this is a smaller winery and gives a.cozy vibe that even if you are not a wine club member and just visiting, immediately feel at home. We were lucky enough that a wine maker was there manning the tasting room and he had lots of insight into how the wines are made. I won't spoil the story of how the winery got its name and why the wall paper, especially in the restroom is like it is but it's very fun. We didn't have any food but I believe they have cheese and crackers available for sale and an outside area during the summer. The tastings are generous and have names that are commensurate with the name of the winery. A do not miss is a port shot in a chocolate cup. Some of the best port I've ever had. read more

We made this our first stop in our Chrlan wine tour as our friends who frequent Chelan often said it was one of their favorites. We were seated outside and brought snuggly blankets to help with the chill. The inside and story is super fun with sex position wallpaper, corsets and lingerie hanging about, and generally a fun theme throughout. We ordered a couple tastings to split between us all and while we didn't purchase anything that day, our friends did! I mostly enjoyed the tempranillo and the husband of mine liked the white selection of their tasting menu. Overall a super cute place with a great view, good wine, and fun story. First off it has been a few years since I visited the Manson location of Hard Row to Hoe. The last experience was less than perfect due to the service performance of the staff. My most recent visit with my partner was better but unfortunately I still can't give more than 3 stars. The staff seems to be hit and miss depending on the age group you fall into. Some guests seem to receive better and more prompt service than others. Our service fell in the middle of this. Our server was for most part great and very knowledgeable about the wines but a little slow specially towards the end of the visit. At the end of the day Hard Row to Hoe has some excellent wines, bubbles and port but the overall experience is much better at the Leavenworth tasting room. read more

We did a wine tasking this past weekend at Hard Row to Hoe. Chelan area is in phase 1.5 with a state wide mandate to wear masks inside and if you are not able to socially distance yourself from others. Our server not only was wearing a mask, she asked us to wear one as well (we already had ours on). We signed in and gave our phone # so that if someone were to report a positive case, they could contact us. They had hand sanitizer at the tables and took ALL precausions when serving us our wine and food. We were also seated far away from other tables. The wine was amazing and the appetizers were yummy. A truly lovely place to enjoy some truly lovely (and organic!) wines with friendly service. Outside seating provides sunny and shaded options. I think that their indoor tasting room is open as well, but everyone was outside soaking up the sun on the day we visited. I love that Hard Row is environmentally conscientious and that they pay homage to the history of the area with fun names for their wines like Nauti Buoy and Shameless Hussy. (Don't miss the wallpaper and old photos inside as well!) The day's tasting menu included helpful pairing information as well as best timeframe to enjoy each wine. I don't think that there was a single wine we tried that we didn't all four enjoy. Special shout-out to the Pét-Nat that wasn't part of our tasting but which we came back for the next day after drinking a bottle at a friend's place. This is such a fun winery! The wallpaper is hilarious and the old photos on the wall are fascinating. It's also clearly popular - the place was packed on a Saturday! It's $12 for a tasting (5 tastes), but that cost is waived with the purchase of a bottle. I didn't end up buying any, but I did enjoy the tasting. The wines were all pretty good, and it was a nice mix of white and red. Minor annoyance: there's only ONE bathroom, and with as busy as it gets, there's constantly a line! read more

We visited yesterday and had an interesting time. The outdoor setting is beautiful and well maintained, the hostess serving us did a great job and was friendly. Unfortunately everything else was meh. The tasting is $12, which is on the high end for around here, and we've done close to 20 tastings in the Chelan area over the years. For $12 you get five very small pours, less than half a glass of wine total. Pretty lame! Also the wall inside that would have a view has no windows so that was a bit of a letdown and to top it all, they have no seating. Standing only, which on a quiet winter day just doesn't make sense. We left feeling quite ripped off and went for a free tasting down at LCW which included free cheese tastings - much better use of time and money imo. read more

Review without spoilers I'll not go into the interesting local history that informs the heart of Hard Row to Hoe Vineyards because it is fun to hear them recount it and introduce the characters involved. And let me admit I didn't taste a full flight because I was the driver for me and a friend. But I did try the sparkling wine, "Good in Bed", and it is terrific, every bit as good as any of the sparklers across the lake at Karma, and at a friendlier price point. My friend insisted I try the innovative vermouth, and I was surprised and impressed. The complexity is fascinating, and I'll buy a bottle the next time I'm in town. It will make a great aperitif. This is probably my favorite winery in the Chelan area...... such a cute story and great tasting wine. I have visited several times and the wine tasting is always a great one. This visit stood up to the reputation, the server was great telling us about the wines and carrying on good general conversation. This was my second visit and I was very excited to take friends and show them this really neat winery with a great history. Instead we were treated with such disrespect and bluntness that I'm amazed that with service like that they're still in business. First stop on our wine tour last weekend. Wines are acceptable but if you're not over 50 or part of their wine club, expect to be overlooked. We sat there, a group of 6 of us, with empty glasses after our first taste while the staff welcomed others in and gave them their first and second tastes. Hard Row to Hoe is an absolutely charming spot for wine tasting in the Chelan/Manson area! A very personable woman winemaker and cute little shop make this winery unique, but it's the wine that will make the experience truly memorable. I went recently with a group of girlfriends and we had a great time talking with winemaker Judy Phelps, who was just as engaging as she asked us about ourselves as when she discussed her wines and told the scandalous story of how the name "Hard Row to Hoe" came to be. No stuffy, pretentious wine snobbery, just great wine and good conversation. We went in the dead of winter, when the small tasting room felt warm and cozy, but I imagine this would really be a fun place to visit in the summer, when you could stroll through the vineyards on site and hang out on the deck. read more

Went to Chelan to do a little wine tour this past weekend and Hard Row was our last stop. I have to say, we saved the best for last. It is a little ways out of the Chelan city area but if you make the trek out there, you will not be disappointed. Watch for the pointing finger, or you may drive right past it like we did - oops. Upon pulling up to the tasting room, you may be wondering what you are getting yourself into...but once you walk around you will instantly see the charm. And that is the number one way I would describe this place, very charming. Make sure you ask for the history lesson of the winery and then all the decor and theme will make sense. It was the sassy little winery and the staff were such characters. Like most places out there the tasting is $5 or by a bottle and forget the tasting fee. I was a big fan of the Pinot Noir and my boyfriend loved the Cab Franc, so we got a bottle of each. Definitely loved the Nauti Buoy (Naughty Boy yes that's right) too. Loved this place so much I am thinking of joining the wine club! And to those reviewers who had bad experiences in terms of being turned away, I can understand that the situation may not have been handled in the best manner, but the tasting room is VERY SMALL and if its a busy weekend it would probably be miserable to be in there anyways especially if it is hot out. So if you have a larger group, you should really give the winery the courtesy of a phone call heads up and perhaps scheduled an appt to avoid a rude and awkward situation especially since most of the wineries there are small, its a pretty general rule of thumb. read more

I came last summer and looks like I forgot to submit my review. The only reason I give two stars instead of one, is due to the fact that the wine is great. I can't say the same for the employees and the fact that I have to jump through hoops to taste the varietals I enjoy. If I have to pay for a tasting Id prefer to taste a wine I may like to buy. Will not be returning. Usually when a wine has a fun or silly label on it you immediately think this wine is going to suck, but the label is fun. With HRTH that is not at all the case. You get a quality wine and an awesomely fun story to go with it. We visit this winery a lot as my mother in law is a wine club member. She might actually move in if there was room for her;) Their cab franc is incredible as is naughty boy. Go in and look closely at the wall paper, do some tasting, and listen to all the great stories. THE best in Manson. Don and Judy make fantastic wines. Their staff is wonderful and very accomodating for small and large groups. Most times when we are there, we bring our own picnic to enjoy in their outside patio. They have a fun game out there that we play as well.
