I am pregnant with my first baby, and Happy Hippo has been my savior! I love stopping by and talking to the owners, and they let me ask a million questions. Especially with birth classes being online, this has been one of the only places I've been able to meet moms and ask questions face to face. Prices are fair, the clothing is always great quality, and they have EVERYTHING! Diaper genies, belly support bands, and of course plenty of toys and clothing. I absolutely adore this store! I always have. Although, I don't have any kids of my own, I ALWAYS come here for every baby shower I go to! They have the best of the best apparel for babies of all ages! I seriously always find the cutest gifts! I can sometimes get carried away when I start shopping here, SO BE WARNED! Lol You can find a lot of brand new apparel, some still with original tags on them from big brands like, (Patagonia, Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand, Ralph Lauren, etc) & they have the absolute BEST prices. Happy Little Hippos is such a Santa Barbara gem! My husband and I are expecting our first child this summer and HLH has become my pregnancy happy place. They've had everything we've needed so far (pregnancy pillow, parenting books, beautiful nursery gear & newborn clothes) for a fraction of the price of other stores. The owners have lovely taste and are very informed if you have questions. Simultaneously, they give plenty of space if you want to spend an hour picking up every adorable onesie (like I did the other day). It also feels great to know that these goods are being recycled in our community, helping other mamas and cutting down on needless waste. There are not a lot of stores in town that sell used baby items so I am beyond grateful for Happy Little Hippos! It can be very overwhelming as a new parent to buy all the equipment brand new when they grow out stuff SO QUICKLY! When I was pregnant, I bought a couple of clothing items, a birthing book and some onsies. We also came back here to look for carriers (ultimately, we were gifted some). I received a great recommendation that this store carried a specific item I needed and more. I will start by saying that I did eventually find what I needed. They have lots of good quality used items. I would give this store five stars, but a weird 'incident' gets it two. When I got there, I was greeted by the owner. Nothing weird there. I looked around briefly in the main part of the store and realized that there was more in the back part and went there. Came back a few minutes later to look at some baby carriers. While browsing the carriers, I heard footsteps rushing towards me. Logically, I turned to look and saw the owner rushing to see where I was. When she saw me in the corner looking at the carriers, she immediately turned around and headed back to the front of the store. She never asked me if I needed anything or if I was looking for anything in particular. Why did she rush to see where I was? It felt like she was monitoring me to make sure that I wasn't stealing. It felt weird at that point. I would have normally walked out, but I felt like I needed to prove to her that I was in fact there to purchase some items. Yuk! I am very careful to not make assumptions, but in this case, compared to how much attention the other customers were getting, she definitely was checking on me. I brought clothes that was perfectly good condition. It was not faded & was offered $4!!!! I personally think your better off selling it at a yardsale or on facebook marketplace.The first time I went no one was at the store & felt as if the person in charge was waiting for me to steal because I tried waiting but no one would come out. I've been shopping at Happy Little Hippos since my 3 grandchildren were born 8 years ago. Almost their entire wardrobes have come from this wonderful store, and every time I return from a visit with them, I take a bag of clothes they have outgrown for credit. The owners are so friendly and helpful, and greet me by name when I come in. As they grow older, it gets harder to find resale clothes for them, but my boys are thrilled with the puffy vests I found them on my last visit. I highly recommend this store and will be sad when the kids outgrow the store! read more

This is the only used children's clothing store that I go to. The prices are completely reasonable. The two ladies who own the place are friendly and helpful. You can sell used kid's clothes and receive store credit. You can also consign baby gears and maternity wears. Its also very casual, you are not required to set up an appointment like Sweet Pineapple and Peanuts since the owners work right there in the shop. This tiny shop is quite popular with the locals and it is packed with people every time I visited, which means their merchandizes change quickly with lots of buyers and sellers. read more

Love this place! I am new to the Mission area so I just went a week ago but have been hearing about this place since I became pregnant. I only spoke with one owner who is incredibly friendly and helpful (short brown hair but I forget her name!) Very kid friendly place, I did not feel like my crazy toddler was inconveniencing anyone which can sometimes happen even in children's stores... I consigned a few of my maternity pieces instead of putting them on craigslist & traded in some of my son's cute clothes for credit and ended up only spending $5 on a shopping seat cover which is usually $50! Myself and my family are now regulars. Definitely check this place out!!! **One negative, parking is terrible and terrifying. I park in Trader Joes and walk down! read more

Happy Little Hippo is the best baby store ever! There is constant turn over of items and I always happily find things I do and don't need! I love being in this store. The two women who own and operate it are always so helpful and friendly, helping me find clothes for my now 7 year old daughter who is quite picky. I can put my name on a list for a particular piece of equipment, and when it comes in I get a phone call. They trade items for cash or credit, and I always take the credit and love using it at this beautifully run shop. There is no need to buy new when I can get the same items for much better prices! A place where folks can go to recycle baby and maternity clothes and items is a great idea for a store! Found a lot of useful items here- All excellent used quality. Staff is very nice. Can't really go looking for a specific item and expect to find it as product based on what parents give/sell to store- But I seem to always find useful items! My husband and I drove down from Berkeley to visit family in SB. We have plenty of mom/baby consignment shops in the bay area, but I haven't found one as good as Happy Little Hippo. What sets them apart is the quality, quantity, and prices. Everything is priced to move and I couldn't believe I found 5 maternity dresses, 2 maternity bathing suits, and clothes for baby in one visit. I had to come back a second time before we left! We arrived early and had no problem finding parking in front of the shop but there is also parking in the back of the store. read more

I love Happy Little Hippo! It is so much fun to bring in some of my daughter's gently used items and get to leave with new (gently used) things for her without spending any money! I love their drop-in buy back day on Saturday (they do it on Wednesdays too) because I can show up without an appointment and usually I don't have to wait long for someone to look at my items. They also have a great selection of items including maternity clothes and lots of gear for kids! Love this place! read more

This is a wonderful place- my 3-year-old thinks it's like a play date because there are always other kids and toys for her to play with while I shop with baby in the carrier. It's a mom's dream- they are super kid-friendly and the environment is like you are visiting with friends (the owners are so sweet and friendly) while kids play. We consign about once a month and often left with a bag full of clothing without paying a dime extra! Plus, you know you won't be sifting through stained or ripped clothing- it's all organized, good quality, and super cute. read more

This store is becoming a local gem. The owners are super friendly and helpful. The merchandise is well-organized by size and "department" (i.e. baby, maternity, baby gear, etc.). For baby and children's clothes, the prices are reasonable, usually being comparable to clearance items at Old Navy or Gymboree. The other categories are an even better deal. For instance, I bought a like new Hotsling for $24.95, which retails new at $50-$60. My experience with selling merchandise was okay. I expected to earn more, but the owner was willing to consign more valuable items. Furthermore, they do need to make a decent profit. Overall, it's a happy little place to shop. read more
