I don't have any comments about the customer service in this place because I've never made a purchase here or had any interaction with the staff - good or bad. The stuff here is super cute, but the reason I haven't purchased anything from there is because it's way too expensive! Antique and vintage is great- and the quality is often much better, but you can definitely find cheaper antique pieces even just down the street at the Community Thrift Store. That being said, I do like perusing the store because there are some great things there. I just signed up for yelp specifically to review this place. Harrington Galleries seems like a gem when you find it. Fun pieces, an eclectic vibe... It seems like a great idea to invest in furniture from here. Don't. Seriously, please take your money else where. I've bought several large pieces here, and all of it showed up damaged. My couch ($1300) was filthy from being moved. It wasn't wrapped to protect the bright blue fabric from moving or anything. (I didn't even bother complaining since I had bigger fish to fry... But trust me they would have somehow blamed me if I had.) An antique Asian inspired cabinet($700) came scratched, chipped and actually had wood split from whatever the movers did to it. When I brought this up to the gallery with before and after pictures taken in their store and at home they literally said "well it's an antique, you must understand that wear and tear is normal". And that's after I sent them before and after pictures. I'm still waiting for that issue to be resolved(it's been over a month) A leather ottoman I received($150) was split... But they actually replaced it with another after I complained. However due to the lack of communication... Apparently no one knew I had gotten a new one... they tried to bring me another one with my second delivery. Multiple emails have gone unanswered. I've visited the store multiple times and still have unresolved issues. Don't be tempted. It's not worth it. read more

If you combine this two factors with a very reasonable price that's how you get 5 stars. I came to Harringtons today to browse and maybe get some ideas for the apartment my boyfriend and I want. The first thing that caught my eye was an upcycled, teal photo frame that would look amazing in a living room to brighten it up. $35 for what I believe was a 5x7- a little steep for my wallet. So, I decided to continue on throughout the store and not let that picture frame price scare me. My friend and I found bright, colorful bookcases and end tables which, if I had my own place, I would have bought on the spot. Relatively reasonable prices fo the fine quality of the bookcases. Perhaps they will still be there when we finally rent an apartment :) read more

I've been going here for at least ten years and I am only 32 years old. As a kid in my 20s old man Harrington would be cool with me and my best friend going to the 2nd floor and perusing for hours and asking tons of questions. He was also totally down to haggle, something I learned from my father. I think he expected to haggle as much as I did and gave me great deals. There are still stacks of vintage trunks and almost antiques on the 2nd floor, but with out the broken antique graveyard and loft sized stacks of 80s office furniture. Although I miss those days there are still deals to be found and if you are a kid in your 20s it has more soul than Ikea or at least you can mix and match. The daughter who now runs Harringtons takes after her dad, too, and shines kindly to haggling to make a deal. Do you like the excitement of the hunt? Do you see potential in furniture that needs some loving or to personalize it yourself? If so, come here. The street level floor has higher quality unique hand picked beauties from their collection and is worth checking out. They are also transforming the space into the 21st century to include more of a lifestyle warehouse like sharing it's space with a bicycle company. This is a long time family run business and is just as great as community thrift and thrift town and should always be part of the Mission. As for people complaining about Harringtons being dirty, slightly worn/ quality of mid century furniture or whatever maybe you didn't grow up where I did or never experienced the pre-gentrified Mission. Had an awful experience from the woman pictured here. My boyfriend and i stopped by to browse some furniture. The store was empty besides us and 3 employees. We sat down on a couch by the window, admiring the couch and looking through the swatches. The sun was on me from the window and my boyfriend says "whoa, don't move!" and snapped a photo of me! We continued to sit and chat for a few moments when this woman walks up to us and says, very condescendingly, "Can i help you guys? or are you just taking photos???" As i look up to an empty store... i said "We were just leaving." We got up and walked out. She was so rude and unwelcoming and stood by the front door until we walked out. I would bet if i was a white, techie with a patagonia jacket on, she would have extended more respect to me, or if i would have dropped $5,000 on a couch. But what is the harm in us browsing and talking when the store is completely empty? If anything we were bringing in appeal from the outside looking in, that the store wasn't completely dead. Definitely a store for elites and no customer service given to window shoppers. i would never recommend anyone to shop at this store. read more

I am not sure what dubious reputation and bad Yelp reviews the other reviewers are referencing in regards to Harrington Galleries. "Dubious" and "shady" are so far from my own experience, I simply have to write in to give this place a review. I came into the store for the first time ever on Sunday, along with my mother and my boyfriend. The BF and I are shopping for a couch and my mom suggested Valencia St. furniture stores might yield some good results. So, off we went to all the Valencia St. stores. Harrington was our second stop. While it's chock full of stuff, the store does not feel oppressively crowded and there are some real gems in there. My mother, who does a lot of antiquing, did say that the prices were on the higher end, overall, and that may well be true, but I found Fiona (the owner?) to be willing to lower the price on many of the items we were considering. We were probably in the store for at least an hour and a half, going back and forth about various pieces of furniture. At no time did I find Fiona to be "pushy" and she didn't crowd us at all. She would check in on us occasionally and answer questions and make suggestions, but I never felt like I was getting a hard sell. While we did not find a couch at Harrington Galleries, we found two other amazing pieces which matched our other furniture perfectly. One was, quite frankly, a steal -- I still can't believe this gorgeous cabinet was as inexpensive as it was. The other was pricier, but well worth it. We were very satisfied. But what about delivery, you may ask? This is what pushes my review into 5 stars. We purchased our furniture at the end of the day on Sunday and Fiona said the first day they could deliver would be on Tuesday. Unfortunately, I was going out of town and would not be back til Friday. We said we were fine waiting til next week, but Fiona said they would try to accomodate us and deliver the pieces on Monday. Late Monday afternoon, the truck rolled up to make the delivery. The two cabinets we bought were really heavy and it was a real struggle to get them up the stairs. Both delivery guys really gave it 150%. In the end, they had to remove the front door to pull the cabinets into the house, and they did it efficiently and professionally. I was really impressed at how hard they worked to satisfy a customer, going out of their way to complete the delivery. Based the in-store and delivery experience, I will definitely be shopping at Harrington Galleries again! read more

Harringtons is a mixed bag. Most of the time when I go in there it is either mostly dingy mid century cast offs (like stuff you would find at a yard sale at 11am after the crowd left) or awkward, very cheap new stuff in the back (like see through pillow cases and the most dreadful, dark, musty sale section of all time). A few years ago they use to have better quality. But, I think they have gone down hill since. Community Thrift, which is down half a block, blows this place away in terms of quality and that is a goodwill. How I think they can improve: Clean the entire store, top to bottom - vacuum, scrub the floor, dust, remove clutter, paint bright fresh colors, hire some happy enthusiastic people (seriously, the employees always seem pissed to be there and grumpy). Remove 65% of the "inventory" in there - most of it is absolute garbage that doesn't deserve to take up that kind of space and should be at the goodwill. Raise the quality and keep the prices reasonable - stick with vintage. Do not buy cheap new stuff because it ruins the entire vibe of the store and looks really bad. Create nice displays in the windows instead of throwing random furniture there and letting clumps of dust gather. There is so much potential if someone could actually muster up the energy to care. The location is excellent so why not make the best of it? read more

Wow. I usually don't believe reviews that say places are rude, but these guys are. I've come into this store often because I love looking at pretty furniture and sometimes they have some. I came in with my mother one day and fell mildly in love with a pair of chairs- fake leather, pretty worn, with scuffing/paint/small tears, but I liked them- and was quoted $300 (overpriced but not excessively so.) She was friendly and said the price would go down if they were still there in a few months. I came back a few months later, with friends my age, still in love with the chairs and prepared to pay the $300 for them. This time a different woman approached me as if I shouldn't be there, quoted me $600 (!) for the chairs, and was rude when I explained the previous price and pointed out the flaws (It felt really dismissive, and I think she thought I was lying about the $300?) Anyway, I am not oversensitive about customer service, but it really made me think twice about going there again. Please think about being nicer to young people! Some of us care about antiques too! (Update!!! I found one of the chairs on craigslist for $50 a few months later. I'm pretty sure it's the exact one. It's in my living room now. Happy ending.) read more

This place is terrible. First of all, their new merchandise is all cheap and poor quality, and horribly overpriced. And their vintage stuff is filthy, often run down/broken... and also overpriced. Plus the customer service is appalling! My boyfriend had ordered a couch that ended up not fitting through the door of our building, so the delivery guy took it back and promised that we could get a refund or store credit. We went into the store the next day and went to the manager to inquire about the process. She snapped at us and basically accused us of lying, told us she couldn't do anything about it, and literally said "I don't need this" and WALKED AWAY! We couldn't believe it. We asked her to call the store owner and she refused!! Her behavior was unreal, if someone acted like that in my store they would be out of a job immediately. We finally had to go track down the delivery guy to verify our story and a few days later they reluctantly refunded us for the couch that had never come into our possession. What a freaking scam. There have been several other times when I've also experience unpleasant/unhelpful salespeople in the store, but that time definitely takes the cake. Avoid Harrington Galleries unless you feel like paying too much money for some cheap pleather chairs or a moldy old rug, and getting yelled at in the process. read more

Terrible. Don't look in. If you're in the store now, run away. Don't be tempted by anything that looks halfway decent here, because it's not. I used to live in the neighborhood and would often drop in to check stuff out that looked interesting. On closer inspection the stuff was - without fail - cheaply made and/or damaged, and always way too expensive for its crappiness. So one day, after years of popping by and never getting anything, I saw four dining chairs that I just fell in love with. I could tell they were refinished, and not terribly well; but they had been reupholstered well and were really cute and seemed well-made. WRONG. Maybe it was the light in the store (dim) that made it hard to tell... but when I got the chairs home I could tell the finish was terrible. The wood hadn't been stained, it had been sloppily painted with a brownish paint. The upholstery was still ok, so I thought I could deal. But now they're falling apart. Within a few weeks, the sh*tty nails they used to keep the chairs together were falling out; screws are now poking through the upholstery; two of the chairs are sitting in the corner waiting for repairs because you can't sit in them without hitting the floor. They're still cute, but not worth what I paid, which at the time I thought was an OK deal. Never again. I don't write a lot of reviews on Yelp. I especially don't write bad reviews of places I've only been to once. But I'm writing this review because I've been to Harringtons a million times and each time it has proven terrible. When we were shopping for furniture for our new apartment a couple of months ago, we were effectively kicked out of the store because we apparently didn't look like we were going to spend enough money to be worth their time! (We were wearing the kind of clothes that software engineers wear on weekends. Get over it.) I have been to many antique shops like this in the past. You've seen one you've seen them all. Some have better selections while others are mediocre. Some vary in size.. Harrington's had a rather LARGE mixture of different designs in here in regards to furnishing. I liked that. Prices are high and I found myself just looking over items noticing the prices thinking to myself how that is "too overpriced" and I could find that at the Rose Bowl or any thrift shop for less. For the most part it is a simple antique shop. Not everything is insanely over priced but if you are one who just wants something now and is not willing to seek it out then Harrington would be an excellent choice as is The Apartment which is not too far away with a great selection of stuff! read more

It's hit or miss. The staff is tough to negotiate but you have to be firm. Know your furniture! We got a Hollywood regency style sofa and vintage-esque dresser but called out the dresser as a 50s reproduction. We got an okay deal with delivery included on bundling the two. She called to confirm and showed up on time. She was very helpful and knowledgeable. She purchased the furniture a price that we felt was fair. The 2 guys that came to pick up the furniture, Mike and Mark were very courteous, knowledgeable and professional. All items were picked up at the agreed time, on time, wrapped and loaded into the truck. No fuss, no muss! This saved us time in trying to figure out what to do with some pretty good quality but not our style furniture. Reposting due to Yelp Filter: I am sorry to see all of the not so great reviews. To tell the truth I never thought I would be able to purchase anything from this store. Until one day, I decided I needed something in particular. I started my search for something to store my linens in. I was thinking of maybe a bench with a lid or even a ottoman to set at the base of my bed. I began the day at Ross (nice price but quality and choice was lacking) and then at Pier One ( Ross Quality but Lamely High Prices!). Then I began my walk down 10th Street. A bunch of furniture stores, some estate furniture and new furniture (ordered from china). Then I decided to check out Harrington's and Community Thrift Store. Community Thrift store had the regular choices with one big surprise ( a Local World Champion Baseball Player) had just unloaded a bunch of awesome furniture. Too bad I didn't need an Armoire or Bar. Then I ventured to Harrington's I found just what I needed. And at the Price I wanted. I was able to negotiate for 2 pieces. Bought them that day and came back to pick them up later that day. Love them. For the most part the staff was awesome. Only negative is that I didn't get a receipt for my purchase. I called the store and the person who answered the phone was reluctant to send me a receipt via fax so when I asked them to mail it they had to get approval. ??? Seriously? All in all, It's on my list of furniture resources. read more

I like Harrington's. It's the first time I've ever been inside, though I've walked by it about a hundred times. They have an eclectic collection of items from new to vintage. Prices do seem a bit high, but I found something I wanted and was able to dicker the price down by 20 percent. So, don't be afraid to push a bargain with them! read more

I went to every store on the street and finally popped in here and found one of the pieces (Danish Modern Bookcase) that I was looking for. I hadn't been to Harringtons for awhile because it was difficult to park with the street repair going on. But I needed a small bookcase for my daughter's room and couldn't take building yet another piece of cheap Ikea furniture that can't even be moved without breaking. I tore myself away from a beautiful double-pedestal dining room table and 8 matching chairs from the old City of Paris store, and moved towards the back. There I found the perfect small bookshelf -- nothing fancy but the perfect size. It was in good condition and just needed a coat of paint to freshen it up. Because it needed a coat of paint the owner offered me a very good price and I bought it on the spot. And, I'm sure I will be passing it on to my daughter when she has kids of her own. We were here this past Monday to look for some chairs. We've bought from them before but after this one visit, never will we return. I was browsing with my toddler who picked up a price or info tag from a sofa and was rudely approached by the salesperson who said "we need that!" and hovered over us almost to the point of trying to kick us out. Of course you need that. We weren't going to walk off with it! The tone and the manner in which this sales person communicated was absolutely rude/demeaning and totally unprofessional. I'm not sure if he (a tall black gentlemen) was the owner or an employee. If you were the owner, shame on you for your customer service (especially to a repeat customer) and if you were an employee, I would highly recommend some sort of reprimand and a lesson in good attitude. We'll probably come back again to this space but not to shop for furniture but for the Public Bike mini-store. I guess customer service is hit and miss depending on when and who is working but this one time was enough for me to not recommend this shop at all. That is how bad this salesperson's attitude was that day. read more

We worked with Fiona to have the cushions re-done without buttons. There was no charge to us for this, which we appreciated. We just picked them up and we are very happy with the results. The one drawback we had to go without them for several weeks while they were being reworked. Thanks to Harrington Galleries for helping us work through the issue. I can't imagine what all those bad reviewers are talking about. I've been in this store dozens of times and bought furniture that I had delivered three times. Every time - I had great service at the store, a good price on the stuff, and prompt and reliable delivery. The prices here are FAR better than most of the over-priced stuff around town and they often have beautiful, unique pieces. There are very expensive items, sure, but if you look, even a little, you can find great bargains. I love this place! read more

I would also like to ad, my dads business of furniture restoration is out of nor cal, we are californians and furthermore agreeing with another yelp user, they do flat out lie. We were selling a total of 10 pieces and 5000.00 is a large amount but if you offer that selling price would you expect 600.00 as a rebuttal?? I would also like to ad, we were very happy with donating all of the furniture to Salvation Army in the end..It felt much better then to make a low 600.00 from these crooks. The retail store is unlike any place I've seen in the city - and they are really willing to help find the right piece for the budget. It's HUGE. The two pieces I bought were delivered perfectly.
