I'm from Los Angeles and we don't have any Harris Teeter locations out there. My friend happens to live in the quaint village of Shirlington and it's within walking distance from her place - which makes this grocery store / pharmacy the only option in this village. Since we'd always walk to this location, I can't comment on the garage parking structure. On the upside, the place is open 24-7 but after 10pm, you can only access the location via the rear door in the parking structure. I have read NUMEROUS Yelp complaints about the fact that this place is two stories. Really? The healthy people can do the stairs and everyone else can simply use the elevator. Not sure what the issue is here other than sheer laziness. I had a service dog with me and the elevator was quite nice. Most of the food, deli, snacks and beverages are on the main level, with the pharmacy, dog food, cleaning supplies, medical items and wine upstairs. While there are no check-out stations upstairs, the lower level offers four check out lanes on one side of the store and three self-check stations on the opposite side. I have also read numerous reviews about the awful produce selections. Perhaps they revamped the place because I had no issue with freshness or taste. I was told that the entire location has undergone an update including organizing and remodeling so I found no issues there either. I generally found everything I needed and after a couple of trips, I (pretty-much) had the place mapped out in my Virgo mind. Twice we purchased pre-made items from their deli area and found them to be quite fresh n' tasty. One time, we purchased food items for a road trip to Williamsburg and everything was fine after traveling in a cooler. During my 3-week stay in Virginia, I shopped here twice before I even knew what a VIC card was. It's a rewards-type card. Get one - it'll save you (a bit) from the higher-than-usual prices. The prices were slightly more than I usually pay at a Stater Brothers or Ralph's market (back home) so I would equate the prices with a chain like Gelson's (also back home). Generally, I found everything I needed each time I shopped with exclusion of one (not terribly important) item. My suggestion is that if you're on a budget, prefer a one-level store or want a huge selection (versus convenience) shop at a Giant or other large chain-type of grocery. For me, this location was exactly what it needed to be. Within walking distance, convenient and has friendly & helpful staff. Is there still room for improvement? Perhaps, but I think this particular location is far better than some of the reviews from a couple years ago. read more

Boy was I ever excited when this Teeter finally opened up! With options like the the Bradlee Safeway / Giant disaster, this thing couldn't come soon enough. This Teeter doesn't compare with the other Teeters in the area, I'm very sad to report. It's much smaller and consequently has a much smaller selection of items. The produce section is really quite small and because of this, they tend to push higher ticketed certified organic items. Often times I find they are out of the non-organic items and I'm forced to pay tariff on a lemon that was hand picked and gently caressed in a far off land. Their meat and fish selection is pretty small too, but I will say that the items they do carry are quite fresh and delicious. The wine selection is okay, but the prices are not okay. I stopped buying wine here after the first few weeks and stick with the Bradlee Safeway for good deals on decent wines. This may just be me... but I find Teeter in general to be hella-expensive. I think if you put the same bag of groceries from Safeway head to head, you'd find a pretty big difference. I do have to say that the staff here is very friendly. They do whatever it takes to make sure you never have to wait to checkout. This is a nice change from the other stores in the area. The deli employees are ridiculous. When a customer approaches, it is not a proper greeting to say, "You need somethin'?" Also, I wouldn't have to repeat my simple order if the deli clerks would focus on what I am requesting, rather than carrying on their conversation in the middle of an order. But, wait... it gets better... Today was the third time a cashier has attempted to bag my cilantro on the bottom of a bag. That kind of utter ignorance is appalling. Even if the proper handling of fragile produce is part of the Harris Teeter training program, do people really need to be told NOT to place something more delicate than eggs at the bottom of a bag? Also, this is the same store where a cashier crushed my dill plant under other groceries. I guess you can't fix stupid, but you could be a bit more selective in your hiring process. OK, I don't normally write reviews of grocery stores. What's the point? Most stores are the same, with the same items up for sale, the same layout etc. Why am I writing one now? Because this is probably the worst grocery store I have ever been to. My husband and I love Harris Teeter. The one closest to us in Potomac Yard has been closed since May, so we have been alternating between this location and the one in Pentagon Row. Neither has good parking. But the Shirlington one is a mess. The layout doesn't make sense and there is a severe lack of signage. Plus, there is a whole second level where a lot of necessities are located. Is there a sign to tell you that? Not really. It is always crowded and cramped and there are never enough people there to check you out. It also seems like they don't carry as wide of a selection as other grocery stores in the area. And I'm not talking obscure groceries here. I'm talking name brands that Giant, Safeway, Shoppers and other Harris Teeters have. I usually leave with half my list still needing to be filled elsewhere. The one positive here is that the employees are very nice and super helpful. But it isn't enough to make us ever go back. read more

Pros: -Lots of check out lanes that are actaully open during the evening rush makes for a quick check out process -Cashiers are very friendly -Store employees are readily available and happy to check the stock in the back Cons: -Twice over the last month they've been out of a certain fresh herb (once I had to settle for the organic green onions, and once I had to go without basil) -The produce section isn't laid out very well so I find myself wandering around trying to find things -I get that the store is a weird shape and pretty small, but more/better signage about where to find things would be helpful -Hardly any dairy-free options. Earth Balance buttery spread seems pretty standard at most other grocery stores now -My usual shopping trip here is more expensive than at TJs or Giant. I live in the neighborhood and used to shop at this harris teeter daily. Recently I am choosing to go to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's even Giant and Safeway. Here are the reasons why: 1. Organic fruit and veggie options are very limited, spoiled, and expensiveI already pay double for organic produce , but why does the freshness of veggies have to be so poor? - There are no organic cucumbers. - Tomatoes, are not ripe, and have no taste. - Raspberries always have mold in them - Celery has brown spots on it both bagged and unpacked options. 2. Gluten Free Options - there are some which is great. But why no GF bread in the fresh bread section? Why only 1 brand of frozen GF bread? Why no GF bagels , burger buns, etc? 3. Dairy - no Soy yoghurt options at all . - no Organic regular Greek Yoghurt, only fat free. - no organic cream cheese option 4. Almost no non-GMO options. Overall I do not feel that this store caters to healthy life style, which is too bad. I will continue to shop elsewhere. read more

This place is super convenient (the shirlington bus station is a short walk away) and I've always had a good experience with the pharmacy. However, the cheese is $$$$ and the produce can be picked over. It's great for picking up a few things if you are already in shirlington, but I go somewhere else for full grocery shopping. Parking: the first floor has free 1 hour parking for Harris Teeter customers. It can get full at peak times, but you can usually find something. read more

The best thing about this Harris Teeter is the location...it was right around the corner from my old apartment, so it was incredibly convenient. Second best was the customer service. I've seen other reviews criticizing this aspect, but I went here almost daily for a couple years and didn't have that issue (then again, maybe I was there so much my experience was abnormal). Anyway, I just didn't see it. As for everything else...prices were high -- I'm comparing it to the Wegmans I live right next to now -- and the selection was iffy. Produce tended to be pretty bad. I love Harris Teeter, I really do. This one however, is not my favorite. It is smaller than the other two I frequent (Fairfax and RTC in case you were wondering), so there is less selection. All things considered, this is my favorite grocery store: anywhere, anyplace, anytime. Consider: 1. I seldom have to wait to get checked out. Yes, I'm retired and go during the day, however, compare to Giant: any time of day, there's a wait, often, a long one. 2. The checkout clerks have ALWAYS been pleasant, for us, anyhow. Maybe it's our attitude? (Heck, maybe those reviewers who complain about unpleasant staff, should review their OWN attitude?) 3. The two-tier store means, unless you need something (usually, cleaning supplies and similar), you only have half a store to get through. 4. Overall, prices tend to be slightly tilted to the premium side however, wine is frequently 20% off (knock off another 5% on Senior Thursdays, if you're over 60). Actually, except for lemons and limes (10 for a buck at Great Wall, 69 cents each at HT), I never notice much of a price difference. SURELY HT is less than Whole Foods (but then, what isn't)? Hot peppers are $2/lb at HT, DOUBLE or MORE at Giant. No-brand tomato juice, $1.49/can; look all over, you won't do better. Finally (just to hit some examples), a regular special is, 5 12-packs of Coke for the price of two of them (such a deal!) 5. I'm at a loss to explain away complaints here by others re the parking. YOU PARK RIGHT BY THE DOOR (or a few steps away), UNDER COVER, too. Sure, a 5-6 PM their lot will fill up; guess what? DON'T GO AT PEAK TIMES. Feel free to park in the Library slots, I guarantee, you won't get towed. And, of course, you can pick up some DVDs and books there, a two-fer, right? 6. I pay for my own meds. HT Pharmacy has CVS all beat to hell, pricewise, every time I checked (and THIS is after CVS whispers to me "We're giving you our best price!" Yeah, riiiight). read more

A word of warning: you may want to consider my reasons for the 5 star rating. It's walkable, my love for their $3.99 footlongs, 24 hour night owl option and it's walkable - after jumping out of a cab at 3:00 am inebriated for various chicken pieces and candy. Now while overpriced when compared with most over grocery stores, as a VIC card holder, you can actually find better deals. This store is horrendous for a multitude of reasons: 1) the free parking in the garage? The one where the parking spaces say "free for one hour for Harris Teeter customers" - oh yeah. I got a ticket the other day. I was in the store for 20 minutes. Apparently you have to push the button on the meter? Why do I need to feed the meter for free one hour parking??? No one is allowed to park there over an hour anyway. 2) the produce section is consistently disgusting. Flies all over the fruit. I picked up a bag of lemons the other day and thankfully I checked it first, it was completely mush and molded in the middle. All of the vegetables are always soaking wet and at times moldy. If you buy any produce from here it won't last you longer than a day or two because it is already disgusting! 3) THE LAYOUT OF THIS STORE MAKES NO SENSE! Items are not grouped together how they should be. You will spend so much of your life trying to find items because the store is not labeled properly and random items are upstairs that you would never know. Who designed the layout of this store??? This place doesn't seem to have a lot of variety. It's definitely a smaller Harris Teeter: they always seem to be out of whatever I'm looking for. For example, they haven't had Coke Zero in weeks. Sounds trivial, but the spot on the shelf for the Coke Zero cans has been empty forever. Every other Harris Teeter in the area is well stocked, so not sure what's going on here. I treat it almost like a corner store. If I need to run in and grab toothpaste or laundry detergent real quick, it works. But for actual grocery shopping, I'll go to Pentagon City or Ballston. I like Harris Teeter stores in general. They are very clean, well stocked, and the customer service is the best of all the area grocery stores in my opinion, including Whole Foods. Only Trader Joe's can surpass them but they are truly exceptional. The Shirlington Teeter is my favorite. While I don't love the 2 level design, the small footprint is easy to manage. As long as you don't need sundries, wine, cleaning products, pharmacy, or chips (all on the second floor via elevator) then you can zip in for fresh veggies, meat, grocery items, dairy, and beer/beverages and zip out of the store in a flash. The lines are never too bad and they have lots of samples too (always re-stocked promptly!) Skip the Pentagon Teeter and go to Shirlington - library and other amenities are a stone's throw away. You can get your books, go to happy hour at a sidewalk cafe, and still get groceries on the way home - not bad for thr burbs! read more

I give it three stars because it claims to be a grocery store, and low, it meets all the citeria of a grocery store. It is smaller, not a broad selection, but has all the basics and more. For good cheeses and bakery goods, there are also a couple of very nice shops two minutes walk away you can go to on the same trip. My issue I with the service. They only have two ends of the scale. The checkers generally are polite and efficient. The people working the deli and meat/seafood area appear to be there for some form of occupational therapy for antisocial disorders. If the DMV ran that side of a grocery store, Haris Teeter is what you would get. They hate their jobs, the hate the customers, and they hate your insistence on service. You cant miss the message to the customer, "Your request is possibly the worst thing that has happened to me all month." read more

Only giving this store one star because the people that work there are SUPER nice. However, if you want good produce do not go here. You will have to shift through a ton of moldy fruits and vegetables to get to something that is halfway decent and it will still be bruised and look like it was dropped a bunch of times. A store employee even came over to me when I was trying to find strawberries that weren't moldy and he tried to help me find some, we couldn't find ANY. I left without any fruit because blueberries, raspberries, everything had fuzz on it. This is a good "quick" grocery store. Not quick as in you will actually get out of here quickly, but quick as in they don't have everything they have at their other larger locations. I've been here a few times, and normally find a parking spot on the street but if not, there's a huge messy lot in the back. The store layout always confused me because I enter from the street for the most part, and I'm used to walking into the produce/deli section, not the frozen/boxed foods section. It throws me off. The deli is good but didn't have everything the one on King/Jordan had. Also, I was generally confused about what items were upstairs and what items were downstairs. I can't remember if I couldn't find the directory, or if it just wasn't as clear as I wanted. Either way, if you need a few items this is a good store to come to. Have been going to this location for several years. However, have reached the end. Produce never re-stocked, spoiled, or out of date. The sidewalk where shopping carts are kept are full of bird excrement-so are the carts. Thew hand held baskets are never cleaned. Store is not designed well for shopping. Avoid! I try and shop at Harris Teeter as often as possible, but this is a location I avoid. The layout of the store is confusing, and there are always multiple U-Scan registers closed/broken. OK if you need to pick up an item or two, but head to another HT location if you're looking to pick up a week's worth of groceries. read more

Be prepared to bump into people because this place is tiny. I usually just run in there for a few items; Trying to get around with a shopping cart is like playing bumper cars, but no where near as fun. Also, there selections are lacking. There's really no reason to go there unless you live in Shirlington and need a few items. If you're shopping for a family, or doing your weekly shopping, I'd recommend you avoid this place and stick to a regular sized grocery store. read more

Great place to stop in for snacks and drinks before movies at the Shirlington movie theater. Yes, there are shops and stores all around, but sometimes you want something simple or just candy without paying exorbitant theater prices. HT seems to know this and have made some of those ready snacks easily available not far from the check out stations. read more

This grocery store has been my go to since 2 supermarkets in Farlington closed for renovations earlier this year and I'm not really a fan. The reason why is because the store is on the smaller side and the layout is awful. If they even have what I'm looking for I can never find it. I also don't think the prices are the best. read more

I was happy that a grocery store was gonna be close. I visited this teeters a few times after it opened and was annoyed. Annoyed at it's small isles, small selection of products, second floor, ghetto employees, terrible parking and woefully inadequate check out lanes. Could they have shoved anything bigger into a smaller space? It would be better if they had split up the space and put in a 7-11. I have also witnessed the Harris Teeter tractor-trailer delivery truck hit parked cars trying to get into the loading dock. I usually don't review grocery stores, but in my quest to review the places in Shirlington, I have to review this place. Inside is your typical, two-level (complete with elevator) Harris Teeter. Prices are a little higher than Giant and Safeway, but some stuff is comparable if you're a VIC club member. Fresh produce, baked goods, decent customer service (although I did hear one of the Managers yell at a customer once---I was shocked). Now, two stars are given because of that freaking parking garage. I do live in walking distance to this Harris Teeter but sometimes, I have to stop on my way home from work. The parking garage is a nightmare. Only a few slots designated for Harris Teeter, which is open a lot longer than the library, which has reserved slots too. And then the Signature theater and the Hilton Hotel--they have reserved slots. This Harris Teeter gets very busy after work and you could spend 20 minutes driving up and down the damn garage, looking for a parking spot. Whoever made the decision to dedicate so many slots to a library that seems to be closed more often than it's open should be removed from his/her position of decision-making authority. This store is not big, does not have everything you need and is stacked on two floors. However, they are close, offer excellent fresh produce and great fish & meat specials. The guys behind the prepared foods counter need to learn a thing or two about talking about their hookups but overall, very professional staff and well managed.
