This place executes superbly. Especially a fan of their cheese puffs, their cake made with sour cherries (kirschkuchen or it comes in pie form), and their olallieberry pie. For Pi Day, they cut the letter Pi into the upper crust of their pie, a charming touch (my photo doesn't do it justice). The folks who work there are always capable and friendly. I liked reading a bit about their history: https://www.berkeleyside.org/2021/03/11/fatapples-berkeley-el-cerrito-history

Bacon and Swiss quiche - half eaten

From where I was visiting in San Francisco, it was a good size drive to Berkeley. We came here to have brunch at Fat Apple's restaurant and bakery. Though the selection of bakery items were limited, there was plenty of mouth watering choices. We ordered separate pocket pies of chicken, spinach and blueberry. Each one was flaky on the outside, flavorful on the inside and bursting with taste. Then a slice of apple pie. It was another hit. This was followed by a slice of bacon and Swiss quiche. Lovely crust, nice body, soft filling of eggs, cheese and bacon that hit the spot with each bite. Staff was super friendly. Was it worth the drive there? You bet.

Ordered both a pumpkin and harvest pie for Thanksgiving from fat apples and picked it up this morning at 9 AM. There were two lines, one for online orders, and the other for walkins and phone orders. The line moved quickly, and the staff was sweet enough to provide complementary coffee for the patrons. I ordered a pumpkin pie and a harvest pie. The harvest pie is a combination of apple and cranberry. Can't wait to try them out tonight.

It doesn't get more classic old school diner in the East Bay than Fat Apple's Restaurant & Bakery located on a rather innocuous business strip on MLK Way near downtown Berkeley. This is one of two locations in the northwestern area of the East Bay, the other being located on Fairmont Avenue in El Cerrito. While that location could be considered more modern and light and airy, this location in Berkeley is more down home and traditional thanks to their wood finished interior and open-air diner-like kitchen. I came on a Saturday evening with a friend who has lived in the area for what seems like forever and loves going to Fat Apple's for breakfast and lunch but rarely ventured out there for dinner so we decided to take a chance and see the crowd that they generate at this time of day. As it turns out, it's not that crowded, at least at roughly 7:30 p.m. when we arrived with plenty of ample street parking out front as well. The menu is quite large even for dinner, which is surprising since Fat Apple's bread and butter is more breakfast, lunch and desserts. As expected, they still serve hamburgers, sandwiches and big salads for dinner but they have dinner plates like Grilled Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Meatloaf. Think of it as a localized and slightly elevated version of Marie Callendar's, if that conjures any memories for you out there. Since I was here for just the classics and wasn't super famished, I decided to go with their Fried Chicken Sandwich, which was made with batter-fried chicken breast served on a white bun topped with spicy mayonnaise, housemade bread & butter pickles and iceberg lettuce slaw and two slices of tomatoes. For roughly 12 dollars, don't expect much beyond that includes side orders, which have to be ordered separately. So I went with an order of Onion Rings, expecting a basket filled with deep-fried breaded onion rings, I received three on my plate, the same plate that featured my Fried Chicken Sandwich entree. Needless to say, I was very disappointed due to the lack of food on my plate, but the Fried Chicken Sandwich was decent and flavorful nonetheless. Of course, what everyone comes to Fat Apple's is for one of their signature sweets, namely their desserts. I knew I had to order a slice of their pies and went with their Chocolate Cream Pie for about $5.50. At least with this order, it met my expectations, as it was as silky smooth as possible. Would I return for a meal at Fat Apple's in the future? Well, that's depending on the occasion. But rest assured, I would always return for one of their signature sweets, from their pastries like their eclairs to slices of pie, you can't go wrong and will always feel at home when you sample a classic dessert at Fat Apple's.

Absolutely perfect apple pie couldn't have baked a better one myself and I've done my fare share of baking including many years working at a culinary school for fun. Thank you Fat Apple Restaurant & Bakery for a delicious alternative to birthday cake for my husband's birthday. We we're on a quest for the perfect apple pie and well, happily and luckily we found it:)

There's a side bakery where you can pick up orders to go as well as pies. For this visit, I just picked up pies to go. Unfortunately they were out of banana cream pie so I decided to go with the chocolate pie and the apple pie a la mode...the ice cream comes in its own container. The chocolate pie was ok, but the apple pie was the star. When it was heated and combined with the cold ice cream, it was delicious. Service was friendly and fast. I'll come back to try the food here, as well as the banana cream pie

We had been to Tarocco for lunch and figured we would ask them for a quote, too. My daughter warned me that the owner is trying to be an "influencer" on Instagram and posts photos of herself in crop Tops so I should beware, but that's fine by me. We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. We took our business elsewhere and recommend that you do, too.

I ordered the Sai Oua lava egg plate, pork jowl on the side, and khanom krok. First of all, holy hell, that egg was SO soft and yummy. Next time, I'd definitely get the grilled pork jowl lava egg plate instead. I can be pretty picky with pork, but this one melted in my mouth and had so much flavor. The khanom krok was beautiful and a great dish to order if you have friends to share it with. For me, one bite was more than enough as a sweet little dessert at the end of the meal. It's also one of those places that makes you want to stay. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and generous. The burgers are loaded and perfectly balanced, the fries are always crisp (never soggy, which is rare), and everything tastes high-quality and made to order. You have to try the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter tastes homemade and the butter takes it to another level... it's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. I'll even DoorDash it all the way to Jingletown. The patio setup is really well done... there's a mix of larger tables for groups and higher bar-style seating for smaller hangs. The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.
