    Olive Tree Gyro

We were staying in South Charleston for several days and this was on our short list for dinner every night of our visit. Finally, on our last night, we finally made it in. It did not disappoint! We started with the loaded hummus. Phenomenal. Loaded is a perfect description. I ordered the Olive Tree gyro. Fantastic flavor. I paired it with the cucumber and tomato salad delightful. The meal was surprisingly filling and I waddled out of there like a stuffed grape leaf. Oh and I had Merlot for my beverage. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. The chef stopped by the our table. Super friendly and inviting. It was a lovely evening and we sat outside. All in all, I'd call this a delicious and wonderful dining experience.

The apricot jam on their charcuterie board is simply to die for. It reminds me a lot of what a hot honey resembles. In addition to what is pictured, I had the tabbouleh salad which was fresh, zippy, and tart-- just as a perfect tabbouleh salad should be! The music playlist with the pairing of their outdoor dining is something I genuinely appreciate as this dinner was shared with my dad whom I've not seen in person for many months. The music is nostalgic and brings me back to a simpler time.

Your chef had a part in a local play! Local news about The Olive Tree while waiting to pay for our Thanksgiving meal (2024)

If you didn't try The Olive Tree Cafe for your 2024 Thanksgiving meal, you missed out! Put them on the calendar for next year and prepare to enjoy a stress free holiday meal. I ordered two single meals for my husband and I, and The Olive Tree was generous with their portions that my spouse and I only ate one single meal! The turkey was super moist, juicy and flavorful. Both dark and white meat was included in addition to stuffing and mashed potatoes. The green beans were so tasty! The yams with mini marshmallows rounded out our meal that we didn't need a pie. The Olive Tree also provided a nice setup outside of the restaurant while waiting for your order with space heaters, cookies and the best warm apple cider I've ever had! Don't miss out next time! I would put them on redial!

Service is bad Foood is tooooo cold You can check the picture of the French fries is horrible. I don't recommend it to anyone.

Michael and his staff killed it! Let me tell you ...I am traveling with an elderly disabled mom and her dog. So bringing her across the street just wasn't an option of driving 500 miles. They made her request even though it's not on their menu and I ordered the Baba Ghanoush ...best hummus! My mom gave them a rave review and said "they should market this sandwich". They made 3 days on the road and 1 day left amazing. Almost made me cry

    Dry falafel. Not good.

Pretty disappointed. They were out of the dolmas/stuffed grape leaves when I tried to order them. Then they gave me a streaky AF dirty looking wine glass. Lastly, the falafel was dry and flavorless. Looked and tasted like hockey pucks.

Not a bad place when you're in South Charleston. Conveniently located. Nice staff. Clean establishment. Food is flavorful. Nice variety. They change up the menu, so I have something different everything I go there. Definitely worth a stop if you are in town!

Executive Summary…read more Gyro King has the potential to be a standout downtown option, with a spacious and inviting setup, generous portions, and friendly service. But my visit on a Saturday afternoon left me underwhelmed. The flavors hinted at quality, yet the execution and pricing missed the mark. My gyro combo with chips and a drink totaled $16.44--by far the most expensive meal I had during several days in town--and the soggy, warmed-over meat made the price sting even more. This is a place I'd be willing to try again during a busier time when the kitchen is moving quickly, but based on my experience, value and consistency need real improvement before Gyro King earns a higher spot on my downtown list. Full Review Location & Atmosphere Gyro King benefits from a great downtown location, adjacent to the market but operating as its own restaurant with a connecting doorway. That setup gives you shared market restrooms but still allows Gyro King to have its own space and vibe. Inside, the room is clean and appealing--long counter seating along one wall, tables down the middle, and classic tin-style ceiling panels that add character. It's bright, airy, and big enough to handle either a quick solo stop or a sit-down with friends. Parking downtown is another story. On a Saturday afternoon with a home football game nearby, both street parking and the lot out back were a challenge. That said, once inside, the restaurant was empty and I was greeted almost immediately by the gentleman working, who even stepped out to check on me as I paused at the side door. Service Friendly, quick, and attentive. Ordering was simple, and I appreciated the proactive greeting--it makes a difference when you walk into an empty dining room. Food I ordered the Original Gyro ($8) with chips and a drink, which brought my total to $16.44. For a gyro and chips, that's steep--easily the most expensive meal I had over several days in town. And while the serving size was generous (so big the box lid barely closed), the value just didn't match the quality. The bread, veggies, and sauce were fine--exactly what you'd expect. The meat, though, was the disappointment. It had good flavor, maybe even something house-prepared, but it had been sitting in a warmer too long. Instead of those crispy, caramelized edges that make gyro meat shine, it was soggy and soft. The taste hinted at greatness, but the execution let it down. When you're paying a premium, that gap matters. Overall Impression Gyro King checks a lot of boxes: strong location, clean and stylish dining space, attentive service, and portions that impress. But the pricing and execution are off. For $16+, I expect a gyro that delivers on texture as well as taste. Maybe during peak lunch or dinner hours when turnover is high, the food is excellent--but on a slower afternoon, it was underwhelming and overpriced. Would I return? Probably--but only at a busier time when I know the meat won't be languishing in a warmer. As it stands, Gyro King is a place with promise, but they're missing the mark for value.

The staff was quick and beyond generous and friendly. I appreciated the fact that they had a spicy harissa sauce too because not every Greek place has spicy sauce. I am eager to try that sauce. One of the coolest parts about this place is that the dining room is connected to a food hall with a market that has food, beer, wine, and indoor and outdoor seating.

Little Sicily - A Mediterranean Hug After a Long Day on the Trails…read more After hiking all day, stumbling upon Little Sicily felt like the universe handing us a tiny edible gift. Beckley surprised us once again, this spot turned out to be such a delicious treasure that we kept coming back like well-trained food pilgrims. The food was fantastic. Truly. Some of the best chicken shawarma, hummus, and tabouli I've had in ages, fresh, flavorful, and made with clear love. The kind of meal that makes your tired hiking muscles perk up and whisper, "Oh yes, this is the good life." Service was friendly, warm, and helpful with recommendations, the kind of staff who genuinely wants you to enjoy what you order. Honestly, I found myself wishing we had a place like this back home so I could grab big platters for a party and impress everyone without lifting a finger. A traveler can dream. A great little spot, comforting and delicious, exactly what you hope to find when you're hungry, tired, and ready to be fed well.

First on the table was fresh pita, hot and puffy right out of the oven. Second was a side salad with romaine, olives and tomatoes- no iceberg lettuce here ( I dislike iceberg lol ). Usually kebabs are tough and overcooked. Not here, this is the best kebabs I've ever had. For dessert: Tiramisu! Light and delicious with balance of espresso and chocolate.
