Had a great experience with Stanhope recently! I visited 2 other frame stores in the Cambridge / Somerville area before coming here to see how I could get one my favorite 48 x 36 inch canvas prints framed. Both of those stores quoted absurdly high prices for a basic black frame. At Stanhope, I was shown several different beautiful options for a much more reasonable price point. Everyone was friendly and respectful during Covid times and ensured that I had all the facts. The turnaround time was also significantly shorter than any other place. This is a really lovely frame shop. The folks who work here are true artisans. Whether you walk in knowing what you want or are looking for a little help, the talented members of the Stanhope team will walk you through the many, many options available to you. Most recently, I got a large poster and a cross-stitch framed. The woman I worked with, Jennifer, took plenty of time to explain to me the different kinds of glass, matting, and framework that I could have done. This isn't where you go for a plastic 3X5 frame (that's Target)--the work they do to present your pieces will likely last a lifetime. Wanted to love this place, but unfortunately there were a number of issues with my framing job. I had two original prints framed in float mounts. After picking out the frames, I had arranged to come back in to sign the art work once they were trimmed to the right size, and noticed one piece was attached upside down. It was corrected, but there was a noticeable dimple in the paper after. Once they were framed out, the margin around the pieces were both very uneven, nearly 3/8" different in some areas, which is a lot when the intended margin is supposed to be 1/2". And finally, after both of these issues were corrected, the new float mounting was, well, not really a float mounting? The prints were just attached to the mat board at the top of the artwork, and flow away from there, so there was not a consistent "shadow" around the work, as the top now looks totally attached to the mat board. When I called to ask about this last issue, I unfortunately wasn't accommodated very nicely. Not feeling like arguing, I resigned to "test them out" for a little while and see if the issue doesn't resolve. They have not. I can imagine it's frustrating for them too, but unfortunately, the issues originated with their level of attention to detail and craftsmanship. I just wanted what I paid for, and if the customer service had been nicer, I probably wouldn't be writing this review at all. read more

Stanhope's frames are the best, period. I've been coming here for years and am consistently delighted by the quality of the frames, tasteful design choices, and excellent customer experience. They take the time to help pick out a mat and frame combination that really highlights the artwork, and they treat your pieces with respect even if the value is only sentimental. Yes, they are expensive, but the result is a beautiful museum quality piece you will be proud to display in your home. I will never go back there! I had them frame a vintage poster 37+" X 52"! We picked out a very expensive frame and glass..... I went to pick it up and they had it wrapped already! When I got home - they had cropped the poster, cutting off the top of the head of the main person in the poster. The poster (now ruined) was more expensive, than the frame and not fixable! The place was highly recommended!?? But, I will never go there or recommend the place to anyone - ever! read more

My husband gave me a beautiful, original 1850 map of San Francisco which he purchased from a print shop on Charles Street in Boston. I had had my eye on it for a while and had studied it closely in the store. I took it to Stanhope for framing in an expensive black frame. When I picked it up, I did look at it before leaving the store, but I was focused on the front view. I did not notice until I got it home that one of the frame corners was misaligned/poorly joined. I took it back to Stanhope and asked the salesperson if they would repair/redo the corner - which I thought was a reasonable request, given how much I had paid to have it framed. The salesperson asked the owner; he came out from the workshop in the back of the store and proceeded to argue with me in an agitated way (he must have been having a bad day). He offered to cover the misaligned corner with some black wood filler to hide the poor work. I stood my ground and he finally agreed to fix the frame. When I picked the map up the second time, the salesperson showed me the frame - it looked good and, given what had happened during my last visit, I quickly left the store. I hung the map on the wall at home, and after looking at it for a few days, I noticed there was a small hole in the center of the map - almost 1/8" - that was not there before. To repair the frame corner would have required Stanhope to disassemble the frame and remove the matte board on which the map was mounted. I don't know what happened, but my map was not in the same condition it was when I first brought it to Stanhope. Owner beware. I should have known better than to leave the map a 2nd time with someone who was so rude to me as a customer. I could not bear to deal with them again, so my map hangs on the wall with its hole. Advice: check completed work very carefully when you pick it up, and be ready for blow-back if you have an issue with their work and decide to stand your ground. read more

I am an art teacher. I met a very friendly employee from this company who went out of her way to donate a lot of excellent materials (scrap mat board, foam board, etc) to our art classroom. The kids were super excited to be able to paint on such nice materials instead of the cheap crumby stuff they usually get. So, for their community spirit, I think they deserve 5 stars. read more

I am so pleased with a recent piece that I had done at Stanhope framers. The quality of the finished work is exceptional and the staff are so helpful and accommodating. They even allowed my fiancé to bring my (well behaved) dog into the shop while they waited for me. I work near this shop and went in with a shirt project to get framed. I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when the sales staff was just so obnoxious to me for no reason. I felt talked down to and the looks I got when I asked questions... Like I shouldn't ask questions when I'm spending money. Long story short they presented a price that was certified insulting. Look , I dress nice, I am blonde and I know what the sales staff was thinking. "I'm going to get this lady for all she's got and be snooty while I do it. Wrong, so wrong. I left and framed the project at a place closer to home for less than half the price and no snootiness! read more
