I came here during the lunch hour and was impressed to see the array of donuts still available. I purchased two donuts (a vanilla French cruller and a maple round) and an everything bagel for $5.50. There is a sign that says there is a $5 minimum to use a credit card otherwise there is a charge to use it. The guy behind the counter was friendly and greeted me upon arrive. There are a couple of tables that you can sit at to eat your donuts, which is nice. I stopped by here after leaving Rush Bowl and was happy I did. They had a purple looking donut with sprinkles and it turned out to be blueberry flavored. I ate that whole donut while walking down the street. I normally don't like eating on public streets but it was calling my name. I got several other donuts all delicious and soft. Downtown Oakland welcomes a good old traditional neighborhood donut shop a few blocks away from my job. This is definitely going to make it harder to get rid of my muffin top as I now have gained yet another spot, along with Aroma's, James and the Giant Cupcake and Sweet Belly, to venture to for dessert! I have stopped by Happy Donuts a few times and have gotten some delicious glazed donuts. I judge a good glazed donut based on the chewy dense fluffy texture of the dough and whether the taste is so good that I initially plan on eating a few bites but end up eating the whole thing and reaching for another. That's why I never buy just one donut. Happy to say that the glazed donuts delivered on texture and flavor and you can get 2 for around $3. I was excited to learn of happy donuts opening on 17th Street in Oakland. Situated next door to Liba Falafel, this strip of 17th is home to a lot of good food! Happy donuts opened on Tuesday. It's an old school donut shop, with all of the glazed donuts, maple bars, sprinkles and apple fritters your heart desires. The croissants and apple fritters are huge! They also have coffee and juice, etc. I ordered my favorite item from my childhood - a strawberry and cream cheese croissant ($2.50). These are often hard to find. Has a great variety of delicious donuts! I ordered the apple fritter which turned out to be delicious! The portion size of the apple fritter is huge so I was able to finish half of it but saved it for later. I never was able to try this donut shop because I would always be around the area when it's closed. Luckily today it was open and I knew then I needed to try their donut. Delicious. So delicious. The guy working here was super friendly, we had a chat and I got 6 donuts. They have both cake donuts and fluffy airy donuts, and both slant toward the airy side. They also have cinnamon rolls, bagels, and croissants. I bought more than I could eat at once, and cut three of them in half for breakfast. Boston cream, double chocolate cake donut, and cinnamon roll. All were very light, and the Boston cream (my lifetime favorite type of donut) had a delicious custard filling. I got a latte too, and as a bit of a coffee snob I recommend increasing the amount of coffee in the size of drink you get if you are a coffee shop coffee drinker. For example, the double shot latte was 16 oz so I asked him to put it into a 12 oz cup. He actually applauded me for my choice Very high quality donuts, I will definitely be back. Happy Donuts opened on 6/19. It's a hole in the wall, but there's some room to move around. Solid hours: M-F 6 a.m.-5 p.m. (My thanks to Audrey S. for her helpful pics.) I didn't pay attention to them, but there are some tables if you want to eat inside. The seating capacity seems to be 9. There's a fridge by the entrance. It's small, but features a nice selection of drinks (ex: Fanta Orange; Fanta Grape; Hershey's Chocolate Milk; Martinelli's Apple Juice and Sparkling Apple Juice). I'm glad that I left work a little early. I was the only customer (a woman was about to enter when I left). I only saw one worker. The woman was working off to the right when I came in. I think she's Korean, but I'm not positive. Anyway, the woman was friendly, helpful, and thorough (I had to repeat myself once, but it was my fault). She was going to bag my donuts at first, but she quickly thought to ask me if I wanted a box. She also carefully taped the box closed. (I was also thankful when she asked me if I wanted the receipt.) *Updating review since I was able to go early morning* Now that I have these donuts in-hand, they're definitely 5/5 on the taste and value. The owner or worker was a younger Asian guy and super friendly - we chatted briefly about what was just on the news. He let me take my time to decide between a dozen and a half dozen donuts, and helped me with a lotto ticket too. The price for 6 donuts, one special, and one very kindly added baker's dozen, came out to $9.00 which is an amazing deal for the area. Noticed coffee is cheap here too; however, I did not get the chance to try it -- about $2.75 for a large iced coffee. Sodas and various drinks appeared to be a dollar per can. He offered the option for an extra bag in-case the donuts got squished, though I declined and opted for just the box for the 7 wonderful carb rings. Upon arriving home, I tried the chocolate buttermilk, classic sugar puffy one, and the blueberry donut. They were brilliantly crispy and light. Zero excess notes on the palate -- just nice, lightly sweet, crispy exterior, fluffy interior. The blueberry donut probably highlighted this the best; though, the chocolate glazed buttermilk had a fine balance between dense (as it should be) and fluffy and crumbly yet moist. Poorly labeled business hours aside, this will be my new go-to for donuts provided I can reach them before noon. Coffee lovers, the coffee is passable. They have an assortment of whatever you want to put into it, dairy, non dairy, raw, white, pump sugar etc. However, I was disappointed with the donuts. It's Wednesday today, and they were clearly not fresh. Fresh donuts, particularly raised donuts are light and fluffy in texture. These were more bready and for the chocolate bar, it had accumulated oil on the bottom side, which can happen non fresh donuts. They should have a section for "day old" donuts. If you're going to eat fat and sugar, make sure to make it count. Only fresh. Three stars for the coffee. read more
