I shop here often. Today there were no shopping carts available at 9 am. I finally secured one inside that a worker gave to me. Tried to go upstairs with the cart. Elevator is not working. Went to get a basket so I could shop upstairs. Had to carry a lot of stuff in the basket. Got back downstairs and realized I'd forgotten something upstairs. Put my basket in my cart and climbed stairs again to get my item. When I got back downstairs, someone had taken my basket out of my cart and taken my cart! what the hell. So now I had to finish my shopping with a basket that was too heavy for my 70 year old body. I made a complaint but nobody seemed to care. read more

This particular location feels smaller than a normal Harris teeter - less selection of produce, ready made meals, etc. It also doesn't have as many checkout lines, so it's always a longer wait. That being said, there's a large parking lot, it feels clean, and has most basic items. If you needed something in a pinch, it would get the job done; however I would avoid going there if you need specific items/were cooking something elaborate. read more

Average Harris teeter store, I've seen better. Customer service is ok, but what bothers me is that they don't remove expired products that may be sitting on their shelves or fridge. Wow - just had to respond after seeing some of the reviews. They have the freshest produce, fish, meats - great selection of organic products! They may be a little more expensive but have you been to Whole Foods? Plus, the staff is phenomenal - when they asked if I had found everything I was looking for and said "actually, I was looking for __ and you don't seem to carry it." Two weeks later the customer service person said that they had gotten it in and it was on aisle x. Unfortunately, the Pharmacy staff is the worst - I honestly don't know if it could possibly get worse. The staff of 3 are standing around chatting and continue to do so quite loudly and then after 5-10 minutes you get I'll be with you in a minute. If I am picking up more than 1 prescription- I cannot count the number of times they have shorted me - they don't let you see them or tell you what exactly you are picking up. Between the cash register, plexiglass and all of these pamphlets - It is impossible to see what RXs you are getting. It's just a terrible pharmacy - the one in Shirlington is great. I really hate going to Giant or Safeway - they are not as clean and certainly could care less if you are looking for a specific product. Oh Shirlington. If I had my druthers I would pack up and move to Shirlington. The gas is cheap, there's a City Paper box walking distance from the movie theater, plenty of restaurants, a library, a theatre theatre and a Harris Teeter. This Harris Teeter's layout is on the interesting side of the spectrum. If you have trouble finding something there's a chance that it is on the above floor. There are stairs and an elevator so this level is accessible. The registers staffed by associates and the self-checkout machines are on opposite sides of the first floor so that may confuse you depending on which side you enter. You don't need to worry about which register you go to because neither validates parking. I have yet to be towed nor have I received a ticket in the garage but the most I've stayed in a parking space is an hour tops. I wish that they did have a machine like the Pentagon City Harris Teeter where lottery tickets could be purchased. 3.5 but I am rounding up to 4 since the associates are always so kind. read more

This is absolutely the WORSE Harris teeter, I didn't know they could get this bad. I wouldn't dare get a sandwixh made there because there is always gnats and flys all over the produce, salad bar always looks days old. The entire seafood area looks gross and smells the entire front of the store. Now we know seafood is pungent but let's be clear I can walk into giant and Safeway and NOT have this problem. Cleanliness is def a concerning factor for me here. The layout is kind of weird but whatever, the meat is over priced and always picked over and worst of all... their bag salad is ALWAYS BAD case in point I just bought this bag salad Sunday, it expired on the 26th which was Saturday. Denice very graciously helped me with getting a money order, after dealing with a large number of people checking out. Even when I had difficulty with my cards during the payment process she was very accommodating and pleasant to work with. Fran was especially kind and helpful with the checkout process as well, and even remarked at how much money I saved with my loyalty card. Rodney in the meat department is the reason I shop at Shirlington's Harris Teeter. He always has some form of Choice Angus steaks on ridiculous sale and will cut them extra thick to his patrons specs every time. It's like having a corner butcher shop. While waiting for him to cut, trim and rake 1.75" steaks, he always has a good story or a great recipe to share. Whomever hired him should get a raise..... after Rodney ;-). This is my local Harris Teeter. I've been here several times on my way home. Major advantage is that it has a garage parking like some other Harris teeters near here. Most times you can find a parking spot but during major hours you might be lucky finding a spot in the upper levels. The actual store is a 2 level store with limited options. The butcher/seafood area is great. They greet you presently every time. Good quality seafood. There is a salad bar but would also prefer an expansive hot meal area like the one on south Glebe rd. I actually saw a fly landing near the tuna salad once but that's neither here or there. The customer service overall is great. Everyone is pleasant even for a busy grocery store. AAAND the self checkout is one of the best for a small store; it's fast and better than waiting in line at the register at the front. read more

Not my first choice for grocery stores, but it is conveniently located if you are in the Shirlington area. I bought a 4-pack of AA rechargeable batteries on sale priced at $8.99 from the regular $14.99. On my way out I looked at the receipt because my bill came out higher than I expected. Sure enough they charged me $12.99, so I went back to correct the problem. I expected $4 back, but instead she refunded the full $12.99. Deciding whether to run before she notices the mistake, I incredulously pointed out she gave me back too much money. She politely responds by saying, it was our mistake first, so you get the full amount back. I was dumbfounded. Do grocery stores really do that sort of thing? I've never had a negative expereince the few times I've been in and out grabbing stuff, but this latest visit was definitely a 5-star customer service experience. read more

Stopped by HT after a full night in Shirlington to pick up a few items. This is one of the smaller HT's in the area, but it has everything, two floors, so there's quite a lot upstairs. I believe most of the non-food items are upstairs. Service was polite and friendly. Only bummer, the entrance I came into, was closed by the time I was finished my shopping. So, I had to leave my cart and bags at the opposite entrance, get my car and drive all the way around to the other side and try to figure out how to get into the parking garage. My husband and I stopped in to do our weekly grocery shopping while we were waiting for our table at a restaurant nearby. This is a two-story HT with upstairs being wine, "ethnic food", cleaning supplies, bath products. The lines moved super slowly as most of the registers are not self-scan. They have everything I normally purchase at HT so no complaints there. There is a parking garage and I believe it is free, but we parked in the main Shirlington garage and just walked. I would have no issue stopping here again if I was in the area and needed something. read more

WARNING! DISGUSTING PRODUCE! Please do not get sick from eating this store's food. I have been living in the area for about four years. Over time, I have noticed the produce quality wax and wane at this location. In other words, it is hit or miss. A few rotten cherry tomatoes here and there is nothing to get worked up over. HOWEVER, a recently purchased bag of Perdue chicken quarters was ROTTEN when we opened it. The bag was absolutely rancid!!!!! It made us sick and stunk up our whole apartment. We bagged it up and returned it to the store. The manager proceeds to open the bag on the customer service counter!!!!! Despite being warned of the disgusting smell. Simply unbelievable!!! He then asks "did it smell like this when you bought it?" No, sir, we didn't intentionally buy fetid chicken from your poorly managed store. Way better than Giant. Much cleaner and more variety. Plus, they have free food samples. Quick check outs and just a more comfortable grocery store shopping experience than Giant. This is one of the smaller Harris Teeter's I've been to but it's well placed and gets the job done. Given the smaller space, it's a bit cramped. They definitely tried to fit everything in there. (There is an upstairs and a downstairs...I usually find my baking supplies and water upstairs). This supermarket is well placed, there's ample parking since it's right next to a Parking garage. The staff is friendly, seemingly always keeping busy keeping everything neat (which I think is necessary in such a small space, if left alone, the shelves can easily get disorganized). They're also quite knowledgeable and approachable since sometimes it is difficult for me to find what I'm looking for in here (given the 2 floors) It's also near the movie theatre in case you wanted to get your skittles and junior mints here for less instead of the concession stand ;) or perhaps that's frowned upon. read more

I've reached my limit with this Harris Teeter. I come to this location 3-4x a week usually for lunch/groceries and have have run into some issues regularly that I'm done with. They have varying food items that are prepared and ready for lunch starting at 10:30am but today I stop in at 11:30 and notice that said item isn't prepared or ready.. I ask a gentleman behind the deli counter if there is any of the particular product today and the reaction goes as follows: Deli Worker: Yeah there is but it's gonna take 20 min to prepare. (from my past experience of this happening 3 other times I know this is a lie and will be closer to 40-45 minutes) Me: You haven't made any today at all? Deli Worker: No we're backed up and had to do some cleaning today. Me: I understand this but it's been over an hour since this item should've been prepared and you have nothing? The deli worker proceeds to stare and me and then walks off. Apparently the conversation is over without any resolve. It would seem sticking to their own timelines is difficult and so is providing customer service. I'll cease to patron this establishment from now on. read more

I have been coming to this place for years. Today, I sought to return 3 bullion mixes that my husband bought, not realizing they have MSG (Monosodium glutamate, a toxin that attacks the nervous system) in them. Of course, I had no receipt, as it was several weeks ago. Total refund would have been $15. They refused the return, even though the items are in perfect condition, citing store policy. Hope that $15 was worth it, Harris Teeter, to lose the thousands of dollars I would have spent there in the future. I'll be shopping at Trader Joe's--where they are not constantly contributing to the egregious pollution of the oceans by bagging and double-bagging everything in plastic at checkout. I'm stuck between a 3 and a 4 for this Harris Teeter. So I'm going to give it a 3.499999999999... ...and don't you dare round up! 1.) First thing I should mention...this store is compact. I mean...it's tighter than an Instagram "Model's" jeans. Tighter than David Hasselhoff's facelift. 2.) Second thing I should mention...this store is very clean and neat. 3.) Third thing I should mention...the fresh produce looked like they grew very relaxed and privileged. There's nothing worse than seeing a bundle of grapes that looked like they hitchhiked across America to get to the store. 4.) Fourth thing I should mention...this store apparently has no idea how to keep common items together. BRUH...I just wanted two bags of gummy bears (shuttup...I like what I like...no one asked you.)...and that game of hide and seek made me look like a raging lunatic, jetting in and out of isles until I found it hiding against a wall in a corner by itself. Cookies were on the complete opposite side of the store and chips on another side. I came to the conclusion that this Harris Teeter HATES your attempts to eat unhealthy. This store is alright. WARNING: they do not accept Apple Pay. If you run in there for a quick trip like I did but forgot your wallet you will be out of luck. But first you will be treated to a cornucopia of buffoonery and incompetence by every single member of the staff. First you will be told to hold your phone to the reader. Then, when that doesn't work and the attendant just stands there like a dumbstruck moron, you will have to suggest that they transfer your purchase to another machine. When they do, and that still doesn't work, they will again just blankly stare at you with an quiet apathy that will destroy your soul. When you suggest that they then call a manager, the manager will also go through the same non troubleshooting techniques that don't work before he finally posses the ultimate question of "do you have any other forms of payment?" What a genius question, why hadn't I though of that? At that point, and only then, will you get to see the laziest and most indifferent employee in the whole story, the general manager. She will explain in a know it all voice that Harris Teeter has never accepted Apple Pay, at which point you will inform her that you had used it there previously many times. She will then dismiss your experience and say that it's disabled and will then give you the same blank soulless stare that everyone else gave you. I'm generally a fan of Harris Teeter stores, but the one in Shirlington is extremely confusing to navigate and the layout doesn't make much sense. My boyfriend and I visited to get groceries and emergency supplies, in case the snowstorm became worse than predicted, while we were in the Shirlington area for lunch. This store is very strangely laid out. The produce section is disjointed, the aisles are cramped, there are two checkout areas across the store from each other, some of the alcohol is downstairs but the wine is all upstairs. Oh, and where was the bakery and the salad bar / sushi stand that is such a signature aspect of Harris Teeter? Some positives: -Decent service (even though we checked out ourselves) -they have a wine expert station near their wine section on the second floor! Cool! Overall, a rather confusing place and I think I still prefer the one in Pentagon City. read more

At first thought I was going to give this at least 3 stars but then realized that they only stars this Teeter deserves is for convenience. 1. Location. I appreciate a grocery store I can walk to, even if that's a rare occurrence. 2. Open 24 hours. I'm a night owl, and I appreciate not being forced to shop right after work when you can't even get a parking spot in the garage. Unfortunately, that "it sells food, and sometimes even has the food I'm looking for in stock" isn't something that a grocery store should get a star for. Coming in the main entrance dumps you in the service area/produce dept. Both could fit in my 500sq ft condo. Really, the produce section is almost non-existent. The most I ever get there are bananas, and occasionally some berries if they are in season and I'm feeling adventurous. I get that this is billed as a quick-shop Teeter or something like that, so it's not going to have the selection of other Teeters, but half the time what I'm looking for (and they carry) isn't even stocked on the shelves. I also find the division between floors annoying. Why are cereal, snack foods, and some of the drinks grouped with pharmacy and paper items? Put all the drinks and non-food items upstairs, and then I wouldn't forget half the stuff I came to buy. This is not the place to do your regular grocery shopping. As it's been mentioned, prices here (and at Teeters in general) are outrageous. You can buy the same gourmet cheese for half the price down the street at Trader Joe's, and it won't be spoiled. The only reason I come here is for something I can't get at Trader Joe's or at the 7-11 that's near my house. It's nice to have it close-by, but call it what it is, a slightly inflated convenience store. read more

A sorely needed addition to Shirlington. Like most urban grocery stores, anticipate making another grocery store trip when you are budgeting your time. No last minute Martha Stewart recipes could be completed at this grocery store. This is a great, convenient location for those quick, Rachael Ray, Monday through Thursday meal nights. You can also say that this H.T. would have all the supplies you needed for a quick wine and cheese gathering on Friday evening. Just budget in time for to make another stop. I'd really like to know why this location does not have any Goya products. According to Arlington County's website: Arlington has the highest proportion of Latinos of any jurisdiction in the Washington Metropolitan area. Approximately 20 percent of the County's residents are Latino. Today approximately, 12% of theArlington County government's workforce is Hispanic So seriously, WTF Harris Teeter. Didn't get the memo? Harris Teeter has always been more expensive than the other grocery chains, but last night's trip was eye-opening. A quarter-pound ball of fresh mozzarella (maybe $4, $5 elsewhere - even Whole Paycheck) was - wait for it - $8.99. The produce selection is really hit-or-miss. It wasn't terrible last night (what was there looked fresh), but the only watermelon to be found was the $5/lb. pre-cut/packaged stuff. It's August in Virginia! How do you not have some watermelons?! But the icing on the cake was the fact that the bag the cashier packed my groceries in ripped right as I walked out the door. Another employee walked by me picking up my groceries, looked at me, and JUST KEPT WALKING. Incredibly poor customer service. I took TWO of the free cookies in retaliation. H-Ts are just not worth the mark-up resulting from their 24/7 hours, but if you live in the area and don't have a car, I suppose it's your only choice. If you DO have a car - go to the Safeway on King for the selection, or the Shoppers on Rt. 1 for the best prices. read more

This HT is much crappier than the ones in Pentagon City and Ballston. The produce section is small and some of the fruits and veggies seem a little past their prime. I usually come here for fish since they have a lot of wild caught options, but they are ALWAYS out of the fish that is on sale for the week. I am not exaggerating. It has happened at least 5 times. The guy at the seafood counter said to get a raincheck at customer service to get the sale price once the next shipment arrives. This does not help me when I want to make fish that night. And didn't rainchecks fall by the wayside in 1989? HT is expensive in general. Unless I need something in a pinch, I never buy staples like bread, cereal, and canned goods here. Harris Teeter is always expensive. I used to live in laurel and when they opened up a brand new one I was excited. Moved to Virginia and this location is disappointing. It's two levels and fairly small. Not enough space in the produce area for cart traffic. There is free parking in the garage and a salad bar. But again, super expensive. I continued going to my old location because it was so much larger with a huge cheese selection, sushi and salad car. Clean! I never go to this location unless I just happen to have to. read more

I don't really shop here all that much for groceries, as there are several stores closer to my home, but I do come here for lunch a fair bit. They have set sandwich specials from the deli that rotate according to the day - usually $3 for a 6" sub M-F, and a special $4 foot long special on Fridays. I'll come here and get a foot long (which may be more on the order of 13-14"), load it up with goodies, and eat half of it for lunch while saving the rest for dinner or for lunch the next day. $4 for 2 meals - can't beat that, and the quality is very good, too. The store itself is pretty nice, too. Like I said, I don't grocery shop here very often, but it seems like they have a good selection. Oh, and they always have samples set out near the deli to munch on, as well as a free sugar cookie on the way out. Definitely a plus. read more

This is a small but useful grocery store with ample free parking tucked away in the Shirlington complex. It will be oh so useful on my next visit to the movies because I'll sneak in some fresh snacks from this place. This time, I needed lunch quickly. I was starving! I wanted soup. But none of them sparked my interest this time. In the end, I purchased a slice of pizza, a yogurt, and a huge cranberry juice. This 'Teet doesn't have each hot food station like other, larger Teets, but it will do to get your emergency lunch or lite grocery shopping done. I'm a fan. read more

This place is only good for the fact it's open 24/7 but everything is way over-priced! Even with a VIC card you'll find yourself spending over 60 bucks and still not saving a penny for whatever reason. the redbox is pretty much the only thing good about it. Wine selections good but all the way upstairs but luckily for the lazy, there's an elevator. It's clean but sometimes you'll find birds chirping around the deli area so watch out for that. As far as grocery stores go this isn't half bad at all. They have a pretty wide range of food and drinks, all the essentials at least. However, I did most of my spending here for lunch. I worked about a 5 minute walk away over the summer and the other interns and I made a ritual of getting half-priced subs. The deals were pretty amazing. You could get a $2.50 6-inch sub and grab a drink and you have quite a large and very tasty meal for under 5 bucks. Fridays were the best, when any foot-long is half off. Even better is that you can eat as many free samples and free cookies as you want while waiting in line! I think I gained a few pounds over the summer there, but damn was it delicious. Another good thing is that daily-made sushi is available for reasonable prices and if you want to buy beer, they have a great selection. I'm from Los Angeles and we don't have any Harris Teeter locations out there. My friend happens to live in the quaint village of Shirlington and it's within walking distance from her place - which makes this grocery store / pharmacy the only option in this village. Since we'd always walk to this location, I can't comment on the garage parking structure. On the upside, the place is open 24-7 but after 10pm, you can only access the location via the rear door in the parking structure. I have read NUMEROUS Yelp complaints about the fact that this place is two stories. Really? The healthy people can do the stairs and everyone else can simply use the elevator. Not sure what the issue is here other than sheer laziness. I had a service dog with me and the elevator was quite nice. Most of the food, deli, snacks and beverages are on the main level, with the pharmacy, dog food, cleaning supplies, medical items and wine upstairs. While there are no check-out stations upstairs, the lower level offers four check out lanes on one side of the store and three self-check stations on the opposite side. I have also read numerous reviews about the awful produce selections. Perhaps they revamped the place because I had no issue with freshness or taste. I was told that the entire location has undergone an update including organizing and remodeling so I found no issues there either. I generally found everything I needed and after a couple of trips, I (pretty-much) had the place mapped out in my Virgo mind. Twice we purchased pre-made items from their deli area and found them to be quite fresh n' tasty. One time, we purchased food items for a road trip to Williamsburg and everything was fine after traveling in a cooler. During my 3-week stay in Virginia, I shopped here twice before I even knew what a VIC card was. It's a rewards-type card. Get one - it'll save you (a bit) from the higher-than-usual prices. The prices were slightly more than I usually pay at a Stater Brothers or Ralph's market (back home) so I would equate the prices with a chain like Gelson's (also back home). Generally, I found everything I needed each time I shopped with exclusion of one (not terribly important) item. My suggestion is that if you're on a budget, prefer a one-level store or want a huge selection (versus convenience) shop at a Giant or other large chain-type of grocery. For me, this location was exactly what it needed to be. Within walking distance, convenient and has friendly & helpful staff. Is there still room for improvement? Perhaps, but I think this particular location is far better than some of the reviews from a couple years ago. read more

Boy was I ever excited when this Teeter finally opened up! With options like the the Bradlee Safeway / Giant disaster, this thing couldn't come soon enough. This Teeter doesn't compare with the other Teeters in the area, I'm very sad to report. It's much smaller and consequently has a much smaller selection of items. The produce section is really quite small and because of this, they tend to push higher ticketed certified organic items. Often times I find they are out of the non-organic items and I'm forced to pay tariff on a lemon that was hand picked and gently caressed in a far off land. Their meat and fish selection is pretty small too, but I will say that the items they do carry are quite fresh and delicious. The wine selection is okay, but the prices are not okay. I stopped buying wine here after the first few weeks and stick with the Bradlee Safeway for good deals on decent wines. This may just be me... but I find Teeter in general to be hella-expensive. I think if you put the same bag of groceries from Safeway head to head, you'd find a pretty big difference. I do have to say that the staff here is very friendly. They do whatever it takes to make sure you never have to wait to checkout. This is a nice change from the other stores in the area.
