I walked into Hannaford expecting a quick, normal trip--grab a drink, pay, and leave. Nothing complicated. But somehow, that simple plan turned into one of the most unnecessarily frustrating shopping experiences I've had in a while. It wasn't the store layout, or the lines, or even the prices overall--it was the self-checkout situation that managed to mess up something as small as 88 cents and still leave a bad impression. So there I was at the self-checkout, scanning my items like usual. Everything seemed fine at first. The machine did its little beeps, the total popped up, and I paid without thinking much of it. But afterward, I noticed the total didn't match what I expected. At first I thought maybe I misread a price or grabbed the wrong item--but nope. After actually checking the receipt, there it was: an extra 88 cents that didn't make any sense. Now, 88 cents isn't life-changing money, obviously. But that's not really the point. It's the fact that the system--this supposedly efficient, modern, "convenient" self-checkout robot--managed to get something so basic wrong. And there's no easy way to question it in the moment unless you want to call someone over and hold up the whole line. So you either let it go or deal with the awkward process of proving a machine messed up. What makes it worse is how avoidable it feels. That 88 cents could've gone toward something else--like literally another drink. That's the annoying part. It's not just "oh well, small mistake." It's the fact that I walked out knowing I paid for something I didn't actually get, and that small difference could've added up to something tangible, even if it's just a second bottle or can. And honestly, these self-checkout systems are supposed to make things smoother, but moments like this do the opposite. Instead of speeding things up, they shift all the responsibility onto the customer while still being prone to errors. If a cashier made that mistake, at least there's a clear person to talk to. When it's a machine, it just feels like you're arguing with a wall. It also makes you wonder how often this kind of thing happens. If I noticed 88 cents, how many people don't notice? Those tiny amounts can add up over time, and it starts to feel less like a one-time glitch and more like a system that isn't as reliable as it should be. Even if it's unintentional, it's still frustrating from a customer perspective. In the end, it's not about the money--it's about the experience. A quick stop turned into irritation over something that shouldn't have happened in the first place. And yeah, it sticks with you more than it should, because it's such an easy thing to get right. I have been going to Hannaford in Middlebury, Vermont for years! I love everything about it. I have been a Hannaford to go customer since the pandemic, but recently, they hired a new manager in that department of Hannaford to go. In the past the workers were very pleasant and they made me feel like they were family ! It used to be an enjoyable experience, until Amanda took over. I have been a loyal customer for years, not liking anything about my transactions in the last month. Sad! read more

Love my local Hannaford! I could spend hours looking for things. My only complaint might be there's too many things to choose from.

Overall an excellent shopping center. Large aisles and plethora of products. A little overpriced compared to what I am used too.

This was the nicest Hannaford I've ever been in. I like the one in Glenville, NY, but the displays here were well done and thoughtful. The employees were friendly, the offerings were off the charts. read more

This grocery store is like a shining oasis in an otherwise blank desert that is Middlebury, VT. This grocery store is vast, clean, and has a hearty section of natural and healthy foods. I've had great service, and the prices aren't so bad. It's a lot bigger than the Shaw's -- after all, it's about twice the size, cleaner, with more light, and the prices were better, too! read more

Moron of the Year Awarded to the Employees of Hannafords in Middlebury My husband and I went into the Hannafords Liquor store to buy a small bottle of Vermont gin. We asked about the gins, then took one bottle to the counter. I'm 41 and my husband is 39. I was carrying my 4 year old. When my husband took out his ID and credit card, the woman at the counter asked to see both of our IDs in order to purchase the "tourist" bottle of gin. I didn't have mine, so she wouldn't let us buy it. Apparently in VT, you can ask for the ID of those with the buyer of the alcohol. Its not a law that you must see both IDs, but you can ask. So I guess, at around 11am, an obviously 40 year oldish couple with large child seemed threatening enough to this clerk that she decided she must ask, and then not sell us the gin. That or, she has not a single brain cell in her empty head, and decided she was going to exercise the little power she has in her sad unhappy life. I left the store and my husband went back to buy the gin, and they would still not sell it to him. They told him he'd have to go get my ID (which was at home). Keep in mind, that my husband is almost twice as old as you have to be to buy alcohol. He wasn't buying a case of anything. Just one small bottle of gin. He asked the store clerk, alcohol manager and store manager WHEN he'd be able to buy the alcohol. How long did he have to wait? Until the end of this clerk's shift? Until tomorrow? In one hour? WHEN? The staff at Hannafords wasn't able to answer him. This is the most moronic store we've ever been to. They made a stupid decision to decide to stop us from buying the gin to begin with, and then they didn't have the brain capacity to correct it. Absolute MORONS. I can't stress this enough. From the top down, this store is filled with some of the dumbest, hopeless, grabbing at the strings of any power type employees you're going to find anywhere. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Hannafords for any reason. read more

This isn't a review for the store (which is a standard grocery store) but a review for the seafood section. You're in luck if Carlos is working. He goes out of his way to help customers and always picks the best selections for us. If the item you want isn't available in the fresh display then he will walk you to where they have a frozen and comparable item. read more

While it's not a bad Hannaford's its not nearly as good as I was hoping for. It is large inside, but there were a lot of items missing that other Hannafords of this size always carry. So while this place is a serviceable grocery store it was lacking the speciality items that I have come to expect. read more

Go to Vermont every summer for 10 days to 3 months and live 35 minutes away from this Hannaford, was charged twice for my "DME BUTTER QTR 16OZ." Very annoying when I actively look for other savings only to be thwarted by being double charged. Will probably be back, but will check receipt carefully, before I leave. read more

Might I recommend the tide pods? They're a bit pricy but utterly delicious! Will definitely be returning as soon as I'm able!

I would have to agree with many reveiwers on here. The first department you walk into is the worst. The shelves are NEVER stocked and staff seems annoyed when you ask for something. The produce is always wilted, never fresh and very little organic options and NO LOCAL items. It's VT - support your farmers!!! The bulk section is never full, always out of something. I see carts laying aroud with product in it to go up. I would suggest changing the delivery times of your loads, perhaps have more staff on to stock at the appropriate times and get more training in Customer Service. No one says hello, looks at you, nothing. read more

This store has to be one of the worst supermarkets in Vermont. Actually both this Hannafords and Shaws in Middlebury are both lacking. Everytime I go into this store not ONE person will say hello to you until you reach the registers or ask if you need help. The only department that has something that may say hello is Seafood. Products are consistently out of date on the shelves. We have had to return meat several times due to the awful smell coming from the meat even before the sell by date. I was in the store a couple of weeks ago and saw fudge that had a sell by date of two days prior so I told the bakery manager. She told me "it doesn't matter, the fudge is still good and they don't have an expiration date until June 2016"... Well that's not what the package says. So, I return to the store a couple days later to pick up vegetables for dinner and for the heck of it decided to check on the same fudge and guess what? It still had the same dates on it! So, I called the bakery manager and told her the fudge still had the SAME date on it, not the date of June 2016 but at this point it had a sell by date of 4 days earlier at this point. She said there's no way... Ummm Okay, I was just in there. So she continued to try and argue with me which I finally said okay, have a nice day, never mind. I called back and talked to the assistant store manager and she said I watched her change those tags the other day as soon as you told her. I said well there are more that still have the same date as before. All she did was defend her bakery manager. This stores management is a total disaster. The new store manager Vic is rude as well when I spoke to him about another issue. He was very short with me and tried to get me off the phone as soon as possible. It is unfortunately one of only two grocery stores in town and neither are nice places to shop or businesses I want to give my money to. read more

It is better than the Middlebury Shaws, but it still really sucks. Sometimes it seems like the store has been ransacked by a hungry mob of people that left the shelves bare. They never have enough baggers, and when a bagger does bag my groceries they always try to shove everything into one bag. Many times those flimsy bags have broken on me. It seems like they try to sell a lot of rotten produce as well - be very careful when buying strawberries or lettuce that comes in plastic containers. read more

I always go to hannafords to do shopping since they first opened , liked the prices and the custe=omer service was always friendly, until today i went to the service window to put money on my boyfriends prepaid card and the girl wont let me said he had to do it ai explained to her i always went there and put it on for him. never had a problem she said she couldnt and she wasnt very friendly so i did my shopping and went back to the desk and the gentle men there did help me. gee if id stolen the card i wont be putting money on it plus I d never had a bad experence there like that ive shopped there for years i think they better interview their staff better if they want to keep their customers read more
