I stopped in for late lunch the atmosphere was pretty cool playing some 50s music and 50s memorabilia on the walls. The menu had lots of theme names to it. Laid back place plenty of room between tables and clean. I ordered a Peggy sue burger which was a handmade burger topped with fried green tomatoes and homemade palmetto cheese. Bun was soft. The sandwich comes chips I upgraded to fries for extra $2. Worth it in my opinion. This was one of the best burgers I have had in a while. read more

Yen's was closed, so I headed over to Happy Days one day. I hadn't eaten there for a while. The last time I had stopped by, they were closed. It was around 1ish, and I was on my lunch break from work. I knew exactly what I wanted - one German dog and one Hound Dog. The food was decent. The service was absolutely awful. There were a few women working, and it wasn't busy. I had a seat. I was not greeted. One lady made eye contact a few times but did not acknowledge me. She walked right by and cleaned off a table. Another girl was waiting on a table - it was the only other table that had customers at it. I did see a third woman pass by. I'm not even sure what she was doing. I probably waited a good 15-20 minutes. It was confusing and frustrating. I didn't understand why I wasn't being waited on. I honestly felt like maybe they didn't like me or didn't want to bother. Maybe hoping the other person would wait on me? I was frustrated because I only had a certain amount of time on my break, and the clock was ticking. I was about to leave when finally the one lady who was waiting at the one other table came over. She didn't apologize for my wait. I just wanted to place my order. I told her that I needed to get back to work quickly. She got the hot dogs pretty quick, but then she never came to my table again. She never gave me a refill that I desperately needed. Never checked to see how my food was. Nothing. It was probably one of the worst services in South Charleston, honestly. Finally, I went to the register and asked for my bill. I also asked that lady for the refill that I needed. I won't be back. There are way too many other places that sell hot dogs that actually provide GOOD SERVICE! read more

The staff was friendly, however, they said our order did not print. they put the order when filled, up against their shirts they did not have trays. When they took cash or card for payment they did not wash their hands or sanitize them. They would clean off the tables not washing hands and go pickup an order and take it to a table. I really wish I could leave a better review. My wife and I visited Happy Days Cafe in South Charleston as part of an afternoon date. We had considered a couple of options before deciding on Happy Days Cafe. I was intrigued by the old time cafe theme. We checked out the menu before hand and again were impressed by all the different options. Once we got there, we noticed that they weren't too busy and had quite a few empty tables for seating. My wife and I sat close to ten minutes before we were finally greeted by a waitress passing by. She sat two menus on the table, took our drink order and told us she'd be back to take our order. Once she came back, we attempted to place our order. We asked for an order of the mozzarella cheese sticks, the classic burger to share, and instead of the chips, we asked for fries and an order of onion rings. We were quickly informed that they had just sold the last serving of onion rings. Ok, that's fine... about 10 minutes later our hamburger came out with a bag of lays potato chips and a serving of steak fries. We never saw a waitress stop at our table again. We saw them constantly at the drink station assisting customers coming up to try to get their own refills. Not once did any one stop by to check on us or ask us if our food was good (the burger was really good, and the fries were definitely hot). Unfortunately, we won't be able to review the mozzarella sticks since those never made their way to our table. As far as the ambience, the only thing Happy Days about the restaurant was the jukebox on the menu and the 50's music playing. The decor was extremely plain. Grey walls, red columns, and dim lighting. The red solo cups and the paper food baskets that the hamburgers and fries came in seemed cheap. Certainly using the blue plastic reusable cups would been less expensive than the throwaway cups. The product sitting in the customer area also took away from the atmosphere. We would love to have tried the desserts that were listed on the website though they weren't seen on any menu. But it's ok, a waitress never came by to ask us any way. read more

I went here for lunch with family. We had a large group with several children and they were very accommodating. The server was very attentive, making sure everyone was happy with their food and keeping drinks refilled. I had the Blue Hawaii burger, which reminds me of the Big Kahuna burger from Pulp Fiction. It was indeed a tasty burger! Fries are crinkle cuts and they serve them nice and crispy. I requested ranch for dipping. It is homemade and tastes great! My wife got the Chuck Berry hoagie, which she said was also very good. The kids liked their chicken tenders. The sweet iced tea was good and sweet too! Their menu online has biscuits and gravy (which I placed an order for) and they called me after to say they don't even sell it...just had it one time during a fair or something...I was charged for it, and was told it would be taken off my final order charge but it wasn't. I waited over a half hour standing at the counter to pick up the food that was to be ready at 5:00. The rootbeer float I ordered was good though, as well as the chef salad. Very rude staff. My son and I were walking by on our way to the thrift store and it was very cold so I decided to stop in here and ask if they have coffee. The lady at the counter very rudely rolled her eyes and said yes. I ordered my coffee and asked her if they have any flavored creamers. She said no so I said in that case please give me 5 creams and 5 sugars. She huffed and puffed and tossed 2 sugars and 3 creamers at me. Her tone the entire time interacting with her was a tone of disgust and annoyance. I decided since I was being treated so rudely I'd step outside and use one of the outdoor tables to sit my coffee on while I put in my cream and sugar. After I got one sugar in, I looked up to see the staff member standing at the window staring me down through it as if I was doing something wrong. I'm not sure what her problem was or what kind of idea she had of me but it was rude, hurtful and honestly quite embarrassing. I know I present myself as a clean, well mannered, well dressed and respectful person so I definitely didn't come in looking like any type of trouble. Under new management: we came in and just sat down. Took 5 minutes or so to get a menu. The place is packed. Lol -- we ordered. And our orders got swapped. They have a new ordering system. They're so kind and fixed our order right away. Our waitress hasn't come back to check on us since we placed the order. The new owner has been taking care of us along with the floor manager. Been here twice and food has been solid both times. Fried green tomatoes are great. Had the Monte Cristo special tonight and it was delicious. Served HOT was fresh and yummy. Overall, the place isn't bad. Is it amazing? No, but not bad either. There's just a lot of little quibbles here and there that also nagged at me. The atmosphere of the place being one. Overall, I enjoyed it but it felt like the place wasn't quite complete. The overall layout of the tables feels like a couple are missing, making the place feel more empty than it really should. Also while there are decorations it still feels very spartan. A couple of more peices of decor would go a long way for that feel. It also didn't help that when I was there their music system kept cutting out mid song. For a place that builds itself upon nostalgia, music is a key feature to me. Their food overall wasn't bad. A bit expensive for what I ordered, but it was severed promptly and was still piping hot. The staff were friendly and helpful. Their baked goods were a bit haphazardly displayed, which once again ties into the unfinished feel of the place. I was there before the lunch rush, shortly after they opened. By noon, when I left, the place was quickly getting busy. There is a reason the place is popular, decent food and friendly staff. I was out. Antique shopping in the area and about 3ish remembered I had not eat lunch yet. I asked a few workers where nearby was a place for a quick bite. I had noticed a few oriental places but was in the mood for something a little less spicy. They all recommended Happy Days across the street. So after loading my treasure finds into my car, I locked the door and ran across the street. I ordered a hot dog with everything and a soda to go. The interior was okay, place was a little empty, more employees standing around doing nothing than customer butts in seats. The hotdog was put together fast, clumsy and messy...I could have understood if busy, but I must have been interrupting something in the kitchen more interesting than fixing a paying customers good. I was pleased ONLY with the hot dog chili. Price was a little too high for a dog and pop $5...I won't be back. I can't handle a place that doesn't respect the paying customers! read more

I came here with 3 friends in desperate search of a West Virginia hotdog - after 30 years of being away and trying to order hot dogs with mustard, chili, slaw and onions only to get puzzled looks. And I'm happy to say they had great hot dogs! I had the lunch with a hot dog and fries, then turned around and ordered another one! One of my friends had a burger which was huge and delicious. Another one had the Hungarian cabbage soup and loved it. They all had ice cream which was some really good kind - forget what as I can't eat much ice cream sadly. Was here this past weekend, May 16th for the Veterans parade. We decided to go to Happy Days Cafe. My better half knew of this place and had ate here numerous times and enjoyed the food. He got the big hamburger which was great and I got the ham and cheese. The bread was so fresh on both of our sandwiches. The ham and cheese came with lettuce, mayo, banana peppers and your choice of cheese and it was ok, nothing to write home about. The onion rings were wonderful, but received very little amount. I'd say around 5 or 6. I enjoyed my meal, even if kinda simple, and my better half enjoyed his burger thoroughly! I'm sure we will be coming back soon!!!! read more

I have been sitting on this review for a while and I have to say my first impression was probably a little harsh. I have since lightened a bit (see below). I had been wanting to try this place out for a while, especially since Betty Lou's moved to up by the airport. Bit the bullet late this summer. I ordered Brown Eyed Girl (Reuben) $7.25 Corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut, and special sauce grilled on rye Wife ordered Yellow Submarine (Italian) $6.95 Ham, salami, pastrami, provolone cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, and Italian dressing on a hoagie bun (Hoagies served with chips and a pickle spear) Son ordered Big Bopper $6.75 Hamburger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, mustard and mayo (He requested plain with Cheese only). Daughter ordered Chicken Strips & Fries $5.95 3 Tender chicken strips, deep fried until golden brown. Served with fries (Pulled the menu details from: http://www.allmenus.com/wv/south-charleston/322368-happy-days-cafe/menu/) Daughter was only one who ordered a soft drink...the rest of us got water. The in-restaurant menu said nothing about if all sandwiches came with fries or chips; it was only mentioned specifically with certain items (e.g., the Chicken Strips). I didn't order extra fries based on the price listed and with hopes that the sandwiches were bigger and came with the standard chips and a pickle typical of a place like this. Wife did get chips and daughter got the fries as listed, but no chips with burger or Ruben. The lack of chips with the Ruben at $7.25=not too impressed. However, I have softened a bit on this stance since the menu online does say that each sandwich can be upgraded to a basket with fries and drink for extra $3.33. But I do not remember the menu in the restaurant saying this at all. The waitress just asked if wanted fries with it, so I assumed it was just an add-on. If she would have stated the basket upgrade option, I would have went for it (son wouldn't have since he was having a teenage moment and generally doesn't eat fries). However, even if I did get the basket with the Ruben ($10.58), I probably would have been a smidge disappointed since the Ruben wasn't stuffed with a little more meat and kraut....it was kind of thin. Son did complain that the burger was too salty, but he is also a bit picky and prefers certain burgers over others. Wife's Italian sub seemed very reasonable and the best deal overall was Daughters Chicken Strips and Fries. Only other thing I can say is that the Ketchup (bottle brought out to table) was generic and overly sweet (opposed to tomato/vinegar taste of a Heinz). Take home for the restaurant: 1) Double-check those menus about the basket option and get wait staff to sell the basket upgrade. I know I would have got it if I knew about it and possibly my wife would have upgraded. 2) Look into adding chips and pickle to all sandwiches/burgers. They are pretty cheap and help fill out the plate making it more appealing to the eye and wallet, even if you have to up the price by a quarter or two. 3) Get rid of the Ketchup...it was gnarly. May be a personal preference, but most restaurants carry Heinz Ketchup (and knockoffs) for a reason. Or make a variety available. read more

There were only a few tables yet we waited until our food was almost done to get refills and we needed napkins and additional silverware it took forever to get. We had two burgers, the kids had pb&j and loved it. The fat domino burger was good. It needed something extra, like bacon or something, but the Hawaiian burger was amazing. Absolutely fantastic. One of the best burgers we have had. We splurged on 2 pieces of pie and were greatly disappointed. Definitely tasted store bought, possibly frozen and thawed. Really lacking. Ate here for the first time on Feb 23rd. I had the summer breeze hotdog with fries and I loved it. The staff was friendly and ensured I had everything I needed. The American 50's/60's theme created a fun atmosphere. I also received a military discount which made the already good prices even better. I will definitely be going back. read more
