My brother can along and we had rooms next to each other. Upon arriving my brother went to unlock his door and the door was already open with the safety lock left between the door jam. My husband and I went into our room and one of the beds looked like it had already been slept in!! On the top covers and the sheets under! So we both slept in the other bed and it was broken! Worst night of sleep ever! In hindsight I should have gone to the desk and asked for another room!! But we were tired! So I let the desk know the next morning, especially telling them the first bed needed attention and fixed asap! I was told "sorry" with a lack of concern!! This used to be one of THE NICEST hotels in this area! Sad to say it is no more!

I thought it was funny that they have a sign with towel prices due to the "popularity" of their towels...which are just basic white hotel towels. I think what they're trying to say is that 'this is how much we are going to charge you if you steal our towels'. I'm usually a Marriot/Hilton/Sheraton/Hyatt guy, but I was totally fine staying at the Raine, and I'm staying there again in a couple weeks. And this time I might even try the on-premises restaurant, because the popular local steak restaurant I went to last time didn't impress.

Definitely the grossest motel room of our 4000 mile cross country trip - possibly the grossest we have ever experienced. Where to start? Air conditioner leaks water on the carpet and obviously has been for a loooong while. Carpet is disgusting and reeks. Room is dirty and everything is old and worn. The single bar of soap in the bathroom was not wrapped and clearly had been used. Towels were old and thin and one of the washcloths provided to us was so stained and worn that I think it was actually a cleaning rag. On a row of nonsmoking rooms and still had to put up with smoke secondary to the motel operator's decision to put smoking areas RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE AIR CONDITIONERS. There's a table and a single upholstered chair that is so smelly and stained it should be burned. Smallest television we have ever seen in a motel. Kicker, it's mounted so high on the wall and far from the bed it's unwatchable. This place is absolutely awful.

There is a friendly NPS ranger who was available to answer questions. She said that the area gets pretty busy during the summer, but when we visited during the shoulder season there's fewer people. She discussed things to do in the area which was helpful. There's a corner that acts like a small gift shop, although items are a bit limited. That's ok though since you should really be spending time outdoors instead of looking around inside!

I've been staying at Sunny Brook every July for a few years now. It is run by a very friendly…read morefamily. The "patriarch" is Roy, who likes to tease visitors. If you are tent camping here, there is a small indoor bathroom & a couple showers inside the big office cabin. Concrete floors & homemade walls though - this is not a hotel. (you're camping, duh!) At night you have to use the outhouses. There are also a few supplies you can buy (ice, t-shirts, batteries, s'mores kits). In the morning, they load up the coolers, tubes, & canoes into an old school bus. They'll tell you funny stories as you drive up to the put-in. You'll drive past elk & some other cool stuff. If you want to do the short day trip, you'll get out at the bridge. For the long trip, you'll go all the way up to Smith Falls. Make sure you hike up to the waterfall before you put in! As you float down the Niobrara River, you'll know you're getting close to camp when you pass Fritz's Island. Then the twin daughters of the family will help pull your tube ashore. One warning: If no beer is a deal-breaker, then you'll want to find a different outfitter. They're pretty strict about no alcohol here. Of course, there are a few places along the river to buy beer if you're desperate. This is a great retreat for families or groups of friends!

The campsites are nice - we like the ones along the river. We enjoy visiting with the owners and playing a game of checkers with Roy. The shop's bathroom is preferable to the outhouses but that goes along with camping :) The owners are very helpful and provide great service for river trips (1 day/2 day . . . canoe/kayak/tubes) Last year we took our kids for the first time (12, 10 and 8) and they loved it. We are going back in a couple of weeks for this years' trip. Highly recommended for families. We also stayed in the cabin above the office one night when we were just passing through. It provided what we needed (there were 11 of us). A couple of kids slept on the couches and we did make use of the showers downstairs in addition to the bathroom in the cabin. The view can't be beat and the price was reasonable.
