I only had their apple fritter because they were out of cinnamon rolls but if the fritter is an indication of their other donuts then Yeaa this place is great!! I just really love this place. It's your typical local doughnut shop, where the regulars can be seen stopping in every morning. It's a family run spot with fresh doughnuts, hot coffee, snacks, and some fruit options. It's always warm and cozy and clean inside, and the woman who works the counter always greets you with a huge smile and a welcoming warmth. I come here maybe twice a month but by my second time here the staff had already learned my name and knew my favorite order. Their ham and cheese croissants are delicious, and they'll sneak free doughnut holes into your bag if you order something salty for breakfast. I work in the area and my coworkers get donuts from this shop all the time. I know they are always delicious and have such variety. However this week was the first time I visited and I have definitely found my go to donut shop now! I ordered 3 dozen donuts and 2 dozen donut holes. The shopkeeper asked what the occasion was and I said I just wanted to bring some donuts to work to share some sweetness with my coworkers because we have been especially stressed out all week about Coronavirus (we are a travel company). I recently moved to Berkeley and woke up early on a Saturday morning to go fetch some furniture for the new house. I took the bus to the Office Depot on Gilman, and got off exactly in front of Happy Donuts. Now, I openly admit that after working the entire week, I tend to get extremely lazy on the weekends, especially when it comes to cooking. So I didn't feel like whipping up some breakfast - Not even putting some cereal in a plate and pouring some milk. So by the time I got off the bus, I was starving. Seeing that Happy Donuts was exactly in front of me, I decided to go in and grab something quick to eat before continuing my mission of making my new place look decent. There were some people ordering, but the place was mostly empty. I ordered a turkey sandwich with everything, which was done immediately in front of me. While not the greatest sandwich in the world, it was pretty good, especially for a lazy dude like myself. The guys working there were super-nice, so that's always a bonus. If I had the sandwich alone, I would probably give this review three stars. However, I got a free glazed donut with the sandwich. Wow, that was one of the tastiest donuts I've had in quite some time. These donuts are huge. I felt sick after (not because of them) but because my body could not take that much donut. Donuts are my weakness so when I usually go after a long period of not eating them, I binge. One donut is enough here, but I ordered two. I was once treated to lunch here by a former client who literally begged me to join his company, promising that I would get very rich once they went public. And presumably both of us would be able to afford a better lunch than the one we were having at Happy Donut. This was during the heady days of the dot-com era. My host no longer works for the company - it didn't go public, after all - but I still have Happy Donut. This is simply the best donut shop in the Bay Area (and I've tried them all). They really know how to make a cake donut. I generally detest donut holes, but theirs are amazing. Not sure I would try the hot dog, though. Skip the turkey sandwich, too - I had it during the above-mentioned lunch, and still recall its salty texture. The family that runs the place is very nice. read more

I was a middle school teacher in Richmond and lived nearby. Everyday I got my coffee from these guys and often I purchased donuts for my classes as a reward (yes I bribed 13 year olds with donuts). Happy Donuts is always quite consistent in its quality, and the people there are quite nice too. I've stopped in anywhere from 6am to 8pm depending on my work schedule and treat-hankerin'. One thing, I keep forgetting to limit how many donuts I order, because they'll inevitably throw in a few holes too. French crullers, old fashioned and crumb are my favorites. Ones where the owners/workers know their regulars, and don't really give you any kind of warmth until they have a reason to - some would say, this goes against customer service; the folks that say this, have never worked a service job before, or are polite jerks that smile in your face and talk behind you back. Happy Donuts feels like a homey family run small business. The prices are decent, the free stuff almost always comes standard.
