First things first, the atmosphere is fantastic, very calming music and fun cooking shows to watch as we eat. The service was extremely fast! And very nice to us! Lastly the food, it's not going to win an award but it's not trying too either. If you want cheap but quality teriyaki or fried rice come here! Also, a note, and the only reason I did not give a five. When making fried rice, the egg should be nearly as present as the vegetables and you should make sure that the rice is more fried than steamed. Despite that still delicious and would come back! Also make sure you order their gyoza every time it's so good! read more

I read the reviews before hand but my daughter picked this place for her birthday dinner so we went anyway. We got orange chicken with white rice, chicken teriyaki with yakisoba (just the noodles), egg rolls, gyoza, coffee bubble tea and strawberry bubble tea. The bubble tea was frozen? Like a slushy and very sweet, the tapioca in it was delicious. The tea was delicious. But was not like any bubble tea I have tried before. The orange chicken was nasty. The chicken was burnt. It was basically all breading, no chicken, and there was bones/cartilage/and tendons in it not to mention the sauce was very...gloopy! It didn't have much flavor either. The yakisoba was great, the white rice was good lol the egg rolls were burnt and lacking flavor. Just not a great meal all around. There are three teriyaki spots in Shelton but since my husband has tried this one in the past (and it had the best reviews and most pics on Yelp) I decided to try it as well. There wasn't a current picture of the menu online or website so we decided to just drive there to order to-go. We went on a Friday night around 6pm and it was BUSY! Only couple tables of people eating inside so mostly people there to pick up their take out orders. We ended up ordering the Bento box #1 (chicken teriyaki, shrimp and veggies tempura and California roll) and the General Tsao's to share. The chicken teriyaki and California roll were the only things we liked! The tempura was super hard (wrong batter for sure) and there was randomly two gyoza's in there which was strange. The general Tsao's was also not that great. I was pleasantly surprised about the California roll, I mean not the best I've had but pretty good given it's at a randomly teriyaki place out here. Happy teriyaki wok has yummy food. My wife likes it because she says it doesn't have as much salt and not as much sauce and it has good texture and it tastes really good because it's not as greasy as other places.. and they're willing to do no spicy hot sauce when she says she would like a zero for a hot sauce. I like it because they give you a good amount of food, especially for takeout. They always seem busy, and so this is the place to go if you want teriyaki wok in the Shelton area. read more

I had heard bad things about this location and new management but I was mostly pleasantly surprised. The decor was traditional and yet contemporary. The service was great, and we were greeted by kind staff members. The food wasn't bad either. Specifically, the Orange chicken was excellent as were the Gyoza, and Chicken Katsu. The Won Ton soup is in an egg flower base which needed just a tad more salt and to use a Chinese style won ton rather than Japanese gyoza dumpling, but it was still good as well. The only serious complaint I had would be the Teriyaki sauce itself on the chicken. The flavor was off. It doesn't quite taste traditional. I couldn't put my finger on it. It would have been a 5 star experience but Teriyaki needs to be the star of a teriyaki restaurant, and especially in Washington there is an expectation of what that means and should taste like. Minus 1 star for the bad sauce and another for the awkward soup. I hope ownership takes not and corrects these so I can come back and give the 5 stars I wanted to. read more

This place has gone down hill in the last 10 years. It used to be our favorite dinner out. I don't know what happened but the place smells horrible and all of the food taste the same. We usually order general tsos and sesame chicken, and both of them have had the same sauces the last three times we went which it absolutely should not be and the rice has been dry as can be. Mongolian beef ...was Mongolian onion.. not beef and what beef was there was obviously cooked poorly perhaps even boiled at some point. Teriyaki sauce was obviously fridge held for a long time as it was gelatinous and tasted old. portion for dinner was less than the cheaper lunch portions. No utensils no napkins. Will not come back. Not a good experience... took a chance cause the Google reviews were good but should have trusted Yelp. Not only are the portions small for their price but the food was just... ok. And ok is a stretch. The beef short ribs were $20 and you only get like 5 of them and 2 bone pieces. The tempura shrimp they don't make in house. They used part of the box to support the takeout. To they the shrimp were super dry and stringy. I know this was probably fried before the initial shipping to the store but it's like they made too many and then froze it and then refried it for me. Not good. Makes the batter soggy and the shrimp lose its structure. The veggie roll was OK but the ginger with it was dry and tasted like gingery-cardboard. It left a weird taste in my mouth. And why is the wasabi fluorescent green? I'm no expert on sushi but I know it shouldn't be florescent. The udon the tempura came with was good... until I found plastic in it. I really give this place a 4.5 star rating. We've dined here and ordered to go and I must say, the food has been consistently delicious. Always cooked to order, hot and fresh. The egg drop soup is delicious and I am not a huge egg drop kinda gal but this is so flavorful. I am a bit disturbed with the comments because I have visited this restaurant perhaps 6 times and the service and food have always been spot on. Definitely give this place a try. I walked in, in a rush to get to the forest before it was too dark and politely asked what was the quickest thing to make was and they said "chicken teriyaki," and I said "I'll take that" and then I sat, and not much longer after that the bowl came out and it was hooked up fat, and tasty too. Update, 1/13/25: Everything was perfect tonight. Spicy chicken and a baked scallop roll. Almost ate it all. I'm very full happy. Changed review from one star to four stars (side note: I changed the spice level on this order to one star vs. the two stars I originally ordered and mentioned in the initial review). I was so hungry and upset when I wrote my initial review. I knew I was coming down with a cold and I really wanted the meal because all I had at home was soup (that I had just finished shopping for, along with the Dayquil,Nyquil, and cough drops) which would have been fine had I been able to eat what I ordered. Frustrated and hungry is not a good combo for me. Being almost sick kinda put me over the edge. Anyhow, I called and nicely let them know what happened right away (before I wrote the initial review) and they gave me a credit that was good for 30 days since I live a half hour away and wasn't feeling well. I used the credit 2 weeks later, for the same exact order, and could not have been more pleased. So... please only take the next part with a grain of salt or two. We had a bad night. That happens everywhere from time to time and I try to give grace around that. ____________________________________ I have been here many times for carry out and always really enjoyed it. The only reason this review is a one-star review, is because of the service. The woman at the counter was very friendly and courteous, and when I called with my complaint, she handled it beautifully. This time, I also ordered pork and shrimp fried rice. I started with the roll. The rice had too much vinegar, or wasn't mixed well, and the scallops were dry and tough. It was inedible to me. So, I went for some fried rice. The rice tasted like a dirty grill, and the pork was teriyaki pork, which I was not expecting. At first, I thought it would be edible, but I didn't like it and couldn't eat it. I would not have ordered it if I had known they used teriyaki pork. So, on to the spicy chicken. Spice level is 2 out of 5. I always choose 2, because it's just right for me and it doesn't burn my tongue. Well, it was more like a 3. I could really feel the heat and it also tasted a bit like vinegar, almost like they added Frank's Red Hot Sauce, which I hate. I can't imagine they actually used Frank's, but whatever they did ruined the chicken for me as well. I never complain and I never write reviews, but this time, I'm beyond disappointed. I spent more than $50 and ended up not able to eat anything. I didn't complain about the rice when I called, since I thought I was going to eat it at first, so I was given a credit for the roll and the chicken. I was asked to bring the uneaten food back when I come to use the credit, even though I let her know that I live a half hour away and wasn't planning to come back into town this week. I'm disappointed at my experience at Happy Teriyaki on 06/05/23. My partner and I had a very good friend who worked at this restaurant. She was an amazing server with high quality customer service. She had quit her job here and the owners had asked her to please stay at least on Sundays. She stayed for Sundays. She was a dedicated employee and has since passed. We have not visited this restaurant since her passing and it has been several years. There are not a lot of dining choices in Shelton so we discussed it. Maybe instead of avoiding Happy Teriyaki because she didn't work here anymore (we felt it wound never be the same without her) we should go in honor of our late friend. We decided to stop in. We should have kept driving. First off, we had to order at the register and pay before we even sat down. I did not expect "fast food" service at this restaurant. I didn't like this. It was awkward. I have never had to order like this at this restaurant in the past. That said, perhaps they have issues with "dine and dashers" and I understand that. However, I had expected to come in and be seated, have someone come to our table and answer any questions, etc. (We normally eat at Blondies where they treat you like family and provide a great dining experience). I did comment that this method of transaction makes it difficult to leave a well thought-out tip. My partner ordered chicken fried rice and a root beer. I ordered honey sesame chicken, a yum yum roll and water. Waters were brought to the table, but no root beer. The chicken friend rice and honey sesame chicken came out quickly and I was impressed. The food was as expected. It tasted great. The yum yum roll came a bit later and was delicious. I had ordered it to be an appetizer but no biggee. Still no root beer. My partner reminded the server of his root beer which was brought along with a bill for over $3.00. Now, I thought I paid for the drink already. It was the first of two things that were ordered. She said that I only ordered two waters. No. I ordered a root beer while I was at the counter. Hmmmm....I did remember her asking if I wanted a copy of my receipt which I declined as I tend to trust folks a little too much. Our server provided decent customer service aside from the few awkward things noted. But, did she double-charge me for the drink thinking I might not leave a good tip? I will never know because I declined my copy. The whole experience was plastic, cold, stale and awkward. We decided we will never be customers here again. Tried it one more time without Sheila. Just not the same at all. The food was good, the service needs improvement. The ordering process is not for me. I like to tip and tip well. I base that on how I am treated during the dining process. I do not enjoy a forced tip before my evaluation time. I have no qualms with the food, albeit a bit pricey for the quality and type of food. It was good, possibly a bit dry, but tasted fine. The dining experience with tax, the extra root beer charge and the poor tip we left was just under a $50.00 bill. I could have went to McDonalds, received fast food service, a receipt, everything I ordered, for under $7.00. I will never dine at Happy Teriyaki in Shelton again. I hope my review helps the restaurant improve and helps the readers determine if you want to risk it or find a place where you might enjoy a better experience at half the cost. read more

Placed my order over the phone for pickup. Got there and checked my food and found veggies inside with the sesame chicken. I ordered it over the phone without the veggies specifically said no veggies in the honey sesame chicken. I told them about it and they took it in back and just pulled the veggies out. Which they still didn't do a good job of. Now I have lukewarm food that was made incorrectly. Would not recommend. Bad customer service. I don't know what's up with the bad reviews because I haven't had a bad experience at this place in the 8 or so years I've eaten here. I haven't eaten here in a couple years but I usually ate their sushi only. I didn't pack a lunch last week (7/24/20) so I ordered takeout. I just got the simple chicken teriyaki lunch combo with fried rice and gyoza and veg with a pineapple bubble tea with tapioca. My only complaint was the fried rice appeared to be barely fried with some soy sauce. It was good just not what I think of when I want fried rice. The chicken was excellent and the gyoza was average. The veg was basically just fried cabbage but good. The bubble tea is great. I got another takeout lunch order today (7/31/20) with Bento Box #1--chicken teriyaki, tempura, 8 california rolls, and white rice. The chicken, tempura, and california rolls were excellent. The tempura was cooked perfectly and consisted of potato, sweet potato, broccoli, onion ring, and two large prawns that were excellent. There was also two gyoza included. The california rolls were excellent like their sushi I had many times. My only complaint today was I asked for wasabi and soy sauce over the phone and when I got back to my office there was only a marble size of wasabi and one soy sauce packet. About enough wasabi for 3 cali rolls. As you can see from my pics that's a lot of food for that little bit of wasabi and soy sauce. For anyone wondering about covid they appear to be takeout only and require masks and signs say to distance. I have now given up on any decent Japanese/Asian food in Shelton. I hadn't been here in a while and was hoping for a better experience than I have had with Kobe, Happy Garden or Miako. I guess when there is nothing else available, you try what is there. Not any more. I ordered the tempura with shrimp. It was so over cooked with a very HARD batter. Tempura is not supposed to be like fried chicken. I couldn't even chew it. This was to go and I had asked for extra tempura sauce. The containers of sauce were not even a third full so there was not enough for the meal. We also ordered spicy chicken. The chicken was overcooked and very tough. very unpleasant to try and eat. Place an order to go but I'm actually eating part of it here. Beef udon soup, a spider roll. I wanted to try the sushi, and an order of chicken fried rice for home. I also trying their pineapple bubble tea with boba. I stopped into this restaurant on a Monday afternoon. I was immediately greeted and sat in a nice private booth. The server was very attentive without being annoying and was efficient, professional, and friendly. I ordered the chicken and gyoza plate which was served quickly. It was hot, fresh, and fabulous! It was presented very nice on a big square plate. The only down side was that the stir fried vegetable portion was TEENY TINY. I almost asked for more but filled up on the the chicken, rice, and gyoza. The prices were reasonable and overall I felt like it was pretty good for the money. This restaurant is not affiliated with the other Happy Teriyaki restaurants around Puget Sound. The atmosphere was pleasant with a little water fall/pond in the corner. I love the food at Happy T. However for some reason only known to the management, the front portion of the restaurant is piled up with crates of soft drinks etc and fenced off with chairs and tables. It appears they have rolled out the unwelcome mat to people who would like a nice sit down dinner. In my view this is a very poor way to run a restaurant. COVID is over! Get a clue and open completely for sit down dining and lose the stupid masks. Again the food is great and I will continue to get take out. I just wish I felt welcome to a sit down meal. read more

This restaurant has changed owners a few times for the last few years and it keeps getting worse. I stopped last week for a quick salad and I asked for the bill, I put a large bill with the ticket but, nobody came, so I got up to go wash my hands by the time I got back; they took all the money, got no change and when I wanted to ask for my charge back to give them a tip, everybody had disappeared, they treat adults like if we were little kids who make a mess. The owners were rude although the food was so-so, there is nothing to brag about it. This is a busy little place during the dinner time hours. It seems they have enough take out going through the door to feed an army! One waitress was stationed at the counter just to expedite and package the to go orders. I had the Bento Box #2. The sushi was fresh and of good quality. The tempura shrimp could use some work. The tempura batter is too dense and bland for me. The rice was decent. Now, the Chicken Teriyaki is what pushed my score from a 3 to a 4. It was grilled, then chopped, and served with the right amount of sauce over it. The chicken had a little crunch to the bite on the ends where there was a tab bit of char, which I like, and every bite was tender. I'm not a huge sushi lover so I'll probably go for the Chicken Teriyaki and try a new dish. The prices were reasonable. The service was, well, um home town friendly, if that makes any sense. I believe they should tweak the tempura batter a bit, or take the fried rice up a notch and this place would go from good to great! .
