The park is all gravel which does make it easier to pick up dog poop but makes it very difficult to walk in. Also if it's very hot out it can burn your dogs feet. A lot of the photos showed water so we thought that the dogs would be able to swim but there was no water today (9/4) and didn't see a way to even access to water. On the plus side, there is a lot of shade and trees and benches to sit. There are also a lot of dog poop bag stations, as well as a porta potty.

I'm a San Diego native and yes it's home but Colorado has my heart. When you arrive at Barr Lake there is an entrance fee but it was minimal. I purchased the park pass. It was worth it. When you drive through the gate the speed is slow because there are multiple parking lots and turn off areas and pedestrians so keep an eye out. I drove to the last lot where the information center is and had no problem finding a parking spot. There were several people and groups already there and setting off on their walk. I joined them. It was a clear October day in 2020 and I was excited to walk and gawk and snap pictures. I walked about for over three hours and met some lovely people. I believe I snapped over 200 shots that day. It's one of my all time favourite places in Colorado.

It's about 30 minutes from Denver and I when I arrived it was so windy so I didn't get to explore much. I will say though, it's a beautiful State Park with tons of parking, picnic tables, benches, and places to grill and chill. A lot of trails in the park too that I can't wait to go back and check out. You can take a boat out there as well. Water bowls all around that people fill up, that was really thoughtful. Some agility structures, a complete walk around trail to get your own exercise. It has all the basic necessities with garbage bins, poop bag dispensers, and even a separate small dog enclosure. My only real issue with it is that it can attract some sketchy people. For example, I've seen a guy light up a joint there (in the presence of kids nonetheless) and the smell was nauseating. For the most part, however, it has decent people who know how to be respectful.

My pup and I live in NoCo so it's a bit of a drive for us, but I love taking her to new spots so she can explore new places and scents. I'm glad we made the trek here to check it out. We visited on a Monday around 1pm and there was plenty of parking available; It's also free to visit! There's a couple portapotties at the entrance and spots to grab some baggies if you forgot them at home. It's an open natural area so there's signs at the trailhead with warnings of rattlesnakes and coyotes so keep that in mind as you're exploring to keep an eye on your pup. We stayed for about an hour and she loved every minute of it, but it was a really windy day so we called it a day earlier than anticipated. I'm thankful we spent the afternoon exploring this beautiful area together.
