Sushi and service were excellent! The ordering process was a bit confusing for us first timers. Although we had researched the menu prior to arriving for lunch, we thought we could order with ease. However, the menu was written in various formats on different sections on the walls and leaning against the counter. It was hard to follow and decide what we had wanted. Once we did, it wasn't really clear how exactly we were supposed to order. Do we seat ourselves and someone would take our order, or do we place our order at the counter/ cashier. Finally, a very friendly member of the staff directed us to order from the counter. At that point, we paid, and were given a table number so our food could be brought to us when ready. Smooth sailing from then on, as our meals were prepared perfectly and the waiter, who had also taken our order was very attentive. I live in San Francisco and have had top notch sushi as the norm. I didn't expect Sf quality or prices, but after reading the reviews, thought it would be above average. It was not. The chirashi was miserable...75% rice, 10% radish spirals and 15% fish. The shashimi was only 3 types of fish and only 6 slices. They were very thinly sliced. I've never had a sushi chef cut sashimi in such a way! The highlight was the seaweed salad. Tempura was average, shrimp spring rolls full of lettuce and completely tasteless, served with canned industrial Chinese duck sauce and shrimp "dumplings" that I think you can buy at Costco in the frozen section. 2 stars because at least the thinly sliced fish was fresh. read more

I got takeout sushi from Happy Maki. I ordered a spicy tuna and a philadelphia roll. The sushi was notably fresher and better than the order I picked up from the Stonewell a few weeks back for less money. Important when sushi places are less than a 5 minute drive from one another.... The inside of the restaurant is small, dark, modern and cute. I don't see it as being a great date place- probably just better to grab a quick lunch and they do have lunch specials. The guy at the counter was pleasant and it was an in and out experience. I'd be so bold to say that this is the best sushi in Conshohocken. If you want a sit-down experience and a higher quality product/more options then you need to head down to Bluefin2. read more

I have considered getting a job here just so I can eat here every day. I could eat at Happy Maki every day for the rest of my life. I love the Spicy Tuna Rolls, Yellowtail Rolls, Angry Scallop Rolls, and Sunkissed Rolls. The Bento Boxes are great, but the sushi here is what it's all about. I ordered a house salad and didn't expect much but it had a homemade ginger dressing that is fantastic. I love everything I've ever tried here. I came here around dinner time on a Monday and it was unbelievably fast, about 5 minutes for a roll. The roll itself (a shrimp Avocado) was a bit expensive and not amazing, but still pretty good. Happy Maki is okay, I suppose. It comes off as a hole-in-the-wall sushi place, and it is small and cozy inside. The staff is very polite and endearing. The food is meh. The bowl that contained my miso soup smelled like dish soap. This can be interpreted two ways: at least they're cleaning the bowls, but apparently they aren't doing so well enough. The smell, by proxy, made my brain think I was tasting said soap. I couldn't finish it. Their sushi was pretty good. Lackluster, really. I also got chicken katsu in a bento box - I had never had katsu. This was good in the scheme of chicken, though the other components of the bento box, not so much. I think the soap smell really set my tastebuds off. I'd be willing to try it again, as this was probably a one-time thing. read more

Chicken teriyaki bowl and Chicken katsu bowl both came with miso soup. The miso was average. The chicken rice bowls however had maybe five thin strips of chicken at the most, very skimpy. This was not worth $8.45 at all. We should've known when we didn't see anyone in the restaurant at 7:45pm, not a good sign. read more

Every time I choose this easy in/out Japanese sushi place... It never disappoints. The host/cashier is always so courteous professional & charming. The menu is elaborate especially considering the space of the restaurant is. Every *special* sushi roll I have tried is great! Food is fresh with nice presentation too! The prices are fair they are superior in taste considering you pay about that much at the sushi pre-made/packaged from trendy super markets. There are a couple of things I really like about this place: - my wife doesn't eat seafood, and Happy Maki actually makes rolls with meats (cooked, of course), like beer teriyaki. Their vegetable rolls are pretty good too. - they have some pretty creative rolls here, and daily specials - the eating area, should you choose to eat in, is pleasant and clean On the downside: - their price point is a little high, pretty close to sitdown sushi places. It's not uncommon for me to spend $50 here on takeout. - service/friendliness is hit or miss If you happen to be in the area, I would check out Happy Maki, but not sure I would go out of my way. Stopped in here for lunch today. I didn't think it was that expensive. I got a shrimp tempura roll, miso soup and a house salad for $15. The place is cute for a take out sushi place. You can also order at the counter to eat in. The shrimp tempura sushi was tasty and fresh. The salad was good as well. I really liked the dressing. The miso soup left a little to be desired. I think it had one piece of tofu in it. I would go here again if in the area and in the mood for sushi. (Actually, I'm always in the mood for sushi.) read more

This review is for the lunch menu. This place is quick and convenient, but the price you pay for that is high and the quality is sub-par for the price. I paid $13-14 for 4 pieces of Nigiri (Sushi) and a Spicy Tuna Roll. The Spicy Tuna Roll was okay but the Sushi pieces were lacking in quality. I tried Salmon, Tuna, and Snapper. Salmon was okay because the fattiness of the fish masks the quality. Tuna and Snapper were extremely disappointing. The Tuna had a bright red color rather than a deeper ruby as it should be. It's sad to say, but the quality of fish was comparable to King Buffet ($9 w/ tip for lunch). If it's not too far from you, go out of your way to go to Bluefin instead for lunch. Their comparable lunch combo is $15 and it comes with 5 pieces of Sushi vs. 4. Add in tip of $3 for a total of $18, and you have a much higher quality meal served with Miso Soup or a Salad. With that said, I'm willing to come back to Happy Maki but definitely not for Sushi. I'd be willing to give them one more star if their Bento boxes or Donburi is good. read more

I've seen this place pop up a while ago but never went by... I am ready to write this after 2 satisfactory recent trips. I've had the chicken donburi which is tasty without being too salty as it often is and I love that they add vegetables to this dish! Huge plus for me. I've also had a couple rolls/makis from here and they make it neat and pretty without a ton of rice to make it appear bigger. I appreciate that. The avocado/cucumber and other ingredients used seem super fresh and, the raw tuna I have had there has been very fresh. We also tried the monkey balls once and liked it a lot! It's different and interesting in flavor. They have good lunch specials too! It's nothing amazing, but Conshi area lacks in casual Japanese spots so I am happy to have this nearby to fulfill my occasional cravings. read more

The Sushi isn't bad, but it's overpriced for the quality and small portion sizes. The lunch special isn't a bad deal, but I'd rather drive 5 minutes more to Blue Fin on Germantown which has some of the best Sushi in the country. If you don't mind going to North Wales, Assi Plaza has excellent, fresh, mouth watering sushi for less than half the price they're charging here. read more

I probably get something from Happy Maki every few weeks or so. I appreciate that there's a clean, not-bad place in Conshohocken to get sushi or a bento box. My only complaint is that without a coupon from the Clipper Magazine that shows up every once in awhile, it's pretty expensive. My favorite thing to order is the Chicken Katsu bento. Miso soup, katsu, rice, 4 small pieces of California roll and salad for soemthing like $14. It's not cheap, but it's pretty good comfort food. PS. The screens at the cashier aren't touch-screens. We had quite the opposite experience than that of 'jenna c' and 'joe s'. We loved Happy Maki and didn't find it weird at all! We ordered the Philly sushi, the Shrimp Tempura Crunch sushi, and the Chicken-Katsu Rice Bowl. All were delicious.. and the Shrimp Tempura Crunch was an absolute winner for us--we highly recommend it! We will most definitely go back there and we're quite eager to try other menu items. The dining area is quaint and clean and the staff was friendly. We actually showed up 5 minutes before closing and they welcomed us and allowed us eat there past closing time. And who cares about the plastic ware!! It wasn't tacky at all and as long as there's good food in it, that's all that matters!! Happy Maki also sort of reminded of us of a mini version of Pei Wei Asian Diner (which is also really good), but with a much larger selection of Sushi. Finally some better eats in that area of Conshocken! A little pricey but worth it. :) read more

I went practically 30 minutes before they were closing one evening night, and they were still very friendly to me. It does have places to sit down in the restaurant, however you first go to the counter and order your food, such as like a Panera. I sat down to wait for my food, and they brought it out to me. I am not sure if that is regular practice, or they did that because I was the only one in the restaurant. There is a good chance at busier times that you are suppose to pick up your food from the counter. I only ordered one maki roll, the Happy Mango, and it was very good. I did not go crazy ordering a bunch of rolls only because they are a little over priced. Some rolls are about $3-5 more than other places I have been to that I know has good quality rolls. If the prices were a little less I would have tried out more. The best bang for your buck would be a rice bowl. You get a very reasonable amount of food, and a nice cup of miso soup. They have good sized cups available if you just want water, and the most important thing I noticed is that they were very clean! Even though it was closing time for them they did not make me feel rushed, and I overall enjoyed my meal. Also it is a BYOB if you are interested. read more

This is always my go to place for sushi in the suburbs. It sits as a hidden gem in this strip mall. I love happy maki for their fresh fish and uniquely and addicting roll options as well as their kind service. You are always greeted with a kind smile and hello and leave satisfied. Some rolls can get a bit pricey, but they do have a rotating daily special which allows you sample some of their classic rolls for a discounted price depending on the day of the week. They also do a nifty $10 lunch special with 1 raw and 1 cooked roll that is always a good option for lunch on the run. If you need advice for a standard meal for 2 and guaranteed GREAT experience, opt for the hiyashi, tornado and sunkissed rolls. You can thank me later. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Happy Maki! Heres the flow: Go to the back of the restaurant to order, there is a chalkboard with specials and a menu on the counter ad on the wall at the right, place your order and pay then go sit. Just a note, don't try ordering Donburi, they don't make them anymore. They bring your food to you. The sushi rolls may seem expensive, but I found the bowls to be very reasonable. The roll we tried was they Happy Mango. The fruit on top was evenly balanced with the salmon and the salmon tasted very fresh! I had the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura Rice Bowl, it was more than enough for dinner and reasonably priced at $10. The tempura was delicious and I got a good mixture of broccoli, sweet potato, and shrimp. We've grown too fond of the sushi place across the street to change allegiances, but if we want Japanese style Asian food or something other than sushi we'll be back to Happy Maki. read more

Happy maki has the most fresh, unique, delicious sushi I've ever encountered. I take my son here all the time and he loves it. The rolls are a bit small for the high price but the quality makes up for it. The lobster roll has big chunks of lobster throughout. The angry scallop is spicy and delicious. Great lunch specials! I usually get the $10 spicy salmon roll and 2 pieces of nigiri ( I get the eel!). I love that you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. It's still presented really nicely and you have actual plates and nice chopsticks, but this allows us to go there and have a nice meal and be on the road within a 40 minute timeframe at most. I'm hoping to try the bento box next time I'm there as its only $10 as well. read more

Down from 5 stars. I was referred to them years ago by a native Japanese friend who stuffed my belly my first visit. If I'm rating flavours: 5 stars. But my last 3 visits were disappointing. Their prices continue to go up which I could tolerate but their portions are questionable. Chicken Teriyaki Bento is a favourite. It's now up $4, from $14 to $18. I didn't used to care because I could have my fill on my lunch break and finish leftovers after work. But seriously, let's call it what is: Onion Teriyaki. I've asked for extra chicken but was told they have no control over how much I get. I opted once for Gyoza instead of sushi and I got two tiny bite sized fried bits with no sauce. The majority of the plate is an ice cream scoop size of rice and a cup of soup. The half handful of lettuce for salad is wilted if it's delivered. Not worth the money. Sorry Happy Maki, it's been a good run but I think I'm done. read more

Much better than the "take-out" sushi you get from the counter in the grocery store but not quiet on the same level as some of the other sushi places in the area. My take: a good place to go for some decent and quick sushi. Surprisingly creative menu, nice staff, clean eating area (if you choose to eat there). Got the chicken teriyaki roll once and it was good I just prefer the seafood rolls. Overall everything is phenomenal. Have yet to have a bad thing.
