After years of tolerating Christine's pissy attitude I decided I had enough of her. This is a…read morefamily business and I try to support family businesses when I can but there is a limit to how much attitude and blatant disrespect I am willing to overlook. More often than not when I went in the store I was ignored by her until she decided to speak. There was never a "Hi how are you doing", or "Hello can I help you", it was always just her looking at you and expecting you to just speak. Never a pleasant friendly conversation. If anyone else was working there I usually tried to avoid her but that wasn't always possible. My business there was to have my riding mowers repaired for things like sharpening blades and belt replacements. For the most part the repair work her husband did was good. He was the worker behind the scenes. I did have a situation where the belts on my zero turn mower kept breaking. After the 3rd time of taking it to Harrington's for this same issue, I took it to the place where it was purchased and was told the belts were breaking because the pulleys and bearings needed to be replaced. I feel the mechanic at Harrington's should have caught that (he's the expert not me). I could have gotten past that but combining the problems and frustration that single issue caused plus Christine's nastiness I decided I was finished with them. And I'll say now, this was not a personality issue between she and I. I witnessed her in action with other customers and just wondered why people would allow her to get away with treating them as poorly as she did. My recommendation is to stay clear of this place. There are plenty of good mechanics out there that actually appreciate your business. This is not one of those places.

They all know where to find anything. If they can, they walk with you to find what you need. Now, that to me is good service! I have even had them help carry paint to my car. They are a larger store than it appears outside, but not too large to give you that special hometown feel service. Some items may be a bit higher, but for the convenience, and to save on gas, I will say their prices are fair. They have greenhouses outside that I have purchased beautiful flowers from. They have an extremely large paint department where you can find any supplies you might need. They carry Benjamin Moore paint and will tint it with spot on accuracy. Craig, one of the owners, is a locksmith. Long before key fobs, I had to use his services. It was after hours, but he was there quickly. He charged a reasonable price, and worked quickly. The truck is painted nicely with the Ace logo, his shirt also id'd him as an Ace representative which I consider very professional. I have nothing but nice things to say about this store that I have utilized since I moved to Thurmont in the 80's. It has only gotten better!

Unfortunately, one smug employee ruined that experience for me, and I'll now be switching my allegiance to Ace. I purchased a small $6 shower accessory. Unfortunately I lost the receipt. The accessory was not what I needed, and I attempted to return it. The employee stated I cannot return without a receipt, even for a store credit (I was going to purchase products worth more than the value of what I was returning). I was disappointed at this response, but I shopped for what I needed anyway. I went to the front, and the employee was helping another customer in an aisle. After helping that customer, she proceeded to another customer in the aisle. Now, I understand one person having to triage, but at that point a simple acknowledgement of me would have been nice. It felt intentional, and it seemed as if the employee was taking satisfaction, acting somewhat smug as she told me she won't accept a return without a receipt. Not sure if this is just one rude employee, or the owner is really this strict about returns on $6 items that are clearly unused, but either way, I seriously doubt I'll be doing business here any more. If you had or have a similar experience, I also encourage you to drop these clowns. (Incidentally, when I purchased the item I would eventually return, I was not asked for my phone number (which they generally use to text receipts, as I'm part of their "customer club" or whatever. So there is actually another mess-up by a different employee that could have accommodated the companies own draconian return policy.) In short, I go to a neighborhood spot like this for the service. And when I'm treated this way, it defeats the purpose of avoiding much more convenient and likely cheaper options like Ace or Amazon. You are not really selling hardware - you should be trying to offer a superior customer experience--remember that and you will not lose customers like this

The manager came out and stopped me as I was getting into my vehicle, just to make sure that I realized that I had purchased a "deep base" paint, (which would have been completely wrong for this project). It was really nice of him to catch that, because I never noticed. Then he took me back in the store, and made the exchange, even covering the cost of the difference (the correct paint was a couple dollars more). You just don't see that these days. Somebody taking the time to pay that much attention, where I was negligent, bring it to my attention, and then actually take less money - to make the exchange quicker and more convenient for me. It's hard for me to remember not to just run to the "big orange" store every time I need something in the shop, or around the house. But this is just a little reminder, that there is a much better option.
