I went to a visit a friend today here where I was accosted by a super rude (borderline hostile) front desk worker. Right away, they were annoyed they were working, and treating people with such disrespect, it got me so upset I wrote this review. The front desk rep was a male, wearing a mask and should not be really dealing with the public if they don't have a modicum of respect for people. Forget wanting to help. Astor Tower: The worst experience I've had in PDX. You will hear every move your neighbors make. You will hear them moving, playing music, laughing, and banging about. I've had to report multiple neighbors playing metal so loud I could hear it from the elevator, hallways, and inside my apartment. Each time (must have been a dozen), someone would come up, knock on the door, passively ask to "please turn down the music somewhat" and go about their business with zero repercussions on the resident. Zero consequences only encourages this inconsiderate behavior. After comparing notes with other residents, this seems to be a way of life at Astor Tower. The halls and elevators constantly smell of weed. Disgusting. Leasing is incredibly passive aggressive. Even more than PDX standards. It's clear they're there to cash their checks and give residents lip service instead of resolving conflicts. Rent is OBSCENE for the area. There's nothing there. Businesses left since COVID. People park their low rent cars way too close to luxury ones. Note - they don't care if you're driving a Mercedes. They still park too close. Gross. Random people are always in the lounge, taking over with loud birthday parties and game nights. Go to your own apartments! Or better yet - go out to someone else's house. Don't interfere with those who have to live in close quarters and can HEAR EVERYTHING. Stay away from Astor Tower / Hassolo buildings. Hassalo - if you attempt to pull down my honest review again (I know it was you guys), I will report you. Stop the nonsense. Fix your problems. I've been living here for two years. I know over 8 people who have had their cars broken into (some multiple times). My car was broken into 2 months ago, whereas security refused to check the cameras. Two days ago I was robbed again, this time my car had (2) 21" RIMS AND TIRES REMOVED from my car, in the main parking lot next to the main parking entrance. The security company refused to let the police officer view the video from the cameras, telling him instead they would "let him know if they found something." They found nothing of course. When I asked for the name of the security company, they refused to give it to me. To take the massive rims out someone would have had to go in and out through the gate on the video cameras, and use a pass or credit card to exit. Months ago when I reported my first break-in I was told "yeah it's been happening a lot", yet I never see any security down there. I only see them on the corner smoking cigarettes. I'm giving Hassalo a 1-star review because they refuse to take action and/or replace the security company who is letting everyone's car get broken into. I believe the security company or employees are in on the thefts due to their reluctance to help or be named. read more

I've reached the year mark in calling Aster Tower my home and could not be happier with the decision. Waking up to these incredible views while having easy access to all of Portland via highway 84 or the Max stop at our doorstep gives you a sense that you're at the center of it all. The location is the perfect mix of urban living while benefiting from the less chaotic pace of a suburban neighborhood. Among my favorite characteristics is the diversity of the neighbors which have all been incredibly warm. This may be that a large percentage of them are dog owners and are naturally outgoing and conscientious. It makes for a great vibe while out on the terrace or spending time in the spa. The staff at Aster tower deserve a resounding accolade. I've experienced nothing short of professionalism from all of them, and they are a welcome sight at the front desk. I've been a huge fan of my apartment layout and the smart design that dots the space. With the recent heat wave Portland was experiencing temperatures of up to 116 degrees. My saving grace is that all our units have air conditioning. This is a rarity in Portland even in new developments. It will certainly come to be an important feature in the coming years. As I post this review I'm rather amiss about Megan's review below. Perhaps this is their first foray into adulthood and they have never come across a lease agreement before but Hassalo is very upfront about the $165 a month parking space. A charge that is comparable to the vast majority of buildings I came across in my search -- if not cheaper. Did they not tour the handicap accessible apartment before signing? Rather bizarre that you accepted a living space only to complain about it in a public forum as if it was forced upon you. Aster Tower is definitely worth your consideration and if you're on the fence I would recommend you take the plunge. read more

I had lived here since 2017. I stayed because it was close to work and I had a nice view (which not every side has) I would NEVER recommend anyone move in in 2023. I was BIT BY A DOG AND MANAGEMENT NEVER FOLLOWED UP WITH ME. TONYA the property manager lies. I went to confront her about not responding to me and she said she did. When I asked her to pull up the emails she said she couldn't find them (I have video proof of this interaction and every email) I asked to speak with her manager, and she gave me someone else's number. They usually didn't pickup. The one time they did 'Amy' said they received my voicemail. I asked why no one responded and she said it wasn't her issue so whoever it was should've reached out. She asked what the situation was, and while I explained she cut me off and said she just needed my name and number to pass along. It took them ONE MONTH to get back to me from the initial contact. I received my move out bill for almost $6000. The floors are cheap vinyl and they want almost $2000 for what is 8 or 9 year old floors. I only lived in a 1 bedroom. Some of the workers mentioned that the management is spiteful and will only implement the rules to some residents. The bill seems to reflect that sentiment. On my move out they made it an absolute nightmare for me. You have to 'reserve' the elevator and loading dock for specific times. Over a week in advance I reserve my dates, have the confirmations and everything. The day of, concierge calls me and says I can't have back to back reservations. The previous concierge booked it with no issues. They ended up CANCELLING my reservations and only leaving me with 1/day. Meanwhile, it wasn't even being used during the cancelled timeframe. Going back to my dog bite. They aren't strict on ensuring people are following the rules. This resulted in me getting bit on the back of the leg by an unleashed dog on my floor. The resident didn't stay after it happened, so when I tried to reach out to management they first said they couldn't give me any info. I asked if they could give it to animal control. Then they gave me the residents first name. So I am unsure how well they respect our privacy. (I was ok with not getting his name, as long as animal control was able to follow up) TONYA and SHANNON never continued to follow up. They said there wasn't much they could do to find people but to message concierge as soon as there was an incident. I would send it, and they would say they couldn't find that person and to take pics. I started doing that, but it didn't seem like any positive changes occurred. There is a camera in the dog relief area, so as a resident you would think that is some sort of security. WRONG! TONYA mentioned she doesn't know if it even works. I brought that up to her manager EMILY and she said it should but doesn't save for long. I brought up the fact that I immediately message them so they should be able to get on it right then. They just go back to they can't take care of everything. This complex is falling apart. The water is constantly being shut off. After about 4 years, the hot water would regularly run out. They have their own water system that runs through the parking garage, and when they clean it it SMELLS RANCID. It looks as though it leaks onto the walls and possibly cars. The water would sometimes be brown in my apt. Some other things to note: -Parking garage regularly has break ins. -24/7 concierge does not happen like they advertise (constant new hires make it not run smooth) -Trash chute was inoperable MANY times. You would have to leave trash in your apt for 3-4 days -Amenities are poorly managed -A/C unit never worked. They would 'fix it' but never replaced the unit. It would get 95 degrees and their solution was moving me and my pets to a vacant unit as a cooling shelter. -80% of surrounding business closed, so it's not a convenient location for food or fun. (Lloyd center only has a couple stores left) I do want to shout out the best part of this place and that was the cleaning crew. They were always so kind read more

Tried to tour this place. Waited an hour, no one available, waited another hour, was told everyone was on lunch. Lunch break is 2 hours and EVERYONE in the office goes at the same time? So, okay, whatever. Check Yelp reviews. Whoa, lots of hate for this place. Seems once the tenant signs the lease, the front office starts ghosting you. Well, hey, I got an update, they ghost you still, but now you don't have to sign the lease anymore, the front office has graduated! You can now be ignored 100% of the time, before or after signing the lease, they don't discriminate anymore! Alright, look, in all seriousness, this level of effort to even tour the place is unparalleled. And it seems to align with the degrading reviews for this place over time. Go on the Yelp website from a computer, and instead of sorting reviews with "Yelp Sort" (the default method), try clicking that drop-down, and click "Newest First". Be prepared for an onslaught of 1, 2, 3 star reviews. It's just bad. read more

I've lived in the Elwood Bldg for 6 months now and I cannot say enough good things about this place! 1. The layout of the apartments are really unique and I have received many compliments from friends about how much they like it. 2. For the most part, it's quiet. Apartment living will always be noisier than single family homes, but the noise is pretty minimal considering. 3. The staff are extremely attentive and helpful from the concierge to the repairmen. They remember my name and my dogs name. 4. The proximity to public transit can't be beat! 5. My 677 sq. ft apt has FOUR huge closets!!! I searched all over Portland for an apt with good storage and this was the best by far! 6. I love that there's a private pet relief area not accessible to the general public. And 9 times out of 10, my dog is the only one in there using it. 7. Kitchen cupboards galore! Ceiling to floor - I use some for storage. 8. It's modern and newly constructed. I moved and downsized from the Pearl, and I can honestly say, I prefer this apartment to my last. It's been a great decision thus far. Overall, I have really enjoyed living here. The reviews for Hassalo on Eighth are clearly mixed, but thought it'd be worth at least throwing it out there that the Elwood Bldg is one worth considering. read more

Yep, I'm into it! I've lived here for a while, and I'm happy as can be. Perfect little place to hang my hat and conveniently explore Portland. After a couple LONG years of living in houses in various states of disrepair in undesirable neighborhoods, I decided that it was high time for me to move into a new construction apartment, preferably one that was centrally located. I more than scored with Aster Tower, one part of the Hassolo on Eighth complex. The apartment itself is pretty great, though there's definitely a wide range of floor plans. I have a ton of windows and natural light, which is vital to surviving in Portland. The bedroom is a good size, easily fitting a queen sized bed and a dresser. The closet is kinda small, but for one person it's just fine. For a while I lived with somebody and we still made it work no problem. The bathroom is great, with a ton of cabinet space and a large shower/tub combo. The kitchen... well the kitchen is super small. Again there's a ton of cabinet space, but not much in terms of countertop. But it's not like I cook anyway! All in all, I am completely completely happy with this unit. However where the building truly shines is the amenities. The 21st floor has a HUGE community room with shuffleboard and three TV areas. Great patio space with outdoor fireplace and BBQ grills. The views are glorious! The gym is great for an apartment, with enough equipment for somebody who is serious about working out to skip a trip to their gym for the day. And the spa.... OMG the spa. Hot tub, sauna, steam room, cold dip. All with a view of Mt Hood. Love it! The building is crazy dog friendly, which is great because most everybody has a dog. The 2nd floor dog relief area is kinda gross, but it IS where a whole pack of dogs pees, so what do you expect? The three dog-wash stations have saved me countless messes. The staff is rad. We have a 24/7 concierge and they're so friendly and helpful. On site maintenance is always keeping the building in tip-top shape and are quick for repairs. My microwave died and I had a new one in less than a day! The neighborhood has it's ups and downs. While it's not immediately close to anything super cool or trendy, it's great for just living life. Green Zebra is in the complex, as are a few restaurants (Garden Bar, Heart Pizza, Little Big Burger, Cafe Yumm). I can walk to a number of other restaurants and bars, and my gym and office are both only 10 minutes away. Beyond that, it's RIGHT off a MAX and streetcar line, which makes going carless so much easier. I love my apartment. I hope to be here a good long while. read more

Words cannot even begin to describe my love for Hassalo on Eighth. I've lived in Aster Tower for about 4 months now and couldn't be happier. This building really has everything you could ask for: AC, fast maintenance repairs, in unit-laundry, 24/hour concierge service and secure access. The buildings are very new and modern; we never hear our neighbors which is a huge plus. The rooftop lounge at Aster is a beautiful way to get sweeping views across the city. As far as location, you are extremely close to downtown, multiple grocery stores, the Moda Center and both I84 and I5. Having Little Big Burger, Garden Bar and Sweetheart Pizza on the block is convenient and they're all great food options. There is a secure parking garage for those with cars, bike storage and MAX line for easy transit. I love living here! read more

So I just moved into Aster Tower about two weeks ago and have had time to settle in and get some stuff unpacked. So far I am loving this place. I upgraded from another place in the neighborhood and for a little bit more (really not much more) I went from meh to wow. I think a list of the things I like would be a good way to explain: - On the MAX line. Not close to the MAX line. Three of the trains drop off directly at the building. I take advantage of this daily. -Quality of the building. This place is top notch. I look around my apartment and I love everything about it. No cheap linoleum here. -The rooftop is spectacular. I sat up there the other day and looked out over the city next to the fire pit and thought what an amenity to have at my home. -Concierge staff is there 24/7 and they are friendly and helpful. -The Hassalo complex has several restaurants and a Green Zebra adjacent and I find it super convenient. -The leasing staff was great as we went through the application/lease process. -When you get a package they put it in a bigger mailbox and put the key to that mailbox in your mailbox. Super secure. Also, your unit number then goes on a LED screen so you know you have pickup. -When you move things in there is a loading dock that you can pull into that has various dollies and rollers. Overall this is just a great place to live. It seems to me that people in the building in general are happy and I think it really has to do with living in such a nice space. read more

First year was great....and thennnnn...the nightmare neighbors moved in and are LOUD AF!!! BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG all day and all night...amazing! WIth concrete floors I still hear he incestant banging of my rude neighbors upstairs, I just sit and wonder what anyone can be doing to make so much F'ing noise! This building has gone down hill and I am very happy that I left. Very poorly constructed building, YOU WILL hear everything from train noise to loud neighbors to slamming doors. I've been living in the Velomor for the past 16 months since moving to Portland. Firstly, the leasing team was incredibly accommodating and quick with communications as I was someone moving from outside the US. When I made initial contact with the leasing office, I received the quickest responses out of all the various apartments I had reached out to. The development had only JUST opened for move ins a few days earlier to contacting them so there wasn't much to show for pictures quite yet but Bailey was great at providing a number of photos of the apartments that fit within my budget. The entire process was quick and smooth and I moved in 2 months later. As with just about everything in the world, there are pros and cons but, for me, the pros far outweigh the cons of living here. PROs: - concierge services - great, friendly people who really get to know the residents and their pets! - maintenance team - always on point! Service requests are responded to within an hour, if even that long. Quick and reliable! - management team - i've had little need to get into contact with management directly but when I do, I've never had any issues. Always friendly and helpful. - community events organized by the management team. So great! - free coffee in the community lounge! I'm not a big coffee drinker, but as a student when I have the need, I can make the quickest coffee stop on my way through the door. - location - with the MAX light rail, a number of bus lines and the street car on each side of the block making it ridiculously convenient to get EVERYWHERE with just about any option you desire. - well-sized comfortable unit layouts - washer\Dryer in unit - along with all modern, energy-saving stainless steel appliances. - I love how friendly all the various staff are in the building. The concierge, maintenance, security and cleaning staff all try to get to know the residents personally. Makes me feel welcomed and safe in a place to call home. CONs: - Relatively thin walls - not so much that you can't ignore it but the walls are much thinner than I would've expected. Use of a loud TV, music or even the sink waste disposal can be easily heard. I often hear the scurrying of paws and occasionally heavy footsteps from my neighbor above. - I wish I had more kitchen counter space. - People have often complained about the hot water being an issue in the building. It was an issue encountered for a couple of months about 4 months into living here and, while it was inconvenient at the time, it's been fixed and the hot water has been as good as it gets since then. Not to mention, the management allowed us to use the showers in the spa area of the Aster Tower when we went (only once) overnight without hot water during the winter. I was happy that they even gave us that option! - All that to say, this isn't even an issue anymore anyway. Now, I'll be moving to an apartment in the Aster Tower and I'm happy to continue to call Hassalo on Eighth my home. Aster Tower UPDATE: - I can't hear my neighbors - the walls and floors are definitely constructed better so that I can't hear my neighbors like I did at Velomor. I love it. - Quieter AC/heating unit - compared to the one I had at my Velomor apt. I easily forget that it's on. It could probably be even quieter compared to other units but compared to Velomor, I'm happy enough. - kitchen is the exact same, which is nice but means it carries the same amount of counter space. Haha. - 21st floor amenities are the bomb. Always an amazing view in the lounge, gym and spa. - Love living here. read more

I can't recommend this place. I am paying for services that we aren't receiving anymore (concierge). I have been an excellent tenant for years and need to go to a month to month - temporarily. I would be happy to pay the same rent when I was under contract, however, they are taking advantage of my situation, being greedy and are inflating my rent, which causes hardship. I look forward to moving out and someone else taking my apartment overlooking the max line. They'll get to listen to the announcements/bells of which train has arrived and where they are going next - all day and night. oh...and the loud, stomping jerks on the 6th floor.... read more

The building overall is great and very clean thanks to the amazing cleaning crew. They're all very nice and do a great job. But there is many many problems here. They closed the roof for all major holidays and treat us like children because a group of us that live here, stayed up watching fireworks till 10:10 when the roof closes at 10pm. Which in my opinion is extremely early to close when we pay a lot of money for the availability of the rooftop and amenities. It seems that the people who pay more run this place and talked to the managers expressing that they want the roof to close early because they are the only ones who want to benefit from the "view" when we all pretty much have the same view lol. Many of my friends that live here are moving out due to cars being broken into time after time, management and parking does absolutely nothing. There has been talk of someone being robbed at gun point in the lobby, which again there has been no email or reassurance of our safety. Many strange people follow others into the building late at night harassing those that live here. I'm not sure what's going on but there is definitely cause for concern. They also don't seem to take these reviews into account because a lot of the reviews like mine have an automated response of "thanks for your 5 star review..." when it was a 1 star. read more

Horrible, I mean horrible to get my security deposit back. This was just one of the issues I faced living in this complex. My deposit was held for whatever reason? Then management sent me the below email message; which basically blamed me for me not getting the deposit back? I provided my forwarding address, called 10 times, and sent countless emails to fight to get my security deposit back. Nothing was timely and it took almost to Jan 2020 from Nov 2019 to get my security back. The issue was management failed to mail the check. Shannon's reply: "Per Oregon law and your signed lease agreement, we are required to send you your statement 31 days from your notice to vacate date of 11/9/2019. As far as your check, we made numerous attempts to get it to you in a timely manner, however it is the responsibly of former residents to collect the check once mailed from our corporate office." Once you move in, the leasing office ppl's attitude towards you change, it is very noticeable; fake smiles go away & true colors come out. All hot and happy to take your money, have you sign a lease, but after that well, good luck... What I liked about the building, several of the concierge employees were great, nice, and super helpful. They get 5 STARS! They went out of their way to make it feel like home. The building cleaning staff was amazing and did a great job to keep everything tidy. A lot of residents were nice too. The rooftop facilities is really wonderful, Aster Tower. One main issue, the A/C heating unit sounded like a giant booming noise when it turned on. I had to fight to get it fixed & tell them I was moving out. Prior, management tried to tell me "oh, this is normal, and you're just not used to this type of unit..." Yea, right... So, after the booming noise was gone it still sounded like a diesel truck was constantly idling & parked inside the apartment. Yes, it's loud, all day and night. Management then turned from "oh normal noise" too oh, "it is the design of the apartment." Admittedly, they leased me an apartment that had known noise issues. Prior to renting, I stated I needed a quiet apartment and prior to renting I was told it was a quiet apartment. In my apartment, the unit was high up the wall almost touching the ceiling; not on floor level. The A/C and heat would blow out & hit the ceiling and filter into the hallway. The bedroom "area" did not have a unit, so it was either hot or cold in there. The building gave me a portable heater to use. Great, I was happy until I saw my electricity bill, although forwarned by the maintenance man. Other residents told me they have the same issue with the noise, hot, cold, & high bills. The train. Convenient or a noise nuisance? Depending on the floor & what side you live on you can hear the train noise inside your apartment. The stop is right in front of the building & several stops to center city. Some residents hated the train noise. Well... in some apartments it is loud & you can hear the train announcements coming from the train all day. Another issue is the soundproofing or lack of depending on the apartment you live in. From the next-door apartment I had loud TV noise all day and night. Heard it soon as I walked down the hall and in my apartment. No, I never complained. There was also a constant stream of people coming & going from that apartment. A resident from the next building in the complex told me, she complained about an upstairs neighbor. After she complained; the noise suddenly increased to the noise of someone rollerblading through-out the day. The underground garage is $160 a month. Management sends out emails to keep an eye out for ppl who don't belong in the garage. Street parking is very limited. There is a natural grocery store in the complex, a bit high in price, but convenient. Lloyd District is a commercial district with lots of fast & quick food restaurants also small chain stores. Other types of small businesses, restaurants, & shopping are within walking distance of the complex. Lloyd Center mall is 2 blocks; opinions on the mall vary. The area of Irvington is about a 20 min walk away; there is a large park w/an off-leash open area dog space. It's listed as a "24-acre urban park" on the parks department website. The small park, Holladay Park, is 2 blocks away. Search "High volume of 911 calls to NE Portland's Holladay Park will draw greater police, community response over summer." The park also holds scheduled events. The Convention Center, Moda Center, is close by. The hotel across the street from the complex holds events. read more

Awesome management. Everyone we encountered was super responsive and very kind. There's a 24-hour concierge which came in handy on multiple occasions. It also makes the building much safer than other places I've lived. We had no issues with stolen property or packages, which I've experienced at other apartment complexes that are in much more expensive neighborhoods. The appliances all worked super well and anytime we had an issue, it was addressed same-day. The amenities alone in the tower are worth living here. Also, the building is completely soundproof from neighbors. I highly recommend living here. It's my favorite place I've lived in Portland, and I've lived in over 5 complexes. read more

I visited here to see an apartment in Astor Tower about 8 months ago with Matthew. I was so impressed by the rooftop lounge - and all looked clean and new. I was excited because it is located also in my favorite part of the Lloyd district. I already paid my application fee to move in which had the unit price and my move in day. However when I went to sign the lease after the tour the price increased substantially! I was confused why and Matthew stated simply, sorry prices change even within the hour - you just never know! That is bad business practice. I felt like it was because I mentioned my daughter would live with me (age 4) and they wanted to keep it more of a dorm/college age vibe. Just be careful with reserving online here and I hope more come forward to share that quotes should be honored. One previous reviewer mentioned it and it unfortunately is true: bait and change. I'm so disappointed I still want to move in this place but I don't trust the business practices. read more

The unit above me drops things on the floor constantly. Random knocking, tapping and clicking. They refuse to say anything about it or put down rugs. Apparently management has "reached out to them" with no improvements. The smallest impact onto the hard wood floors from above is intensified in the unit below. Impossible to sleep at night. Highly distracting when trying to work from home. No one has reached out to me in an effort to find a solution. I feel like as long as I pay my rent on time each month, and I do, there's no reason anyone should hear my concerns. read more

The building entrance is not accommodating for persons with disabilities. It is not possible for a person in a wheelchair to get into the building unless you get the desk person to open the door or you can struggle opening the doors as there are two double doors to go through. As I wheeled myself back to open the second set of doors the person at the desk looked at me and then looked away. I don't Yelp but after my experience here I can't help but to inform people of the unethical rent increase I acquired after one year. I moved in January 15 2016 agreeing to 1,960 a month in Astor Tower. At that time, the water and trash bill was around 4 to 6 dollars a month and parking was 150. I wasn't thrilled with the price and I found it rather high for the quality. Flooring is cheap and scratches easily, the silly wire closet shelves, the cabinets are cheap plastic that peel off around the edges. Anyway, that was on the high side of my budget but was manageable and I needed a quick place to relocate. One year later I was paying 2,548! First, I was given the option of resigning my lease at 6 months to a year for the price of (I believe if my memory serves me right) 2350. It was at least a 200 to 300 dollar a year increase. This is ridiculous and unethical, just because you can doesn't mean you should! The water and trash bill jumped from 4 to 6 dollars a month to a straight 50 dollars (I don't understand the rationale) and the parking increased by 5 dollars ( not huge but still overpriced for non-assigned parking spot). Second, I refused to sign this lease out of principal. I ended up doing a month to month with hopes of getting out asap. Unfortunately, the extremely ridiculous amount of rent I was paying made this hard. Who can afford another down payment and first months rent when your paying this? I would like to say, I make a good living and I should be able to live, pay my bills, and set something aside each month. Thanks to this money pit I was barely paying my bills and I really didn't care for this kind of sterile, cookie cutter environment. I never lived in a large apartment complex like this before and it wasn't my thing. I do believe these kinds of places are responsible for the huge problems we face in our housing crisis and contribute to an inflated housing/rent market. I find it hard to support and ultimately it lead to my exit from Portland altogether. With all of this, I will say the staff was extremely accommodating and helpful and I enjoyed their professionalism. The units are quiet in Astor Tower compared to the other two buildings and the view was great. I wish I could say my short lived time in Portland was great but I'm afraid this whole experience turned me off to the whole city. read more

I have become Portland's part-time liver and I honestly love this area and my place here. They have a 24 hour concierge, they are brand new but they repaint and maintain like a bonsai gardener and it's super modern and quiet. I don't think I have once heard a neighbor. It's also right in front of a max stop so I go to straight to the airport almost every week for next to nothing. Their maintenance staff is so fast that I actually wait to put in any request until right before I leave because I know that it will be done when I return. I love the dog wash area and the dog friendliness and I'm amazed at how I've never seen dog poo left behind. They go through this place like it's a five star hotel. Finally, the views!! Such amazing views of Portland and while some people question anyone who doesn't live in the Pearl District, well-it's quiet here! The pearl is noisy at all hours. Also, I'm in front of a Max stop! I can go into literally any district in a matter of minutes without having to deal with noise. In case you're wondering...we can't hear the Max in Aster. Also, their photos aren't photoshopped (I thought they were because they're so colorful), it actually does look like the pics. Clearly, I recommend Aster Tower to anyone who asks. read more

First off, let me say, this is my first yelp review. I felt it was necessary to shed light on elements of living here that will help paint a more complete picture of the Hassalo on Eighth experience, because I know I was not alone in my frustrations with our building (Velomor). -As previously mentioned, the hot water was extremely inconsistent. We went weeks with lukewarm water. -Heating unit + bathroom fan in apartments are extremely loud (humming, knocking etc.) -Management was rarely apologetic, understanding, or constructive about small issues affecting overall quality of life of the residents (such as loading dock being broken the day we were supposed to move out, having complaints about construction noise dismissed, or receiving our final accounting over a week late) -If you have a north-facing apartment, your view will be comprised of other apts. and the pet relief area. Also, this side of the building has a tendency to echo the courtyard sound loudly. -Concierges who will remember you and your dogs name immediately! -One of the best farmers markets right across the street every Tuesday! We are terminating our lease early. As a disclaimer, I will say that the leasing, management, and support staff are exemplary in their attentiveness and service. This is not the reason we have chosen to terminate our lease early. To summarize, there are several negative elements of living at Aster Tower that we have experienced on a daily basis. -Thin walls. This city has tons of new development rental buildings built with a noise-free cement foundation. Aster Tower skimped heavily and omitted the cement. The effect- we can hear our noisy neighbors daily, from the loud voices in the hallway, the stereo on full blast 23 hours per day, and the loud dorm room parties next door every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. -Noisy neighbors with no management intervention. We have complained to management several times regarding the excessive noise that leaks into the hallway and into our apartment. There is no logical reason why a tenant feels that a stereo heard from every corner of the floor is acceptable. The effect- it's rude, plain and simple. -Each apartment's front door. This is another substantial complaint that severely affected our experience living at Aster. They are not soft close doors; they are slam doors. For months, we had imagined that the loud banging heard from our upstairs neighbor at 11pm, 12am, 3am, etc., was his annoying habit of furniture arranging at odd hours, and without fail. But no- it's actually the doors slamming on the floors above and around us. The effect- what sounds like elephants arranging furniture is actually a severe defect in the building's design plans. And there is plenty of space between floor and door that lets in any and all noise outside. You can't even have private time. It's that exposed when you get inside your apartment and don't have music/TV on. -Excessive parties on the tenant lounge floor. Two tenant lounges comprise the floor- one work/study room and another general purpose. There must be a party up there every single weekend, multiple times per day. If a tenant rents out one room, they always manage to gather into the non-rented area, and take over the entire floor. The effect- those trying to work/study in peace are annoyed at the noise and comings and goings from those who DON'T PAY RENT. Moreover, the tenant hosting the party can clearly see that his party is interfering with the other tenants' working, studying, quiet time, etc., and does absolutely nothing about it. This is a frequent experience to those who use the lounge, and pay for it in their rent every single day. Our recommendation to management, particularly regarding the third element, which they have control over, is to make it painstakingly clear to tenants renting out one lounge area and not the other to BE RESPECTFUL of those paying tenants who are using the lounge appropriately. We respect the tenant paying for one room by not barging in and working/studying in the middle of the event; the tenant host should respect those studying by keeping his guests out of the non-reserved room. If you're a serious professional or student, this place is way too lax and you will not get peace and quiet, whether in your apartment with noisy neighbors blasting their music or in the work/study lounges. The below average rent will not keep you here for long. You will be interrupted. A quick search will land you at upper echelon buildings that cater to professionals/serious students across the bridge. read more

Aster Tower Review Pros: -Great location adjacent to MAX line and Streetcar stop - sort of in the center of everything -Great parking garage under the complex -Great amenities in the Aster Tower (sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold tub, locker rooms, 21st floor common areas with views) -Staff is great from concierge to management - everyone has been pretty helpful -Units are decently sized and of decent quality Cons: -Air conditioner in unit is so loud that you have to turn it off if you want to hear what you are watching on TV -With only 3 elevators, you will wait a lot. Should have been at least 4 elevators in this building -There are frequent situations on the block that include a lot of yelling, violence, etc. Security is on premise, but can't deter everything. read more

I've lived in the Elwood Building @ Hassalo on Eighth for about a month. Coming from a dream house, the transition was hard yet the team, amenities, and quality build of the space has made for a very positive experience. The space is quiet, pristine, and the front desk crew is incredibly helpful and friendly. The lease and finance team-Baily, Lauren, Jessica, and Angela- are super at what they do and worked hard to meet my timeline and physical site requirements (bathroom bars). Brett, the lead maintenance person, is the best! I'd recommend this place without hesitation and love the central location; it sits right at the sweet spot for access to central city and neighborhood hubs. read more

I have never done a yelp review, but Hassalo on Eighth has earned it (in a bad way). I had high hopes for when I moved into the Velomor, but that is all they turned out to be...hopes. The concierge in the Velomor is absolutely amazing. The construction of the building...not so much. -I can hear every step my upstairs neighbor makes whether or not they are wearing shoes. - When I had a neighbor in the unit next to mine, I could hear everything from there as well. -Security around the area is a joke. My car along with others have had windows smashed and bike theft as well -There is relentless and insanely loud construction noise from the storefronts down below... -If your apartment faces North, you have a lovely view of your neighbors and the sound from the courtyard resonates into your apartment -The building and units are advertised as energy efficient...not even close. I have left my heat and air conditioning off in order to try and lower my energy bill -Water has to be consistently shut off and hot water is hit or miss -The walls are insanely soft. There seems to be monthly maintenance on the AC unit that I can't afford to run, and each time they perform the maintenance there seems to be new scratches and scuff marks on my walls -I have gone out of town and come home to find out maintenance performed work in my apartment...and left all the lights on -THE ONLY saving grace of this place in the concierge. They are absolutely amazing and life savers. Overall, a very disappointing experience and I cannot wait to move. So much so that I often find myself looking at other apartments online. read more

Living here was ok. Poor construction and clunky design features were a common theme. Also, having to deal with 7 months of a smoke detector that was so sensitive that anything more than boiling water set it off was a special kind of awful. Maintenance was called no less than four times for that issue alone, and was never fixed. Near weekly water shut offs and building wide fire alarm tests were also a pretty big quality of life disruptor. The leasing office; charming and friendly while showing you apartments yet standoffish and snarky when you are a tenant. Lloyd District is pretty boring, but after nearly a year one or two retail spaces on the ground floor are opening soon. 2 stars, if you can get a deal on rent you should consider it, but I'd keep looking even if you need to look a little further east. read more

I have lived at Hassalo on Eighth (Velomor) for about a month. I don't often give reviews, but this place is really deserving. First off their property management team is top notch. They really care about you and making your experience here great. From the time we viewed units to our move in - everything was easy and made us feel at home. The unit we live in is lovely: Very quiet; top notch appliances, beautiful finishes and very homey feel. The common areas are kept very clean and fresh and the concierges are not only very helpful, but friendly and personable. We lived in the Pearl before and we it felt very cold. Our little dog loves it too. The location is great - right on the Max and PDX Streetcar lines. I also like that they have NORM which is a state of the art wastewater recycling system and are LEED platinum certified - Cool. Bike parking galore, awesome workout room onsite, doggy parlor and pet relief area with a beautiful courtyard and rooftop gathering area. The Lloyd District is being transformed: I have worked in this area for over a decade and what is going on with the residential development, retail additions and well as the renovation to the Lloyd Center Mall are changing the face of the Lloyd District. So looking forward to the Green Zebra opening up just steps away as well as Cafe Yumm, Garden Bar and many more! I would highly recommend this place (and I'm not very easy to please)! read more

All I can say is that the team that has helped me choose an apartment and negotiate the incredibly hard move from the Big Island of Hawaii to Portland has been wonderful. I have yet to arrive, but have the lease signed and Amy, Jessica, Angela, all of them have worked graciously to help me, from sending me videos to letting my two friends preview my apartment.
