How wonderful to be close enough to walk to dinner. This is in a fabulous shopping and dining area of Southside near the Hot Metal Bridge. We opted to sit outside on their covered patio because it's so nice out even with the rain. They have ceiling fans and removable window coverings. If you look down you can see a lower level of picnic tables and a white tent, maybe for events. Our waiter, Tyler, took good care of us this evening. He helped us choose our beers and took our orders. We feasted on Metwurst (for me) with beer cheese spatzle and sauerkraut. So delicious. Hofbrahuhaus is an easy choice when you want German food in Pittsburgh. They have tons of seating, the food is good and the atmosphere is unique. We enjoyed sitting outside on a nice evening. Love me some Schnitzel, and the pierogis and potato pancakes are delectable. You can ask for a side of both apple sauce and sour cream. We walked here after the southside flea market. I strongly debated between one star or two. The reason for the two star rating was simply because our server was one of the most genuine, attentive, and kind human beings I have ever encountered in the service industry. But his kindness aside, the food at Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh was extremely disappointing. We ended up dining there while visiting Pittsburgh for dinner one evening when my dad, my husband, and I could not agree on a place to eat. My dad and I have been to the original Hofbrauhaus in Germany, and I knew that this chain would be a hit or a miss in terms of the quality of food. It was definitely a miss. To start, we ordered a giant pretzel and beer cheese. The pretzel was rock hard and the cheese was cold. We also decided to try the pierogies which lacked any real flavor and were extremely non-descriptive. For my dish, I ordered the steak Jaeger spatzle while my dad and husband ordered the classic veal schnitzel and spatzle. We all felt that the food was extremely bland and lacked any authenticity. So if you are looking for genuine German food, this is not the place for you. I would highly recommend going somewhere else to get your German food fix. read more

We stopped by on a Tuesday night around 6pm and it wasn't too busy. There were a handful of families there and it looked like there was someone making balloon animals for the kids. The inside is very spacious with tall ceilings and large tables, perfect for big groups. Everyone we interacted with was super nice! We ordered a variety of dishes to try. I will note, the food is pretty brown for the most part and it's almost all heavier items. However, all of it was pretty good! I enjoyed the pork shank, it just fell off the bone. I also enjoyed the sampler platters they offered so that you could try a little of nothing. They also have flavors you can put in the beets - I enjoyed the blueberry in the lager! read more

If you go to Hof for a more chill night, I'd definitely recommend grabbing a table in the beer garden out back. It's on the water so has a nice view, and they had a German band playing for Oktoberfest (the band is there other nights as well) which was fun! Enjoyed coming here again. It was my girlfriend's first time. Had to have a lager and giant pretzel to start. The bier cheese and mustard were great for dipping but you could still taste the pretzel. We also had fried pickles but I forgot to grab a pic. I had the Bavarian Jägerschnitzel, which came with warm potato salad and cabbage, and she had the pirogies. We both really enjoyed them. The potato salad had a great sweet and warm vinegar flavor. The schnitzel was cooked well. The pierogis were pillowy and tasty. This is my second time eating from here and they didn't disappoint. We had a large take out order of potato pancakes, a kid pizza, sausages, and schnitzel. For a fun night in the burg, I recommend going to their outdoor beer garden, where seating is first come first serve and you order directly from the bartender. Hofbrau brews their own beer onsite and has a monthly keg tapping for their specialty beer. If you go, I recommend getting there early as this event is very popular. German food can be very heavy... for something lighter I really like their salads, salmon entree and hefe weizen beer. read more

We had the spatzle which was really good, the combo sausages (around $20) which was nice to try the different types, a salad (had to get the veggies in somehow), and the large pretzel to share. Overall all the food was really good. The sausages were just a tad saltier than I'd like but still really delicious and the sauerkraut was the best I've ever had. The salad wasn't anything unique but it was large and had tons of vegetables which was great. The pretzel was also yummy and the 3 dipping sauces were delicious. So good! We stumbled upon this place checking out the south side of Pittsburgh and were glad we did! The Bavarian atmosphere is wonderful, our service was spot on but the food...the food is outstanding! Our first course was beer. I added the blood orange to my Hefe Weizen and it took it to the next level. The blueberry and raspberry additions are good, but the blood orange has to be my favorite. Then we had the potato pancakes and pierogis. Both were perfect! And let's bring on the schnitzel - we had the Scnitzel Weiner Art and Yaegerschnitzel. Both were perfectly breaded and flavorful but the mushroom sauce is out of this world. Add their amazing spatzle and cabbage to either plate and it's the perfect German meal. First off, I called the restaurant for parking support and the hostess stated that they can provide a parking discount for the recommended parking garage. This was a huge false statement and when I asked the restaurant, they denied the comment even thought my wife also heard the statement. So, I've lived in Germany and this was not as good as I was expecting. I've eaten at several other German restaurants and this was basic food. Many other places provide a larger portions and ever a choice of two German potato salads, the hot or cold, from the two regions. The inside was a large facility which would definitely support an October festival atmosphere. Definitely a beer drinking joint. I'm also appreciative that this location offers a military discount and although I had mentioned my military service to the server, I still had to ask for it. Came for restaurant week promotion. My outdoor server was excellent! The meal itself had highs and lows in the 3 course menu for $24. The bier cheese was great but the soft pretzel was dry and stale. The wurst platter...meats were cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely. The sauce beneath them was so complex but not nearly enough for 3 wursts. The spatzel was fine. Low on seasoning as most of the flavor came from the bier cheese. Potato pancake cooked perfectly but also lacked some seasoning. The Bavarian cream puff was excellent! As a big craft beer person, I love the liter and half liter options but not a fan of having to ask price points as they are not listed in their website or paper menu. This was a great place for a larger group to meet as the tables are kinda big, emulating an "Oktoberfest" type of vibe. Service was wonderful from the bartender as we waited for others to arrive to the waitress who took care of our party of 9 (not "no" in German, but nine people). Everyone enjoyed their food and beer and conversation. Many ordered the schnitzel and some had the Wurst platter, which is like having a sausage party in your mouth! Me, I ordered the Hot Brown which is a great dish. It's similar to a Turkey Devonshire but this version had beer cheese on it. Yum! I also got a side of buttered spatzle which always hits the spot.
