Sausage Pizza
Peter T.

How do you live in a place and not know there's a "special dish" out there that everybody raves about? Apparently, it's not that hard. I lived in the Quad Cities for two years and choked down Little Caesar's and a local Happy Joe's pizza regularly, but nobody ever let me in on this secret. I spent so much time eating in a bar there, they named a sandwich after me. As with most things in my life, the bar burned down a few years later. There is, and has been for years and years, a "Quad Cities Style" pizza. What makes it different? The crust has a "nutty" taste to it, the sauce is spicy, all toppings are under the cheese, and most of all, the pie is cut in STRIPS, not slices or squares (which is called "tavern style" in Chicago).Quad Cities Style Pizza Review One of the largest, oldest purveyors of these unique delights is Harris Pizza, which multiple locations throughout the Quad Cities. Did I explain what the Quad Cities are? Four adjacent cities straddling the Mississippi River on the Iowa/Illinois. Home of John Deere. That's pretty much all you need to know. Oh, and outside of Davenport, is a small town named Walcott, home of the world's largest truck stop, right there on I-80, the main street of America. Be sure to check out the annual "Truckers Jamboree" in July where they whip up some very fine BBQ thick thick thick pork chops. So anyway, I was blasting through the Quad Cities, and decided to partake of their specialty, got a sausage pie to go, as I was stopping for the night an hour down the road and I could examine and digest the pie at my leisure. Which I did. And enjoyed it immensely. The sauce is zesty, the cheese melty, the sausage was terrific, the crust crispy and chewy at the same time. The "strips" were a little disarming, but I prevailed. And I will again.

I called to ask if they sell pizza by the slice and YES THEY DO, so I came into the restaurant and I paid for two slices and a soda, paid and went to grab my slices! God how disappointing, I even asked the girl again if this was two slices, they where small, cold and it was kind off bland!

First time review at this location. Service was good considering they only had 2 servers for the dining room. Ordered pizzas and some sandwiches. Food was hot and good. I ordered the Hat Trick pizza and it tasted great.

This is a must try pizza restaurant, the pizza is unique in its own way. The toppings are fresh and full of flavor, the crust is a perfect thickness with a crisp to it. I would say it's one of the best pizzas I've had around here.

This is supposed to be a Caesar salad with chicken. It is warm and slimy. Not much chicken on it and the dressing is not a Caesar dressing

They don't do dine in at this location. Be warned. If you're in the area and think - "Hey, pizza sounds good!", don't bother.

Always the best, I bought two half baked to take to my son and family in Omaha with Whitey's chasers of course. Never miss when I'm home!

I was under the impression pizza came with sauce on it. Mine sure didn't, or barely. Was too dry to enjoy.

They have no delivery & I get tired of the crust being burnt. Last time it was so hard that it broke one of my fillings.

Don't buy the sausage pizza. Two small pizzas and one cheese bread over $45 and the sausage went in the trash.

It's decked out with live plants, some comfortable booths and some tables. It's an attractive space with a good view of the kitchen. It's a solid little space. We ordered the house salad, which is tossed in buttermilk ranch dressing and it's super delicious. Such a great salad to start with before the pizzas. It's large enough for 3 people to share, as there were 2 of us and we had some left over to take home. Brian Olsen has pizza on lock! He is a master at his craft. These pizzas have an amazing flavor, terrific crust and quality ingredients. They serve burgers and a chicken sandwiche, too! We ordered 3 different pizzas... one with garlic cream sauce and green peppers, one with pepperoni, sausage & red peppers and another specialty pizza with the hot honey & arugula with pepperoni and Calabrian chili's. Man, that was some good Za!! Claire was our server and she was terrific, too! Clearing dirty plates, refreshing silverware and beverages. Terrific attitude! All in all, Bettendorf has an amazing pizza restaurant that the locals should be grateful for in their own neighborhood! And, Smash serves beer, wine, and cocktails, too. I wish I lived closer. I'd become a regular and dine in often! Whenever I'm back in town, I'll be sure to stop by to try some different specialty pies, like the elote pie. That one sounded really good! So did the za with wild mushroom & kale!! Maybe one day Smash will create a taco pizza to compete with Happy Joe's, rip Joe Whitey. But, seriously, there is no comparison between the two. Smash is hands down one of the best pizza restaurants in the QC's and is better that many BIG city pizza spots. Thanks for the good time, great food & service!!

There was some kind of a party going on inside so we decided to sit outside. The waiter was decent, and seemed knowledgeable about the menu. I wasn't sure if I wanted the garlic chicken pizza or the chicken fajita pizza. He said definitely the garlic chicken pizza. Since we walked to the restaurant from our hotel, I also had a Long Island iced tea. I wouldn't say the food was bad. However, I could neither see nor taste any garlic on my garlic chicken pizza. I could see and taste the chicken, peppers, and onions. I was not able to pick up any hint of garlic. One of the other coaches tried some of my pizza. He said he thought it could use a little something to give it a bit more flavor. I agreed. Maybe some garlic would have helped? My Long Island iced tea also tasted fine. However, I have to question the alcohol content. I drank it in less than half an hour and didn't feel a thing. I decided not to get another one. At $8.88 per drink, I didn't think it was worth it. I want to stress that the food and drinks we got tasted fine. I just didn't feel like I got what I ordered. We had a good time out on the patio, so the time wasn't wasted, but I highly doubt I'll be going back. I didn't take any photos because I wasn't expecting to do review. After thinking about it for a while, I decided people would want to know about my experience there. What do you think? Was this review helpful?

It looks like a typical sports bar/restaurant. What sets it apart is the quality of the food. With our most recent visit, we went at an off-peak time between lunch and dinner. The place was relatively empty. Service was timely. For an appetizer, we had fried pickles. These looked like they were cut, battered, and fried in-house and were good. For my entree, I had the Zombie Invasion Burger. They advertise it as possibly the best burger on the planet. I don't know if I would endorse it being the best on the planet, but it's definitely one of the better burgers I have had. It's a gourmet-type burger, pairing sweet with some zing. The fries were standouts as well. They weren't particularly fancy, but they were well seasoned (just salt and pepper) and based on the quality, I am guessing they were cut in-house and fried to order. My wife had a Mediterranean salad, which she liked. I did not try any of it, but I have had a salad there before (Plantation Salad) and thought it was pretty darned good. For dessert, I had the cheesecake. This was good. It wasn't necessarily great, but I left happy. Overall, the food here is really good and the prices are appropriate.

We were barely seated when they began taking drink orders--super efficient and friendly service right from the start. I tried the Cherry Bomb Blonde beer and really enjoyed it--light and flavorful. The servers worked as a team and got everyone's orders in quickly, which is impressive for a group our size. We started with the pretzel bites and beer cheese, which were a definite 10/10--warm, soft, and perfectly paired with the cheese. We also shared a hamburger pizza, and really appreciated the thin crust and how the hamburger was broken up into small pieces. The sauce was sweet, and we would've loved just a little more of it (or maybe some on the side for dipping). We're not from the area, but if we were, this would definitely be a regular spot. I've included pictures of the BLT pizza and the jalapeño pineapple pizza that others in our group ordered--both got great reviews too. Overall, fast and friendly service, especially impressive for a large group, and the food was delicious. Highly recommend!

Pizzas have more topping options than in the distant past, but a lot of the menu has stood the test of time. You need to pay in cash, but there is an ATM on site. Watch for your Kennedy Half Dollar in your change. You can get pre-made frozen pizzas with a bit of advance notice; you'll need to find someone to ship them. We like to get the half-baked pizza and take it home and freeze sections to have later. On our most recent visit we got dinner and took home our half-baked pizza to start enjoying the next evening. I got the Italian Beef and my wife got Fries Chicken. Both were great! I had a large pile of tender beef with green pepper on French bread. The chicken was crispy, piping hot, and delicious. The tables are either original or food replicas, as are the chairs. They still have the old style cloth rotating hand towels in the bathroom, with paper towels for the less adventurous. Bar drinks are good, and they carry a wide variety of beer by the bottle and can and soda by the can so you won't have to take a Pepsi product over Coca-Cola or visa-versa. You may get to enjoy sitting at a table with others if they're busy, but don't shy away from making new friends It's a unique style of pizza (QC style), but there are a lot of us that like it and I've converted a number of newbies into fans! Relax, enjoy the unique vibe, and have some darn tasty grub.
