This ministry provides a holistic approach by helping women to get jobs, job training, and education. They also offer bridge housing and a food pantry. It was a pleasure to visit this large and inviting thrift store during a recent visit to Sanford. They had a selection of furniture, household goods, clothes, accessories, jewelry, shoes, small appliances, and children's toys and clothes. There is a boutique section and they also sell discounted items from the Publix bakery. In a backroom they have a treasure trove of items for one dollar. I had so much fun exploring this store and peeking around corners and opening cabinets to discover even more items. Different weekly sales are on the board out front. This is such a wonderful cause to support. If I lived locally this thrift store would be on my weekly rotation.

We toured the facilities, the workshops, we actually sat down for some demos from the visual arts department, and then gathered around a kiln for a raku ceramics demo, which was ideal on a cold winter afternoon (winter in Florida?). Also, we were able to visit the gallery, which was hosting a photograph exhibit on the history of turn of the century Lake Apopka, about 40 miles away due West, and that was very interesting and enlightening. We also printed a poster, among other things. Personally, I think it was fun to talk/meet some of the faculty, not that I am immediately looking for a new teacher, but it is good to pick one who has some similarities, or none at all. Challenge yourself. After this visit, I will consider taking some classes here. Or come to more events. I really like Crealdé.

On September 9th, my family adopted two kittens, Aren and Delle, from this rescue. We were told they had recently recovered from an upper respiratory infection and were now healthy. Unfortunately, less than a month later, our sweet Delle passed away on October 10th from FIP -- a fatal illness that likely developed from an infection that hadn't fully resolved. We followed all the recommended vet care and sought immediate treatment the moment she showed signs of illness, but despite every effort, she declined quickly. It was a deeply traumatic and heartbreaking experience for our family -- and for Aren, her sister, who is now grieving as well. I want to make it clear that I deeply understand and appreciate the mission behind animal rescues and the challenges they face in caring for so many animals in need. My intention in sharing this isn't to criticize, but to hopefully encourage more thorough medical reviews and communication before adoption. Even small improvements in diligence could help prevent another family from being blindsided by such a devastating situation. I emailed the rescue on October 11th, not in anger but simply to inform them of what happened. Unfortunately, I never received a response. Delle was deeply loved and is deeply missed. I truly hope that sharing her story leads to positive changes for future adoptions -- and to more happy, healthy forever homes.

I volunteered for the 'Disney Give a Day, Get a Day' program, and painted a house with Hands On…read moreOrlando. I used to volunteer a lot, then got out of it as I got older, and was happy to have volunteering put in the forefront of the news with Disney. I knew the volume of people signing up for events, and was pleasantly surprised when I painted a house with Hands On Orlando. The day consisted of painting four houses, with 100 volunteer expected. The HOO coordinator was very organized, arrived early and was very friendly. There was a HOO coordinator for each house, and one who monitored the whole project. They were very clear in their directions, and made a very humid day painting a house in not a great neighbor hood a great experience. Being an annual passholder for Disney, I wasn't worried about the processing time for the receipt of the Disney voucher, and yet it was in my email by Tuesday. Its kind of sad, the coordinator said that the month before, for the same event they had only twenty volunteers, and now all their events are full. While we appreciate all the Disney is doing to help communities, I sure wish more people would volunteer without having to be bribed, and I can't wait til we do it again!

I was also a captain for Hands on Nashville Day, where we painted and spruced up a local high school, and even helped out at the animal shelter a few times. When I moved back to O-town I was super excited to find a local Hands On chapter. There is truly something for everyone here. Whether you like to work with your hands and get dirty, or just sit and hang out with some at-risk kids, or play with the puppies and kitties at the local shelter, Hands on Orlando has a huge network of opportunities, linking you with others who share your passions and organizations that run on the support of volunteers. The stores are part of a larger network of Teen Challenge centers that operate in multiple states, providing support to over 1,000 individuals. One hundred percent of donations and purchases stay in the community. Some of the programs supported include boarding schools for struggling teens, inpatient Christian based rehab centers, and out patient counseling programs. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by how large this store is. They had a large selection of clothes, shoes, accessories, furniture, art, home goods, small appliances, and more. If you need to furnish a new apartment or set up a new household I would head here for their large selection and inexpensive prices. I couldn't resist a $2 mug. All of your donations and purchases go to supporting an excellent cause. There is even a Goodwill located next door for even more thrifting fun.

By donating, shopping here customers are supporting locals in need. This store has a lot of clothing and it is color coordinated so the color you are looking for is easy to find. Some of the clothing is like-new, but I have found some that have stains or tears, so be sure to inspect closely. Regardless, we have found some exceptional jackets, tee's, hats while shopping here. For me, the big win here is the furniture. I have seen some high-quality sets of furniture here, and gorgeous dining room sets sold the minute they hit the floor. So, if this is something you are looking for, I recommend stopping in regularly. The last time we came here they had two upright pianos available for sale for very cheap ($130-$160), and electric organ ($150) and a baby grand piano for sale at a very reasonable price (about $500). All the pianos most likely needed work but they would work great for decoration in a brewery, bar, or BBQ joint. On previous visits they have had guitars and a drum set for sale also at a fair price. The store has a huge selection of kitchen appliances, household items, kitchen wares, and electronics for sale. Staff here are super friendly and there are a lot of them. If you need help loading any of your purchases, they are more than happy to help you. They have a convenient drop off location at the main store off of SR-46 and they will also pickup donations from your home if it is a larger item but you must schedule pickup online. Side note: One of our favorite things to do after having dinner at El Sol is grabbing a coffee at the Racetrack then shopping at the Teen Challenge and Goodwill next door. All of these stores are in the same plaza, so it's an easy way to burn off a few calories from dinner and have fun shopping before heading home for the evening.
