Many Americans are feeling helpless and yet wanting to help in the face of the massive, multiple…read moredeadly fires over the last week in Los Angeles area. When considering where to send my dollars to help I considered the obvious large non-profit organizations, such as Salvation Army and American Red Cross, but decided that I really wanted to support an already established local non-profit doing good work in the heart of the fire disaster. I found North Valley Caring Services as I researched these types of non-profits--they were the 2020 California Non-profit of the Year. There were many good reviews on other review sites, with most of the negative reviews from non-users of the services who were upset that the drive through food pantry sometimes caused a back up on the local streets and they were miffed at being inconvenienced. Among the services that I can see will be of value long term from the survivors of this fire disaster are: The Safe Parking program for people living in their cars or RVs "providing parking with onsite security, restrooms, showers, employment resources, and case management. Our participants have access to our child education and adult skills programs, job training, and dozens of outside agency referrals ranging from pet boarding to legal aid, housing and obtaining government benefits." The food pantry, free breakfast, free showers, delivery of hot meals to people living in local motels, and other essential services. I am proud to be able help financially support this non-profit organization in this good work.

I appreciated the community…read morethat was within the agency and that drew me to want to contribute to their mission, as I thought it aligned with my passion to help the undeserved population. Sadly, after a month of working, I witnessed a lot of disappointing behaviors and experienced within the agency a very toxic work environment. Once I realized the high employee turnover rate, I realized it was not worth my time and effort anymore to invest in an agency who's integrity is not genuine but a mere projection to feed the humanistic ego. After hearing the Executive Director ask a rhetorical question along the line of why he has to spend money on food for the agency's weekly food pantry, I looked at him and the agency in a different light. Prejudice was extremely transparent to me from the program supervisor. Double standard from some of the staff members were also very present. Nepotism was very present in the work place for control. I joked about "follow the money and you'll know the intention" and the higher ups panicked. Frankly, that is a red flag to me plus many other things that made me question what does go on behind closed doors. Please stay safe and be safe should you be a single mom or woman utilizing their safe Parking programs. My gut says something fishy goes on there.

He beat me, raped me, stole everything I owned and accused me of being worthless. I ran away from him, only to encounter several of his type on the streets. The workers at this shelter have been angels to me. I love them all, especially the manager, Kay, who is constantly busy and never says she is too busy to listen, my PC, Marilyn, who is setting the example of who I want to be more like, and Gloria, because she's a quintessential female badass. There are many great counselors here, who are helping me build up my self-worth, piece by piece. If they were among the King's horses and men, Humpty Dumpty WOULD be back together again. There are few male staff members, but they are all class and restore my faith that not all men should be considered sub-human. Our maintenance worker, Ricky, is here everyday and works very hard to make the place nice for us and always treats us with the highest respect and professionalism. I would give this place five stars, but the food is awful and would be much better if kitchen staff could prepare it, instead if rewarming crappy food a caterer brings. Also, there is a policy of laissez-faire, related to women stealing from each other, even though there are ample cameras to identify the thieves and subjecting them to termination. My abuser stole everything I ever got he could sell for a dime, so when these women do it, who I could physically stand up to for myself, it is a huge trigger for me, and I'm lucky the staff here has managed to diffuse my anger and redirect it thus far.

The hardest thing for me not many can guide you or inform you the people to take you to temporary housing and then permanent housing. Majority of people are not aware of the process it is not instant and takes time for myself and my brother it's almost a year and finding out people discriminate on the homeless whether it's a racist issue or stereo types it is sad we need kindness forward to try to make a little impact of a smile and saying good morning no one is better than other but the true kindness of the heart is priceless. Happy Holidays and always appreciate and thank God you are above being close to poverty you never know if that happens to you but be grateful.

With so many people effected by the pandemic, the state of the world, general health, the fires, the economy and wellness as well as the job market I've known/know many people who benefit from organizations like LAFH - who seem to be the most thorough, compassionate and active in Los Angeles. I've been lucky enough to help with on site gardening #greenthumb, homeless connect days, donation kits and even fundraising. I've connected with several staff, employees, security, affiliates and those seeking services and toured the facilities at their home base/main location in North Hollywood on Lankershim Blvd. I learn something new every week, and look for ways to be involved as well as encourage others to be involved.
