Many people have such wonderful experiences at this location. Unfortunately, last fall, I did not. I found much of the staff, specifically the owners, to appear distant, disinterested, and lacked awareness. While many of us are emotional when we enter the space, I found it rather sad that I had no introduction the first day. I had no idea who anyone was. There was not even eye contact from the front desk when I came in lost on the first day. Perhaps two of the team members properly greeted me which was lovely. But I quickly learned that the welcomes and departures are seldom celebrated in this program. Some of the staff were not equip to deal with confrontation. If you are working with a vulnerable, emotional, and recovering populations, I expect better accountability, deescalation, guidance, and resolution. Shying away from uncomfortable, but important topics like racism and a*sault need to be addressed appropriately and thoughtfully. I'm not expecting perfection! I think I wanted a warmer, kinder environment where the team was attentive and caring. I hated feeling like another statistic running through their program. It was a wonderful group of participants at the time, but the faculty single-handedly made clear that Harmony Place would be the opposite place for healing. One last note is that the entire Harmony Place Monterey lacks diversity in staff. I think this was a large con as well. Dr. Schwartz and the other therapists at HPM, Harmony Place Monterey, have helped me tremendously. I underwent 6 weeks of their PHP, Partial Hospitalization Program, 6.5 hours per day, 5 days a week, in September and October of 2021, followed by 4 weeks of IOP, Intensive Outpatient Therapy, 4 hours/5 days per week in November. I learned the core elements of CBT and DBT, also how to understand, process my childhood trauma and to manage my depression and anxiety. The Core Group Therapy sessions and Men's Group sessions gave me important development to recognize and cope with emotions. This development and semiweekly and weekly one on one therapy sessions with Dr. Lee Larimer truly achieved dramatic benefits. I continue to attend Dr. Schwartz's biweekly alumni sessions, as well as psychiatric appointments at CHOMP Behavioral Health as needed. Most recently, after 18 months on the waiting list, I have a personal therapist at CHOMP. All of the HPM staff made me feel welcome. They communicated their roles well and executed flawlessly. My professionals, therapists and their aides were excellent, deserving of recognition for excellance all, but particularly Mana Godbole, Lee Larimer, Megan Williams and Mark Schwartz. Harmony Place Monterey made me feel safe, a huge accomplishment. They gave me an excellent opportunity to learn, grow and heal. It's been 6 months since that 10 weeks of intensive therapy and I'm doing very well, incredibly well. I no longer take psychiatric medication and I am making constant strides to create healthy social relationships. My depression and anxiety are well under control and getting better and better. My personal counselor also contributed immensely to my healing through the use of EMDR; a therapy I highly recommend for those with PTSD and childhood trauma. I was driving near Harmony Place recently and felt a wave of nostalgia. I was there nine months ago and still feel like I have family there. I'm also still in touch with many of the other clients I overlapped with. I had bottled up so much emotion and pain that I hadn't cried in forty years (including my teen years). The counselors and staff are wonderful and set a tone that allows for a great deal of self study and sharing. If you're ready, I highly recommend HP. When I started at Harmony, my mental health was at its absolute worst. It appeared to be a godsend for me. I learned so many techniques to help my depression and PTSD and actually started doing a lot better. After about a month in the program, a few others and I were threatened by another client and Mark and Lori decided nothing was going to be done about it. We talked to our therapists and went through the right channels and nothing helpful happened until I was about ready to quit out of fear for my physical safety. People outright yelled and sometimes even screamed at each other or verbally attacked one another and it was other clients who typically stepped in instead of those trained to do so. There was no guarantee of when you would see the psychiatrist and my appointments were consistently delayed. They always had unhealthy meals and snacks. Since there were also people struggling with eating disorders at this facility, I asked if we could have some fruit and was always given the runaround. Never happened. New policies included wellness checks by police if you were late even if you weren't a suicide risk, but on the other hand if you missed three times without them "permitting" you to, then they kicked you out of the program. Even for important reasons they agree are in the best interests of your mental health. So I definitely began to doubt that they had my best interests in mind. There were a few positives however. Michelle was my therapist and if she worked outside of this program I would love to continue the work we had started. She was the first therapist who truly saw past the high-functioning part of me to the part that needed help. Additionally, Ariel at the front desk was possibly the most caring person out of anyone else in the whole program. I genuinely feel like I'm worse now than I was before I went to Harmony. So whatever you decide, proceed with caution. read more

As a Retired Disabled Army Veteran I have been in Mental Health programs at the VA since 2011. I have personally been treated for my military service connected PTSD, Depression, Chronic Pain, Core Self Cognitive Distortions weekly. Recently I had opportunity to go through intake and treatment at Harmony Place Monterey. I went through the Intensive Occupational Therapy Program (IOP) Trauma treatment raging from core self beliefs, self negation, compassionate self, fight or flight, and Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorders and the Pre and Post distortions from reliving these assaults just to name a few! I found my Therapist and the entire staff their to be extremely competent and knowledgeable on traditional and ground breaking treatment modalities and schemas for sustainability of improving the desired recovery outcomes. In particular I found core groups, one on ones including EDMR sessions to be utterly transformative in my personal recovery and systemic treatment. Harmony Place Monterey - Preparing for Wellness and Mindfulness Workouts October 2019 - Counseling & Mental Health Near Me - Monterey, California

The name Harmony Place is ironic considering this is one of the most unharmonious places I have ever been. Before I begin let me say that this review is based on my personal experience and is not meant to invalidate those that have been helped. There are skilled therapists there and people have had their lives changed, including myself, but the ethics of this facility are highly questionable. If you are a simple minded sycophant who enjoys emotional exhibitionism and stroking the ego of narcissistic doctors then this is the place for you. Otherwise, beware. Mark and Lori's personal clients get highly preferential treatment, however if you are a client of one of the other staff members then you will be marginalized in favor of the "VIP" clients. While Mark and Lori are highly skilled therapists with a wealth of knowledge and experience, their ethical behavior is abysmal. Mark has a track record of letting his personal biases interfere with his therapeutic approach. Lori, who happens to be his ex student and ex wife can be incredibly cold and unprofessional, especially when she bickers with mark during group sessions. The staff can be incredibly vindictive and contradict all that they preach if you find yourself outside of their favor. Doctor Goldman, the prescribing doctor, is NOT a psychiatrist. You will be prescribed psychotropic drugs by a doctor who barely understands them and will at times invalidate your experiences or expect you to construct your own regimen. My personal therapist Josh would gaslight me and make passive aggressive insinuations that I did not belong there, and accused me of exaggerating my symptoms for some unspoken agenda I could not decipher. I am active duty military and one of the PTSD incidents I experienced and sought help for was a comrade of mine attempting suicide right outside my door. I was told that because I didn't have a close relationship with that individual that I shouldn't be affected and was ignored. I felt so incredibly invalidated. I expressed desire to have my father come in for a session, which he acted as though he agreed with me and offered to call my father. He used that phone call to undermine me and tell my father it was unnecessary to come in. My entire time in the program I felt as though he just believed I was there to get out of the military like I'm some kind of malingerer. Doctor Goldman recklessly prescribed various mood stabilizers for my bipolar disorder and the side effects were intolerable, but my attempts to communicate this were largely ignored. The main symptom I experienced was overwhelming exhaustion. I was a zombie and couldn't stay awake during groups and was chastised for this, despite my constant efforts to communicate this issue. Half the patients sleep during groups, but I became singled out and humiliated by Lori in front of the other patients for it. I was then given two days notice that I was being dropped from the program. This is right on the heels of a psychotic break I experienced where I was highly suicidal, as a result of doctor Goldman forgetting to send a refill to my pharmacy and I experienced dangerous withdrawal, but they acted as though I intentionally went off my meds and I received no apology. I was devastated as I had so much more to process and work out. I attempted to meet with Mark to plead my case, but he declined. My final day I was shunned by the majority of the staff, and if it weren't for the support I received from other patients I would have fallen apart. Multiple patients even went to their individual therapists and expressed objections to my discharge but were told not to talk about it. During my time I saw other patients break rules left and right. People pissed hot on drug tests, had sex at the residential house for inpatients, vaped in groups, argued, etc. But apparently my experiencing side effects was unforgivable while all those infringements were ignored. Mark also operates under highly outdated gender-based views that I had to correct him on multiple times. He is also seemingly transphobic in my opinion. He constantly misgendered a trans client, publicly. The client used they/them pronouns but was disrespected constantly by Mark who insisted on male pronouns. He even went so far as to say "first you're bi, now you're trans, what's next?" And asked them if they wore women's underwear. This is NOT a safe space for trans and non-binary people, beware. I will say that as a gay man I did receive respect and fair treatment in regards to that, but was horrified at the way he treated trans people. While I did make progress and was given some very strong tools to help with my recovery, I feel devastated and set back by the nature of my discharge. My abandonment issues are now severely triggered and I feel as though I have taken a step backwards. I would not recommend this place, as the ethics need strong intervention. If you are considering Harmony Place, be cautious. read more

I had the good fortune of having Harmony Place recommended to me by my Lyra Health coordinator. This was after they researched several places in California. I went through Harmony's PHP and while I was initially concerned about my ability to benefit from the program, I couldn't have been more wrong. They are loving, caring, skilled professionals who help you do the deep work to move towards healing from trauma and years of masking our emotional pain through addictions and other unhealthy behaviors. PART 1: I originally started treatment at HARMONY PLACE in Woodland hills, CA to get me sober. I realized I couldn't do the heavy work until I got my substance abuse under some control. So I did their 30 day program with a one week extension because I didn't want to leave the first place I'd ever felt SAFE. Fast forward to being approved to go to HARMONY PLACE MONTEREY. I was instantly welcomed with non-judgement and compassion from Garret, and Jessica who both made the whole process and transfer as seamless and easy as possible. The first person I got to see every morning was MANA who is a Godsend and was everyones north star at the program. When I had arrived there was so much sadness and anxiety inside of me that screamed for my attention, but all I was doing was running away from it. At HARMONY I learned how to lean into it with my entire being. Everyday was a new and different experience with new challenges to face. I acted like a detective in my mind, asking questions to deeply investigate and discover the source of my problems. MARK and LORI introduced me to the IFS model which stands for Internal Family Systems; the underlying concept of this theory is that we all have several parts living within us that fulfill both healthy and unhealthy roles. Life events or traumas, however force us out of these healthy roles into extreme roles. Some of my extreme roles are The perfectionist, the people pleaser, Mrs. defiant, the Inner Critic, the Procrastinator, the manipulator, the lazy one and so on and so on. This model was the perfect one more me. The team and IFS taught me SELF-AWARENESS and how to take RESPONSIBILITY for my actions. I also learned to allow the self to take on a leadership role. They taught me how to take care of myself and have SELF-COMPASSION and this is coming from someone who didn't know how to be an adult. I could not trust myself to make any decisions for myself. I had been recklessly pushing my body and mind with dangerous excess when I had finally pushed myself too far. It was during 2021, after another night blindly focused on the pursuit of escape and pleasure that I found myself on the floor, thinking my heart was going to explode. I was both scared I was dying and embarrassed that i'd let myself get to that point. I was lost. In working the program I reduced my anxiety and depression, improved my relationships, and allowed myself to hone in on my problem solving skills. Every group felt like my very own THERAPY session. From COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIORAL THERAPY with MEGAN and MICHELLE, learning that when we come to terms with the negative behaviors we've developed over time that limit our happiness and well being, we realize that we need to intentionally build new habits with HEALTHY COPING SKILLS. CORE GROUPS with MARK and LORI where I was able to go deeper with any and all of my problems. ATTACHMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS in which MARK and LEE focus on early attachment and/or Trauma, neglect issues from past and influences on self-schema. FACING SHAME and EXPRESSIVE THERAPY with LORI were to very transformative groups! Learning that shame can impact the trajectory of someones life. I was feeling like at my core I was a bad person. My shame was linked to feelings of unworthiness and low self esteem. I feared exposure and was worried that others will reject me when they see my truth. Everyone there reminded me that I am not a bad person and that it is safe to speak my truth, drop my facade and be my authentic self. The whole team, literally, the entire team deliver their knowledge, experience and talents in a way that is caring, compassionate, and clear. When you get to the root issues of what isn't making you feel whole, then it's time to start learning how to treat you mind, body and soul. You have your alone time along with so much therapy and group sessions. We had THERAPY three times a week which is unheard of. You really have a profound opportunity to build a well rounded relationship with every therapist there. Under Harmony's care I was able to comprehend, believe and accept how desperately I needed help. I felt incredibly safe in their hands. I honestly had no idea who I was before coming here. It's an ongoing journey, but today I have a healthy sense of self. I know what I like and what I don't like, I show up and am present for my life today. I have discovered new and old hobbies. I used to be a chameleon, being whomever I thought others wanted me to be. Today, I have my own opinions, style, and perspective. One of the most important things I've learned is to set boundaries. Learning how to identify what I will and will not tolerate, learning how to say "no," is a profound act of self-love. I had an insightful experience at Harmony Place Monterey. I felt very supported by the staff and also felt that when I voiced concerned they were listened to and change was made. I would recommend this type of therapeutic intervention to anyone that may be ready for it. I come back here whether I need a quicker "check-in," or to deal with longer intensive treatment for my ever-since-I-can-remember depression, and as with so many other people here, life traumas (so if this sounds like you, then welcome, you're not alone). I've come back here several times because it feels like home. There is a tremendous sense of safety in the peer community here, something vital to your own therapeutic process. I have just completed my longest visit here, and I am already missing my therapy family. The staff is well versed in a variety of mental health issues, offering special areas of focus in a mental health track, an eating disorder track, and a chemical dependency track, and you are placed depending on where you need the greatest help; there is also access to a dietitian, psychiatrist, and of course individual psychotherapy several times a week. They also offer free access to bimonthly aftercare meetings, so if you are local, you can still have access to friends and alumni; if needed; this also includes the Friday bipolar groups. read more

I attended Harmony Place for about three months last year and I would highly recommend this program. I cannot say enough great things about Harmony Place. They say your toughest day here is your best day and that is definitely the truth. If you put in the work, you will yield the best outcomes for your mental health. I will not lie it can definitely be a tough program and working through past traumas is not easy in the slightest. However, I have never felt more supported and heard than at Harmony Place. I got to work with Noah for my individual sessions and I really clicked and was able to feel comfortable talking about anything with him. Noah helped me process a lot with my family and my relationships with my family members have never been better. I really appreciate the time both Mark and Noah put in with my family sessions. Even though my mental health will never be "cured" so to speak, I have so many tools under my belt to help me and I can't thank HP enough for teaching me all these skills and helping me develop a new way of thinking. I was a client at Harmony Place Monterey from March 2020 to November 2020. I have been in and out of eating disorder treatment centers for almost a decade, and I have to say that this facility is the best I have been to. The genuine compassion, respect, and understanding from the staff here is something I have not experienced anywhere else, and I am truly grateful to have spent the better part of this year here. Bonnie and Michelle in particular are both excellent therapists; I highly recommend them and credit them for my ongoing recovery. The most helpful aspect of my treatment here was the trauma work. Never before had any of the myriad of mental health professionals I have been subjected to in the past have ever addressed the root cause of my eating disorder and suicidality, but now I am able to understand why I developed these debilitating thoughts and behavior patterns which has enabled me to use coping skills to curb them. Harmony Place of Monterey is the first safe haven I found in my entire life. simply put they saved my life! Words can not describe the amazing and consistent highest quality care clients receive there. if you are dealing with cronic depression, anxiety, PTSD, an eating disorder, or drug and alcohol abuse issues THIS is the place you want to be at. Harmony Place has helped me more than words can actually describe. I was severely dealing with alcoholism and had no idea where to turn. I googled where I could possibly get help after years of failed attempts to quit drinking. Finally I found Harmony Place. From the first phone call I was met with someone who genuinely seemed like they cared about me. It was scary asking for help, and heading into treatment for the first time, but the transition was very smooth and they were in constant contact before I ever even arrived. My first day there was nerve wracking to say the least, but the friendly and welcoming staff really made an effort to make feel welcome and at home. Once I actually started the program I found that I had a really great mix of group work, as well as one-on-one time. All of the counselors and Dr's have been helpful and approachable. The difference in my life has been obvious to myself and this around me. If you were like me and don't have the slightest clue where to even begin seeking help, give Harmony Place a call. I was struggling for over 15 years to figure out who I was. I came here and learned that who I am, my true Self, was already within me, and I had to learn how to connect with the parts of me internally. It was through being here that I learned how to be emotionally independent, but honestly one of my most difficult struggles was being patient and not rushing myself for something I wasnt ready for. Our family has had incredibly positive experiences at Harmony Place. Mark Schwartz has been professional, supportive and insightful. His individual and couples therapy techniques have been beneficial for personal growth as well as strengthening family relationships. He asks the hard questions and gives his clients the space to reflect on what are often difficult answers. He's able to help identify issues while maintaining a safe space to be vulnerable in, which can be very difficult to achieve. I credit Harmony Place for saving my life during the hardest year I could ever imagine. This year I was faced with the worst crippling depression, anxiety, eating disorder behaviors, and suicidal ideation admist a pandemic, and hence the stress became unbearable.
