Foxhole Pub - Brandy Alexander - basically a delicious, boozy soft-serve second to NONE

A friend had recommended checking out the Foxhole after her last visit here - she said the small…read moretown vibe was great and the old fashioned were great. I've always liked the Sparta side of Fort McCoy better than Tomah, as it just seems more like an individual small town versus a big-box thoroughfare. What a wonderful recommendation, I had a fantastic visit. My co-worker can second the old fashioneds! Staff was super friendly and service was attentive. Clearly there are locals and regulars coming in that know each other by name, but being out-of-towners we were still treated the same and welcomed. We sat at the bar (always my preference), but there is plenty of restaurant seating if you come here with a group or with your family. They have a decent beer selection on tap, and the menu can cover pretty much all appetites. I ordered the veggie burger, which was somewhat generic but nevertheless tasty and I ate the whole thing. Overall, I'd say the food here is good - maybe nothing crazy unique, but good, especially with the somewhat limited options in the area if you want to stay away from chains and fast food. I will absolutely be back for another dinner and continue to try out options on the menu. I'd really love to do the fish fry if I'm ever here on a Friday night. But, who needs dinner when you have dessert?! OMG I'd seen some photos of their desserts online, and even though I'm not usually a dessert person, these photos drove me here that night! Wow. The Brandy Alexander is absolutely incredible. It's large but my co-worker and I each ordered our own (and finished it completely). Anyone can make a Brandy Alexander you sip from a cup... but this was like a soft serve goblet of ice cream with the booze mixed in throughout. The BEST. I will be back here every time I'm in the area just for this (and then good food and beer is always a nice add-on).

Left totally satisfied and was in and out in 30 minutes. We were in a hurry. Brought friends back for dinner. They live in the area but had never been there. The ladies had pulled pork sliders with baked beans. My guy friend had perfectly smoked half rack of ribs along with 1/4 pound brisket with baked beans. I had the whole 1/4 brisket with baked beans and potato salad. Sides were fantastic. And those baked beans, I could eat a pail of them. Highly recommend without any reservations. My number one BBQ place in the Midwest. Can't miss, the food is superb and our waitress, Molly J was outstanding.

We are out-of-towners that found this joint on a maps search. Based on the reviews I read from…read moreothers and the lack of BBQ options in our area, I was very excited to try this place. However, it didn't quite live up to the hype. My husband had the poutine with brisket (pictured), he ate most of it, but when asked for his thoughts on it he said the brisket seemed to have more pieces of fat than actual meat. The cornbread side he ordered was good though, with just the right amount of sweetness. I had a pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and potato salad. The beans had so many good reviews I felt compelled to try them, and they weren't bad just seemed like basic canned beans with some pulled pork thrown in. The pulled pork for the sandwich was fine, but came smothered in what appeared to be paprika, nothing special. Potato salad ingredients were nicely sized, but it was bland. The barbecue sauce might be homemade and you could feel the grittiness of the sugar crystals in it, which was surprising but good, and had a little bit of heat to it. I snuck a bite of my kids' mac and cheese after my two year old took a bite and said, "bleck." The Mac and cheese had the right amount of creaminess and the noodles were cooked to the right amount of tenderness to keep it from tasting like it's been sitting all day, but it seemed very bland and needed salt to be enjoyable. The pickles were very good. It took nearly thirty minutes to receive our food, but our server was very prompt in welcoming us and getting drinks to the table. They were also very friendly when my little one didn't want to stay seated and kept thinking the ATM was her personal computer, the struggle was real after being strapped in a car seat for the last 1.5 hours. There is a popcorn machine that offers free popcorn and a couple different seasoning options to top it with. My kids enjoyed the popcorn while we waited for our food. When I asked my kids what they thought of our new restaurant find, my middle daughter (10) commented on how the bartender was very loud and talked a lot. She could be heard regardless of which end of the restaurant she was on. I noticed the same thing, but thought maybe it was just me. We were fed, but probably won't return. This restaurant is located next to a railroad track in the middle of a very wooded area and the deer were abundant. We had to slow at least four times within 5 miles of the restaurant for deer crossing the road.
