Oh Shirlington. If I had my druthers I would pack up and move to Shirlington. The gas is cheap, there's a City Paper box walking distance from the movie theater, plenty of restaurants, a library, a theatre theatre and a Harris Teeter. This Harris Teeter's layout is on the interesting side of the spectrum. If you have trouble finding something there's a chance that it is on the above floor. There are stairs and an elevator so this level is accessible. The registers staffed by associates and the self-checkout machines are on opposite sides of the first floor so that may confuse you depending on which side you enter. You don't need to worry about which register you go to because neither validates parking. I have yet to be towed nor have I received a ticket in the garage but the most I've stayed in a parking space is an hour tops. I wish that they did have a machine like the Pentagon City Harris Teeter where lottery tickets could be purchased. 3.5 but I am rounding up to 4 since the associates are always so kind.

FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. They have a vast selection of wines, ports, cheeses, caviar, and breads. What keeps us going back, and a lot of our friends talk about this, too, is that there is not a hint of pretention there. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods. Off-street parking is almost always available here. I know they do tastings, too, but have never been to one. If you're looking for a nice pairing for a special dinner or holiday meal but don't want to feel looked down upon like in some other wine joints, check out Fern Street. Clare, from Tallula wine bar, works here part-time, too, and really knows her stuff.

The deli counter is definitely one of them. I went to Harris Teeter today looking for a different shopping experience than what I do every single week. Sadly,I didn't get it. Their produce department is absolutely beautiful. All of their shelves are well stalked and organized and staff in and around the deli area is beyond my expectation. The problem is with all that staff in the deli area , there's not a single person that wants to get behind that counter and cut your deli meats. Today I waited nine minutes with all manner of deli staff walking around me, and actually ignoring me from behind the deli counter. (I'll add that its not the first time) They may have figured out that I'm a Yelp reviewer, because the "manager" came over and offered herself to help me with my deli order - which by this time was too little too late. By comparison, I went to the meat and fish counter, where the minute I walked up, somebody was right there offering assistance, telling me to ask for them if I decided that I needed any help. Far cry from being ignored just a few feet away. Suggest cutting the dead weight in the deli. Staffing looks great on paper, but not in practice. There are 3 places at a grocery store where you actually need human help, deli, meat counter and cashier. If you want 66% then this is the store for you.
