I was at this bar this past weekend and my experience was beyond terrible. Besides for the $30 charge to get in, I was kicked out for saying a racial slur. Which was not at all true. I asked the security guards multiple times what I did wrong and instead of hearing me out, they just kicked me out. When again I did not at all say anything racial. I waited a few minutes in the line at the bar and made it to the front. I then stood there for 20 minutes while the bartenders ignored half the bar. I asked if we could order drinks on the side I was on, which was met with eye rolls from the bartender who spent the next few orders ignoring us again. When I got in line on the side of the bar where the bartenders were actually addressing customers, they continued to take orders from anyone except me. Someone walked up after I had been standing at the bar for 25 minutes trying to order and said hello to the bartender. Then the new customer took a phone call. And the bartender came over to interrupt their phone call and get his order instead of the people who have been waiting for nearly half an hour. When I pointed this out, he laughed and wouldn't take my order. I've never seen a bar staff so dedicated to making their customers experience bad. They are overpriced, rude, and can't seem to keep a clean bar. They charge a cover without having live music or entertainment and there is always an unknown layer of liquid on the bar and the floor. This was our first time trying Harpo's and our friends said it's kind of pricy but let's try it. Our friend is a vegetarian and they had no options for her besides the bean dip, so she ordered that. What we received was a plastic cup of watery refried beans and a small amount of chips. The rest of our party ordered the pulled pork and the pork nachos. The pulled pork sandwiches weren't bad but in my opinion could use more sauce, the nachos were topped with cold queso and pork, no other ingredients. For the price, it's not worth it unless you're looking for a place to go once you've been done drinking on a weekend. Definitely not a great place to take the family for a dinner. read more

This was THE WORST experience I've ever had in Columbia. Harpo's is known as a "you've gotta go" spot in town, so we were excited to check it out! However, once we arrived and paid our $5 each cover, we were handed our menus are were told to seat ourselves. After sitting down, I realized my shoes were practically stuck to the floor with how dirty/sticky they were. We tried to look past these few things but once we waited over 40 minutes, wasn't acknowledged once by the waitress, watched the 2 nearby tables get served multiple rounds of drinks AND food, and finally having the waitress practically place another tables food order on our table so she could pass it out, we left. We asked for our cover back given we got literally no service and was just handed our $10 without any sort of apology or recognition. New menu is awful - What are you doing? This WAS a quintessential college bar. Zero points for a terrible menu change. This WAS Mizzou's quintessential college bar. While the ambiance has remained, someone decided that this place needed to become a Hot Dog/BBQ/Taco restaurant- great idea, NOT. Liked cheese curds - gone, liked quesadilla's?, how about a hamburger? Fries? Nope, that's gone too. The waitress told us it was a change in the "kitchen manager" though by the "Bud's Grill" logo prominently displayed on the menu, my feeling is they are basically using the smoked meat from Buds (lord only knows who eats there, I tried it once and was wholly unimpressed) to slim down the menu to, you guessed it, pulled pork & smoked chicken tacos, sandwiches & salads. Wow!, you guys really put a lot of thought into that. In my opinion, if those sad examples of an in-house made tortilla chips (which are served with ZERO salsa) are actually fried in-house, as you so prominently state, I am the Pope. If the upcoming completion of the expansion has you left with no choice but to outright eliminate all palpable food options, perhaps don't sell food, as me and mine I will not be eating anymore, so be it, but look at what you have chosen to do to a college tradition that cannot even offer a hamburger or fries. Being Bud's #2 is not the answer. People can walk the 2 blocks for that, though it doesn't seem like anyone does as it is perpetually emptyt. They tout the "Game Day" menu on the ridiculously minuscule new "menu" which has traditionally been a truncated version of the regular menu. I'm terrified this will further degrade what is now an abomination. So my old self strolls up into Harpo's with my colleagues after the disaster that was the Fieldhouse. Right off the top this place was light years better than the Chad-bro fest I just departed. To my surprise, although I was raising the average age in this jawn by at least a couple years, there was a DJ actually spinning Hip-Hop and EDM. The beer was cold, and the patrons were enjoying themselves. Harpo's is your stereotypical college bar. On one hand, if you go during the day when it's less busy, it can be fun. The drinks are cheap and decent; however, it is not a clean establishment. Your shoes stick to the floor and it seems to be managed by college-aged men. To make matters worse, if you're there anytime after 9pm on a weekend or busy day/game day, you will not be able to move. It quickly becomes a mass of people (which is not fun at all if you're claustrophobic in the slightest). So I thought with COVID, it would be responsible for support local business and contribute to helping them stay open! However, the food I received was way over price for the quality. My jalapeño poppers were $6, to only receive 3 - all of which were burnt, one even having no filling and was even more overcooked than the others (as seen in photo). I also ordered the loaded fries, which included way more fries than toppings - and more jalapeños/onion straws than pulled pork. Not bad during the summer or during the day any time of year. Mostly chads and sorostitutes any other time. Truman's would be a better choice if you're seeking television for sports and drinks in the evening during the school year. They do have a fun Thursday night special. $0.25 8oz. draws of lite domestic beers. You order the beers by the tray from your waitress in $5 rounds (that's twenty beers, mind you). If you can drink $10 worth of beer in under 3 hours, you're doing pretty good. The best strategy for taking advantage of this special is to arrive early, like around 8PM or so, and get a table. You'll need it to hold on to later when the room starts spinning. read more

My wife and I were in town for the Mizzou game and decided to drop in to Harpos for our NFL fix before heading back home. The menu was much different than I remembered, and featured a number of BBQ related items. Normally I shy away from BBQ at any place that isn't already known as a BBQ joint, but when I overheard some employees talking about the new smoker installed on the roof I decided to give it a try and I'm very glad I did. Our meal broke down as follows: Chips and Salsa - both were pretty good. Chips were nice and crispy and not too salty, the salsa had a little bit of kick to it which was nice. Smoke House Turkey - Nice smokey flavor in the turkey and the gouda cheese/chipotle mayo went well together. The bacon on the sandwich was decent but was a little to maple for my taste buds. Chopped Brisket Sandwich - this was a pleasant surprise. Brisket was tender and had a nice smoke profile while the sauce was kept to a minimum - just enough make sure the buns didn't leave to dry a taste in your mouth. I'm truly shocked to find this kind of BBQ outside of KC. Whoever the pitmaster is they definitely know their way around a smoker. This sandwich needs a little more brisket though, I think they'd do well to tack another dollar on the price tag and give you more meat. I was told that they would be adding more BBQ items to the menu in the coming weeks, including my BBQ gold standard favorite, Burnt Ends. Too bad we didn't show up a week or two later I would have really liked to give them a try. On the BBQ sandwich front, I think they're the best Columbia has to offer. read more

I know Harpo's as the home of trivia Wednesdays. Their trivia night is pretty decent - they have a local radio celebrity reading the questions. I like it because the questions are moderately difficult, mostly pop culture related but also historical -- but nothing completely obscure or impossible. You can win free appetizers or gift certificates. The drink specials end on Weds. at 6 pm, just when the trivia starts, so that's a bit of a bummer. Still, the non-happy hour prices aren't bad - $3.00 for Blue Moon on tap. Although my waitress was seriously the biggest ditz. I asked her what she had on tap and it took her a while to remember, then I asked her how much the Blue Moon on tap cost and she had to go ask. Nice enough...but come on. We had lunch at Harpo's during the MO State Wrestling Championships. I WOULD NOT recommend this place!! Our server was very nice but the food was AWFUL!! We ordered burgers and a grilled cheese and all the buns and bread were burnt and hard to eat without scratching your mouth. I've been to Harpo's twice, the first time mediocre, the second time abysmal. We ate dinner both times on the rooftop patio, which is the only plus of the place. Food is ok, but certainly not worth the long wait and infrequent check-ins from servers. Last time my fiance and I went there, we placed our orders before the table next to us sat down. The table was all college kids who were friends with our server. Guess which table got their food first? Oh yeah, she also plain forgot to put our order in at first, so we at least got free beers out of that. Her excuse was that they unexpectedly had a school reunion group of 40 come in that evening, and management had only scheduled 2 servers for that shift. First of all, really? A scheduled reunion of 40 classmates didn't think to make reservations with the venue they printed on probably 100 invitations? Secondly, even without the surprise party of 40 management only scheduled 2 people to cover the Friday dinner shift?? Or maybe there were other no-shows? Overall, unreliable service and apparently incompetent management. It'd be fine for JUST drinks on the roof, but even then, I'd rather not give them any more of my business. read more
