Admittedly, it's been several years since I last patronized the Harmony Inn, but I enjoyed the experience every time I went. It's a historic site in the small town of Harmony, PA where I attended high school. As a point of reference for anyone not from the area, it's about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh. The Harmony Inn is not just an old house-turned-hotel-turned-restaurant, but is also locally famous for being haunted. Now, I personally don't have a definitive opinion one way or the other on the subject, but I admit that it is an attractive factor! I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to go to dinner in an old inn that is certainly not decrepit, but supposedly brimming with old spirits? That said, the menu is really quite unique. They have classic American faire, but also focus on two other types of cuisine: Mexican and German. The German I get, because Pennsylvania has a rich German-Polish heritage and the neighboring town of Zelienople was founded by Germans. But the Mexican? Color me puzzled, but I've sampled both types of food there twice and I liked it. I remember they even used to offer Rocky Mountain Oysters (which are definitely NOT seafood) on the appetizer menu back in the day around 2000 or 2001, but every time my Dad tried to order, they were out. At any rate, if you find yourself in Western PA looking to eat somewhere unique to the area, seek out the Harmony Inn. read more

Everything is great except the wifi. I called in advance to make sure they had it, but when I arrived to have a beer, dinner, and (key words) get some work done, it was terrible. I was stuck in Butler all day and had a four-hour break. NCBC was closing early so I came here, knowing it was the same owners. Please fix the wifi... Young professionals work remotely and like good beer to accompany the monotony of the tasks that give them the resources to drink good beer. Thanks!! UPDATE (2-12-16) I got the following private message from Bill B. today: Nothing angers me more than people who give restaurants poor ratings for things that have nothing to do with the food or service. WiFi does not deliver your food nor does it cook it. As far as WiFi, you go there to eat not to use your computer. If WiFi is what you're looking for, go to Starbucks. It would have been a 5 minute drive for me, but I like North Country Brewing and I chose to make the drive to Harmony because I could patronize the sister establishment of one that I already like that happened to be closed (I've spend many an afternoon eating and drinking at NCBB with a laptop doing work). A restaurant (or any business for that matter) is about an experience. If you have an open wifi network and tell your customers such when they call, then it should work. If I hadn't called in advance and shown up to broken wifi, then this review would have been 4 stars. Shame on me for not checking in advance, right? I mean, if you read my review, it starts, "Everything is great except the wifi." And, everything was great except the wifi ... and the fact that I called before arriving to ask about it. Went with out of town friends for dinner this past Monday late afternoon. Had a truly great time! Beer was terrific as were the entrees. We ate on the patio and thanks to another yelp review saw that we could take our dog. First time we ever did that and it added a lot to the experience. Can't wait to go back. Haven't been here in years and we were looking for a place to have a beer and some dinner. We chose to sit in the bar - which is a preference we normally have. Service is nearly always better. So it was here. Beer selection is pretty good although I give most places demerits if they have more than two lite beers on tap. If you're drinking lite beer, you shouldn't have more than two choices. As an aside, do yourself a favor and check the calorie counts. It's not worth sacrificing taste for the minimal difference. They did have some good selections including Full Pint Chinook IPA (my choice) and Smithicks (my wife's choice). Menu is broader than in the past and now has German selections, Mexican as they always had and some traditional fare.. Prices are good and service was quick. My wife ordered jaeger schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. Very good and recommended!! I chose less wisely with the veal Parmesan which was thick,tough, and grisly. Yuck. The side of pasta was inconsistent and under sauced as was the veal.. Had to search to find the sauce at all. I would avoid this dish entirely until they realize that veal has to be pounded before cooking. Every decent restaurant knows that. All in all it was a decent meal - I just made a poor choice. I'll give them another chance cause the bar atmosphere is pleasant and the prices are quite good. My real rating is 2 1/2 stars. Go for a beer and enjoy the place. Had a wonderful dinner this weekend at the Harmony Inn. Lured by historical and ghostly tales of a haunted establishment, I excitedly came here to experience it for myself. The restaurant encompasses the entire inn consisting of two levels, with tables and private dining area scattered throughout different cozy nooks. The decor is rustic, casual, and romantic with dim lighting to set the mood. There is a lovely out door seating area with a fireplace and appears to be a lively spot for summer gatherings. The drink menu came with detailed descriptions for each option - much appreciated since I did not have to ask the wait staff which red wine was the sweetest! We all shared the skewered scallops and pretzel to start - kudos to the spicy mustard dipping sauce! Followed by lightly breaded cod with sauerkraut and cabbage- delicious! Advise washing it all down with a baileys coffee and apple dumpling. Definitely plan to come back here in the summer time! read more

Very nice smokey flavor and not tough it was done just right. I usually do not get that kind of quaulity in smoked meats when I dine out, but this seems to have been one of the best Briskets I have tasted in awhile...the larger chain restaurants seem to forget (low and slow)... Stopped here on the way home after attending a play in Pittsburgh. My parents had heard favorable views and decided to give it a go. We arrived around 5:15 on a Sunday for dinner. The hostess sat our party of four in a section that already had a 10 person table that had yet to order. Because of this, it took ages for us to order drinks and food. We sat there for probably a good 10-15 minutes before our server came to our table to order drinks because he was taking the (rather lengthy) orders of the big table. He was running back and forth like mad for this table and I feel ours (and the table of two people in the corner) felt the brunt of that. We had been sat at the same time as another family of three (they were in a different section). By the time we received our food, that family had already ate and were leaving. I checked my watch and we had been sitting for about an hour before our main dish came out (we didn't order an appetizer) because our section had to wait for the food of the 10 person table to be served (as per most restaurant rules: first in, first out). The wait wasn't the part that displeases me but the fact we never received an apology from anyone regarding the length of time it took to receive our food. We weren't in a hurry by any means, but it would have been nice to have been given some sort of understanding when we would get our food. As for the food, mine was decent. The garlic green beans weren't very garlicky (would have been better if they had been sauteed rather than sprinkled with minced garlic) and the Henpeckin' chicken I had was acceptable. My mom said her sandwich (something Jamaican inspired) was amazing. There was definitely some timing that needs to be assessed here. There really shouldn't have been this issue when the restaurant wasn't extremely busy (no wait to be seated, etc.). read more

Decided we had to try somewhere new. We were on our way home from the outlets and opted to try this gem. The worst thing was trying to find parking. After we got parked and got inside, it was all good and the parking issues just melted away. We were greeted by a hostess who asked us where we wanted to sit. Oh, the choices. Inside downstairs, inside upstairs, outside downstairs, or outside upstairs. We chose up and out. It was beautiful. A little rooftop patio over the front porch. Lovely. We got the pretzel app. Their pretzels were, oh my gosh! I got the kiss of salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection, not overdone. Yippee! I got the German potato salad and the potato pancakes as my sides. Just terrific. The only downside was the pancakes were a little greasy but I was expecting that. The hubby got the Jagersnitzle which he loved! And his sides were spaetzle and spaetzle. It was all terrific. The dessert, my dessert that I ordered stole the show. Their blueberry strudel and ice cream, holy cow! Fantastic!!!! The hubby chose the fudge brownie a la mode which was good but not as good as mine. We will certainly visit again. I have had a great time at this brewery during my first time being in Pennsylvania! I came here to visit my sister who lives in Slippery Rock this past weekend. We came to Harmony Inn for lunch/dinner around 3-4pm after we spent our entire morning snowboarding. We were all so hungry and super sore from that! When my sister first told me that we were going to eat at a place that is semi-haunted, I was intrigued immediately. Being from a newbie in Pennsylvania coming from LA, I have been super excited in learning all about the history of this state so I couldn't wait to go check out this brewery myself. When we first got there, we came upon a band who is going to perform live there. That was already an interesting start! Then we were led upstairs to the dining area to get seated immediately. We got our menus and I was happy to see all those options. However, I was unfamiliar with many of the food items because I believe they are Germany cuisine. But I ordered the Drunken Fishe anyways because fish sounded good. I got a side of French fries with that since one free side comes with it. I also ordered Peach on Peach cocktail with this meal. Both were delicious and completely satisfying! When the fish sandwich first came out, I was very surprised with how large the portion was! At first I was worried it would be tiny and not enough for me. But I was definitely taken away by the large portion when the food arrived. The cocktail was also so good that I could drink all at once! But of course..I didn't since I wouldn't want to be too drunk that I couldn't enjoy my food now right haha. Okay. We went to the North Country Brewing (NCB) restaurant (same owner) in Slippery Rock and it was great. Great food, atmosphere, and service. Harmony Inn did not have the same quality, it was just okay, if not a little less. The interior was great, vintage. But the food was not as good as NCB and mixed drinks were off. The server was friendly, but not skilled. Check your bill, ours had extra charges, which seems consistent across other reviews. If you want to try NCB beer selection with great food, then go to the Slippery Rock location. read more

This place seriously has the worst service!!! We waited 30 minutes at the bar just to get a drink. Then we asked to be seated outside. We waited for an hour and a half. Then it started pouring rain. Our server never came over to move us inside. The server for the next table moved them right inside to a table. When we went inside and asked they said we would have to wait another 45 minutes. First time back since the new owners took over. Friday December 18 place was averagely busy. Sat in the Bar area. Bar tenders were great- friendly, quick and your drinks were dry when you made the decision. Ordered food to go however, there was a miscommunication with the kitchen staff, our food took a long time and was cold by the time we received. Manager was on top of the concern and was extremely generous and very courteous while addressing. Minus the fact the food was cold. (Order Buffalo wings, Ruben, and the Holy Cow) after reheating - it was fabulous. Had the Jack Frost Winter Warmer - quite tasty. We are definitely looking forward to our next visit. read more

I'm not impressed with this place's food. First off, I have never eaten in the main dining room because I can never get seated by a hostess or server. That's a story in itself. So I have eaten at the bar, giving the place 3 tries. The bar is cool and a fun place to enjoy adult refreshment. But the food is just, meh. I have had the Jaeger Schnitzel, the Steak Sandwich, and I don't even remember what else. The Schnitzel was ok, but the German Potato Salad was horrible, just cooked potatoes with some sort of unimpressive sauce on it. The Spatzle was very flavorless and bland. And the Steak Sandwich was so dry, I had to have a couple of beers with it to get it down. Hmmm, maybe they do that on purpose. But anyway, looking forward to the onset of Spring weather here as I'm told the Bier Garten is great. But I won't be eating there. Update 12/23/2013 - the Inn is temporarily closed while new owners gut and renovate the place. The new owners are reportedly the owners of Northern Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock. Hmmmm, that was one of the first places I went to after moving here. Great beer, terrible food there, too. This place is a great stop in a sweet, historic town in Northwestern, PA! Harmony Inn not only has great food, it also has a really cool history. First of all, the place is owned by the owners of North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock, PA; an all time favorite place of mine. Because of this, they have North Country beer, which is absolutely the best craft beer. I mean, it is the first craft beer I've ever loved, so nothing will ever top it. A favorite is always the Firehouse Red, and if the Slippery Rock Dew is on tap, don't pass it up! It is brewed with loads of honey and it is just so drinkable! Today I got the Harmony Reuben, and it was delicious! They were able to make it (mostly) gluten free for me because they have a ton of gluten free bread options available. I am not entirely gluten free, as I like to drink beer at times, but if I can avoid gluten-bombing my stomach when I go out to eat, I like to do so. Luckily, Harmony Inn makes this an option! I also had the fries which were just heavenly. The house salad was perfectly made, too, with delicious homemade ranch dressing and super fresh greens. The menu is full of unique German style food options as well as American pub-fare. And as for the history- the place is one of the top haunted spots in the area. Downtown Harmony is a quant historic town and Harmony Inn is the highlight. The food is very good with a large selection of choices, particularly if you like German food. The old home converted to a restaurant/bar provides the perfect atmosphere to have a relaxing dinner, lunch or just drinks and appetizers. Hardwood floors (with authentic "squeaks" so you know they are the real If the weather is nice (which doesn't happen often enough in Western PA) try the large outdoor patio, the front porch or balcony. Harmony has been around longer than the automobile so street parking can be a challenge but they have some parking behind the restaurant and there are a few municipal lots within a short walk. read more

Love this place! Actually considered one of the top haunted places around! I've been here 3 times. The first two were mainly to see music and drink from there awesome selection of craft beers. They have some pretty love tasting beers too! First thing I ever ate there was called the Ploughman's Platter which included: Black truffle, wild boar and spicy salami presented with sharp white cheddar cheese, bleu cheese, crackers, ginger snaps, pepperoncini, honey comb and our famous Ploughman's mustard. This was delicious and the meats are made locally as well! Had this little treat on my first visit! This last time I went we actually just came for dinner and I was not disappointed! We ordered the Goat cheese pillows (Goat cheese nested in puff pastry with roasted green onions and spinach, flash-fried and finished with a strawberry and port wine reduction.) for the appetizer then our dinner sections were Shrimp and Bacon Spaetzel: Shrimp tossed in garlic butter with bacon, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, spinach and homemade spaetzle; and unfortunately I can't remember the other. The goat cheese pillows were light, airy, and crispy. It was filled with warm gooey goat cheese. You got three on a plate though wanted just one more . Now my Shrimp and Bacon Spaetzel was spectacular! I could not stop eating it! One of the tastiest things Ive had in a while. Only thing I can complain about is I wish it was packed with more perfectly cooked shrimp! Now for the other entree that was ordered. It was a weekend special they offer which was slow roasted beef and you added sides with it. My dinner partner opted for this selection. Sorry I can't remember the name I just know it started with an "S". The beef was cooked nice and tender with a gravy/sauce covering it. I will be posting a picture of it though. I would've given 5 stars if it wasn't for our experience with the staff. The host was not kind and the waitress not any better. She began the night by not introducing herself and when the wine we order was not the one we asked for she responded with attitude after we said we would keep the glasses she gave us and pay for them just if she could just give us the ones we asked for and was seen throughout the night rolling her eyes after leaving out table or just blatantly at us multiple times after the one incident. We tried to be as kind as possible to her to make sure she knew we were not that upset but nothing changed her attitude. Enjoyed late lunch early dinner there this afternoon. Strongly recommend the pretzel appetizer, but it will fill you up, so keep that in mind when you order your entrees!! I had Wiener schnitzel, and the side dishes definitely out performed the main dish. The entree breading was quite greasy and both I and my date tried several bites of the entree and neither of us could say for sure what the meat was under that crust. It really didn't look like veal - it was way too pink, and it didn't really taste like veal either. It wasn't gamey or spoiled or anything like that, just somewhat of a mystery meat.
