Bento box #1 (chicken teriyaki, tempura and Cali roll)

There are three teriyaki spots in Shelton but since my husband has tried this one in the past (and it had the best reviews and most pics on Yelp) I decided to try it as well. There wasn't a current picture of the menu online or website so we decided to just drive there to order to-go. We went on a Friday night around 6pm and it was BUSY! Only couple tables of people eating inside so mostly people there to pick up their take out orders. We ended up ordering the Bento box #1 (chicken teriyaki, shrimp and veggies tempura and California roll) and the General Tsao's to share. The chicken teriyaki and California roll were the only things we liked! The tempura was super hard (wrong batter for sure) and there was randomly two gyoza's in there which was strange. The general Tsao's was also not that great. I was pleasantly surprised about the California roll, I mean not the best I've had but pretty good given it's at a randomly teriyaki place out here. We'd come back for this and then teriyaki chicken!

In the picture is general tso's chicken, chicken fried rice and a magical volcano roll!

Happy teriyaki wok has yummy food. My wife likes it because she says it doesn't have as much salt and not as much sauce and it has good texture and it tastes really good because it's not as greasy as other places.. and they're willing to do no spicy hot sauce when she says she would like a zero for a hot sauce. I like it because they give you a good amount of food, especially for takeout. They always seem busy, and so this is the place to go if you want teriyaki wok in the Shelton area.

    Chicken Teriyaki and Katsu Chicken

I had heard bad things about this location and new management but I was mostly pleasantly surprised. The decor was traditional and yet contemporary. The service was great, and we were greeted by kind staff members. The food wasn't bad either. Specifically, the Orange chicken was excellent as were the Gyoza, and Chicken Katsu. The Won Ton soup is in an egg flower base which needed just a tad more salt and to use a Chinese style won ton rather than Japanese gyoza dumpling, but it was still good as well. The only serious complaint I had would be the Teriyaki sauce itself on the chicken. The flavor was off. It doesn't quite taste traditional. I couldn't put my finger on it. It would have been a 5 star experience but Teriyaki needs to be the star of a teriyaki restaurant, and especially in Washington there is an expectation of what that means and should taste like. Minus 1 star for the bad sauce and another for the awkward soup. I hope ownership takes not and corrects these so I can come back and give the 5 stars I wanted to.

Small portion. This was $20 and 2 pieces were just bone

Will not come back. Not a good experience... took a chance cause the Google reviews were good but should have trusted Yelp. Not only are the portions small for their price but the food was just... ok. And ok is a stretch. The beef short ribs were $20 and you only get like 5 of them and 2 bone pieces. The tempura shrimp they don't make in house. They used part of the box to support the takeout. To they the shrimp were super dry and stringy. I know this was probably fried before the initial shipping to the store but it's like they made too many and then froze it and then refried it for me. Not good. Makes the batter soggy and the shrimp lose its structure. The veggie roll was OK but the ginger with it was dry and tasted like gingery-cardboard. It left a weird taste in my mouth. And why is the wasabi fluorescent green? I'm no expert on sushi but I know it shouldn't be florescent. The udon the tempura came with was good... until I found plastic in it. The noodles are soggy like they have been sitting over night in the broth also. Otherwise it's an OK udon. Just lacking salt and veggies that were not stale 0/10. Don't recommend

That was what the chicken looked like under the breading!!
    Jennifer T.

0 if I could. It was all old dried out tiny fragments of chicken. I took off the breading and ended up with about 2 bites of dried up chicken. There was even the knuckle pieces of gristle that were breaded gross..

Always a safe a solid choice. Consistent with their flavors and qualities. Sometimes the servers/service is a little wonky but I always finish my food.

I'm happy to say this joint is actually legit! I could see this restaurant thriving in Southern California as well. In fact, very few spots in SoCal offer so many toppings on a ~$16 ramen bowl. It's the norm to pay extra for bamboo and other veggies (and sometimes even spice), which Zen auto-includes in many of their offerings. Our takeout orders were packaged efficiently. I like how it's basically like an instant bowl ramen format, where the soup is in a bowl already, and the noodles and toppings are in a separate container above the soup. So you'd just need to pour the latter into the former to enjoy. My only criticism is that the spicy tonkotsu wasn't very spicy at all. If you told me there was zero spice in it, I'd believe you. But my spice tolerance is quite high, to be fair. Still, I'd def smash another bowl given the chance.

The interior feels refined and stylish, with soft lighting and purple accents that give it a calm, upscale vibe. Service was genuinely kind, attentive, and well-timed. The miso soup was deep in flavor, the seaweed salad fresh and nicely plated. The Baked Salmon Roll and Olympian Roll really stood out -- fresh fish, balanced flavors, and beautiful presentation. Sitting there to eat would probably be awkward with every patron passing behind you. We got the Paradise and the Hurricane rolls. The Paradise was good, but the Hurricane won hands down. Sweet and savory, crunchy and creamy, with a touch of spiciness, this was the complete package. Highly recommend. The bathroom is outside of the restaurant through a winding corridor of backrooms. It's unsettling, and then the restroom itself is lit in a sickly yellow. One of the motion-sensing faucets had its motion-sensor ripped out, and the sink drain looked like it had been dissolved in acid. Kinda weird!

I consider myself a bit of a sushi connoisseur (my husband just calls me "bougie" lol), so I figured we'd give this place a try since it was convenient and a sushi place for me to try. When we walked in, it was completely empty and there was a sign up at the entrance mentioning they were hiring servers. The restaurant seemed spacious but maybe it felt that way because all the tables were unoccupied. It took a few seconds before someone came out, but the girl who helped us ended up being the only saving grace of the entire experience. She was super sweet, told us we could sit anywhere, brought menus right away, and was on top of everything: drinks, appetizer, sushi, clearing plates. She was honestly the only person we interacted with the whole time. I did end up going to the register to pay after our meal, since she got busy once more people came in, but she handled everything she could really well. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the service. It was simply mediocre. The shrimp tempura tasted undercooked (I could still taste the batter smh). My husband got the Red Dragon roll and I got the Big Mike. He asked for no cucumber and they were accommodating. Regarding portion sizes, they're generous, and I can see how that might appeal to the general palate. I like that the rolls were cut nicely too, where the rolls were a little thinner than your standard piece, so they were easy to eat. The torched salmon and eel were probably the best parts of what I ordered. But overall, the quality felt pretty average. The rice was lacking flavor and kind of just tasted like plain filler. Our total came out to about $57 before tip, and honestly, it didn't feel worth it. Most rolls averaged $19, but they tasted more like something you'd expect at a cheaper spot. I've had similar sushi before that I'd consider more of a budget option (not amazing, but decent for the price). This sushi was passable but tasted more like $15 for a roll.. Just subpar for my standards. I think what made it more disappointing is that when I go out for sushi, I am expecting something better than what I could make at home (and yes, I have made sushi before with sashimi-grade fish, sushi rice, etc.). It is convenient to have someone cook for you, and good sushi is supposed to feel like an extraordinary experience. That's why I dine out at sushi restaurants but this just didn't hit the spot. Overall, amazing service, but the food was pretty underwhelming for the price.

There were a few patrons there, but it must have been a restocking day or something because some of their supplies were spilling out of the kitchen into the dining areas, so it wasn't a great vibe. I did like how they were playing regional programming on the TVs so we had something to look at as we ate, but on the whole, it might be better on the weekends when people are filling the restaurant and bringing the energy up.
