We raised concerns to the teachers and administration about a pattern of homophobic, racist, and anti-immigrant language being used at school including, at times, during classroom discussions in front of the teachers and were told that the classroom includes students with "differing beliefs" and that our child, who raised objections in some of these instances, needed to be coached at home to tolerate this discriminatory language at school in order to avoid conflict with classmates. We repeatedly explained that our concern was that the language being used in class was not a case of "differing beliefs" but bigoted and discriminatory language that specifically targeted protected groups based on race, religion, immigration status, and identity and that allowing it to continue created a hostile and toxic environment for students from any of those groups. To this, we were told directly and in writing by the head of school, "If every classroom moment is interpreted through the lens of potential third-party offense, classrooms can quickly become places of controversy rather than learning." We decided to withdraw our child's enrollment in the middle of the school year because, after this response from the head of school, the behavior continued in the classroom and we no longer felt it was a safe environment. If your child or family is part of any historically marginalized group, we would not recommend this school. They are able to speak very eloquently about their commitment to diversity and their mission to ensure that no student is targeted, excluded, or harmed based on race, religion, or identity -- but when it comes time to demonstrate that commitment they fall very, very short.

We are also seeing positive behavioral changes with her at home. After only two months in the program, she is speaking about and demonstrating more physical organization. Being one of the older students in the classroom, she is also learning about leadership, and taking that home to model behavior for her younger sister as well. We are thrilled!

We absolutely love it there, and so does our daughter. The teachers are wonderful, evidenced by the almost zero turnover I've seen since we started. The Tadpoles app is a great way to communicate, and you know what they're eating/drinking, when they have diaper changes or use the toilet, when they nap and for how long, and receive photos and videos throughout the day. In addition to the daily Tadpoles updates, there is also the opportunity to sign up for phone calls with the teachers, email teachers directly, and there is a monthly meeting over zoom (recorded and sent with presentation deck after as well) to keep you updated on everything happening. They also make it easy to connect with fellow parents by sharing parent contact info, having designated WhatsApp threads for each classroom, and hosting social events (including adults-only events). I have also been impressed with the curriculum and amazing programs. This year, my daughter had music class, Spanish class, soccer lessons, and yoga lessons! She absolutely loves doing her yoga moves at home and telling me the Spanish words she knows! What I find most helpful though is the guidance and support on when and how to hit certain milestones, including support on starting solid foods, when to switch from bottle to sippy cup, when to switch from sippy cup to open cup, etc. Right now, my daughter is in the beginning stages of potty training, and her excitement for the process started because of the encouragement happening at school. He has always been ahead of the curve in doing things by himself, reading, writing... He also got through the G&T exams based on what he learnt at Sunshine. The principal, teachers and staff are professional, kind and really hard working - they teach kids to be independent, self reliant and confident. The center itself is very clean, hygienic and feels brand new (for the last 4 years). My only complaint was quick transitions from one class to another which brought in instability when my son was young. But it settled down when he turned 3. There was a high turnover rate in the initial few months but we have been seeing same teachers for the last 2 years and that makes us and our son very happy. WE HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH SUNSHINE AND EXTREMELY SAD TO MOVE ON.

Frankly, I can't believe that I am the first reviewer because most parents in the area know and respect the program. My son has been in the toddler program for nearly a year now (started at 15 months). He absolutely loves going there every day and he learns new things every day. The caregivers are very attentive, caring and knowledgeable. They keep great records and can give me a full report at the end of the day. There are three rooms with 1 and 2 year olds (8, 8,16 kids) and each room has a consistent head teacher. There are two classes of older toddlers upstairs. Downstairs they have after school programs for older kids. The location in Tarrytown is really easy to reach from the NYS Thruway, Rt 9, Rt 119 but it is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood next to a firehouse (they've taken field trips there). The building used to be a grade school and it has two fenced playgrounds as well as ball fields for the older kids. I love that the kids go out every day, weather permitting. They open 7 am and last pick up is 6 pm. The kids get hot breakfast and lunch as well as an afternoon snack. They also nap on cots and do some potty training. Many of the children are bilingual and the staff is very familiar with bilingual language development. They are also very attentive to kids that need special help, support assessments and have therapists come in during the school day for kids that need it. Having him here has really put my mind at ease. We couldn't be happier with our choice.

I received no response from the CFO (not even a denial of the request), which I think is telling. xxx Dear Mr. CFO, My infant daughter attended Explore & Discover from September - December 2018, at which point we pulled her from the program. I have dreaded writing this email because retelling this experience sickens me as a parent. I want to be clear that our early termination was forced based on the improper conduct of your staff. I am writing to request a refund of our $X,XXX deposit. My daughter had a tough experience at E&D. I was told at every pickup she was refusing to eat and yet the head teacher denied my request to come in and nurse her for meals (which is counter to what your Handbook encourages). I was also told at every pick up that my daughter was inconsolable and spent the day crying by the door, yet Head Teacher also denied my requests on 10/4/18 and 12/4/18 to come in to the classroom to help ease her comfort. Her responses ranged from "no" to "absolutely not". She denied me access even after I communicated that the director had agreed it was a reasonable request. As you know, this denial of access to my child violates Article 47 of the New York City Health Code as well as the New York State Day Care regulations. Frustrated by feedback that my daughter's distress was continuing (and having seen an increase in her anxiety at home - tantrums, hitting), I spoke to Head Teacher on 12/11/18 requesting classroom access again. She angrily responded that: - I had no right to enter the classroom - My daughter's poor transition to daycare was my fault due to my lack of scheduling, consistency, etc - My daughter likely wasn't a good fit for daycare - She could only offer my daughter so much comfort, she had other babies to take care of After this conversation, I reached out to Director and asked if we could have a joint meeting with Head Teacher. This was the third time I had approached Director about being denied entry to the classroom. I was told she had already spoken with Head Teacher and based on how well my daughter was doing, they no longer believed we had a problem and I would no longer need to sit in with the class. I found Head Teacher's report of my daughter's sudden turnaround alarming, given that it opposed what she had communicated to me earlier that day. Given Director's acceptance of Head Teacher's account, I could no longer trust my daughter's safety in the hands of your staff. As I explained to both the Director and GM, this is not an early cancelation as I attempted numerous times to make this situation work. I do not expect to be penalized for the bad behavior of your teaching staff and hope that you will agree to issue a full refund of our $X,XXX deposit.

I happened to be at the park today wa group of kids from the school also happened to be at the park playing. Please take a look at the photos. Ever since they got there, one of the teacher or maybe TA sat on the bench the entire time, and was on her phone constantly, even with headphones on! Really? The only time I heard her discipline the group of students was when she literally yelled across the park...she didn't even bother walking over to them. If she's a head teacher for the classroom, I didn't know head teachers can relax during open door play time...that's a first for me. A little while after, I caught the other two teachers were also surfing on their phones....I was really surprised to see all three of them were busy looking at their phones. Considering this school is one of the most expensive school in the area I would think they have the best teachers...well...boy was I wrong. Another school also happened to be at the park too, and those kids were much older however they each had an adult with them and they were extremely engaging with the kids. Don't believe me? See for your self. A month ago, the owner did reach out to me and to let me know that the teachers in the photos will not be returning to work, however...I still see one of the teachers in the pic at the school yard just a week ago...On the other hand, I'm sure this was a wake up call for all the teachers there to make sure to leave their phones behind while at work. Either way, my son will not be coming to this school.

We love the other parents in the program. My son was very underweight before starting and was not very verbal. We did speech therapy for awhile but it was school that made a massive difference. Since starting school full time, he's become a great eater and his speech has improved drastically.

They have very strict drop off guidelines, if you are a few minutes late you could be waiting outside for about 10-14 minutes even at below zero temperatures.
