Both of those stores quoted absurdly high prices for a basic black frame. At Stanhope, I was shown several different beautiful options for a much more reasonable price point. Everyone was friendly and respectful during Covid times and ensured that I had all the facts. The turnaround time was also significantly shorter than any other place. Most of the staff are helpful and kind. That's why my visit this weekend (Sunday, 11/2) was such a surprise. An older female-presenting employee with long dark curly hair yelled at me and my young son when we tried to ask where the dry-erase markers were, while she chased after other customers who had already said they didn't need help. I said, "That was odd... but," and tried to ask my question, but she immediately cut me off and began raising her voice defensively. The escalation and her incendiary reaction was shocking in a customer service setting. I had to walk away, and another employee quickly helped us find what we needed. When I went to check out, she ended up on the register. I forfeited my loyalty points and asked my partner to handle the transaction because she'd made me uncomfortable. I told him what had transpired on the way home and he said she was curt and dismissive with him, too. This has always been a reliable neighborhood art store, but that kind of behavior makes it harder to come back. Nobody wants to deal with the loose cannon in the office aisle!

My experience at Harvard Square was 5 star worthy until pickup. I needed an appointment to have my custom framing session which went off without a hitch. I booked online, they let me in when I arrive and had me in and out in less than 30min. After a couple weeks, I got a call letting me know that my item was ready for pickup and to just knock on the door when I got there. They close at 6 so I made an attempt to arrive at 5:45 on a Wednesday for a quick pickup but the lights were already out and no one was around. I get life happens and maybe the associate had to leave early, no harm. I come the next day at 5:15 and I see someone at the desk, I knock at the door and he makes eye contact with me and it looks like he gets on the phone so I assume he's calling someone to let me in. Now, I don't have an appointment because I'm picking up and was told I don't need one. At this point no one has come out and I've been standing outside in the cold for about 5 minutes when I give another wave and he continues to ignore me. Finally, he gets up from the desk walks up to the door and from behind the door, forcefully taps on the paper on the door about needing an appointment for framing services, and with an attitude says "go online", then quickly turns around back to the desk. Now, I was instructed to show up and knock on the door which I did so I said I'm here to pickup. He begrudgingly turned around and asked my name and hands me my print from a crack in the door, in the dark, without showing it to me or giving me a second to look at it. I had a large piece framed at the Porter Square location about 2 months ago and when I arrived they took the 3 minutes to ensure that it was what I'd ordered and to my standard. I couldn't have been more disappointed with how my experience ended here at Harvard Square and now know to steer clear. They may do a great frame but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Had the associate seen me knock and come over to let me know I needed an appointment immediately, I would've been able to let them know I was here for a pickup without issue. Instead, this person made the choice to ignore me instead of taking the 30 seconds to come up and try to help. Really disappointing.

Stanhope Framers has a large selection of frames and employees who are professional, helpful and have beautiful taste and offer guidance and advice if requested. I did an online pick-up order this morning for 3 identical items for Easter, and while I was not…read morethrilled about having to go to Cambridge my usual store (Newton) was sold-out. It was raining, it is the week of Passover and Easter and the parking lot was a mess. I ran in, grabbed my order and thought "what a cute red bag they put it in" and ran out. My mistake was not checking to see what was actually in the bag..... Not the colors I ordered and no, I did not say that substituting the items was OK (because it wouldn't have been). Complete waste of time since I now need to return them and feel like a weirdo returning Easter stuff AFTER the holiday when I have time (and will not be returning to Cambridge). I always use pick-up and have never had a problem, lesson learned! Thanks for wasting my time (and $3.98 gallon gas)!

I sent an email to The Picture Store with images of what had happened and asked for a refund for the one artwork that was done incorrectly. I left a message a week later and now, after almost two weeks, I still have not heard back. Go someplace where the customers are treated respectfully after the work is finished.
