Tom's Creative Landscaping - Poor edging, merging with the lawn after one season

Tom's Creative Landscaping

Tom and is crew landscaped my whole backyard in 2005. This included removing old (except for a few…read moreshrubs that I wanted to save) and installing sod, trees, shrubs and a unlock patio. They did a great job in plus 90 degree heat. This year (6/2021) I had Tom and crew out again. This time to install a new tree, shrub, mulch, remove 4 bushes that save din 2005 (should have had them removed then) and to seed over an area that needed repair. Again, hot and humid, but the crew pushed forward and did another great job. When you are doing your due diligence I highly recommend calling Tom's Creative Landscaping of Sugar Grove to get quote. Tom is easy to work with and will help you achieve the landscaping you desire.

It involved a lot of planting, leveling…read moreof the yard, brick paver work and installing another drain that attached to our existing drain. We are completely satisfied with his work and the communication with Tom. He estimate was incredibly detailed and he listed individual items separately. We added things as it started and he was more then accomidating. Ironically, when Tom came out to give us an estimate I thought he looked familiar. Later that week I was shredding old statements and bills from the house and I found the old landscaping bill from 2002 after we did a 2nd story addition. It was from Tom. Completely by chance we ended up with the same landscaper 18 years later. We were happy back then and happy now. We just underwent another house remodel and a front porch addition and our yard was basically dirt. It looks so good- I highly recommend Tom.

My Elementary daughter lays better sod. Apparently they…read moreare in business due to large construction contracts, and their work is sub-par. They pushed recently repaired sprinkler heads into the ground laying topsoil. They messed up the grading to the drain in the yard, and laid up to 12" deep of topsoil in spots. So when it rains, you get a standing water sod waterbed - sinking in 6" when you walk. There was no care in the height of the topsoil, which they laid to the top of the curbing. The sod roots are above the curb and driveway. The cuts were horrible, leaving 6-8" gaps, and square edges were it should be round. See the pictures if you don't believe it. If I showed you the before pictures, you would be sick.

Schollmeyer Landscaping is awesome! We have done business with Cory and his team for the last 2-3…read moreyears and highly recommend them. They are prompt, courteous, the crew asks questions if they're not sure about pulling or removing something and reasonably priced! We couldn't be happier with the results...time and time again. Two thumbs up! We had large gravel horseshoe driveway and parking area re-done with colored stone. They did a great job, done properly. Looks great and has held up now for 1-1/2 yrs and counting... They added stone all around the barn and most recently had them do spring clean up to extensive country garden plantings all around the house and plantings around half dozen trees along the drive. Cory suggested not adding more mulch to the gardens but simply turn over the existing mulch they put down last year which looks fantastic. In the area of old growth pine trees lining one side of the house, they raked up and turned over the pine needles and edged along 30ft length to stop the grass from spreading.

Scheduling was easy, they got right to work. When there were issues, Shawn was in touch immediately and the issues were resolved often before we even realized they existed. The patio and retaining wall are gorgeous! The steps out to the yard, and the stoop from the house are a HUGE improvement over what we had before, and all done for a very reasonable price, especially since we did shop around. Needless to say, we love our new backyard and hubby even says he now has room for more grills! We have no complaints; the workmanship, value, and communication were all outstanding.

After living in my new construction house, my wife and I decided that it was finally time to get a…read morebackyard patio. All we saw was a bare backyard with a lot of green grass with some weeds. We did have some "wants" on our list which included a natural gas firepit, natural gas line for grill, seating for ~6-8 people, and enough room for entertain with some food, drinks, and a nice place to relax. From the start to the finish, Grant and Power was completely different than the other companies. Other locations just met you outside, what you wanted, and how big. Then we got a quote. However, when I contacted Grant and Powers, they started out with an email with some essential information like their insurance, a pamphlet and other information to get us started. We talked about what we were looking and then waited for our appointment Our appointment was different. Instead of going outside and talking about size... Gene sat us down to talk to us. He wanted to know what we wanted, what we were looking for and what we wanted to spend. We told him about how we were going to use the space and what we wanted and gave him our budget. Afterwards we talked about modern trends and what designs are in/out, how we wanted to place everything. Then off he went with the rest of the team to start designing it after a small down payment. He asked about budget and we talked about how much it might cost, but of course, the final bill could vary depending on the design. A few weeks later, we had another appointment where he showed us the design and it was amazing. They really sat down and listened to what we wanted because it looked amazing. The budget was completely out of our range.. granted, we knew our budget was on the low side of things, but they were willing to work with us to make this affordable. Finally, our day arrived. We got a call the night before that they were arriving in the morning to get started. During the process, the team were good...i would give them a 4.5/5 for a few minor things. They did talk to us a few times but I wish we were updated better. They were good about protecting our lawn even though some areas did suffer. Luckily (For us and them), our backyard had nothing out there. It was just bare land with green-ish grass. From start to finish, they were done in a week. We waited an extra day for another group of guys to show up to set up the firepit and show us how to use it. They were in and out fairly quickly. In the end, we got a beautiful patio. One section to entertain/eat. The other area is for the firepit and grill. Due to the design, they both feel separate from each other. We did find some minor damages that the team did not let me know or Gene. But he is going out of his way to making it right and I appreciate it. Ive had some neighbors stop by to marvel at the patio. Overall, if I were to ever move away, I would go back to this company to design a beautiful space again. I would completely recommend this company if you are looking for the same.

The tree was cut during that process, and there did not appear to be active oversight of the crew at that moment. My neighbors did not request that my tree was cut, as they were not even aware it was being cut. Roman did not come to us to speak with us or ask permission before the tree on our property was cut. After noticing the issue, I spoke directly with the foreman, Roman. During that conversation, I was given several different explanations for why the cutting was not a concern. What was most upsetting to me was not only that my tree was cut while work was being done on another property, but the way my concerns were handled afterward. The situation was repeatedly minimized and I was told things like it "would grow back" and that I "had more privacy elsewhere in the yard." His responses felt unprofessional, and it felt like my concerns were not taken seriously. Instead of feeling heard, I felt as though I shouldn't be as upset as I was. After I walked away, I was also told by my husband that Roman referenced a past situation involving a property line dispute and court involvement. I can't speak to that situation, but it added to my confusion about why it was brought up in relation to my concerns.
