store's control) is to expect being stared at/have your picture taken or recorded by other patrons of the store. It's a thing I've come to be used to now although it really is irritating. I don't feel like I have any particular uniqueness to me other than being over weight, but it seems like if I visit 5 times in the month, 3 times I'll catch someone with their phone aimed in my direction visibly recording or taking photos and then hurriedly trying to cover up when they realize I've caught them. It's reached the point I'll pose when I see it just to really lay it on thick. The store it's self I do love and will continue to shop there because let's be honest, the pandemic isn't kind on the pocket and their prices for the quality is better than Walmart right now. But there's some atmospheric things that can make it a REALLY unpleasant experience when you're just wanting to do grocery shopping on a Thursday morning and there's a camera pointed in your direction as you're walking by lol. read more

The market is quite large and has a big assortment of groceries. Fresh and frozen seafood, vegetables and fruits, asian teas, rice, asian snacks/ spices/ sauces etc. There are two parking lots along the front and side of the building which are usually full. The one in the back is most of the times not too busy. The only negative I have to say is customer service is barely existent in there. We have been going to this supermarket ever since it opened a few years ago. It has so many products, it is easy to find what we need. The store can be pretty cold in the winter, and parking can get a little crazy at busy times, so I recommend parking in back to avoid the chaos. Also, the aisles are small and it can be very tight as far as navigating through the store. There is a large produce section with a lot of veggies you don't typically see in the average grocery store. You will easily see 5 types of bok choy. There is a seafood section and deli as well. We generally buy our staples for Asian meals here, from miso soup to chili paste to fresh miso. They do also have some Thai and Indian foods. The back of the store has kitchen items and large bags of rice. My kids love the pocky, jelly cups, roasted seaweed, and other candies. read more

Great market, that has most all of the items we seek. We've moved up from north Texas, where there were many wonderful Asian supermarkets nearby. This is the only one we've found near us here in upstate NY so far, and it's about an hour south of us, but since they've got the products and produce we shop for, it's great. There are three Asian market in Albany, one Korean and two Chinese. This one is the largest. Obviously it cannot compare with the Asian markets in NYC but it does the job. I do like their bakery, especially taro bun, dry pork bun and cha siu bun. They increased the price of hot food which is quite price given the quality. The staff at this store all have very bad attitude. I needed help with looking for one item, the staff yelled at me for asking questions. The cashier was rude and ignored my request while checking out. Another staff was restocking on the shelf, occupied the entire path and said i can not go through in a very unfriendly way. My friend and I came here for a couple of items after we stopped at Kim's Asian Market and had the most pleasant experience...and I walked out of here extremely anxious/upset. Kim's Asian Market was clean, polite, and truly made me feel great as I'm used to Queens having so many options. This Asian Supermarket has an extremely rude staff who boss you around, don't listen, and SCREAM at their customers! I can't remember the last time I experienced something so awful. While there may be some extra items, I will make sure to stick with Kim's and any other place I can find before returning here. I know there's a language barrier sometimes (I'm half Korean so I'm used to it) but this was horrible. Not only did my friend and I witness mistreatment, we witnessed it happening to others. I bought some mochi which turned out to be moldy (and no, it was not just coloring). Although it hadn't expired yet (still ~2 months left), I found that the expiration date was assuming that it was frozen. The problem is, the mochi wasn't frozen (and who knows how long it wasn't frozen for). So, if you ever plan on buying the mochi (or anything else), I would recommend checking the expiration dates and information on the packaging first. read more

So despite the sub par service and freezing environment (they never turn on the heat) I keep coming here religiously as they have almost all the SE Asian and Indian spices, sauces, snacks, tea, rice, fresh fish and homemade fish balls. They have every kind of sauce, chilli sauces, Asian mixes- do take the time to walk the isles. Besides picking up Asian ingredients, fresh produce and seafood- they have a cooked food bar and bakery- which I stop right before doing my groceries. I love their red bean buns (reminds me of home) and the Brooklyn-imported wife's biscuit (my favorite are the ones filled with lotus seed paste- pastry is delectable and is made with lard!). They also have fresh tofu and handmade noodles from a Brooklyn vendor. So despite their sub par service, I'll be back! P. S. This review is for the Harmonious Grand Tour bus that goes up and down from NYC to Albany and back. This bus is always packed! Be sure to board on the asian market stop instead of the one down central ave towards albany area or they will NOT have any seats left then forced to wait for the next bus which are usually an hour or 2 apart. This ONLY cost $25 round trip!! Way cheaper then Greyhound services. This bus service has been around for about 10 years now and went thru 2-3 different owners and name changes but can't go wrong with cheap travels! Either get dropped off in Midtown or Chinatown. Like most ethnic food markets, I feel like you have to lower your expectations just a smidge. Especially if you're going to compare it to your local Whole Foods or Hannaford supermarkets. This market has a great selection of Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, and Filipino ingredients. You just have to look carefully! Compared to the other Asian markets in the Capital, this store has the biggest selection. Lots of Asian produce, spices, beverages, baked goods, and Asian medicine (if you need that kinda thing). Most of the items looks fresh today. Wish I took time to look at their bakery. I love Hong Kong style baked goods. Went to get stuff to make Korean BBQ with my roommate and we were able to get everything here. There was a bit of a language barrier when we shopped here so be patient if you ask for help at this market. Parking is not the best here so snag a spot whenever you can! People can be aggressive drivers here. read more

Lots of products do NOT have expiration date on them. I just got a black-bone chicken（乌鸡）from them, which turned out to be rot. I can understand the overprice, same chicken is only about $5 in NYC and it is $10 here. But I do not understand the poor quality of the products. It's so sad we do not have more Asian markets in the capital area, but for your own health, stay away from this one (at least I will). read more

I kind of wish it was colder, because I'd be more apt to cook my own food right now. Which would mean, I'd be stocking up on lots of delicious ingredients from Asian Supermarket. While not as physically large as Fubonn or Uwyjimaya in the Portland area, this place holds its own, especially in a town that seems to dislike the idea of having solid "ethnic foods" sections in supermarkets. (Now, I propose that someone build a paneria or tortilleria or a MexiMart, and I'll call truce with Albany.) First, there's the token Asian "fast foods" section where you can buy ready-to-eat hot goods, that I'm going to have to hit up next time. There's a good-sized produce section with all of the exotic fruits and veg you could probably ever want. And then there are the aisles. There are probably only nine or ten actual grocery aisles (if that) to the store, but they are HUMONGOUS. They are so tall and so long that I wouldn't recommend going down them if you're claustrophobic. What was even more impressive was their selection of everything. I was so speechless when I saw the wall of hot sauces and chilis and other sauces that I had to sneak out my camera and take a photo. HUGE selection of juices, coconut products, oils, and other condiments. An entire two rows of obscure Asian candies and cookies (who doesn't LOVE that?). A small refrigerated and frozen section. A huge aisle full of noodles and ramen. A college student's dream? I think so! Oh, and there's an entire ROOM devoted to rice. And the fish section? Yeah, I bet little kids LOVE coming here, because they actually have a huge selection of LIVE fish in an aquarium-like setting. Love it. Love it!! They have such a large assortment of items, but the isles are so small that if you run into someone coming the opposite direction you have to turn around because there's no room to get around eachother. I love the fresh mochi and dango though! There's so much cool stuff and that's why I give it 3 stars. The smell walking in is horrible, but I understand because of the fish market. If you don't likenthe smell of fish, this isn't the place for you as it is a strong smell that goes through the building. The building itself isn't the cleanest, and staff aren't the friendliest either. I go rarely because of this. read more
