I have not bought anything from a Harbor Fright in many many years after getting a motorcycle lift that broke down shortly after buying it but I needed to get some motorcycle chocks for a trailer and they had some with decent reviews so I just picked up a couple. One of the guys in the store was helpful, but the guy checking me out was kind of a tool, so I guess he is working in the right place here he can be surrounded by other tools. I don't recall having ever been to a Harbor Freight before. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. They even made suggestions on things that were on sale that day and helped out a lot. I believe I will be a repeat customer. They are higher than Walmart on a few things but I guess that's to be expected. Most things are extremely inexpensive. ( Summary for the TLDR crowd: Good store runs off loyal customers by not managing checkout.) Harbor Freight has changed a lot from what it used to be when I first started going there. Maybe not so many incredible bargains anymore; but balanced against some overall improvement in quality, so not necessarily a bad tradeoff. This is a really good store with many recent improvements. The interior is bright and clean, and the displays really draw the customer in. They have an incredible inventory; a truly comprehensive supply for DIY. Unlike many other stores that sell similar merchandise, it can actually be fun to shop here. The days of free items are gone, but if you follow the email ads closely, there are still some deals to be had. But what is driving me away from HF and back to Lowe's and Home Depot is the service, or lack thereof. And it's a training/policy issue- not the employees themselves. The issues are many, and I see no end in sight, so I frequently skip a visit to my used-to-be favorite store and head directly to the other guys. How doth ye fail me, Harbor Freight? Let me count the ways...... 1. No return process; the unsuspecting customer is consistently burned by getting in line behind someone who is carrying merchandise not for purchase, but for RETURN, which inevitably results in a spirited 20 minute "debate" while the line behind grows deep into the aisles, cutting off customers from moving about the store. It is a really, really uncomfortable position to be in, but why? Let's be real here- if you are selling tons of items that are of not the greatest quality, you can expect a high rate of return, so instead increase sales by speeding up the process, which means a dedicated return window/line, including a more experienced employee to expedite the process. 2. Extra Sales Pitches: Warranty: "sir, would you like to pay an extra 22% for this item for the chance to argue with us about the quality at a future date in this very same checkout line?" And don't get me started on the whole special discount club offers. These processes might, maybe, perhaps result in higher sales, but always, always at the expense of those lost souls in line behind, a few of which are going to let go of the items in their hands and walk. IT TAKES TOO LONG Call off the dogs and find another way to increase revenue- like, for example, making more sales by not running off customers who don't like standing in lines. 3. Registering Items/Signing up for emails: C'mon here.......set up a little kiosk; some electronic booth so that people can complete this sort of stuff for themselves rather than torture customers who are subjected to an address or name spelling lesson; heck, let 'em do it online at home, or in the car on their iphone- anywhere but in front of me in the checkout!! Print the terms of the sale on the ticket instead of giving verbal warnings like a 7th grade teacher; "If you turn this on, the motor may burn up." Also, let people just buy stuff anonymously if they want to instead of trying to be the reincarnation of Radio Shack. 4. Access to Items If you can't put every single item out on the floor for space reasons, could you at least have one or two out there so the potential buyer doesn't have to tackle an employee to get the goods? If you can't do that, could you at least make sure there is a floor model complete with sign saying the item is available and how to ask for it? This is especially frustrating during busy hours. You have interested buyers wandering the floor for an item they know you have, but cannot find. If you made it this far, you should notice that the bulk of the above issues are checkout related, yet oddly, not really related to the performance of the cashiers, who are doing as they are told. This is a really great store with some great merchandise and values, but HF has managed to convert me from a diehard fan to an occasional shopper. read more

bought a 400 dollar 27 gal air compressor 3 years ago.it blew up after 3 years. and of course no replacement parts available. never again. totally disgusted. now have to lug that big monster to the scrap yard. read more

Currently standing in a long line with only 1 checker. Watched at least 4 customers drop their purchases and walk out because of the long line. Finally another clerk has shown up, instead of asking those who have been waiting in line the longest to step over to the new line to be helped they allow those who have just stepped into the back of the line to be checked out first. To be fair I have seen this ridiculous practice in other places, but this was exceptionally irritating today. I looked for help to locate an item and there was not one other person within the store to ask for help but the clerk with the long line. Customer service is a thing of the past in this store as well as other brick and mortar shops...which is why I and others shop on Amazon. read more

Bought a Pick axe hand tool, Harbor freight advertises there hand tools have a lifetime warranty, So I took junk pick axe that I used one time and head came loose back for an exchange to a none defective one and they said they would not honor the warranty without a receipt but the receipt is non ledge able because there cheap printer ink disappears after a couple months so you can only make out the harbor freight logo at the top. I explained that its there exclusive brand and they still would not honor warranty for the tool. It seems to me that the Chinese warranty they offer, lasts only till you reach the door ? That's the last tool I buy from them. I hope it makes good business sense to them to lose a customer who spends over $1000 a year with them over a $25 purchase. read more

I've put up with a lot from Harbor Freight. I don't return tools with missing parts or the ones that are just plain junk. Let's face it, we go here for disposable garbage. The final straw for me is that I can't buy a toolbox. Period. I've driven 45 minutes with a trailer to find them out of stock, TWICE, online I can't ship to store and they won't let me pre-buy it and hold one day. I've recently started shopping the Joplin store and it's MUCH better. It's bigger cleaner and employees are actually helpful. Maybe Joplin will let me purchase my toolbox and hold it one day so I can pick it up without wasting a trip. read more

It's Harbor Freight, you are getting what you pay for. Though thankfully I've had pretty good luck with things I've purchased lasting a little bit before needing to be replaced. The items at Harbor Freight at a lot cheaper than items at Lowes or Home Depot, and rightfully so: they are generally not of the same quality. I have bought several tools from here and they have lasted me as long as I have used them. If you are going to use a tool every day or week, shop elsewhere. Otherwise for the occasional use, their tools are good. read more

I try to make it by the store once a month and add to my collection of tools. Ive been happy with the quality of everything i have bought so far besides any of the power tools. But for the price you will pay for power tools here its worth it if only doing a small job you need at the time and if you get more life out of the tool fine if not no worries to toss away.
