A few years had escorted me through a labyrinth of unrelenting and tremendously heavy physical and emotional stress - multiple serious illnesses and injuries, some coincident with life combined with heavy losses of various types, and some a direct result of fluoroquinolone (Cipro, Levaquin, etc) toxicity. When I first walked in, I was on a cane daily, had not been able to sit down at all for any reason for several months, could barely breathe, could barely talk, mental noise broke decibel warnings, and it took focused concentration to cross a city street. I was probably clinically depressed, but didn't bother getting a diagnosis. An x-ray showed my lower discs were degenerated to the point of bone on bone. A top cardiologist diagnosed me with pericarditis. My joints were inflamed and my muscles were so weak I couldn't stand at the sink to wash even one spoon. I'd recently suffered a bad concussion and just two years before had had my second case of pneumonia. Those are the highlights; there's more but to carry that much as if nothing is wrong (which I HAD to do because it was just me caring for and supporting myself, and which I could do because I worked remote) sounds impossible and unbelievable - but it's all true. I excelled at publicly running my body like a puppet and keeping most people at a sufficient distance so they wouldn't guess something was up but the fact is, I was in such heavy pain & misery for so long, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was because I'd seen up close the devastation such exits create and didn't want to contribute to that. But everyone has a limit. I needed help or else - desperately. I had been a fan of acupuncture for years though it'd been a long while and the expense had deterred me from seeking it out as a routine treatment sooner. I was thrilled to discover Johanne right in my neighborhood, and that she was offering her service on a community basis, ie very affordable in exchange for sharing the treatment room with other patients. I was concerned about privacy in a community setting but it took me exactly one treatment to get over it. Harlem Chi is an extension of Johanne herself: embracive, safe, compassionate, filled with hope, and effective help. The major difference between Johanne and other acupuncturists - and this has kept me going to her even now that I'm barely in New York, when I have to travel hundreds of miles to see her - is this: Every other acupuncturist I've been to could produce a positive effect lasting about 2 days, but then I'd tank again, even without Life introducing new elements to my condition. Maybe if I saw the other acupuncturists 3x/week for an extended period, I'd have gotten to a stable place, but I couldn't afford to find out. Johanne's affordable treatments produce positive effects on me immediately and sustain - no dip, no feeling worse, nothing I could excuse as a detox reaction or a rebuilding reaction or whatever, and the stable improvements only grow from there. (By the way, I highly recommend getting treated by Johanne 2-3x/week when dealing with chronic illness, acute but serious conditions, or simply high mental stress. And do expect to let your body rest after each treatment and as much as possible in between.) Johanne's quality of service is such that, especially in New York, she could easily get away with charging twice or five times what she does - and prior to her, I'd visited acupuncturists that do. But she's kept her session prices to around $40/each, less if you buy in bulk. Went to this place and tried acupuncture for the first time ever. I didn't know what to expect. But Diana was great and really took the time to listen and speak to me about my ongoing issues with my body. When you get there you fill out a long form, questionnaire about yourself/health. It takes a bit so get there earlier. After speaking about it with her you enter a big room with the beds and comfy seats. Wear something comfortable because I didn't. You have to be able to lift your sleeves and pants up comfortably. You then pick a bed and the acupuncture starts. There is soft music playing but I chose to listen to a podcast. It is definitely an experience your first time. For example I'm very sensitive and in tune with my body (I feel everything) so I felt the needles. But don't worry some of them you don't feel as much. Such as in my ears, face-I rarely felt those. But the one in my leg I def felt and if I moved it slightly my whole leg could feel it! Before she starts get in the best position you know you can stay in for an hour. You have to relax as much as possible. Once the needles were in I was deathly afraid to move. You can move slightly I was just afraid to. So for the first 20 minutes I lay there stiff. Then I relaxed some and fell asleep before I knew it. I woke up like where the heck am I lol I kind of felt like I was in a daze but I was also reeeeally tired that day so I wonder how it will be my second time. Now I went because I have all over body pains in random spots. I didn't have great expectations but I thought I'll go with an open mind and heart. Can I just say I felt great after the session was over and I kid you not this shoulder pain I was having before the session-I haven't had it since and that was 2 weeks ago. It's super weird. My leg pain has subsided since then as well. I do still have some hip pains. But I just think that was crazy. I was having random shoulder pains for a few weeks prior to that. Anyway I will continue to go and see if I improve more =) I think it was around $78 my first time with debit card. After the first time it's less. Fantastic! I was on my way to LGA for a flight, with some time to kill -- when what did I see but a street sign for acupuncture. "I could go for some acupuncture," I thought, and so I did, then and there. And, I didn't regret it, for my experience was superb. Not only was I taken on-the-spot, literally from off the street, but my therapist was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable (and she obliged my request for some specific points).
