Warning: it is 21+ and people smoke inside. There is a non-smoking room in the back though. My friend and I came here after a long day of driving and hiking in Death Valley and it hit the spot! The locals were all very friendly and welcomed us. The food was cooked to order so it was hot and crispy. We devoured the garlic fries and I wish I could eat them daily. The Beatty VFW came recommended by our hotel, at first we thought this is your #1 pick but we looked up them up saw the simple menu options, reviews, pictures and decided what the heck let's head on over. We walked in to be immediately greeted by the friendly bartender who said pull up a seat, we let her know we would like to grab a bite to eat. She said we could eat at the bar or there were a couple of tables below - we opted to find our way in the lower area. She gave us menus, letting us know that we would order dinner through her and then pick up our dinners when our name was called at the window - easy enough. We looked over the 'Chow' aka menu with the special of the night being Fish & Chips deciding on the Special of course for the hubby, I couldn't resist the Shrimp Scampi and we both ordered their amazing Wedge salads - BTW their croutons and bread made in house is TO DIE FOR!! We even ordered the next night to-go after a longgg hiking day in Death Valley grabbing the VFW Honey Pot pizza, wings and garlic parmesan bread - yummmyyy!! I have never eaten at a VFW before and it was so nice and welcoming and just felt great. We looked at all the options in the area and honestly the reviews really did get our attention. Then we asked the bartender at our hotel and he highly recommended the VFW and their steak sandwich. He said just go in and remember to sign the book. We did. We had a couple of beers and a couple of white wines. (Great prices after being in Vegas for a few days!!!) We had the Friday Fish and Chips and a burger as well as the wedge sandwich. First impression, this is a stinky bar. Thankfully we were told in advance that they have a non-smoking room. We ordered at the bar in the smoking room and the food was delivered to the non smoking room. Who knew there were still smoking restaurants out there... it didn't stop us. VFW had come highly recommended from locals. The jalapeños were delicious, they were a little greasy & lacked heat- but still, very tasty. The burger was excellent. Onion rings, perfectly fried in a fresh batter. The French dip did not come with an au jus, so that was kinda disappointing. I've been coming to this place every time I'm in Beatty for work. Since the pandemic, they've opened up more seating in the back which is great since it's mostly crowded. They have cheap beer and pretty delicious food. Mostly burgers and deep fried things, but everything Ive had has been great. Most recently I ordered the chicken tenders and I should have split them. Those two tenders were maybe 10 inches long. Definitely couldn't eat them by myself. read more

The best food we ate in the Death Valley area! We stopped in for dinner around 5:00 on a Sunday and were greeted warmly. The bar was full so we grabbed a high top table around the perimeter. The building itself looked like it had seen better days, but the restaurant and the bathroom were clean. It was pretty chilly so we did keep our coats on while we ate. We each got a beer, and had wings, a fried shrimp basket and a steak sandwich for which the total was $37, which I felt was very fair. Everything was great except my husband said his steak sandwich was "just ok". We stop here to eat once or twice a year when we drive to Tahoe and Reno. They have my husbands favorite Hamburger and I love the Caesar salad with sirloin steak. We get a kick out of the locals at the bar. One of them was telling a local woman as she was picking up her dinner to go that she should cook and not eat take out. Okay... who would have thought to pop into the VFW for a bite to eat? Well, thanks to Yelp and the fact that the "other place" I had been recommended to eat at was too busy to take my order, I was able to come on in and partake at this Beatty, NV hidden treasure. Walking in I was immediately welcomed by the waitress who was up to her eyeballs in customers and orders. It was obvious she ran a tight ship, and knew how to keep it running smooth. She informed me that they were at capacity, but as luck would have it, I had already called in my order. I had a few minutes to wait and I spent the time perusing the place... a local hangout where everyone knows your name. I am sure that you are only a stranger once in this place. Once I had my dinner and made it back to my room I was pleasantly surprised with the oversized serving of French Dip and Onion rings. The rings were a bit salty, but the flavoring allowed for eating them solo... no need for ketchup or other dipping sauce with these babies! The French dip itself had an abundance of meat, cheese, peppers and onions all cooked to perfection. The au juice was beautifully flavored and they gave more than enough in the order. It's definitely a place I would go back to. Next time I hope to saddle up into a chair and sip on a soda as I chat away with some locals. The dining area isn't large, but every one is super friendly as everyone wedges themselves into every available seat to be found. Simply put, the food here is AMAZING!!! And you absolutely can't beat the price of a beer! Added to that you get to share your meal with some of Americans finest and bravest. Doesn't get much better than that! Membership isn't necessary to enjoy a meal here, and we were never made to feel "weird" or "unwelcome" as non Vets or outsiders. One of the few good places in Beatty. It is non-profit to support veterans. So everything feels like a club with veteran memberships. While staying in Beatty to spend some time in Timbisha (aka Death Valley), we decided to support the VFW and order out at this place. While waiting for the order, we were inundated with the local's smoking and their loud drinking presence. Lovely. Folks can clearly do what they want to do, but what about our lungs and what about hospitality? Not to be found here. After waiting for over 40 minutes for an order of 3 veggie burgers, a bacon cheeseburger and a regular burger, we came back to our motel to discover not only that all the burgers were meat burgers but that the burgers themselves couldn't be fed to our worst enemies. Also, those were hands down the worst onion rings (horrible batter and over fried) and french fries (what was that batter used over the potatoes, and why do fries need a batter over them?) we have ever had. What a disappointment. Will never return and advise others not to patronize this establishment if edible food is your goal. read more

Had a great time here with Aussie friends while on a Death Valley foray. Tomato soup homemade, perfect grilled cheese sandwiches and authentic fajitas and four beers for a total of 46.00. We sat back by the kitchen and enjoyed watching Monzo cook. It was fun! Don't go if cigar smoke bothers you. Some cigs in there too. We were in town for a few days to enjoy Death Valley. After a long day in the park, I thought I'd check to see if the VFW serves take out, which they do. Ordered two hamburgers with fries and the staff said it would be ready in 10 minutes. We were very pleasantly surprised with not only how quick they were but the food was very good and hot. What a fun place and the patrons were so nice and friendly especially Russ (Iran vet) and his wife. They made us feel so comfortable and at ease considering we're not vets and never been to a VFW. In terms of food, our orders were excellent. My hubby ordered the meatloaf special and I ordered the mussels. What a treat and a surprise!
